MOSER

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Ellen Garner Moser, 94, formerly of 3467 Old Greensboro Road, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Bradford Village-East, Kerners-ville. She was born Dec. 12, 1907, in Randolph County, a daughter and one of six children of Willie and Hattie Pickett Garner. She was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a faithful nursery worker for 28 years. Mrs. Moser retired from Hanes Knitwear with 41 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Weaver Moser. Surviving are two grandchildren, Mike Smith and his wife, Libby of Walkertown and Debbie Hester and her husband, Brad of Advance; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Smith, Lane Smith, Ryan Hester and Jacob Hester. Also surviving are a nephew, Wade Owens and his wife, Ruby of Lexington; special friends Louise and Hade Watson of Walkertown; and many other church friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Roberson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville.

NOWLIN

MOUNT AIRY - Ms. Betty Royal Nowlin, 66, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County after a brief illness. Ms. Nowlin was born Dec. 4, 1935, in Wilkes County to the late Oscar H. and Lillian Dockery Royal. She was a loving mother and grandmother and worked for 31 years at Cross Creek Apparel. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Selena and Roger Berrier of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Justin Berrier, also of Winston-Salem; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Hubert M. and Betty Royal of Pfafftown and James M. and Pearl Royal of Fredericksburg, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Bud Spencer. In addition to her parents, Ms. Nowlin was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy R. Magee. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Skyline Memory Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Alton Bledsoe. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday night at Moody Funeral Home.

RIGGS

SANDY RIDGE - Mr. Edward Charles Riggs, 96, of 1532 Ray Wilson Road died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Delta United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Riggs will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. Saturday until time of the service. Mr. Riggs was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, a member of Delta United Methodist Church and a retired farmer. He was a hard working man who loved his family and church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Griffin Riggs; parents George and Nannie Hundley Riggs; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Gladys Dodson and husband Edsel and Joy McMillian; and a brother, Curtis Riggs, all of Sandy Ridge; a sister, Mozelle Martin of Raleigh; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at the home of Gladys and Edsel Dodson, 1552 Ray Wilson Road, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046. Memorials may be made to Delta United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Thomas Hill, 2168 Beasley School Road, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046.

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Donald G. Rohrer died Dec. 26, 2001. A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

SCHRYVER

GREENSBORO - Mae Anne Schryver, 68, died at Moses Cone Hospital. A funeral will be held Saturday in Troy, Mich. Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret Louise Neal Spence, 89, formerly of 2401 N. Patterson Ave., went home to "The Bosom of Abraham" from Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002. She was born Nov. 27, 1912, on 71/2 Street to the late Pinkney and Angie Davis Neal. She attended the Depot Street, Columbia Heights and 14th Street schools. Mrs. Spence was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and co-owner of Spence's Place at 721 Patterson Ave. for more than 37 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 47 years, Avorisse Spence; a son, Prince Neal; sisters Eva Parham, Loise Alexander and Willie Mae Grier; and brothers Edward Neal Sr. and Harvey Powers. She was a member of First Baptist Church and, in the community, Kimberly Park Garden Club. Mrs. Spence is survived by her loving son, Michael O'Hara Spence of Tillery; grandchildren Carmen Michelle Smith, Patrick Bernard (Julianna) Smith and Angelina Marie Carone; special friends, Marthola Payne, Selena Nichols, Bertha Walker, Ida Ruth Staplefoote, Edna Revels and Evalena Clayborn, all of Winston-Salem; grandnephew Mr. Curly Neal of Reidsville; grandniece Ms. Pam Grier of Hollywood, Calif.; many other relatives; and all her friends past and present of the Women's Progressive Club of First Baptist Church-Highland Avenue, and Kimberly Park Garden Club. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2002, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the family plot at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. WALKER

Mr. Curtis Lonnie Walker, 92, of the Ogburn Station Community, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Springwood Care. He was a native of Forsyth County and was married for 54 years to Beulah Joyner Walker, who preceded him in death. He was born Dec. 12, 1909, to William Winfield and Laura Elizabeth Dillon Walker, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Lora Walker and Hazel Copeland; and two brothers, Paul Walker and Chester Walker. Mr. Walker was the oldest member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church on Old Walkertown Road and a charter member of the Mineral Springs Fire Department. He was a charter member of North Forsyth Civic Club, Teamsters Local No. 391 and the Teamsters Retiree Club. Surviving are two sons, Lonnie Cecil Walker and wife, Joyce, of Elon College and Vernon Coy Walker and wife, Kay, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Randy Walker, Kevin Walker, Robin Blackburn, Kim Walker, Dare Luck and Darin Walker; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mignon James and Eloise Davis, both of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Richard Walker of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Patrick Hamrick and the Rev. Dewey Griffin. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home and other times at 5029 Haystack Hill Road. WALTON

Mr. David Walton Jr., 63, of 621 Burton St. passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Walton was born March 28, 1938, in Anderson County, S.C., a son of the late Betsy and David Walton. Mr. Walton was a retired employee of Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co. he leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Geneva Allen Walton; a daughter, Sandra Allen of Winston-Salem; a brother, David Haley of Anderson, S.C.; sisters Lillie Mae Gibert and husband James of Killen, Texas, and Jessie Brown Gibert of Winston-Salem; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; and a special friend, Mr. Walter Tatum. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. at Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memory Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Best officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Arrangements en-trusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

WILLIAMS

Ms. Felicia Lavern Williams, 29, of 2715 Chestnut Heights Road passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Born May 16, 1972, to Lessie Lee Williams and Harold Tyrone Woods, she was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. She was formerly employed at the M.C. Benton Convention Center Catering Service and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her children, James O. Williams, Cassandra M. Williams, Melvin O. Williams and De-Edric M. Williams, all of Winston-Salem; her dear mother, Lessie Lee Williams; and her father, Harold Tyrone Woods, both of Winston-Salem; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be noon Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. (Russell)

Mildred Lee Williams departed her life Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at her residence. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Miss Larnettra Williams; a granddaughter, Miss Tiffani Williams; three great-grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Trevia Goodwin and Mrs. Shirley (Martin) Sowells of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Mr. Bob (Lolenea) and Mr. Milton Williams of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home with Ruling Elder Wardlow Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.

AUSTIN

GLEN COVE, N.Y. - Mary Melinda White Austin passed away at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Glen Cove. She was the sister of Carrie White Wilkins of Winston-Salem. Funeral services are incomplete at this time. Survivors and other details will be released later. This has been a courtesy of Gilmore Funeral Home.

BEAUREGARD

Mr. Lawrence Edward Beauregard, 50, of 525-D Tussey St., passed away Jan. 10, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1951, to the late Lawrence and Dorothy Beauregard. He was a graduate of the local public schools of Davidson County. Mr. Beauregard was a member of Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Lawrence Beauregard. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Dorothy Beauregard; his fiancee, Carrie Leverett; a son, Kevin Lamar; and a brother, Keith Beauregard. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Moses Edwards Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the church. The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. to lie in state until the service hour. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

CARPENTER

CLEMMONS - Mr. Alvis Barbee Carpenter, 75, died Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born Jan. 16, 1926, in Helena, Ark., he spent his early years in Elaine, Ark., with his parents, James Robert and Jamie Barbee Carpenter. At the age of 14, he enrolled in the Tennessee military Institute in Sweetwater, where he completed his high-school education. He attended Ouachita Baptist University for one year before enlisting in the Army Air Forces, where he served during World War II. Upon his discharge, he enrolled in Baylor University, later transferring to the University of Denver, where he completed a bachelor's degree in business administration. He also studied at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., receiving a master of divinity degree in 1954 and a doctorate of ministry in 1977. During his seminary years, he served in several capacities on the staff of Deer Park Baptist Church. In 1955, he was called as pastor of Audubon Baptist Church of Louisville, where he served for 10 years. In 1965 he began a 15-year tenure as the pastor of First Baptist Church of Blytheville, Ark. After moving to North Carolina in 1980 to broaden his studies in clinical pastoral education and counseling, Dr. Carpenter served several churches as interim pastor. These included First Baptist churches of Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Advance and Mocksville, as well as the Com-munity Moravian Church of Welcome. He held membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. He served as a volunteer counselor for Contact of Winston-Salem and was associated with the Trinity Center on a part-time basis. In 1982, he opened the Clemmons Counsel-ing Center and served many people until his retirement in 1994. He and his wife were very active in ACME (Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment) and were a certified leader couple. His love for music led to his participation in the New Horizons Band (for senior citizens), where he played the clarinet. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, using his background and experience as pastor and counselor. His involvement everywhere mirrored the theme of his life, which was commitment to God and caring for people. Dr. Carpenter is survived by Florence Childress Carpenter, his wife of 44 years; a daughter, Elizabeth Carpenter Smith and husband John of Irving, Texas; a son, Daniel Carpenter and wife Patricia of Somerset, Ky.; a brother, Bob Carpenter and wife Dorothy of Helena, Ark.; grandchildren Rob and John Mark Smith, Heather White Trout, and Joshua White; and a host of friends across the country. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 501 W. Fifth St., conducted by pastor Dr. David Hughes. Family visitation will follow in the Brown Room. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Hospice of Winston-Salem.

CRADDOCK

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Kathleen Adkins Craddock, 76, of 308 Grand Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at her daughter's home. She was born Jan. 14, 1925, in Stokes County the daughter of the late William Henry and Sarah Ada Stevens Adkins. She was a former employee of High Point Paper Box Co. and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oscar Craddock; sisters Hester Rorrer, Annie Biggs, Louise Atwood and Ruby Craddock; half sister Roxie Craddock; and half brothers Hardy Adkins, Ed Adkins and John Adkins. Surviving are two daughters, Wyonie (Ronny) Killingsworth of Virgilina, Va., and Nancy (Glenwood) Coats of Jamestown; a son, James (Lynne) Craddock of Archdale; a sister, Beulah Hughes of Stuart, Va.; three grandchildren, Annette Reid of Jamestown, James Coats of Thomasville and Brandi Craddock of Archdale; and two great-grandchildren, Tara Bryant and Jane Coats. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Rorrer officiating. Burial will be at Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

GIBSON

Mr. Hubert "Hub" H. Gibson, 80, passed away Jan. 12, 2002, at Arbor Acres Retirement Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Gibson was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Madison, and he spent his youth at Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He served his country for 21 years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. After his retirement from the Navy, he and his wife spent 15 years cattle farming in Wildwood, Fla., until they moved to Statesville in 1975. There he farmed and became a very active member of Monticello United Methodist Church. Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty Gibson. He is survived by two sons, Hubert Harry Gibson Jr. of Gainesville, Fla., and Michael Dean Gibson of Miramar, Fla.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers Mike (Doria) and Julian (Nancy) Gibson of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Hilda Copeland of Phenix City, Ala. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Jan. 16, 2002, at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, 705 Davie Ave., Statesville, and the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Monticello United Methodist Church, 109 Island Ford Road, Statesville, NC 28625.

GIST

Deacon Leroy Gist, 76, of 760-D N. Highland Ave. passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his residence. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born April 17, 1925, to the late Johnnie Gist Jr. and Alma Rice Gist. He was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board, the Sunday-school, the B.T.U. and the Saint John's Laymens League. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He traveled as a musician with many recording artists across the United States. He is survived by a brother, Hiawatha D. Gist (Rosemary); Dr. Tyler Lloyd of New York; the church family at Mount Zion Baptist Church; and other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. Church Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Blanche Gantt Godfrey, 90, the wife of the late James H. Godfrey, died Sunday at Thomasville Medical Center. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. J.C. Green & Sons Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

HOLTON

FLORENCE, S.C. - Mrs. Mae Simpson Holton, 90, formerly of Thomasville, the wife of the late John Henry Holton, died Sunday at McLeod Health Center in Florence. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Thomasville City cemetery. J.C. Green & Sons is in charge of arrangements.
