MARINO

CLEMMONS - Mr. Anthony "Tony" Marino, 70, of 525 Merrybrook Court, died Christ-mas morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 13, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Joseph and Angela Russo Marino. Mr. Marino moved to Clemmons five years ago from New York. He had served with the Marine Corps. during the Korean conflict. He was retired from Eastern Airlines. Mr. Marino was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was predeceased by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Ann Koch Marino; two sons, Vincent Marino and Michael Marino; a daughter, Angela Marino, all of the home; a brother, Frank Marino of New Salem, N.Y.; and a sister, Mildred Zafferese of California. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Adrian officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the National cemetery in Salisbury.

McCANLESS

WAKE FOREST - Master Orval Joseph "Joey" McCanless III, 11, of 3749 Sun Catcher Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Rex Health Care. Joey was born in Rockingham County, was a fifth-grade student at Fox Road Elementary School and a member of Saint Catherine's of Siena Roman Catholic Church. Joey was preceded in death by his father, Orval Joseph McCanless Jr. A Mass of resurrection will be held at 10 Saturday morning, Dec. 29, 2001, at Saint Catherine's of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Father Robert Kus officiating. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Danview cemetery in Eden. Joey is survived by his mother, Rachel Matzner of Wake Forest; sisters Fonda Matzner and Danielle McCanless, both of Wake Forest, Vonda Higgs of Eden and Ronda Dion of Winston-Salem; grandparents Orval Joseph McCanless Sr. and his wife Jewel of Eden, and Victor Matzner and his wife Connie of Wake Forest; a special friend, Mark Holmes of Wake Forest; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorial con-tributions may be made to Duke University Medical Center Children's Hospital, 512 S. Mangum St., Suite 400, Durham, NC 27701. MOUNT AIRY - Mikel Dean Newman, 37, of 302 Gray Lane went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mikel was born in Martinsville, Va., on April 9, 1964, to Walter Bobby and JoAnn Davis Newman. He was employed by Interstate Signs and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents, Walter Bobby and JoAnn Davis Newman of Mount Airy; his grandmother, Ocie Tickle Newman of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Tommy Thornburg of Mount Airy; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Angela Newman of Galax, Va., James Newman and his fiancée, Donna Douglas and Donnie and Tammy Newman, all of Mount Airy; 11 very loved nieces and nephews, Wendy Surratt, Bridgett Browder, Crystal Jenkins, Sheena Newman, Kaley Newman, Stephanie Mullins, Chris Newman, Matt Newman, Clay Norman, Matthew Norman and Richard Hernandez; 10 great-nieces and nephews, Derek Browder, Nadalee Browder, JoHana Surratt, Danny Ray Surratt, Tanner Jenkins, Kynzee "Mikel" Jenkins, Isabella Newman, Aliah Newman, Joseph Newman and Hope Newman; and two special aunts, Betty Marshall and Darlene Noyes. Mikel was preceded in death by his baby, "Mollie"; two sisters, Beverly Jean Newman and Linda Marie Newman; his grandfathers, James Gilbert Davis and Walter Wendell Newman; his grandmother, Thelma Marie Helms; and a special cousin, Richard Alan Marshall. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Butch Holder and the Rev. Aaron Butler. Burial in the Holy Cross Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday night at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

PFAFF

Mrs. Elizabeth Hagen Pfaff, 94, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, at her home. She was born June 7, 1907, in Lititz, Pa., to the Rev. Dr. Ernest S. Hagen and Jane Louise Copper Hagen. She attended Linden Hall Seminary in Lititz, Curtis High School in Staten Island and graduated cum laude from the Moravian College for Women in 1930. While in Bethlehem, Pa., she sang for six years in the Bethlehem Bach Choir. In Winston-Salem, she was active in community affairs as a member of the Girl Scout Council, YWCA Board and Dorcas Co-Workers. She was an active member of Home Moravian Church and served on the Women's Provincial Board for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Pfaff; two brothers, Chaplain John F. Hagen and Ernest S. Hagen; and a sister, Mary Hagen Mills. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Pfaff Dewees and husband John; a son, David Hagen Pfaff and wife Anita, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Douglas Pfaff and wife Pauline, Debbie Pfaff Faircloth, Fred Pfaff and wife Shannon, Andrew Dewees and Elizabeth Dewees; and seven great-grandchildren, Katie, Laura and Alanna Pfaff, Will and Jenna Faircloth, Ashley and David Pfaff. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Home Moravian Church. Interment will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The Rev. Lehoma Goode will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Vogler's Main Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fred W. and Elizabeth Hagen Pfaff Fund, c/o the Moravian Music Foundation, P.O. PICKETT

Mrs. Ruth Allen Pickett, 85, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Pickett was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Anson County to Cary B. Allen and Emma Jeannette Bow-man Allen. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was a member of College Park Baptist Church. She graduated from the N.C. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Pickett Sr. Mrs. Pickett is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann Pickett of Winston-Salem and Mary Allen Harper and husband Lars of Winston-Salem; a son, Robert L. Pickett Jr. and wife Ginny of Jamestown; and four grandchil-dren, Robert L. Pickett III, David J. Pickett, Margaret E. Harper and Sara A. Harper. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with Dr. James Baucom officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Mountain Outreach Ministries, c/o College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

RITCHIE

ADVANCE - Mr. John F. Ritchie, 83, passed away Christmas night at Bermuda Village. He is survived by Mabel Dunn Ritchie, his wife of 51 years; his daughter, Dorothy Spath and husband Charles M. Spath of Mansfield, Mass.; his sons, Dr. John E. Ritchie and wife Chris of Winston-Salem, Kenneth D. Ritchie and wife Christine Ritchie of Garden City, N.Y., and Stephen M. Ritchie of Winston-Salem. Mr. Ritchie was blessed with seven grandchildren: Megan, Claire and Andrea Ritchie of Winston-Salem, Brian and Kristin Spath of Mansfield, Mass., and Kenneth and Kyle Ritchie of Garden City, N.Y. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Ritchie of Ormond Beach, Fla., and George Ritchie of Swansboro; and a sister Kathleen Lee of Dover, Del. He had retired as the executive vice president of Mohawk Paper Mills in Cohoes, N.Y., and was a current member of its board of directors. Mr. Ritchie had been a member of Wolfert's Roost Country Club in Albany, N.Y., for 36 years. He was also a member of Plantation Country Club in Venice, Fla., and Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance. Mr. Ritchie graduated from Regis High School and Queens College in New York. As a CPA, he also received an MBA from New York University and a law degree from New York Law School. Mr. Ritchie had served as a captain in the Army Air Corps. during World War II. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Mrs. Billie Dula Rothrock, 72, of Winston-Salem died Dec. 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1929, in Winston-Salem to Ernest and Jessie Coone Dula. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Rothrock of the home; a daughter, Robin Whittington and husband Tim of Mocksville; and three grandchildren, Hannah Caroline, Clayton Garrett and Sterling Roy Whittington. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ at Boyers cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. BURLINGTON - Mrs. Faye Barber Sharpe, 52, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel and Crematory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

SHAW

BELEWS CREEK - Mrs. Vaudie Lou Landreth Shaw, 64, of 5470 Reidsville Road died Wednesday Dec. 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem. Mrs. Shaw was born in Stokes County and was a daughter of the late James Guthrie and Carrie Martin Landreth and was an employee of Burlington Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Simpson Shaw, in July 1996. Surviving are a dear friend and companion, Rex Cutrell of the home; three daughters, Robin L. Stewart of Archdale, Anita Shaw of Mocksville and Kim Shaw of Kernersville; a son, Harold G. Shaw of Kernersville; four sisters, Rachel Snow, Helen Scott, Nancy Harris and Mozelle Mabe; two brothers, James Landreth and Wallace Landreth; and seven grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville. Family members would like to express their sincere appreciation for the special care that was extended by the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home to their mother while a patient at the home. SIMS

Mrs. Pauline Lash Sims, of 1625 E. Third St. 109-A, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at the Brian Center after an extended illness. She was the only daughter of the late Berkley and Myrtle Lash, attended the local public school system and was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was a member of the Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on both the Deaconess Board and the Mothers Board until her health declined. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon George Sims. She is survived by a devoted son, John (Felicia) Lash Sr. of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, LaVada (Vaniel) Danzy of Winston-Salem, John A. Lash Jr. of Huntersville, and Wendy S. Snow of Charlotte; three great-grandchildren, LaMichea D. Lash of Charlotte, LaTia A. Hairston of Charlotte, and Reginald A. Tindall Jr. of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Conrad Lash of Bethania, and William (Barbara) Lash of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ann Lash of Chester, Pa., and Mrs. Virginia Lash of Bethania; a devoted caregiver, Ms. Francine Jones; a godson, Mr. Willie (Gwen) Cole, all of Winston-Salem; a host of dedicated nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.R. Samuels officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. THOMAS

Mr. William C. Thomas, better known as Chester, died Wednes-day morning, Dec. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Burnsville to Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie and Emma Thomas. For the past 45 years, Chester resided at 2527 Manchester St. and left his legacy upon family and friends. Chester was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Burnsville. He was a graduate of the West Ansonville Senior High School. After operating the family's sawmills, he moved his family to Winston-Salem in 1954. Chester worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Henning Trucking Co., before he joined the Goodwill Industries, from where he retired June 2001. Chester was an advocate of humanity and he spent his life helping and servicing his fellow friends and associates. After retirement, Chester continued to serve his community by joining the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Chester loved all sports and was a strong supporter of Winston-Salem Little League baseball and Pop Warner football teams. He was also a member of the Professional Bowling League. Chester was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Ressie Thomas; and two sons, Everett D. Thomas and Theodore L. Thomas, respectively. His wife, Tawanna H. Thomas, survives him along with his three children, a son, Thaddeus A. Thomas and wife Elaine, a stepson, Barney D. Harris and a stepdaughter, Kellie Gaines; a sister, Sadie Dalton; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Forsyth Funeral Home. Viewing of the body will begin at 11 a.m. and will end at noon sharp. After the service, the family will transport the body to Fairview Baptist Church in Anson County for interment at the family's plot.

THOMASON

WELCOME - Orabelle Vanhoy Thomason, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Center United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel.

BOYD

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Norma Elizabeth Livengood Boyd, 62, of 1876 Greenhill Road, Mount Airy, wife of Dr. Stanley Boyd, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Boyd was born July 19, 1939, in Surry County, the daughter of Mrs. Marie Norman Livengood and the late Mr. Foy Livengood. Mrs. Boyd was a homemaker and was of the Moravian faith. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Stanley Boyd of the home; her mother, Mrs. Marie Norman Livengood of Kernersville; a sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Randy Epperson of Kernersville; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Alberta Livengood of Mount Airy; three stepdaughters and spouses, Barbara and Wayne Norman of Kernersville, Gail and Tom Larkin of Marietta, Ga., and Debra and Worth Wilson of Greensboro; and three stepgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Grace Moravian Church, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Byerly. Interment will be in God's Acre. There will not be a visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stanley and Norma Boyd Scholarship Fund of Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the Boyd family.

CRAIG

KING - Mrs. Sadie Onez Craddock Craig, 86, of King passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 30, 1915, to Bob and Susan Stephen Craddock. Mrs. Craig was a member of the Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church, a homemaker and a member of King American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Faithie Willard of King and Patsy Mitchell Hosey and husband Emmett of Mount Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, J.D. Craig and wife Bonnie of King, Billy Craig and wife Mary of Monroe, R. Delano Craig and wife Pauline of King and Walter Craig Jr. and wife Liz of King; a foster son, Bobby Clark and wife Jane of King; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a special grandson, Mark Mitchell of Mount Airy. Mrs. Craig was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Craig Sr., a grandson and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elder Weldon Joyce and Elder Vance Jones. Interment will follow in the Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. DAWLEY

OAK ISLAND - Mrs. Louise S. Dawley, of 108 SW 25th St., Oak Island, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 at Peacock-Newnam Chapel. Mrs. Dawley was born in Roanoke, Va., daughter of the late Alphonse and Tina Mae Huntsinger Stultz. After marrying her husband, Earl Dawley, she moved about the country and visited various parts of the world, finally moving to Oak Island. One of her passions was her flower garden, and she loved all animals. She was a former member of Peace Haven Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was a volunteer with the Winston-Salem Humane Society. Survivors include her husband, Earl Dawley of the home; two sons, Thomas Earl Dawley and his wife, Melissa, of Liberty, and Thomas Gardner of Westminster, Colo.; two sisters, Inez Hunt and her husband, Claude, of High Point and Hazel Yurich and her husband, Joe, of Eden; two grandchildren, Brandon and Brittney Dawley, both of Liberty. DeHART

Mr. Robert Rufus DeHart, 65, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 28,2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. DeHart was born March 24, 1936, in Macon County to Bryan and Edna Cabe DeHart. He was a member of Tellico Baptist Church in Franklin. He is survived by his sister, Miss Oma Lee DeHart of the home; a brother, John DeHart of Clemmons; a half brother, Troy DeHart of Wisconsin and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Chris Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

GRIER

Mr. Oloff B. Grier, 86, of 1702 New Walkertown Road was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at his residence. He was born on Jan. 17, 1915, to the late Parks and Daisy Grier in Winston-Salem. He retired from the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after serving 32 faithful years as a factory worker. Mr. Grier was a member of Hanes CME Church, where he was a steward and served on the Senior Usher Board. He also was an avid gardener and a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Parks and Daisy Grier; his wife, Maggie W. Grier; brothers, Otto, Nathaniel, Weldon, Paul and Frank; sisters, Annie Bell, Nannie, Mattie, Catherine and Mary Jane. Mr. Grier leaves to cherish his loving memories two sons, Rudolph Pearson of New York City and Michael Grier of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Betty Jean Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and "Mary-Alice" Youngblood of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Willie Grier Sr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Henry Mack Grier of Winston-Salem; three generations of grandchildren; four generations of nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law, Luree James of Florence, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Pauline Grier of Philadelphia, Pa.; a devoted friend of 14 years, Sara I. Rose, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, from the Hanes Memorial CME Church, where the Rev. Rayfield Medcalf will officiate and the Rev. Craig Ingram will provide the eulogy. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. today at Gilmore Funeral Home at 1609 N. Liberty St. and other times at the residence. The funeral cortege will assemble at and leave from the residence both today and Monday. Arrangements entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)
