WALKER

Mr. Curtis Lonnie Walker, 92, of the Ogburn Station Community, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Springwood Care. He was a native of Forsyth County and was married for 54 years to Beulah Joyner Walker, who preceded him in death. He was born Dec. 12, 1909, to William Winfield and Laura Elizabeth Dillon Walker, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Lora Walker and Hazel Copeland; and two brothers, Paul Walker and Chester Walker. Mr. Walker was the oldest member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church on Old Walkertown Road and a charter member of the Mineral Springs Fire Department. He was a charter member of North Forsyth Civic Club, Teamsters Local No. 391 and the Teamsters Retiree Club. Surviving are two sons, Lonnie Cecil Walker and wife, Joyce, of Elon College and Vernon Coy Walker and wife, Kay, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Randy Walker, Kevin Walker, Robin Blackburn, Kim Walker, Dare Luck and Darin Walker; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mignon James and Eloise Davis, both of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Richard Walker of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Patrick Hamrick and the Rev. Dewey Griffin. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home and other times at 5029 Haystack Hill Road. Memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4700 Old Walkertown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

NEW BERN - Mr. Oscar Fred Womack, 90, died Monday. A graveside service will be held in Winston-Salem. Pollock-Best Funerals & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

ALEXANDER

COOLEEMEE - Mrs. Margaret Ijames Alexander, 88, of Center Street died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Alexander was born Aug. 2, 1913, in Cooleemee to the late Jerry and Pearl Koontz Ijames. She was a member of Cooleemee Episcopal Church. She was employed with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro housing department and was affiliated with the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Roy F. Alexander Sr., to whom she was married for 61 years; a son, Roy F. Alexander Jr. and wife Brenda of Hillsborough; grandsons Charles Edward Alexander, and Christopher Scott and wife Crystal; and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Taylor. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Center United Methodist Church cemetery, U.S. Highway 64 W., Mocksville with the Rev. Perry Bradshaw officiating. The family will receive friends after the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Cooleemee United Methodist Church, c/o Richard Smith, P.O. ANDERSON

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Mr. Arthur Ernest Anderson, 78, died Jan. 5, 2002, under the loving care of his wife, Margaret, and friend, Gwendolyn, in Spring Hill and Booth Bay Harbor, Maine. He was retired from the research-and-development department of Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. His survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Spring Hill; two sons, Ernest Anderson of Houston, Maine, and Edward Anderson of Pittsburgh; three daughters, Linda Lloyd of Bonita Springs, Fla., Eileen Shonk of Wooster, Ohio, and Elaine Houser of Mocksville; a brother, Robert Anderson of Ellington, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Merritt Funeral Home, Spring Hill Chapel.

BAITY

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Lonnie Albert Baity Sr., 60, of Brookcrest Circle passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Friendly Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy McGlamery and the Rev. Kent Eller officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Baity was born Sept. 1, 1941, in Wilkes County to Sybel Brooks Baity Johnson and Robert Lonnie Baity. He was employed by Tyson Foods for 37 years and was a member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Janice Minton Baity of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Brian (Sharon) Weatherman of Millers Creek; a son, Lonnie (Debbie) Baity Jr. of Wilkesboro; four sisters, Pauline Shew of North Wilkesboro, Mable Cheek of Winston-Salem, Linda Church of Millers Creek and Betty Perrell of Mocksville; three brothers, Robert L. Baity and Homer Johnson Jr., both of Wilkesboro, and Tony Johnson of Harrisonburg, Va.; and four grandchildren, Matthew Weatherman of Millers Creek and Kelcie, Kenley and Kerrie Baity of Wilkesboro. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro on Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Friendly Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 636, Millers Creek, NC 28651.

BERRIER

Mr. Paul Berrier, 76, a resident of 486 Old Thomasville Road, Winston-Salem, died Thursday morning at Thomasville Medical Center. Mr. Berrier was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Davidson County to Harvey Phillip and Elzie Pitts Berrier. He was a retired miller for Mobile Milling of Thomasville and was a charter member of Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Midway. He and his wife, the former Ruth Phillips had been married for more than 58 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ray and Everette; and an infant sister. Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruth, are a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Kearns and her husband, Larry of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Mrs. Maude Hartman, Mrs. Florence Warden and Mrs. Vi Nichols, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Clay and his wife, Odessa, Clyde and his wife, Sadie, John and his wife Kaye, all of Winston-Salem, and Dr. Floyd Berrier and his wife Ann of Huntersville; and two grandsons, Scott Kearns of New York and Chad Kearns of Wins-ton-Salem. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Forest United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Berry and the Rev. Wade Childers officiating. Burial will follow in Cannan United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Friday evening at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, N.C. 109 N., Wallburg. The family deeply appreciates the many acts of kindness extended to Mr. Berrier by the staff of third floor east at Thomasville Medical Center. MADISON - Mrs. Nannie Brown Boone died Tuesday at Brian Center in Eden. The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Good Will Baptist Church, Madison. Arrangements by Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

BROWDER

Mrs. Lucy Jones Browder, 88, the widow of B.R. Browder Sr., of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Vienna Village in Pfafftown. She was born to the late J.R. Jones and Sudie Grubbs Jones July 30, 1913, in Forsyth County. She was retired from Hanes Knitting and was a member of Loves United Methodist Church in Walkertown. A sister, Louise Hanks; a stepson, Leslie E. Browder; and numerous nieces and nephews survive her. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Gardens of Memory cemetery in Walkertown. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Mrs. Browder's niece, Mrs. Marilyn Martin, and her husband, Fred, will also receive friends at their home throughout the day. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. BROWN

Mrs. Ila S. Bowen Brown, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at The Oaks At Forsyth. She was born May 30, 1912, to Wyatt W. and Hessie Bennett Southern in Stokes County. She was member of Becks Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnie Roscoe Brown; her parents; and a sister, Viola S. Cromer. She is survived by two sons, Grady O. Bowen (Yoskiko) of Winston-Salem and Rupert W. Bowen (Cynthia) of Allisonia, Va.; three grandchildren, Gary Bowen, Suzanne Bowen and Scott Bowen (Caroline); a great-grandchild, Leslie Bowen; three sisters, Nancy Opal Dobbins of Walnut Cove and Lucille Throckmorton and Olene S. Booth, both of Winston-Salem; a brother, Dennis O. Southern of Clemmons; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Southern of Clemmons. She had several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Becks Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Wonders and Dr. Karl R. Minor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Becks Baptist Church Quilting Ministry, 5505 Becks Baptist Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

DAVIS

SYLVA - Mr. Joseph "Joe" Davis of Joe Davis Road died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health. A native of Buncombe County, he lived in Jackson County since 1941. He retired from Mead Corp. and was the son of the late Stover and Rixie Reeves Davis. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elba Ashe Davis; two sisters; and five brothers. Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Cabe and her husband, L.C. of Sylva, Susan Winchester and her husband, Leonard of Bryson City and Jo Ann Moore of Birdsboro, Pa.; a son, Hugh Davis and his wife, Nell of Sylva; four sisters, Stovia Pitts of Franklin, Lena Kulanko and Emily Shaver, both of Winston-Salem, and Lottie Pruett of Asheville; a brother, Ralph Davis of Sylva; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church, of which he attended, with the Rev. Mike Moore and the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends Thursday night at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the services. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 245, Sylva, NC 28779.

EDMONDS

LITTLETON - Mr. Percy Lee Edmonds Jr., 47, died Jan. 1, 2002. He was born Nov. 29, 1954, to Percy Lee and Dorothy Fowler Edmonds in Winston-Salem. Mr. Edmonds spent his childhood years in Winston-Salem and Littleton. After finishing high school, he began his Army career, and after Army retirement, he lived and worked in Germany and North Carolina. Survivors include his wife, Selma M. Edmonds; two daughters, Romona of Germany and Melanie (Kenneth) Springs of Winston-Salem; a son, Percy III of Marine Corps, Yorktown, Va.; his parents; a sister, Dolah Edmonds of Littleton; two grandchildren, Latasha and Kenneth Jr.; and several relatives and numerous friends. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Littleton. Many thanks to friends and thoughtful expressions of sympathy. Robinson Funeral Home, Littleton, is in charge of arrangements.

ENSLEY

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Shoaf Ensley, 78, the wife of the late Harold Eugene Ensley, died Tuesday at Thomasville Medical Center. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Zion United Church of Christ cemetery. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, is in charge of arrangements.

GRAVELY

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Joseph Franklin Gravely Sr., 73, the widower of Alpha D'Amico Gravely, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Gravely was born July 22, 1928, in Surry County to the late Albert and Bertha Anna Jones Gravely. He was a retired manager from Kroger Co. and a member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ in Thomasville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict, and was a 50-year member of Granite Masonic Lodge No. 322 AF&AM. Survivors include a son, Joseph Franklin Gravely Jr. of Texas; a sister, Peggy Ann Thomas of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; and three aunts, Mae Jones Joyce and Valria Bryant, both of Mount Airy, and Estelle Gates of Wytheville, Va. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Gravely was preceded in death by a brother, James Hoyle Gravely. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Jamie Fonville. Burial will be in Oakdale cemetery, with full Masonic rites conducted by Granite Masonic Lodge No. 322 AF&AM. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday night at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

GRIMES

THOMASVILLE - Mr. Therrell James Grimes, 73, a resident of 1160 Johnsontown Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his residence. He was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Davidson County, the son of Cromer Grimes and Chappell James Grimes. He had been a resident of this area the greater part of his life. He was a graduate of Pilot High School and attended Ashmore Business College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict, serving aboard the USS Missouri. He was employed by Thomason Chevrolet for 13 years and by the city of Thomasville Tax Department for 12 years, retiring Feb. 23, 1979. He was a charter member of Pilot Fire Department and was a former fire chief for the department and a former member of the board of directors. He helped organize the National Rural Water Association and was a former president of the board of directors of Davidson Water Inc. in Welcome. He delivered meals for Meals on Wheels of Thomasville and volunteered in many capacities in other organizations. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a talented person in "fixing things." He was an active member in Calvary United Church of Christ, the Marie Alexander Sunday-school class, president of the Memorial Association of Calvary, and served on various other church committees. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cromer Grimes and Chappell James Grimes Murphy; and a daughter, Robin Elizabeth Grimes who died Nov. 23, 1987. He was married to Peggy Clinard on Dec. 24, 1950, who survives at the home. Also surviving is a son, James Clinard Grimes of Kanoy Road, Thomasville; a granddaughter, Amber Leigh Grimes of Asheboro; and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Grimes Hill and John Hill of Lexington. A memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Church of Christ cemetery, with the Rev. Dale Sowers and the Rev. Harold Holste officiating. The family will be at the residence, 1160 Johnsontown Road. The family requests that memorials be made to the Pilot Fire Department Burned Victims, P.O. Box 1889, Thomasville, NC 27360. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAYMORE

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. James Wesley Haymore, 65, died Thursday at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Arrangements are incomplete with Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

JENKINS

Mr. Matthew Howard Jenkins, 35, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home. Mr. Jenkins was born July 29, 1966, in Anacortes, Wash., to the late Denver Kenneth Jenkins Jr. and Doris Carter Jenkins. He graduated from Parkland High School and then attended UNC Greensboro for three years. Mr. Jenkins was an avid writer and loved to travel. He volunteered many hours of his time to various groups and organizations. Preceding him in death are his parents and a nephew, Dalton Jenkins. He is survived by a sister, Jennifer Stout (Mitchell) of Winston-Salem; a brother, Denver Jenkins III of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jeff Jenkins (Sandra) of Kernersville; a sister, Adrianna "A.C." Church (Paul) of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Sam Jenkins (Angie) of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six nieces; two nephews; a great-niece; a host of relatives; and a special friend, Jeff. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Garness Brooks officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216 Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216; or the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LAWSON

Mr. Roger Deneene Lawson, 37, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 19, 1964, in Panama City, Fla. He worked as a construction coordinator for the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem. He is survived by his mother, Elaine Young Taylor, and stepfather, Leon G. Taylor; three sons, Aaron Deneene Lawson, Nicholas Kelley Lawson and Nathan Lawson Taylor; a brother, Richard S. Lawson Jr. and wife Michelle and their daughter Shelley; a sister, Heather L. Taylor; his grandmother, Kitty Spera; and his father, Richard S. Lawson Sr. of Columbia, S.C. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Minister Evelyn Dean officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

MARTIN

DOBSON - Mr. Charles Everett Martin Jr., 74, of 101 Pearl Lane died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1927, in Surry County to Charles Everette Sr. and America Lucinda Doss Martin. Mr. Martin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army for six years, a retired truck driver, a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a member of Copeland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Woods Martin, of the home; five daughters, Debbie Jane Taylor of Mount Airy, Jeanie Diane Rocco of Clemmons, Carolyn Lynn Atkins of Greensboro, Sandra Dee Hammond of Siloam and Sendee Casstevens of Boonville; three sons, Larry Dale Martin of Mount Airy, Willie Roy Martin of Dobson and Bruce Wayne Martin of Dobson; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Odessa Gillispie of Dobson and Mary Ann Fisher of Florida; and three brothers, Charles S. Martin of Ohio, John O. Martin of Wilmington and Roy Lee Martin of Dobson. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a sister, Lydie Mae Martin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Copeland Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Junior Corn and the Rev. Randy Parrish. Interment will follow in the Copeland Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post No. 1115, Hillsville, Va. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002. The Martin family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.
