DUFF

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth Ruffo Duff, 94, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Sept. 2, 1907, in Middletown, Conn. Surviving are her two sons, Donaldson A. Duff of Thurmond and Alan P. Duff, of Newburgh, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Her funeral arrangements are incomplete with Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home in Newburgh, N.Y. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family locally.

FORREST

WESTFIELD - Mr. James Wilbur Forrest, 91, of 1182 Forrest Road, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. He was born Feb. 15, 1910, in Stokes County to Joseph Reid and Susan Fannie Dodd Forrest. Mr. Forrest was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a retired farmer and a member of Francisco Presbyterian Church. He is survived by a sister, Alma Forrest Harding of Westfield; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Forrest was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillie Forrest Turner, Jessie Forrest Smith, Inez Forrest Beasley, Edith Forrest Holt and Nina Forest Ray; and six brothers, Eugene Forrest, Samuel Forrest, Roy Forrest, Reid Forrest, Glenn Forrest and Clyde Forrest. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Asbury Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Charles Howell. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. Mr. Forrest will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral services. The Forrest family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

HARRISON

KERNERSVILLE - Ms. Elizabeth Murrella Harrison, 69, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 3, 1932, in Roanoke, Va., to Frank Harrison Sr. and Margarite Harrison. Survivors include three sons, Ottoway Harrison Jr. and wife Eppie of Baltimore, Md., Robert Rowdy Harrison and wife Linda of Winston-Salem and Frank Thomas Harrison of Kernersville; six grandchildren, Robert Harrison Jr., Joshua Harrison, and Billy Bob Harrison of Winston-Salem and Liza Harrison, Ruth London Harrison and Ottoway Harrison III of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Frank Harrison Jr. and wife Donna of Walkertown; a half sister, Mary Frances Harrison and husband Ezzie of Raleigh; and two nephews, Frankie Harrison and Johnny Harrison of Walkertown. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Oaklawn cemetery in Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105; or Woodland Baptist Church, 3665 Patterson Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

HOWARD

CLEMMONS - Mr. Samuel Lee Howard, 85, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Davie County. Mr. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bessent Howard; and his parents, Joseph Henry and Martha Allen Howard. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church and was retired from Hanes Hosiery Co. He played baseball for the Hanes Hosiery baseball team. He is survived by two daughters, Eugenia Howard of Clemmons and Bonnie Howard Faulk of Laurinburg; two granddaughters, Karla Leigh Faulk of Holly Springs and Amanda Brooks Faulk of Laurinburg; a brother, Johnny Howard of Mocksville; and two sisters, Edna Allen of Yadkinville and Nina Barnes of Advance. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Ray Burke. Burial will follow at Clemmons Moravian Church Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clemmons Moravian Church Building Fund.

JONES

Mrs. Mary Louise "Lou" Jones, 82, of 4130 Aquadale Lane, died Sunday at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was born March 24, 1919, in Forsyth County to Albert E. and Naomi Deal Nifong. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church by Dr. Kenneth Carter. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. Mrs. Jones lived all of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Bible Class. She retired from Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. after 32 years of service. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by two brothers, Reece Nifong and Phillip Nifong and a sister, Kathryn Nifong Kestler. Survivors include her husband, Ira W. Jones, of the home; two children, Carolyn Woods and husband, Jeff, of Winston-Salem, Norman Jones and wife, Nancy, of Lexington; grandchildren, Sarah Woods of Cary, David Woods of Winston-Salem, Jason, Ben and Elizabeth Glover of Lexington; a sister, Grace Kimel, and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Nifong, both of Winston-Salem. The family request in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Goodchild Scholarship Fund of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

JONES

Baby Melissa Nicole Jones died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 4, 2001, in Forsyth County to Mark Anthony and Joan Ritchie Jones. She is survived by her parents of the home; a sister, Kristen Jones; two brothers, Corey Ritchie and Anthony Rae; maternal grandmother, Clara Ritchie; paternal grandmother, Kathrine Jones. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ardmore Baptist Church Chapel by Dr. Bill Ireland. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

LILLY

On Dec. 29, 2001, the Lord sent his angels to the bedside of his child, Alma Ula Lilly, and called her home to be with him. Ms. Lilly, formerly of 1801 Pleasant St., was born July 16, 1914, to the late Jim and Florence Baldwin Lilly in Troy. She later moved to Winston-Salem with her family where she attended the public schools. After 49.2 years of service, Ms. Lilly retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Early in life she joined Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the Sunday school, Elizabeth Missionary Group and a devoted member of the ladies usher board. In the community, she was a member of the Friendly Neighborhood Flower Club. Ms. Lilly loved her church and derived much joy from being in various church services. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Julia Blaylock of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Paula (Otis) Belton of Walkertown, Gary Blaylock of Hickory and LaVern (Gerry) Hairston of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the home of her daughter, 3013 Airport Road, at noon Wednesday. LINVILLE

KERNERSVILLE - Miss Rubye May Linville, 95, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Bradford Village West following a five-year period of declining health. Miss Linville was born in Kernersville, the daughter of the late C.L. and Carrie Lairmore Linville. She is survived by a brother, J. Harmon Linville of Kernersville. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and was a retired civil-service employee having performed service in California, Florida and Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Kernersville High School and Oak Ridge Institute and attended Salem College. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel is assisting the family.

LOGAN

Mrs. Callie Leah Lineberry Logan, 92, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at the Nursing Center of Oak Summit. Mrs. Logan was born Dec. 7, 1909, to Dot B. and Myrtle Sears Lineberry in Yadkin County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Rufus Logan, in 1995. She was a former member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in East Bend. A graveside service will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. J. Marion Rector at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002. The family will received friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. She is survived by three sons, Billy Ray Logan of Winston-Salem, Charles Frank Logan of Kernersville and Dallas Rufus Logan of Canton; a daughter, Callie "Kelly" Grubbs of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Frank Lineberry of Winston-Salem and Lawrence Lineberry and Everett Lineberry, both of East Bend; six grandchildren, Dallas Logan Jr., Christy Tatum, Michael Logan, Mitchell Logan, Sandy Setser and Tammi Poplin; and nine great-grandchildren.

REYNOLDS

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Edith Jane Brann Reynolds, 87, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Dec. 11, 1914, in Yadkin County to the late Tyra Arthur and Emma Melinda Craft Brann. Mrs. Reynolds was a graduate of East Bend High School. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church, where she served as a choir member, enjoyed working with the children as a children's leader and Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader; and enjoyed working with crafts and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Sidney Reynolds on Dec. 31, 1987; and two brothers, Wade Brann and Gray Brann. Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Barbara (Harrell) Todd of Yadkinville; her grandsons, Nathaniel G. Todd and Darren T. Todd, both of Yadkinville; a brother, T. Dallas Brann of Kernersville; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Enon Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Elmore and Dr. Ron Davis. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Neurology Department for Dementia, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or Enon Baptist Church, Old US 421 Highway, East Bend, NC 27018. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

STANLEY

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Billy Jack Stanley, 74, of Twinhill Drive, died Monday morning, Dec. 31, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Mr. Stanley was born March 27, 1927, in Surry County to Ernest and Lessie Harris Stanley. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Sparks Stanley of the home; a son, Billy Gray Stanley of Boomer; a daughter, Regina Ann Stanley Felts of North Wilkesboro; a brother, Harold Stanley of Concord; three sisters, Pauline Davis and Rumell Whitaker, both of Dobson and Freda White of Level Cross; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rick Tomlinson and the Rev. Larry Adams officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight.

STINSON

BOONVILLE - Mrs. Bessie Combs Stinson, 90, 4737 Highway 67, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. She was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Surry County to Luther and Bertie Cockerham Combs. Mrs. Stinson was a member of Charity Baptist Church and was a homemaker and loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Stinson was preceded in death by her husband, Gillus Varner Stinson Sr. in 1984. Surviving are a daughter, Aladene (Bobby) Norman of Boonville; a son, Varner (Sarah) Stinson Jr. of East Bend; a sister, Edith Steelman of Boonville; two sisters-in-law, Imogene Combs of Boonville and Sarah "Click" Combs of Elkin; five grandchildren, Bryan (Cheryl) Stinson of King, Neal (Amy) Stinson of East Bend, April (Don) Johnson of Pfafftown and Greg (Dawn) Norman and Lorne Norman, both of Boonville; nine great-grandchildren; a great-stepgrandson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Charity Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Driver and the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. Memorials may be made to the Charity Baptist Church Building Fund, 1500 Charity Baptist Church Road, Boonville, NC 27011. ANDERSON

WILKESBORO - Mr. Sherman Taft Anderson, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Villages of Wilkes Skilled Care. Mr. Anderson was born Dec. 14, 1908, in Wilkes County to Harrison M. and Caroline Love Anderson. He was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church, was a charter member of the Wilkes Civitan Club, was a member of Masonic Liberty Lodge No. 45, was a self-employed electrical and plumbing contractor and had taught at the Wilkes Vocational Center. Surviv-ing are three sisters, Christine Parker of Wilkesboro, and Lora Shore and Vecie Dancy, both of North Wilkesboro. Funeral ser-vices will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chris Fitzgerald and the Rev. Chuck Byers officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the Heritage Room of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday before the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilkesboro United Methodist Church, 309 W. Main St., Wilkes-boro, NC 28697; Hospice of Wilkes, 1907 W. BULLINS

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Nancy Jane Page Bullins, 63, went home Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002. She was born in Guilford County to the late William Thomas and Elsie Lee Hicks Page. She was employed by Western Electric. Nancy was a faithful, active member of Meadows Baptist Church. She was a loving devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who was a special blessing in their lives and an inspiration to all who knew her. Preceding her in death was her brother, Tommy Page. Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Davis Bullins of the home; her daughter, Sherry B. Slate and husband Keith of Walnut Cove; her granddaugh-ter, Christin Slate; and her step-granddaughter, Savannah Slate. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Meadows Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Randy Wall, the Rev. Chester Montgomery and the Rev. Richard Thomas will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016.

BURNS

HOUSTON, Texas - Mrs. Marie Strange Burns, 88, died at her home in Houston. She was born March 13, 1913, in Winston-Salem to Minnie Strange and Richard Strange. She attended Depot Street School, Columbia Heights School and graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College in 1936. She received her master of arts degree from Columbia University in New York, N.Y. For 12 years, she taught at Kimberly Park Elementary School. In the community, she was active in the Winston-Salem Teachers College Alumna Association, YWCA and Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. She was crowned Miss Alumna in 1949. She was married to Mr. James Burns and later moved to Houston, Texas, where she was engaged in community, civic and political affairs and established her own real-estate business. She taught as a homebound teacher in the Houston school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Burns; her mother and father; a brother, Richard Strange; and five sisters, Creola Foote, Ethel Lee Harris, Minnie Strange, Esther Strange and Bernadine Strange Hall. She is survived by a sister, Vera Harr of Los Angeles, Calif.; three nieces, Clarice Foote Levister, Barbara Harr Taylor and Veronica Harr; two nephews, Sidney Harr and Richard Harr; and a devoted niece, Mrs. Ethel Ruth Anderson of Winston-Salem. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at noon at the fun-eral home, with the Rev. Verlon O. Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. (Brown)

Mr. Leon Jerome "Wag" Carruthers, 53, of 274 Weisner St. passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Born June 14, 1948, he was a native of this city, a graduate of Atkins High School and was a retired employee of Stroh Brewery Co., with 23 years of service. He is survived by five daughters, Tonya (Dereck) Caldwell of Charlotte, Leola (the Rev. Wayman) Monroe Jr. of Rural Hall and Cynthia (Donavan) Clark and Pamela McCellan, both of Winston-Salem ,and Taleona (Kelvin) Mayfield of Kernersville; 13 grandchildren; two stepchildren, Tasha Smith and Twanna Carruthers, both of Winston-Salem; a niece, Tom-asina Lentz of Michigan; two nephews, Quinton Drummond and Donald-Ray Lineberger, both of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Renee Jackson of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, East Location, where Pastor Sheldon McCarter will officiate. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the church. The family will assemble at the church. The remains may be viewed from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services (896-0061).

DIETZ

Mr. Robert William Dietz passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001. He was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Farmingdale, N.Y. His loving wife of 55 years, Jeanne Davis Dietz, preceded him in death. He is the father of Robert William Deitz Jr. of Columbia, S.C., and George Luther Dietz of Kent, Ohio. He is survived by sons; daughters-in-law Linda and Julie; and grandchildren Amy, Rebecca, Kathryn, Eric, Michael and Meghan. He was an active member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and a volunteer at Crisis Control Ministry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church Chapel.
