THOMAS

KERNERSVILLE - Julia Ann "Judy" Thomas passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002. Judy was born on Christmas Eve 1939. She never attended school and never married. She never had children or held a steady job. She never served on a committee or ran for public office. Judy's Down syndrome may have prevented her from many of the accomplishments and milestones that we take for granted, but it never prevented her from living a life filled with the simplest of faiths and most genuine of perspectives. Her faith in God never changed -why should it? The song says, "Jesus loves me," and that should be quite enough proof for anyone. She was excited to meet new people and had no perception of color or socio-economic status. You either charmed her or you didn't. With an affection for photographs, Elvis, Rice Krispy treats, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Diet Coke, she knew exactly what she liked - exactly what she liked. She was a singer, a dancer, a disciplinarian, a philosopher, a custodian, a medallist in the Special Olympics, a friend, a sister, a daughter, an aunt and her greatest achievement was that she lived. Judy was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Darwin Thomas of Black Mountain, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by two brothers, her twin brother, Raymond D. Thomas of Kernersville, and Charles D. Thomas Jr. of Montreat and their wives, Patricia T. Thomas and Mariah S. Thomas. She is also survived by three nieces and two nephews, Jennifer T. Hedrick, Betsy D. Thomas, Elizabeth T. Thomas, Drake S. Thomas and Charles D. Thomas III. Judy formerly resided in Rouse's Group Home in Stoneville and is survived by her "special" family there. Due to declining health, she resided at The Oaks at Forsyth in Winston-Salem for the past two years, where she received loving care. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Special Olympics, 100 Liberty Walk, Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or to the United Methodist Agency for the Retarded, PO Box 11332, Charlotte, NC 28220-1332. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. in the church parlor. Burial will follow in the church's cemetery. Arrange-ments made through Hanes-Lineberry, formerly Pierce Funeral Home.
