SPARTA - Mr. Homer William Reeves, 89, of 1087 Tayson Road died Monday evening, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Laurine and Eldon Edwards and Jean Osborne, all of Sparta, and Pat and Doug Taylor of Lewisville; two sons, Dennis Reeves of Bethlehem and Eddie Reeves of Boonville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Cleo and Faye Reeves of Sparta and Franklin Dale and Ellen Reeves of Centerville, Tenn.; three sisters: Clydie Adams of Maysville, Marie Norris of Darlington, Md., and Ann Rosser of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Reeves family cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and other times at the home of Jean Osborne, 246 Westview Drive, Sparta. Flowers are appreciated, or memorials may be made to the Alleghany Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 416, Sparta, NC 28675; or the Reeves Family cemetery Fund, c/o Ray V. SHUMATE

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Era Johnson Shumate, 86, the wife of Lawrence W. Shumate, of Hilltop Acres Street died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fairplains Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Hackworth officiat-ing. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Shumate was born May 6, 1915, in Wilkes County to Tyre Gilmore and China Holbrook Johnson. She was a member of Fairplains Baptist Church and taught the Gleaners Sunday-school class for 25 years. Mrs. Shumate was retired from Holly Farms. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Iva and Bob Stowe of Wadesboro; a foster sister, Frances Holbrook of Hays; and a grandchild, Rachel Stowe of Wadesboro. The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkes-boro from 6 to 8 Thursday night. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairplains Baptist Church 141, Fairplains Church St., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

SMITH

NEW YORK - Mrs. Edna E. Smith, 90, of 71 W. 112th St., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2001. She was born June 25, 1911, in North Carolina to Victoria and Edward Turner. At an early age, Edna joined her grandfather's church, the Piney Grove AME Church, and was presently a member of the Rush Temple AME Zion Church in Jamaica, N.Y. She was employed in administrative work until she retired. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James; her brothers, Clarence, Charles, Norris, Bruce and Thomas; a sister, Marie; and a granddaugh-ter, Aurielle. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Alford Smith; a son, Alfred and wife Adrian; three daughters, Victoria, Joyce Smith and Helen Davis; and other relatives and friends. She is locally survived by two cousins, Mrs. Mary Foote and Mrs. Earline Leach, both of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at the Rocky Creek AME Zion Church, Har-mony, with the Rev. McCombs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. FERN PARK, Fla. - Mr. William "Bill" N. Snead Jr., 80, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday. Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SNOW

RANDLEMAN - Mr. Allan L. Snow, 69, of 5009 Old Greensboro Road died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at New Salem United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David McCauley. Mr. Snow, a native of Cornwall, Ontario, was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church in Randleman and was a retired supervisor with Stroh Brewing, Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Sherrie Padgett. Surviving are his wife, Ann L. Snow of the home; a daughter and her husband, Anne-Marie and Norman Wiginton of Winston-Salem; a son and his wife, Michael and Virginia Snow of King; a stepson and his wife, Richard and Toni VanSickle of Lewisville; grandchildren Christo-pher VanSickle, Patrick Wiginton, Stephen Padgett and Brandon Padgett; sisters Shirley Snow, Mary Runions and Lyndith Henry; and brother Franklin Snow, all of Ontario, Canada. Visitation will follow the service Friday in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-009.

SPIVEY

RALEIGH - Mrs. Martha Burke Spivey, 71, died peacefully surrounded by her family Dec. 20, 2001, at the Stewart Health Center of the Springmoor Re-tirement Com-munity in Raleigh. Mrs. Spivey, a loving wife, caring mother, thoughtful friend and devoted educator, had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for the past few years. She was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Winston-Salem and lived there most of her life. After graduating in the class of 1946 from Reynolds High School, she went to the Women's College in Greensboro (now UNCG), where she earned her bachelor's degree in physical education in 1950. She taught at Thomas Dale High School in Richmond, where she met and later married John Spivey. In 1956, they moved back to Winston-Salem, where she worked at the YWCA, teaching children to swim and directing the teen recreation programs. As an active member of Centenary Methodist Church, she taught in the children's Sunday school. In 1968, she joined the staff at the Summit School as a PE and science teacher. In 1974, she became head of the middle school at Summit. She retired in 1992 and shortly thereafter, fulfilled a lifelong dream when she moved to her home at Holden Beach. She spent the next several years volunteering, entertaining, travel-ing and enjoying her time divided between the beach and a condominium in Clemmons. Throughout her illness, she remained true to herself, always smiling and helping others, positive and caring, sweet and gentle. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John; a son, John Jr.; and a grandson, John, all of Raleigh; her daughter, Laura Brothers and her husband, Bill; and her grand-daughters, Maddie and Sam, all of Arlington, Va.; her sister, Mrs. Joseph W. May of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem. An inurnment service will begin at 11:30 at the church's colum-barium. The memorial service will be held in the main sanctuary at noon. Family and friends are invited to gather in the church auditorium afterward to celebrate her life. The family asks that you bring any photos of Martha and add them to albums that will be assembled at that reception. These albums will serve as a lasting memento of her wonderful adventures with her many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund which will be used for recreational programs for underprivileged children. Donations may be sent to the Martha Spivey Memorial Children's Fund, c/o Bob Alger Edward Jones Investments Inc., 1210 Ridge Road Raleigh, NC 27607. Arrangements are being made by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh.

LEXINGTON - I. Estelle Thom-ason, 79, died Monday at High Point Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thurs-day at Second Reformed United Church of Christ. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TILLEY

KING - Mrs. Harriett Virginia Overby Tilley, 88, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor in Winston-Salem. She was born July 14, 1913, in Stokes County to John W. and Alpha Clark Overby. Mrs. Tilley was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy James and husband David of Winston-Salem and Sophia White and husband T.L. of Rural Hall; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon Thompson Tilley and wife Janice of King; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Clay Boy the dog. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tilley was preceded in death by her husband, Zebadee Roscoe Tilley; two sisters, Gladys Tilley and Lottie Dunkley; and a brother, Lester Overby. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Rodgers and the Rev. Myers Tilley. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Thursday evening, Jan. 3, 2002, from 6:30 to 8:30. Special thanks to all the staff at Silas Creek Manor for all the love, care and kindness shown to our loving mother. The Tilley family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

TURNER

HARMONY - Mr. John Edgar Turner, 92, formerly of 377 Kimmon Road, died Wednesday at Davis Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 30, 1909, in Wilkes County, he was a son of the late Wiley Turner and Julia Hayes Turner. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and at the time of his death was the oldest surviving member of New Hope Baptist Church. His wife, the former Stella Lou Templeton, preceded him in death Feb. 2, 1979. Survivors include son Edmund Turner and wife Mary Frances of Statesville; daughter Mrs. Margie Turner Beck and husband David Beck Jr. of States-ville; five grandchildren, Beverly Snook, Penny Fox, Kay Beck, Joseph Beck and Mark Beck; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Carl Marvin and Roy and Vernon Turner, all of Hamptonville; and a sister, Mrs. Ethel T. Gilleland of Conover. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Thur-mond, Frank and Commie Turner. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Andrews and the Rev. Rodney Blake officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony. Condolences may be sent by e-mail to the family at www.legacy.com. WATSON

MABLETON, Ga. - Mr. Bennis Worth Watson, 67, of Mableton died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Ashe County to Grady Watson Sr. and Rhoda Vetra Blackburn Watson. Mr. Watson is survived by four sons, Gerald Watson of Advance, Benny Watson of Siloam and Lewis Watson and Keith Watson, both of Winston-Salem; six grandchil-dren; three stepgrandchildren; his mother, Vetra Watson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Melba Owens of Winston-Salem; and three brothers, Kenneth Watson of Clemmons, Grady Watson Jr. of Advance and Donald Watson. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Eller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Mr. Watson will lie in state at the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. before the service. LUMBERTON - Mrs. Evelyn Genevieve Williams Wells, 84, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Monday at Woodhaven Nursing Center. The funeral will be Thursday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

WEST

Mr. David Allen West, 81, of 809 Woodcrest Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 6, 1920, in Winston-Salem to William Zebedee and Mary Eleanor VanHoy West. Mr. West was educated in Winston-Salem public school system, and lived all his life in Winston-Salem. He was secretary/ treasurer of Piedmont Leaf Tobacco, retiring in 1981. He was first married to Margaret Elizabeth Johnson on July 12, 1942, who preceded him in death. Mr. West served in World War II with the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged as a master sergeant serving in Okinawa. He was a member Fairview Moravian Church. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Evelyn Whitney West; a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Russell and husband Lester of Lewisville; a son, Gerald Allen West of Clemmons; two stepdaughters, Ann Marcus and Susan Crump; a grandson, Don Russell of Yadkinville; three stepgrandchil-dren, Elizabeth Marcus, Rives Crump and the Rev. David Allen Marcus Jr.; a sister, Virginia Poe of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Fairview Moravian Church by the Rev. Riddick Weber, the Rev. Herbert Weber the and Rev. David A. Marcus Jr. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Thursday evening at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Mr. Powell C. William Jr., 86, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in St. Louis. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain is in charge of the arrangements.

ALDRIDGE

YANCEYVILLE - Mr. James Preston Aldridge Sr., 89, a resident of Twin Lakes Retirement Center's The Orchard health-care building, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002. He was born June 5, 1912, in Caswell County. He was the son of William Preston Aldridge and Annie Gunn Aldridge, both deceased, and the husband of the late Luetta Carroll Aldridge. He graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1929. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Yanceyville, and also attended First United Methodist Church of Elon College since 1997. He resided at Twin Lakes Retirement Community from 1990 until his death. Mr. Aldridge was general manager of Cole Chevrolet in Yanceyville until 1957 and was service manager at Graham Motors Chevrolet in Graham from 1957 through 1964. From 1965 to 1982, he was shop foreman at Atwater Ford in Burlington and service represent-ative at County Ford in Graham until he retired in 1984. Survivors include two daughters, Anne A. Telford and husband Jacque of Durham and Peggy L. Aldridge of Burlington; two sons, James Preston Aldridge Jr. and wife Marcia of Macon, Ga., and Carroll Lee Aldridge of Kernersville; a brother, Samuel Eugene Aldridge of Yanceyville; four grandchildren, Alice B. Dugan and husband David of Durham, Lawrence H. Best of Morrisville, Elizabeth A. Motto and husband Michael of Stanley and Thomas James Preston Aldridge and wife Rita, of Mooresville; and two great-grandsons, Dane Christopher Dugan and Addison James Dugan, both of Durham. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ida Lee Aldridge, and three brothers, Ralph Mims Aldridge, Bernard Pritchard Aldridge and William Bowe Aldridge. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Prospect United Methodist Church on N.C. 158 W., Yancey-ville, by the Rev. Bryan Faggart. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church before the service. In lieu of flowers, friends should feel free to donate to a charity of choice, or to the Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burling-ton, NC 27216. HIGH POINT - Mrs. Maeola Ellis Berrier, 72, the wife of the late Early Edward Berrier, died Tuesday at High Point Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Community Evangelical Methodist Church, Thomasville. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BROWN

Mrs. Ila S. Bowen Brown, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at The Oaks At Forsyth. She was born May 30, 1912, to Wyatt W. and Hessie Bennett Southern in Stokes County. She was member of Becks Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnie Roscoe Brown; her parents; and a sister, Viola S. Cromer. She is survived by two sons, Grady O. Bowen (Yoskiko) of Winston-Salem and Rupert W. Bowen (Cynthia) of Allisonia, Va.; three grandchildren, Gary Bowen, Suzanne Bowen and Scott Bowen (Caroline); a great-grandchild, Leslie Bowen; three sisters, Nancy Opal Dobbins of Walnut Cove and Lucille Throckmorton and Olene S. Booth, both of Winston-Salem; a brother, Dennis O. Southern of Clemmons; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Southern of Clemmons. She had several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Becks Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Wonders and Dr. Karl R. Minor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. BURRELL

Mr. Hairston Burrell Jr., 76, known to family and friends as "Red," of 269 Elm Drive, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Hartsville, S.C., Dec. 18, 1925, to the late Hairston Burrell Sr. and Rosa Beasley Burrell. He was preceded in passing by a brother, Alexander Burrell; and a sister, Queen Burrell Reid. He was a former member of the New Bethel Baptist Church and later became a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church under the ministry of Dr. Kelly O.P. Goodwin. He was active with the Saint John's Layman's League at Mount Zion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. "Red" was the proprietor of Exxon Service Station at Highway 311 and Bowen Boulevard during the 1970s. He retired from Sun Chemical Co. after more than 20 years of service. He leaves to cherish his homegoing a devoted wife, Carolyn G. Burrell; two daughters, Tanya McDougal and Francheria Burrell; a son, Michael McDougal; a grandson, Sean McDougal; 12 sisters-in-law and 11 brothers-in-law, Daisy F. Burkins of Charlotte, Sallie Inman (Dallas) and Lillie Giles of Brooklyn, N.Y., Minnie G. Long (Douglas) and Camria Heights, all of Queens, N.Y., Mattie G. Farrell (John) of Warsaw, Va., Evelyn Hudnall (Bennett) of Heathsville, Va., Bertha Giles of Sharon, S.C., Anita G. Sawyers (Nathaniel) of Virginia Beach, Va., Irene G. Durham (Roy) of Winston-Salem, Lester Giles (Maggie) and Glenn H. Giles (Emma), all of Sharon, S.C., the Rev. Dr. F.R. Giles (Gloria) of Taylors, S.C. and Fred Giles of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family. Services for Mr. Burrell will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Church Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
