KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Marie Riggin Mite, 73, of Madison Place Circle, died Dec. 25, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. She was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Norristown, Pa., a daughter of Raymond Lloyd and Josephine Tulish Riggin. She cared for her daughter, Carol, and enjoyed spending time with her family. Surviving are three daughters, Carol Scarafone, and Sandy Black, both of Kernersville,and Cleo Lowe of Dartmouth, Mass.; three sisters, Edna Teague of Norristown, Pa., Eleanor Davis of Valley Forge, Pa., and Josephine Sweisfort of Roanoke, Va; three granddaughters, Danell Black-Sharpe and her husband Kevin, and Brandi Black of Kernersville, and Maria Powers; three great-grandchildren, Marissa Black Motsinger of Kernersville, Paul Franklin Powers, and Shaun Francis Glassmir III. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville by the Rev. Don Martin. Burial will follow in Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Carol Scarafone, 712 Madison Place Circle, Apt 712, Kernersville, NC 27284.

MOSLEY

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Mary "Frances" Lee Mosley, 78, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001. She was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Surry County to John B. and Hattie Woodruff Lee. Mrs. Mosley was a former resident of Cana, Va., and was a member of the Lambsburg Baptist Church in Lambsburg, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William Franklin Mosley. Surviving are four nieces, Judy Wall (husband Roger) of Walkertown, Pat Smith of Decatur, Ala., Joyce McDaniel (husband J.D.) of Pilot Mountain, and Carol Wadford (husband Jack) of King; two nephews, Ronald Cranfill (wife Wanda), and Robert Cranfill (wife Kathy), all of Tyro; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Hay-worth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Senior Services Inc., Home Care, 836 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

PARSONS

Mrs. Julia Martin Parsons, 93, the widow of Reginald Edgar Parsons, died Dec. 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Parsons was born Nov. 21, 1908, in Charlotte, to the late Franklin Augustus and Julia Gray Martin. She attended Queens College and Longwood College in Farmville, Va. She taught kindergarten and Sunday school at Myers Park Methodist Church and Myers Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Parsons is a former Charity League member and was co-chairwoman of the Best Years Club at Myers Park Methodist Church. She was a member Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and a member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Parsons is survived by her daughter, Julia P. Hardy and husband Nash E. Hardy Jr. of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Nash E. Hardy III and wife Sheri Hardy of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Martin Hardy of Chapel Hill. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28 at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Rev. Jack Yarbrough will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Acres Assistance Endow-ment Fund, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. The family will receive friends after the service at 3404 Paddington Lane. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

PICKETT

Mrs. Ruth Allen Pickett, 85, of 4050 Tangle Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Pickett was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Anson County to Cary B. Allen and Emma Jeannette Bowman Allen. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was a member of College Park Baptist Church. She was a graduate of the N. C. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Pickett Sr. Mrs. Pickett is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann Pickett of Winston-Salem, and Mary Allen Harper and husband Lars of Winston-Salem; a son, Robert L. Pickett Jr. and wife Ginny of Jamestown; and four grandchildren, Robert L. Pickett III, David J. Pickett, Margaret E. Harper, and Sara A. Harper. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. James Baucom officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mountain Outreach Ministries, c/o College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

RITCHIE

ADVANCE - Mr. John F. Ritchie, 83, passed away Christmas night at Bermuda Village. He is survived by Mabel Dunn Ritchie, his wife of 51 years; his daughter, Dorothy Spath and husband Charles M. Spath of Mansfield, Mass.; his sons, Dr. John E. Ritchie and wife Chris of Winston-Salem, Kenneth D. Ritchie and wife Christine Ritchie of Garden City, N.Y., and Stephen M. Ritchie of Winston-Salem. Mr. Ritchie was blessed with seven grandchildren: Megan, Claire and Andrea Ritchie of Winston-Salem, Brian and Kristin Spath of Mansfield, Mass., and Kenneth and Kyle Ritchie of Garden City, N.Y. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Ritchie of Ormond Beach, Fla., and George Ritchie of Swansboro; and a sister Kathleen Lee of Dover, Del. He had retired as the executive vice president of Mohawk Paper Mills in Cohoes, N.Y., and was a current member of its board of directors. Mr. Ritchie had been a member of Wolfert's Roost Country Club in Albany, N.Y., for 36 years. He was also a member of Plantation Country Club in Venice, Fla., and Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance. Mr. Ritchie graduated from Regis High School and Queens College in New York. As a CPA, he also received an MBA from New York University and a law degree from New York Law School. Mr. Ritchie had served as a captain in the Army Air Corps. during World War II. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. After a rosary service at 7 p.m. Thursday, the family will receive friends until 9 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice, 1001-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the Sept. 11 Fund, in care of the American Red Cross Liberty Fund, P.O. Box 97089, Washington, DC 20090.

SCALES

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Mr. Waightstill "Booger" Morehead Scales Jr., 77, an insurance salesman with Integon Corp., formerly Security Life and Trust, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001. The funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Cherry Hill cemetery. Among the survivors is a daughter, Margaret Scales, and her husband Graydon Pleasants Jr. of Winston-Salem. Arrange-ments are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory, Greenville.

SCHNEIDER

LUMBERTON - Mrs. Ruby Lapish Schneider, 64, died Wednesday morning Dec. 26, 2001, at South Eastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. Mrs. Schneider was the widow of the late Francis Schneider. She was also a loving mother and grandmother. Surviving are a daughter, Sylvia Lapish Luffman and husband Larry of Pinnacle; three granddaughters, Stephanie Bobbit of Pinnacle, Michelle Beck of Dobson, and Kellie Luffman of Pinnacle; three great-grand-children, Samantha Alexander, Jodon Beck and Taylor Alexander; four sisters, Peggy Hayes, Ila Edward, Patricia Spivy and Edna Laird; two brothers, Sam Lapish and Major Lapish; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel, with Mr. Bill Teague officiating.

SHAW

BELEWS CREEK - Mrs. Vaudie Lou Landreth Shaw, 64, of 5470 Reidsville Road, died Wednesday Dec. 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem. Mrs. Shaw was born in Stokes County and was a daughter of the late James Guthrie and Carrie Martin Landreth and was an employee of Burlington Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Simpson Shaw in July 1996. Surviving are a dear friend and companion, Rex Cutrell of the home; three daughters, Robin L. Stewart of Archdale, Anita Shaw of Mocksville, and Kim Shaw of Kernersville; a son Harold G. Shaw of Kernersville; four sisters, Rachel Snow, Helen Scott, Nancy Harris, and Mozelle Mabe; two brothers, James Landreth, and Wallace Landreth; and seven grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the special care that was extended by the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home to their mother while a patient at the home. TATUM

STUART, Va. - Mrs. Mary Alice Tatum, 88, died Dec. 24, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Peggy T. Williams, in Prince Frederick, Md., following a lengthy illness. Born in High Point Dec. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Pinkney E. and Percy Leigh Grissom Jones. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 65 years, William Clarence Tatum Sr.; and two sons, William Clarence Tatum Jr. and Bobby Lee "Chic" Tatum. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Rich) Williams of Prince Frederick, Md., and Rebecca (Bill) Deatherage of Lawsonville; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a beloved sister, Mabel Jones Beeson of High Point; and a daughter-in-law, Pauline Martin Tatum of Stuart, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She leaves behind many dear friends and neighbors. Mrs. Tatum was a member of the Creasey's Chapel Methodist Church, and she spent the greater part of her life looking after and caring for others. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart, Va. Burial will follow in the Tatum Family cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.

TWYMAN

HIGH POINT - Master Police Officer III Shelia Baker Twyman, 47, a resident of 1214 Biltmore Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Officer Twyman was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Greensboro, a daughter of Leroy and Hazel Rankin Baker. She was a member of the graduating class of '72 at Dudley High School. She attended GTCC, graduated from Guilford College and received her master's in adult education from N.C. A&T State University. Officer Twyman taught at Randolph Technical School and was a member of the North State Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Furniture City chapter. She had been a member of the High Point Police Department for 13 years, where she served in a number of capacities during her tenure. Surviving are two daughters, Shesteishia of the home and Shamia Twyman of High Point; a son, Scott Twyman of High Point; two brothers, Donald Rankin of the home, and Michael Baker of High Point; adopted sisters Annie Short of Greensboro, Dianne Lofton of Greensboro, Debra Pitman of Rocky Mount, Gretta Bush of High Point, Annie White of High Point, Sandra Boone of High Point and Patricia McDaniel of Greensboro; her uncle, Lee James of Greensboro; her aunt, Ruth Young of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Lanautica, Jordan, Quanisha and Javon Twyman. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 801 S. Centennial St. Funeral services for Officer Twyman will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church, 821 Leonard St., conducted by the Rev. Johnnie T. Lofton and the Rev. Dr. Gene A. Taylor. Interment with police honors will be conducted by the High Point Police Department Honor Guard at Mapelwood cemetery in Greensboro. Officer Twyman will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., until placed into the church at 9 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Memorials are requested to be directed to Bethlehem Baptist Church, 801 S. Centennial St., High Point, NC 27260; or to the Trust Fund for Officer Twyman's children c/o Wachovia Bank & Trust, 200 N. Main St., High Point, NC 27260.

VANDORSTEN

CHARLESTON - -Elizabeth Jones VanDorsten, the widow of John William VanDorsten, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Dec. 25, 2001. Private graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. VanDorsten was born Sept. 25, 1911, in Crozet, Va., the daughter of James Harry Jones and Myrtle Adele Towsey Jones. She was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth College and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. She is survived by a son, Dr. James Peter VanDorsten of Charleston; a daughter, Susan VanDorsten King of Laurinburg; a sister, Mavis J. Parker of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, John Jones, Ray Jones and Robert Jones, all of Crozet; three grandchildren, Katherine VanDorsten, Van King and Peter King. Memorials may be made to Bishop Gadsden Retirement Center, 1 Gadsden Way, Charles-ton, SC 29412; or the Scotia Village Retirement Home, Elms Street, Laurinburg, NC 28352. WILKINSON

MARION - James Kelly Wilkinson, 80, of 280 Broad St. died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Asheville. Born in McDowell County to the late Jay French and Flora Etta Brooks Wilkinson, he was one of the owners of Etta Paper Box Co. and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Mystic Tie Lodge No. 237 of Marion. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Williams Wilkinson; two sons, James Kelly Wilkinson Jr. and Robert Preston Wilkinson, both of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Dorothy Jean Wilkinson of Boone, and Deborah Butler of Morgan-ton; and seven grandchildren, Keith Robinson, Joshua Butler, Ray Butler, Travis Butler, Kelly Wilkinson, Laura Wilkinson, and Alex Wilkinson. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Marion First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. George Hutchins will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 124 W. Fort St., Marion, NC 28762. BATEMAN

MIDWAY - Mr. Roger Don Bateman, 61, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home leaving us with many treasured memories. He was a familiar face at both Baptist and Forsyth Hospitals, where he based his business, Commercial Installers. He was a member of the Gold Wing Riders Association. He was also involved in many civic organizations. Don was a loving husband to Jo Ann Bateman, dedicated father to Rena Bateman, Van Bateman, Thad Bateman and Donna Redd and a wonderful PaPa to Paige and Ashton Redd. He will also be missed by his mother, Hope Mills Bateman; a brother, Robert Bateman; four sisters, Helen Nelson, Aleen Gordon, Nelda Jester and Mary Alice Bennett; a son-in-law, Greg Redd; two special friends, Dee Duggins and Tami Moore, their children and many friends and family whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Harvey Bateman and a brother, Jake Bateman. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

BRADY

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. George Washington Brady, 87, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001. He was born to the late John and Eva Morgan Brady on March 13, 1914, in Rowan County. He married Edith Smith in 1937 in Winston-Salem. She preceded him in death in 1982. He retired from Cannon Mills with over 30 years of service. Along with his wife and parents, two sisters also preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, George W. Brady and his wife Marion of Davidson County and William G. Brady and his wife Betty of Kernersville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, C.L. "Doc" Brady of Rowan County and R.L. Brady of China Grove; and a sister, Janet Howell of Rowan County. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. J. Marion will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 214 Royal Oaks St., Thomasville, NC 27360.

COLLINS

GREENSBORO - Mr. C. Coy Collins, 68, of 51 Mansfield Circle died Dec. 30, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Collins was born in Stokes County to Rayon and Pearl Collins. He attended Appalachian State Teachers College and Guilford College. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Collins was a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Page Bible Class and the Methodist Men. He was a member of Crescent Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Greensboro Elks Lodge No. 602. Mr. Collins was a member of NC Glass Hall of Fame and retired from ACI and Binswanger Glass Co. Mr. Collins was the 1993 Jaycee Boss of the Year. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty S. Collins; a daughter, Amy Collins of Greensboro; a son, Tony Collins and wife Cheryl Collins of Greensboro; a grandson, Taylor Collins; his mother, Pearl Collins of Mount Airy; and a brother, Dwight Collins of Pilot Mountain. He was preceded in death by his father, Rayon Collins. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Jan. 1, 2002, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street. Memorial contributions may be made to EIP Scholarship Foundation, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27455; or Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27455.

CUNNINGHAM

YADKINVILLE - The Rev. Donald S. Cunningham, 67, entered the presence of the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. He was born Nov. 26, 1934, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Herman and Ruth Cunningham. Don married Neita Yates on Jan. 1, 1954. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, including tours in Europe and Vietnam and retired as master sergeant. Following his retirement from the military, he worked as a customer-service engineer for IBM for 15 years and twice received the distinguished IBM Means Service Award in recognition of his dedication to customer service. Don served as a deacon and Bible study teacher at two churches, Magna View Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Tenn., and Cypress Lake Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Fla. In 1994 he felt the call to ministry and pastored two churches in Ball Play, Tenn., Farrs Chapel Friends and Oak Grove Friends. Since 1999, Don has been the pastor for Harmony Grove Friends Church in Yadkinville. Don and Neita have four children, Don Cunningham Jr. of Edmonds, Wash., Cathy Cunningham Holte and her husband Steve of Greenback, Tenn., Catrina Cunningham Livesay and her husband Daniel of Maryville, Tenn., and Gretchen Cunningham Dawson and her husband David of Holly Springs; 11 grandchildren, Dan Cunningham, Matthew Cunningham, Laura Cunningham, Brent Holte and his wife Sarah, Travis Holte and his wife Kelly, Erin Holte Yearout and her husband Jimmy, Philip Holte, Rachel Livesay, Hannah Livesay, Sarah Dawson and Andrew Dawson; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Holte and Amber Holte. Don is also survived by two brothers, Junior Cunningham of Melbourne, Fla., and Glenn Cunningham of Knoxville, Tenn. The family will receive friends at Harmony Grove Friends Church in Yadkinville on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at 10 a.m. His funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. and be led by pastors Robin Dixon, Harold Salmons and Lee Lane. Don will be buried in Tennessee. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Harmony Grove Friends Church, c/o Paulette Wright, 1016 Abbott St., Yadkinville, NC 27055. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.
