Mrs. Ann J. Weaver of Winston-Salem, 73, died Saturday at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church.

WHITE

SALISBURY - Cornelia "Connie" Thompson Welch White, 79, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at her home. She was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Winston-Salem, a daughter of the late Sherman DeWitt Thompson and Verlie Maye Westmoreland Thompson. Mrs. White was the wife of the late Clyde Welch and the late Rev. Dr. Charles D. White. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salisbury and a former member of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at First United Methodist Church, Salisbury, with the Rev. Thomas L. Griffis officiating. Interment will be private for the family in Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the church. She is survived by three children, Del Welch of Lexington, LaDean Giles of Marietta, Ga. and Zenda Rushing of Cheraw, S.C.; three stepchildren, Denny White of Salisbury, Judy White of Mooresville and David White of Thomasville; three brothers, Gorrell Thompson of Youngsville and William Thompson and Odell Thompson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Rachel Chambers of Seattle; and 12 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215. Harry and Bryant Co. is serving her family.

BAKER

Mr. Robert M. Baker Sr., 89, died Friday morning at Arbor Acres. He was born Feb. 10, 1912, in LePlume, Pa., to James Ruel Baker and Mary Gardner Baker. Mr. Baker moved from Sarasota, Fla., to Winston-Salem in 1997. He had had a long career with IBM, retiring in 1971. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Hazel Battle Baker, in 1975, and his second wife, Edna J. Baker, in 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara B. Dorer and husband Pete of Pfafftown, and Linda B. Pettit and husband Elvy of Winston-Salem; and a son, Robert M. Baker Jr. and wife Nancy of Pfafftown; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C, S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem 27103. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the Baker family.

BLACK

FAIRBURN, Ga. - Mr. Howard Black Jr., 67, the husband of Loretta Poe Black, formerly of Ashe County, died Thursday. Badger Funeral Home, West Jefferson is in charge of arrangements.

EUBANKS

Mrs. Dorothy M. "Dottie" Eubanks, 71, of 120 Lori Lane, Winston-Salem died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at her home. She was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Forsyth County to Reuben Dewey and Violet Mae Mabe East. She and her husband were the owners of Dottie's Diner, 904 Stratford Road from May, 1990. Survivors include her husband, Richard Joseph Eubanks of the home; her mother, Violet Mabe Walker of Kernersville; her children, Chris and Cindy Frazier of Indian Trail, Mark Frazier of Winston-Salem, Tony and Jeanette Frazier of Kannapolis, Mike Frazier of Winston-Salem, Scott Frazier of Lewisville and Melissa and Burt Flowers of Lewisville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shelvy Jean Young and Donna Kay Van Dyk; and a brother, Bobby Ray East. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by Pastor Brian Taylor. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

GENTRY

Mr. Richard Lester Gentry Sr., 74, of Winston-Salem went to be with his beloved wife of 53 years, Frances Pardue Gentry, on Jan. 24, 2002. He was a loving father, grandfather and father-in-law. Mr. Gentry was born in Forsyth County to Daris Grant and Belle Hand Gentry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a steel worker for R.J. Reynolds Building Construction. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bobby Ray Gentry; seven brothers; and a sister. Survivors include two sons, Phillip Randall Gentry and wife Rebecca Ann of Kernersville, and Richard L. Gentry Jr. and wife Cindy of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Frances Dawn Gentry Mclaurin, Ashely Nicole Gentry and Richard Lester Gentry III; two great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Samantha Mclaurin; a brother, Virgil C. Gentry of Winston-Salem; and a special sister-in-law, Lena Call of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Chatham and the Rev. Robert Motsinger officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family requests that memorials be made to Elon Baptist Church, 3701 Rosey St., Winston-Salem, NC 27401.

GRAY

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Harold Allen Gray, 45, of Sparks Road passed away Jan. 23, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Gray was born Aug. 17, 1956, in Forsyth County to Harold Lee and Mary Allen Gray. Mr. Gray was employed by Carl Rose & Sons and was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his son, Marty Allen Gray of the home; his father and stepmother, Harold Lee and Dina Gray of Clemmons; and two sisters, Terry Lee Snow of Carolina Beach and Kim Gray Grubb of Greenville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Cook. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Gray will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30p.m. Friday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

HILL

LEXINGTON - Amanda Dawn Pickett Hill, 24, the wife of Michael Hill, died Friday at High Point Regional Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge of arrangements.

JENNINGS

TRINITY - Jimmy Martin Jennings, 47, the husband of Betsy Thomas Jennings, died Friday. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Full Gospel Miracle Chapel. Cumby Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

KINARD

Mr. Clarence "Clay" Kinard departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 26, 1917, to Calvin and Julia Wolf Kinard in Laurens County, S.C. The family moved to Winston-Salem when he was young and he attended public schools here. For 50 years, Clay resided in New York and Cambria Heights, N.Y., where he was a metal polisher and chauffeur. He retired to Winston-Salem in 1989. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings Mrs. Lucille K. Meator, Willie Lee Kinard, Mrs. Geneva K. McClendon and Al C. Kinard; his beloved nephew, George H. McClendon; and son-in-law, Dr. James P. Holland. Survivors include three daughters, twins Dr. Barbara K. Phillips (Garret) and Mrs. Constance K. Holland, and Mrs. Joan K. Phillips (Ervin); a stepdaughter, Mrs. Nancy G. Armstrong (Charles and Chad); his beloved granddaughter, Mrs. Eleanor Phillips-Phipps (Therron); and the "apple of his eye," his great-grandson, Garret B. Phipps; a niece, Mrs. Carlita K. Sheppard (Lorenzo); great-nieces; his brother-in-law, Walter G. McClendon; and many cousins, other family and friends, including his Sunrise Towers neighbors. The family expresses gratitude to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice staff. They suggest that memorials be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Graveside rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 26, 2002, by the Rev. Greatha Neal at Evergreen cemetery. (Hooper)

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Bertha Brooks Mason, 72, the wife of Ralph Alexander Mason, died Friday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MOORE

VILAS - Mr. Narvie S. Moore, 94, died Friday at Watauga Medical Center, Boone. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hampton Funeral Home, Boone.

ROCHE

WEST JEFFERSON - William Patrick Roche, 86, died Friday at Ashe Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel.

SANER

SANDY RIDGE - Ms. Annie Mae "Buck" Saner, 71, died Monday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

SAUNDERS

KERNERSVILLE - Shell Henry Saunders, 65, the husband of Wanda Jackson Saunders, died Friday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

SHANER

Mrs. Betty Thornton Shaner of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Roanoke Va., to Harold Thornton and Lucy Williams Thornton. Mrs. Shaner is survived by a daughter, Lucy Henderson and husband Rick of Baltimore Md.; and three grandchildren, Haley, Ainsley and Ellette Henderson. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. J. Marion Rector. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Ever-green cemetery, Roanoke Va.

SHIELDS

Our beloved brother, David T. Shields, passed from life unto death Jan. 21, 2002. He attended the local public schools and worked for Ara Services. He leaves to cherish his memories four brothers, Dennis (Josie) Shields and Harry L. Shields of Winston-Salem, Robert (Johnny Mae) Shields of Reidsville and William (Lanna) Shields of Maryland; three sisters, Gloria (Quincy) Rose, Betty Adams and Julia Shields, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. There will be no viewing of our loved one.

SMITH

Hazel Laura Oliver Smith, beloved and courageous mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, at Vienna Village Retirement Home in Pfafftown. She was born to James Brush and Virginia Brown Oliver on Aug. 24, 1904, in Sparta, Ga. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1925 and received an additional degree in later years from High Point College. Her death was preceded by that of her husband, Charles Milton Smith, in 1965. She is survived by their only daughter, Nancy Josephine Smith Thomas and her husband, John Charles Thomas; and her grandchildren, Laura Melanie Thomas, named for her grandmother, and John Charles Thomas Jr., who both live in Philadelphia. "Mimi" maintained with her two grandchildren a continued dialogue and keen interest in their careers, goals and pursuit of happiness. She had a long, successful career as an elementary-school teacher in North Carolina and Florida. Her last position was at Johnson Street Elementary School in High Point where she taught with her good friend, Lola Smith Hodgin, for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, decorative arts, needlework, a variety of sports and visiting with her friends, particularly Mary King, Mamie Lucas and Ann Lore, in recent years. She was a staunch supporter of Wake Forest basketball and the ACC. She belonged to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in High Point before joining Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Jack Yarborough will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield, NC 27053.

SPAINHOUR

KING - Mary Evelyn Pratt Spainhour, 83, of Jefferson Church Road died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1918, in Stokes County to Nathaniel A. and Tannie Lane Pratt. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Spainhour; two sisters, Hazel Montgomery and Edith Gordon; and a brother, Otis Pratt. Surviving are two daughters, Ruth S. Voss of Tobaccoville and Ann S. (Bill) Nelson of Walkertown; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Frances (Alvin) Fulk and Avis Bottoms, all of Pinnacle, Margaret Smith of King, Essie Spainhour of Rural Hall and Ernestine (Richard) Boner of Winston-Salem; and six brothers, John (Dorothy) Pratt, Grady (JoAnn) Pratt and Earlie (Muriel) Pratt, all of Pinnacle, June (Amy) Pratt of Fletcher and Dilmer Ray (Inieda) Pratt and Gene (Louise) Pratt, all of King. Mrs. Spainhour was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, with Glenn Vanmeter, Jerry Simpkins and Darrell Portwood, ministers, and Pastor Randy Wall officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorials may be made to Jefferson Church of Christ cemetery Fund, 8200 Jefferson Church Road, Rural Hall, NC 27050.

SWAIM

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Virgil Lee "Buzz" Swaim, 72, died Jan. 20, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Yadkin County to D.T. and Dovey Swaim. He served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from AT&T. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen B. Swaim; four sons, Victor, Michael (Becky), Richard (Sandra) and Keith (Debbie); 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held today, Jan. 26, 2002. At his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea.

WALKER

Mrs. Annie Evelyn Lambeth "Pee Wee" Walker, 75, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, January 24, 2002, at her home. She was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late Albert David and Annie May Woosley Lambeth. Mrs. Walker was a member of New Eden Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Harmon. She is survived by her husband, James Norman Walker of the home; a daughter, Arlene Stalter of Dunn; a son, Norman W. Walker of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Boyd of Clemmons; and a brother, David Lambeth of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at New Eden Moravian Church by the Rev. Robert M. "Bob" Peek Sr. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Walker will lie in state 30 minutes before the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or New Eden Moravian Church, 3680 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
