PILKENTON

MILLERS CREEK - Mr. McConley Pilkenton, 83, of McNeil Road, Millers Creek died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 2 p.m. at White Oak Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard Reavis, the Rev. Clyde Smith, and the Rev. Ronnie Gregory officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. The burial with military Rites by Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Pilkenton was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Wilkes County to Ira and Myrtle Griffin Pilkenton. He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church. Mr. Pilkenton retired from American Drew Furniture Co. He is survived by his wife, Stella Mae Wyatt Pilkenton of the home; four daughters, Melba Church, Marcella Vannoy, Lola Mathis and Shelby Lunsford, all of Millers Creek; three sons, Roger Pilkenton of Wilkesboro, Kenneth Pilkenton and Bill Pilkenton, both of Millers Creek; four sisters, Odessa Bumgarner, Christine Wyatt, both of Millers Creek, Rosella Miller of Deep Gap and Pearl Cunningham of Parsonsburg, Md.; three brothers, Howard Pilkenton, Ralph Pilkenton, both of Millers Creek and Richard Pilkenton of Thomasville; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. STEWART

NEWTON - Alvin Eugene Stewart, 88, of 2669 Balls Creek Road, Newton, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home. Born July 26, 1913, in Iredell County, he was the oldest son of Ernest Lee and Minnie Pierce Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a farmer and was a bulldozer operator with the Catawba County Mutual Soil Conservation Association for 43 years. He was an active member of Mount Ruhama Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir until his health declined. He loved to watch things grow and was known for his generous spirit. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Caldwell Stewart, a grandson, Steven Nicholas Sechrist, brothers, George and Jack Stewart and a sister, Perdel. Survivors include two sons, David Stewart and wife, Sybil, of Lake Norman and Ernest Stewart and wife, Mary, of Terrell; a daughter, Mabel Stewart Sechrist and husband, Steve, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Stanly Stewart and wife, Cynthia, of Catawba, Felicia Hoyle and husband, Bill, of Clemmons, Darrell Stewart of Terrell, Emily Stewart of Kannapolis, Shannon Hall and husband, David, of Hendersonville and Jennifer Raub and husband, Micah, of Mooresboro; six great-grandchildren, Adam and Whitney Stewart, Jacob and Sarah Hoyle and Jonathan and Chloe Hall. In addition, Mr. Stewart is survived by a sister, Edith Heath, of Statesville. The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Burns, the Rev. Donald Ferrell and the Rev. E.B. Elmore at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Ruhama Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. WOOTEN

YADKINVILLE - Mr. John "Douglas" Wooten, 65, of Yadkinville died Saturday at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wooten was born March 14, 1936, in Yadkin County to Buford H. and Rossie Speaks Wooten. He was a loving husband, father, brother and a loyal son. Mr. Wooten was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from RJR Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Roger L. Wooten. Surviving are his wife, Glendalyn Lorane Shore Wooten, of the home; a daughter, Pamela K. Wooten, of Winston-Salem; a son, John Mark Wooten, of Yadkinville; his mother, of Yadkinville; three sisters, Joan (D.C.) Swaim, of Jonesville, Becky (Larry) Moxley, of Boonville and Alice (Young) Jester of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Kenneth G. (Jan) Wooten, of Glade Valley, Gilbert B. (Collie) Wooten, of Boonville and Keith Wooten of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Sammy Shoaf and Brother D.C. Swaim. Mr. Wooten will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Hwy. 601 N., Yadkinville, N.C. Flowers will be accepted but memorials may be made to North Oak Ridge Baptist Church, North Oak Ridge Church Rd., Boonville, N.C. 27011.

ATKINS

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. William Roy Atkins, 67, of 540 Country Club Road, the husband of Eleanor Thomas Atkins, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at his home. Mr. Atkins was born in Surry County on June 3, 1934, the son of the late Howard and Lola Mace Atkins. Mr. Atkins was self-employed in the steel and bridge erection business, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict, and was of the Mormon faith. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Thomas Atkins of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Alan Hiatt and Mary and Jason Vindich, all of Mount Airy; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith Atkins, Rocky and Emma Atkins, Craig Atkins and Jeffery Atkins, all of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren, Shanna Hiatt Jones of Texas and Natasha Hiatt, Megan Atkins, Cory Hiatt, Cody Atkins, Nicholas Hiatt, Isaac Atkins, Jordan Atkins, and Matthew Vindich, all of Mount Airy; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mae and Herbert Mason, Rita and Bill Hiatt, Aura and James Akers and Faye and Paul Hiatt, all of Mount Airy; a brother, Jay Atkins of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Bishop Wayne Sheets, Elder Clyde Hiatt and Elder Alan Hiatt. Burial will be in the Indian Grove Baptist Church cemetery, with military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted.

BARRINGER

Drake Ethan Barringer, the infant son of Derrick and Jennifer Barringer, passed away Wednes-day, Dec. 26, 2001, at Wake Forrest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. Drake was born May 13, 2001. He was his parents special little angel and fought hard to stay here as long as he could. He is survived by his parents, Derrick and Jennifer Barringer, and a loving sister, Courtney Renee Barringer. Fun-eral services will be 2 p.m. Satur-day, Dec. 29, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall, with Dr. Jim Baldwin, the Rev. Gerald Jones and Chad Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends directly after the service. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the parents c/o Courtney Barringer. Our little angel here on Earth is now well and with the angels in Heaven.

CAUDLE

Mrs. Atrice Johnston Caudle of 4330 Charleston Drive, Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, in Willoughby, Ohio. Atrice was a member at Grace Baptist Temple for 15 years and Salem Baptist Church for 40 years. Atrice had lived in Forsyth County most of her life. Atrice graduated from Reynolds High School and from Mars Hill College. She was retired from the Forsyth County School System after 34 years of service. Mrs. Caudle was preceded in death by her mother, Clemmie Chandler Johnston; a son, Michael Thomas Caudle; and three brothers. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Thomas B. Caudle Jr.; a son, Robert Patrick Caudle and wife Carla of Orlando Fla.; a daughter, Janice Caudle of Willoughby, Ohio; and three granddaughters, Britany Shai, Brianne Mackenzie and Sarah Chandler. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Temple with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Temple Building Fund, 3305 Peters Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

CHEEK

Mrs. Sallie Doty Cheek, 98, of Winston-Salem, the widow of Jesse W. Cheek Sr., died Wednes-day, Dec. 26, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born July 12, 1903, to the late William B. and Julia Doty. She was a member of Vernon Forest Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was a son, Jesse W. Cheek Jr., in 1987. Sur-viving are a son, Bobby F. Cheek and wife Irene of Clemmons; three daughters, Norma C. Ball, Millie C. Holt and husband Charles and Lucille C. Collins and husband John, all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Fun-eral services will be 11 a.m., Satur-day, Dec. 29, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Bill James officiating. Inter-ment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home Friday, Dec. 28. Family members would like to express their many thanks to everyone at Silas Creek Manor for the love and care for their dearly beloved mother.

COOK

SILOAM - Mrs. Leona Macel Meadows Cook, 82, of Quaker Church Road, Siloam, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. She was born April 21, 1919, in Kawana County, W.Va., to James Wilbur and Laura Wiseman Meadows. Mrs. Cook was a retired manager of food services at Surry Community College and a member of Pine Hill Friends. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Clara Meadows of Jackson, Mich.; two nieces, Janet M. and Dennis McCormack of Mishawaka, Ind., and Judith Meadows of Jackson, Mich.; two nephews, Jerry M. and Margaret Meadows of Hebron, Ind., and Jim and Nid Meadows of Honolulu, Hawaii; and special friends Jo and Bobby Simpson of Pilot Mountain. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Carvey Lowanzy Cook; a sister, Marcella Weiford; and a brother, James Meadows. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Pine Hill Friends, conducted by Pastor Jon Reece and Brother Jerry Pardue. Interment will follow in the Pine Hills Friends cemetery. Mrs. Cook will lie in state one hour before the funeral services from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pine Hill Friends Meeting. The family will receive friends after the funeral services in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to the Pine Hill Friends Building Fund, c/o Crystal Fulk, 1102 Quaker Church Road, Siloam, NC 27047. KING - Mr. Robert Thomas "Bob" Crews, 82, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. He was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Stokes County. He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, William and Jennie Campbell Crews. Bob was a retired Stokes County farmer and was a member of Pinnacle Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lema Moore Crews; five daugh-ters, Nancy Mikels and husband Ben of King, Peggy Tuttle of Lexington, Lena Hall and husband Randall of Pinnacle, Janet Ridge of King and Rebecca Harrison and husband Gray of Arcadia; a son, Phillip Thomas Crews and wife Sherry of King; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the First Christian Church in King cemetery, with Brother Herbert Mabe officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but the family may be contacted at the home of the son, Phillip Crews, 2454 Slate Road, King. Memorials may be made to the Resident's Council of Rose Tara Plantation, 125 Plantation Drive, King, NC 27021; or to the cemetery Fund of First Christian Church, P.O. Box 504, King, NC 27021.

CUTHRELL

FLORENCE, S.C. - Mr. Michael Renard Cuthrell Sr., 45, passed away after a brief period of illness Dec. 26, 2001. He was born in Winston-Salem June 24, 1956, to Mary and George P. Cuthrell Jr. He graduated from Reynolds Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and resided in Syracuse, N.Y., where he worked at General Electric Co. He volunteered his time with the local Pop Warner Football and Little League Baseball teams. He was presently employed with Flavor Rich Milk Co. in Florence, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Cuthrell; a son, Michael Cuthrell Jr.; a daughter, Starr Cuthrell, all of New York; a son, Val Mark Cuthrell of Winston-Salem; three grand-children; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cuthrell Jr.; three brothers, Paul Cuthrell of Midway, George Cuthrell III (Sandra) of Advance and Terry Cuthrell of Winston-Salem; a sister, Andrea Cuthrell of Winston-Salem; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles; and a very special devoted friend, Ms. Mary Davis of Florence, S.C. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at 812 N. Spring St., Winston-Salem. Funeral arrangements will be held in Syracuse, N.Y., Jan. 5, 2002, at Garland Brothers Funeral Home (315-475-0285).

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Roberta Hart Dalton, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Arbor Acres. She was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Ayden to Alfonso and Velman Kirkman Hart. She was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Raymond A. Dalton of Clemmons; a son, William F. Dalton and wife Judith of Richmond, Va.; two grand-daugh-ters, Carrie Samantha Dalton and Jamie Diana Dalton, both of Richmond, Va.; and three sisters, Katherine Pickard of Durham, Vermile Bryan of Babson Park, Fla., and Princess Hart of Texas. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Clemmons United Methodist Church Chapel by the Rev. David Baxter and the Rev. Karla Farabow. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hills cemetery in Salisbury. Memorials may be made to Clemmons United Methodist Church Carpenters Fund, P.O. Box 329, Clemmons, NC 27012. Friends may pay their respect until 7 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

DELON

Mrs. Mabel Matheny DeLon, 94, died in the early morning hours of Dec. 24, 2001, at Meadowbrook of Davie. Mrs. Delon was a retired teacher from Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Letcher DeLon; and her parents, Mr. Winfred Donald Matheny and wife Sallie Ramsey Matheny. Mrs. DeLon is survived by two daughters, Kay DeLon Fendley and husband William of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Sarah DeLon Nelson and husband John of Clemmons; and five grand-children, Howell Fendley, Jay Nelson, Elliott Nelson, Blair Nelson and Jordan Nelson. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Mann's Mortuary in Knoxville, Tenn., with the Rev. Archie Fendley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Welch Memorial cemetery in Monterey, Tenn. No stated visitation is planned in Winston-Salem, but friends may contact the family at the home of Mrs. Sarah Nelson. Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church Bearden, 6300 Dean Hill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919.

DOTY

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Mary M. Vanhoy Doty, 95, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Lutheran Home of Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. Mrs. Doty was the widow of the late Frank Doty. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Oliver Wendell Styers and wife Ada and Dayne Douglas Doty and wife Diana, all of Walkertown; a stepson, Ray Doty of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Doty will be 11 a.m. Satur-day, Dec. 29, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall, with the Rev. Gary Styers officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory in Walker-town. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

EATON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Richard Fred Eaton Jr., 73, the husband of Margaret A. Eaton, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Howell Funeral Service of Mount Airy.

EVERHART

Clarence Neil Everhart Sr., 80, of 304 Park Ridge Circle died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. He was born March 12, 1921, in Forsyth County, a son of Rilley Leroy and Frankie Johnson Everhart. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army's Eighth Air Force in the European theater from January 1943 to August 1944. He received the Air Medal with three oak leaves, a Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Carol Sue Everhart Starling of Winston-Salem; four sons, Robert E. "Bob" Everhart and wife Patsy of Winston-Salem, Clarence Neil Everhart Jr. and wife Judy of Advance, Leroy Wilson Everhart and wife Vickie of Kernersville, and Jack David Everhart and wife Kathie of Pinnacle; a brother, the Rev. Richard F. Everhart of Lewisville; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Everhart, and a sister, Helen O'Brien Mendenhall. A memorial service will be con-ducted at 3 p.m. Friday at North-west Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy McKinney. The family will receive friends from 2 until 2:45 p.m. Friday at the church. HALL

Mr. Howard Ray Hall of Winston-Salem died Dec. 26, 2001. He was born April 4, 1926, in Lexie Crossroads, Tenn. Mr. Hall was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Vanderbilt University and an active member of the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, having served as both a president of the board of directors and as producer. He was formerly the associate director of development of Vanderbilt University Medical School of Nashville; director of development of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine; founding director of the Southeastern Association State Arts Agencies; and founding managing-producer of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Fannye Edmondson Hall of the home; a daughter, Gretchen Devlin Hall of Winston-Salem; a stepson, L. Steve Edmondson and family of Shelton, Wash.; a grandson, Leif Edmondson of Boise, Idaho; his mother, Johnny Hall of Cowan, Tenn.; and two brothers, Jack Hall of Tullahoma, Tenn., and E.E. Hall of Nashville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. To honor his ongoing belief in the importance of the fine arts and education, the family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Fine Arts Scholarship Fund, R.J. Reynolds High School, 301 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

HENDERSON

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Effie Trivette Henderson, 88, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hender-son was born May 19, 1913, in Yadkin County to Lazarus and Martha Ellen Crater Trivette. She was a homemaker, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and a charter member of the Shiloh WMU. Mrs. Henderson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Smith Henderson; five brothers, Lee, Paul, Charlie, Bruce and Hubert Trivette; and a sister, Cleo T. Crater. Surviving are six children, Garry (Linda) Henderson of Asheville, Tony (Kay) Henderson of Clemmons, Geraldine (Larry) Brannon of Hamptonville, Gay Nell H. (Jeff) Allen of Marianna, Fla., Tim Henderson of Winston-Salem, and George Lynn (Kim) Henderson of Hamptonville; a daughter-in-law; Carolyn M. Henderson of Hamptonville; nine grandchildren, Reneé Wishon, Wayne Henderson, Debbie Reavis, Kaye Walsh, Michael Henderson, Laura Brannon, Holly Henderson, Justin Henderson, Brock Hender-son; eight great-grandchildren, Andrew Wishon, Krysten Wishon, Jennifer Hutchens, Michelle Henderson, Ryan Henderson, April Reavis, Tracy Reavis, and Chelsea Reavis; special children Leigh Anne Shore and Darin Thomasson; a sister, Grace T. Upchurch of Winston-Salem; and four sisters-in-law, Etta Trivette, Daisy Trivette, Estelle Henderson and Lucille Windsor. The funeral service for Mrs. Henderson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Holbrook, Rev. Clint Branch and Rev. Dwight Dowell. Mrs. Henderson will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church, Youth Department, 5532 St. Paul Church Road, Hampton-ville, NC 27020. Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. 601 N., Yadkinville is serving the family.
