HICKS

Mrs. Runell Cain Hicks, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Hicks was born May 31, 1925, in Surry County to Floyd and Pearlie Sutphin Cain. She was retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 371/2 years of service. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Eugene Hicks. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Hicks and wife, Anne-Marie of Lewisville and Vance E. Hicks Jr. of Clemmons Village Assisted Living; two grandchildren, Rachelle Parks of Winston-Salem and Amanda Hicks of Lewisville; a great grandchild, Haley Parks; five sisters, Estelle Barker, Lannie Lowe, Geraldine Richardson, Peggy Marion, all of Surry County and Hilda Gray Dean of Virginia; a brother, Pete Cain of Virginia. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Otis Clampitt and the Rev. David Maynard officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HUFFMAN

HAYS - Mr. Ursel Mansfield Huffman, 74, of Mountain View Road, Hays, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at his home. Mr. Huffman was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Wilkes County to Christopher M. and Carrie Alice Ethel McNeil Huffman. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the North Wilkesboro Masonic Lodge #45. He was retired from Pilot Freight Carriers. Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Billings Huffman of the home; a son, Danny Huffman of Wilkesboro; three daughters, Kim Elledge of Hays, Cathy Thornton and Crissy Wiles, both of North Wilkesboro; a brother, Clifford Huffman of Purlear; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Wiles and the Rev. Ricky Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial with military rites by the VFW Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 69, Hays, NC 28635.

JONES

Mrs. LaRue W. Jones passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 28, 2001. She was born to Numa F. Wall and Etta S. Wall on May 11, 1915. Three infant brothers and both of her parents preceded her in death. Her loving husband, Merlin J. Jones also preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1974. She was a lifelong member of Doub's United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Doub's United Methodist Women. In addition, she provided a loving foster home for more than 25 years, the last being three sisters, Michelle, Donna and Lynn. Her son, Orval W. Jones and wife, Sylvia of Pfafftown and her daughter, Shelba J. Rominger and husband, Curtis of Pfafftown survive her. She has four grandchildren, Eric W. Jones and wife Sonja of Winston-Salem, Brent N. Jones and wife Kristen of Morrisville, Bradley N. Rominger and fiancee Gwen Staker of Pfafftown, and Amber R. Gutierrez and husband Julio of Winston-Salem. She has two great-grandchildren, Esperanza LaRue Gutierrez and Zachary Nelson Jones. Visitation will be at Doub's United Methodist Church, 5591 Seward Road, Pfafftown, Sunday an hour prior to services at 3 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dwight Cartner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice-Palliative CareCenter; Doub's United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

McCULLOUGH

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Helen T. McCullough of 1611 McPherson St. passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. She was a native of Orangeburg, S.C. Mrs. McCullough was a member of Mount Zion United Church of God where she was on the Mothers Board. While in Winston-Salem, she was a member of Mercy Seat Holiness Church where she was a faithful member. She is survived by a faithful and dedicated husband, Alonzo W. McCullough of the home; a daughter, Barbara M. Shuler of Greensboro; two sons, Alonzo W. McCullough, Jr. (Linda) of Fort Smith, Ark., and Ronald McCullough of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Adele Fair of Winston-Salem; a brother, David Lee Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Mount Zion United Church of God, where Elder Bernard Curry will officiate and interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. The remains will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001. The family may be contacted at the residence. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit FuneralServices of Winston-Salem.

NEWMAN

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Bertha Billings Ray Newman, 94, of State Road passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Newman was born in Wilkes County March 2, 1907, to Sam and Delia Billings. Mrs. Newman was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Jackie Newman and a grandson, Greg Newman. Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Billie Newman of Clinton Township, Mich., Bobby and Betty Newman of Elkin, Jim and Lillian Newman, Don and Lorene Newman, all of State Road, and Johnny Newman of Thurmond; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Wayne Wagoner of Winston-Salem, Reba and Richard Brown of Traphill and Nell Newman of State Road; two sisters, Beatrice Eckhardt of Baltimore, Md., and Eva Tucker of Elkin; a brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Milford Billings of State Road; 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Hensley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Newman will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

ROGERS

ENUMCLAW, Wash. - Bettye Joyce Henderson Rogers entered the presence of the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Enumclaw Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and raised in Oklahoma City, Okla. She joins her husband, Ross Rogers who went to be with the Lord in October of 1967 at the age of 44. He was her soul mate and the love of her life. Together they raised two daughters and a son who, along with their seven grandchildren, are all serving the Lord today. Mother was a friendly, approachable, gentle lady who enjoyed being around happy people with a sense of humor. She was a sweet, gracious, kind and friendly person who felt love, acceptance, concern and genuine interest for others. She was a godly example of peace, patience and inner strength. We always knew we had her love, support and prayers. She was a joy to be around. She was organized, well-informed on current events, and fascinated by new people and ideas. She loved her family, her friends, and animals (especially dogs). She will be remembered for her many strengths and for her strong Christian walk and devoted prayer life. Bettye is survived by her three children, Candis Morton and husband Rockie of San Diego, Calif., Rosalyn Goodall and husband Wayde of Clemmons, Ross Scott Rogers and wife Donna of Enumclaw, Wash.; and her seven grandchildren, Damon Boswell, Lonnie Boswell, Jeremy Goodall, Kristin Goodall, Ross Rogers, Mindy Rogers and Grant Rogers. A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Mount. Rainier Christian Center in Enumclaw, Wash. Memorial gifts may be directed to Mount Rainier Christian Center Building Fund, P.O. Box 649, 43811 244th Ave. SE, Enumclaw, WA 98022.

RUTLEDGE

Charles Edward Rutledge, affectionately known as "Tojo", of 1607 Cleveland Ave., passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center after a period of illness. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where he was a former employee of Hanes Mall. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martina Rutledge Cauthen and a sister, Cherrie Ann Banner. Surviving are four daughters, Linda Rutledge, Tisha, Arlene and April Cowan, all of Winston-Salem; their mother, Linda; three grandchildren; his father, Lewis Rutledge; two sisters, Betty Rutledge-Grant and Doris Rutledge; three brothers, Archie Banner and James Banner, all of Winston-Salem and Preston Banner of California; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Evergreen cemetery, with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. SECHREST

LEXINGTON - Terry Wayne Sechrest, 45, of 110 Oak Ave. died Friday, Dec. 28 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after an illness of eight months. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Sechrest was born Jan. 20, 1956, in Davidson County to Billy Ray Sechrest Sr. and Joyce Honeycutt Sechrest. He was employed by Lexington Home Brand, Plant 4, and was preceded in death by his father. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his mother, Joyce Sechrest of Lexington; a special friend, James Edward Woodie of Piney Creek; brothers, Bill Sechrest Jr. and wife, Judy of Southmont and Mark Sechrest and wife, Teresa of Salisbury; sisters, Vicky Love and husband, Arthur of Denton and Judy Murray and husband, Ernest of Southmont. SMITH

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Mrs. Margaret Sloan Smith, 79, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 25, 2001, in Bridgeport, Conn., following a lengthy illness. She was born in Winston-Salem to the late Nonie Sloan Benton. Mrs. Smith, a retired beautician, was a former member of Hanes Memorial CME Church and after moving to Bridgeport, Conn., became an active member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nonie Sloan Benton, and her brother, the Rev. Louis R. Sloan. Surviving are her husband, James P. Smith of Bridgeport, Conn.; two stepsons, James F. Smith (Gloria) of Bronx, N.Y.; James Earl Smith of Bronx, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Christina Robinson, Charlotte; a sister, Mary Sloan Jones of Oak Summit Nursing Center in Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Evelyn S. Sloan of Winston-Salem; three nieces, Brenda D. Sloan of Fredericksburg, Va., Alice S. Clark Carter of Winston-Salem and Lois M. Sloan of Bridgeport, Conn.; a nephew, Louis Roger Sloan Jr. (Ardell) of Winston-Salem; six great-nieces; five great-nephews; eleven great-great-nieces; seven great-great-nephews and several cousins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Hooper Funeral Home with interment following in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour at the funeral home and may be contact-Led at the home of Evelyn Sloan, 909 W. 20th St. (Hooper)

TULBERT

UNION GROVE - Mr. Clyde Leon Tulbert, 85, of 116 Zion Liberty Road, Union Grove, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Dec. 29, 2001, at his home. Mr. Tulbert was born in the Windsor Crossroads Community of Yadkin County on June 16, 1916, and was the son of the late Edward Levi Tulbert and Sarah Anue Windsor Tulbert. He was a self-employed plumber and farmer and had been a member of Zion Baptist Church in Union Grove since 1938. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, Frank Tulbert, Levi Tulbert, Jesse Tulbert, Paul Tulbert, Lillie Mae Tulbert Mullis and Ethel Tulbert Moorefield. Mr. Tulbert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Willie Mae Sale Tulbert; five children, Rebecca Tulbert White Poplin and husband, Charles of Statesville, William Franklin Tulbert and wife, Pamela of Mooresville, Stephen Elijah Tulbert and wife, Carol of Union Grove, Daniel DeLeon Tulbert and wife, Diane of Hamptonville and Mark Kavin Dale Tulbert of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving is a foster sister, Maxine Cranfill of Statesville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Shaw officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Zion Baptist Church from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday. BENSON

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. John Greene Benson, 82, of Lexington Road died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Davie County to the late Jane Isabelle Thompson and Felix K. Benson. Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Lucille Smith Benson, six brothers and three sisters and also his parents. He is survived by a son, Mark Benson of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Shannon B. Lashmit, Joey Lee Benson of Mocksville and Alexis Nicole Benson of Michigan; two great-grandchildren, Richard A. and Mason G. Lashmit of Mocksville; a brother, William H. Benson of Charlotte and a sister, Dorothy B. Keller of Mocksville. Mr. Benson was of the Baptist faith. He was employed with J.P. Milling Co. as a salesman. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Rose cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Cox and the Rev. Rex Podunvac officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home, Sunday, Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and also at the home of Shannon Lashmit on Salisbury Street at other times. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, 2722 U.S. Highway 601 South, Mocksville, N.C. Davie Funeral Home Inc. 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, is serving the Benson family.

BLACK

FRUITLAND, Md. - Gregory Ryder Black, 38, of Salisbury, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002. Born in South Miami, Fla., he was the son of Barbara Jones Black and the late Robert Gene Black. Mr. Black received his B.A. in political science from Appalachian State University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, Md., from which he graduated in the top 13% of his class. He was currently employed by Cooke and Associates in Towson, Md. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Rachel MacKenzie Black and Hannah Elizabeth Black, the mother of his daughters, Tracy Black of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jeff Black of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Lori Hochman of Yarmouth, Maine, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Salisbury, Md., where friends may call an hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. David C. Tontonoz will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rachel and Hannah Black Education Fund, c/o Curtis Massey, 27199 Loch Lomond Court, Salisbury, MD 21801. Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Bounds Funeral Home in Salisbury, Md.

LEXINGTON - Mary Elizabeth Waldeck Blake, 80, the wife of the late Mark Edward Blake, died Friday. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel.

BRYANT

BOONVILLE - Mr. J. Frank Bryant, 74, of Bryant Road passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Aug. 17, 1927, the son of Julius Frank and Dixie Miller Bryant of Boonville. Mr. Bryant was a retired dairy and tobacco farmer. He was very active in the community and state civic affairs. He served in the N.C. House of Representatives representing Yadkin County, a member of the Board of Directors of the N.C. Farm Bureau for over 25 years and served several years as vice president, a member of the board of directors for the Carolina-Virginia Milk Producers Association, served as chairman of the Federal Five-State Flue-Cured Tobacco Committee, served on the Board of Directors of the Tobacco Stabilization and Tobacco Associates, vice president of the N.C. Agribusiness Council, served as president of the N.C. Agricultural Foundation at N.C. State University, was supervisor with the Winston-Salem Tobacco Market, served as president and chairman of the board of directors of the Northwest N.C. Development Association; member of the Dixie Classic Fair Commission and Memorial Coliseum Commission. Mr. Bryant attended Wake Forest University, was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He was selected as "Tar Heel of the Week" by the Raleigh News and Observer and was a member of Boonville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, a brother, Herbert Bryant of Goldsboro, and a sister, Ruth and husband Grady Spainhour, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Martin Bryant, formerly of Winston-Salem; a son, Steve and wife Dawn Bryant of Raleigh; daughter, Debra Bryant of Washington, D.C.; son, Jay and wife Denita Bryant of Oakton, Va.; grandchildren, Katie, Kelly and George Bryant and Kori Reece; three sisters, Irene and husband Lawrence Stinson, Roselyn and husband Harvey Smith of Boonville and Ann and husband Dale Shaw, all of Boonville; a brother, Sherrill and wife Alice Lee Bryant of Bridgewater, Va.; a sister-in-law, Gaye Bryant of Goldsboro; and eight nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Boonville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Marion Swann. He will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North, Yadkinville. Memorials may be made to the Boonville United Methodist Church Choir Fund or to the N.C. Farm Bureau Scholarship Fund.

CHANDLER

MOUNT AIRY - Leonard Ray Chandler, 67, the husband of Mary Childress Chandler, died Friday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy.

CHURCH

Mrs. Myrlie Lee Church, 68, of 411-1 Magnolia Branch Drive died Jan. 5, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Meadow Bridge, W.Va., to Clarence Edward and Grace Patterson Church. Mrs. Church was a member of the United Methodist Church of Swansboro, where for 25 years she was a choir member. Mrs. Church retired after 30 years of service with the U.S. Government. Survivors include a son and his wife, Steven and Ashley Hamman of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Judi Scott of Gilbert, Ariz., and Rebecca Hamman of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Bill Church, Stanley Church, Larry Church, and Doug Church, all of Meadow Bridge, W.Va.; four sisters, Doris Kirschvink and Mildred Muir, both of Meadow Bridge, W.Va., Patti Church of Lake City, Fla., and Marion Lipscomb of Mobile, Ala., and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the Church family.

CROMER

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Mildred Cromer, 96, of Walnut Cove, wife of R. Elmo Cromer, died Saturday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was a lifetime resident of Stokes County. She taught in the Stokes County School System for 45 years, mostly in Walnut Cove. Mrs. Cromer will be remembered for giving a silver dollar to the high-school graduates who started out in her class. She was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church. She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and -nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Quaker Gap Baptist Church. Dr. Jim Baldwin will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
