LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Norma Jean Dykes Dull, 72, of Senoa Drive died Jan. 25, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Spencer County, Ind. on Oct. 16, 1929, to Vance and Ruth Warren Dykes. Mrs. Dull was a member of Lewisville Baptist Church and she was retired from Owens-Illinois. Surviving are her husband, Jack, of the home; a son, Gary Jones and his wife, Debbie of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Janet Lynn Gough and her husband, Steve of Lewisville; two grandchildren, Katrina Gough and Brett Gough; a brother, William Dykes of DeRidder, La.; three sisters, Edith Benfield of Lewisville, Ann Colvert of Winston-Salem, Marie Floyd of Boonville, Ind. and special sisters-in-law. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Lewisville Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Priest and the Rev. Ralph Stanley Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Lewisville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 327, Lewisville, NC 27023.

FRANKLIN

Psalm 121:1-2: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." It was early Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, when the angel of the Lord reached out its everlasting arms and said, "Come unto me and rest." Our beloved Ms. Evelyn Yvette Franklin of 978 Woodleaf Court was summoned home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Evelyn, a.k.a., "Vet" was born Dec. 8, 1955, to the late Thomas Britton and Mrs. Ida M. Franklin Penn in Winston-Salem. Vet attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1973. She was also a graduate of Winslam Business College with an associate degree in business and attended Forsyth Technical Community College. Vet was employed at BellSouth Communications for 22 years. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk/secretary, a willing worker of the nurses' board, the program committee and pulpit committee. She leaves not to mourn but to cherish many memories, a son, Tramayne A. Franklin of the home; a loving and devoted mother and best friend, Mrs. Ida M. Franklin Penn of the home; two brothers, Ronald R. (Deborah) Franklin of Winston-Salem and Kenneth B. (Deidra) Franklin of Atlanta; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn F. Shouse of Winston-Salem; two devoted uncles, James and Samuel Franklin, both of Winston-Salem; several other uncles and aunts of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Tramayne R., Travonte D. and Tanwan S. Franklin, all of Winston-Salem; two nephews and a niece; her loving and devoted fiance and soul mate, Deacon James Parms of Winston-Salem; two loving and devoted friends, Charlene Duncan and Vanessa Miller, both of Winston-Salem; a loving sister-in-Christ, Phyllis Morning; and a host of devoted friends and admirers. She cherished and loved her BellSouth family and the Mount Carmel Baptist Church family. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, from the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. A.T. Griffey officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. (Russell)

MADISON- Mrs. Nellie Ann Hairston Goolsby, 67, of 1090 K Fork Road, died Jan. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. on Monday Jan. 28, 2002, at Goodwill Baptist Church in Madison. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was a native of Rockingham County, a member of Goodwill Baptist Church and a retired employee of Unifi. She is survived by her husband, Charles Goolsby of Walnut Cove; a son, Charles Hairston of Madison; two daughters, Shirley A. Hairston and Peggy L. Hairston of Winston-Salem; two brothers, James Brown of Upper Marlboro, Md., George Brown of Madison; four sisters, Eddie Mae Moore, Addie B. Martin, Elsie P. Hughes and Navura Brown all of Madison; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

HARLEY

Ms. Ida Mae Harley, 101, of 2005 Bethania Road, passed on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002. She was born on Sept. 15, 1900, in Jefferson, S. C. to the late Ander Meritt and Lillie Mae Sullivan. She was a retired employee of the Export Tobacco Center. She was a preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Chambers and son, James Anderson. She leaves to cherish her loving memories her husband, John Ben Harley; a daughter: Mrs. Lillie M. Byrant, of Charlotte; three sisters: Ola Mae Price of Pageland, S.C., Mary Ann Austin of Jefferson, S.C. and Tiara Merrit of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 18 great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at 1 p.m. from the Saint Matthew Apostolic Church, located at 3640 New Walkertown Road, where Bishop Joseph P. Lowery will officiate. Internment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. at the church. The family may be contacted and the funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 133 Winterbrook Court, the home of grandson John Jowers. Arrangements entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (GILMORE)

Mrs. Minnie R. Huntley, 91, died Jan. 23, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Her funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. (BROWN)

INMAN

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Cora Simmons Inman, widow of Ernest E. Inman, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Inman was born in Surry County, May 9, 1915, to the late John Bill and Della Simmons. She was a homemaker and a member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church. She was a member and past matron of OES Pilot Mountain Chapter 23 and a member of the Northern Hospital Auxiliary. She had been a member and past president of the Longhill Extension Homemakers Club. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Carswell (Guy) and Joy Adams of Winston-Salem and a son, Billy E. Inman (Joan) of Mount Airy; six grandchildren, William Dale Marshall (Tammy) of Mooresville, Cynthia M. Johannes (Bill) of Greenville, S.C., Dr. Barry E. Inman (Bunny) of Columbus, Ga., Dwight Inman of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Angie Royster of Dallas, Texas, Eric Royster of Little Rock, Ark. And Joseph Adams of Winston-Salem; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rachel Danley and Alice Lewis of Mount Airy; a brother, Jack Simmons of Pilot Mountain. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Inman was preceded in death by four sisters, Annie Simmons, Viola Taylor, Stella Simmons and Lessie Bryant, and three brothers, Claude, Henry and Ray Simmons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Simmons Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stewart Mauck, the Rev. Fred Chilton and the Rev. Johnson Gupton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain and at other times at the home of Bill and Joan Inman, 253 Hunting Hill Drive, Mount Airy. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to Simmons Grove Baptist Church or Hospice. The family would like to express their thanks to their mother's many loving friends and neighbors, her Simmons Grove Baptist Church family, her care givers and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the many acts of kindness, prayers, cards and loving care. The Inman family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

JESSUP

Mr. Martin Edd Jessup, 78, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Jessup was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Patrick County, Va., to William Martin and Della McBride Jessup. He was retired from Power Construction Co. of Thomasville and was a member of American Legion Post #53 in Greensboro. He was also a member of the Hobert Frazier Bible Class of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. Mr. Jessup is survived by his wife, Hilda Linville Jessup of the home; two daughters, Evelyn Lowrance and husband Mike of High Point and Carol Neighbors and husband Odell of Watkinsville, Ga.; along with two granddaughters; also three brothers, Arthur Jessup and wife Marie of Mount Airy, Coolidge Jessup and wife Kathy of Tampa, Fla.; Jacob Jessup and wife Mabel of Canyon Lake, Texas, and a special daughter-in-law, Kari Rendos of Creedmoor. A 12:30 p.m. funeral service will be conducted Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, by Dr. Cecil Cave and the Rev. Paul Riggs at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either Hospice & Palliative Care, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 3733 Ogburn Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

JOHNSON

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Charlie Winfred Johnson, 76, of Kernersville, died Jan. 25, 2002. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Annette Payne Johnson, of the residence and a daughter, Laura Johnson Smith, and husband, Johnny, of Kernersville. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hillcrest Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael G. Smith. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Memorials may be directed to the Cancer Center at High Point Regional Health System, Development Office, c/o Meredith Eanes, 601 N. Elm St., High Point NC 27262.

JOHNSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. William Roscoe Johnson, 75, of 487 Crotts Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Blackwater Community Church.

MARTIN

Mrs. Lena Antha Martin, 86, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Iredell County to Elam M. and Doshia Ann Stewart Josey. She was a member of the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church and was formerly a nurse at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center and the Blumenthal Jewish Home. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mr. Letroy Burns Yontz, in 1955; three sisters, Laura Gautier, Marie Rising and Edna Wright; and three brothers, Arch, Albert and Ted Josey. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Claudia Brown (husband Bobby) of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Benny Brown (wife Donna) of Kernersville and Ken Brown (wife Judy) of Mocksville; a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Nicole Brown, and a sister-in-law, Josephine Weaver of Salisbury. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews who were very loving and caring to their aunt. A special thanks to the family for all their care that was given to her during her illness. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joel K. Boyles officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church, 137 Baltimore Road, Advance, NC 27006.

MASSEY

Mr. William Barnes Massey, 80, of 1000 N. Jackson Ave. passed away on Wednesday Jan. 25, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1921, in Lancaster, S.C., to the late Ernest and Estelle Jones Massey. He had resided in Winston-Salem for over 60 years. He was an active and faithful member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a member of the usher board. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Mr. Massey was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Massey, and a son, Ronald Massey. He is survived by a loving and devoted grandson, Ronald Thomas; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Samuel Massey of Brooklyn, N.Y., Richard Jones of Cincinnati, Ohio, James Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Robert Jones of Texas; two uncles, three aunts, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many loving friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday Jan. 28, 2002, at 1 p.m. from the Shiloh Baptist Church with Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Monday at the church. (Russell)

MATTHEWS

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Dr. Charles Odell "Chuck" Matthews II, a native of Winston-Salem, who had resided in Williamsburg for the past 25 years, died Saturday evening, Jan. 19, 2002, as a result of a single-car accident. Dr. Matthews had been a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the College of William and Mary for most of his career and for the last several years had helped establish and oversee the operation of a drug-rehabilitation center in Williamsburg. He is survived by his wife, Judy C. Matthews; his daughter, Stephanie C. Matthews, both of Williamsburg; his son, Charles Odell "Chad" Matthews III and wife Linda and their two children of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; his brother, James R. Matthews and wife, Jane P. North and their children of Winston-Salem; and his first cousin, Katy M. Boles and her husband, Mickey W. Boles, and their children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in the Wrenn Chapel on the campus of the College of William and Mary. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home.

ROBBINS

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Ruby Colene Keeling Robbins, 89, of 400 Robbins Lane in the Silver Valley community died Friday at the home of her daughter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville.

SHELTON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Wallace Augustus Shelton of 1035 North St. Mount Airy, the husband of Christine Mills Shelton died Jan. 26, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. A native of Mount Airy, he was born Sept. 12, 1909, the son of the late William P. and Ada Lowe Shelton. He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at the university he was associated with the intramural sports department, the last three years as associate director. After graduation he began his career as a teacher and coach at White Plains High School in Surry County where he remained for two years. He spent the next 40 years as a teacher/coach at Mount Airy High School. He served on the board of directors of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for several years. In April of 2001, he was selected to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He also was inducted into The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. "Coach," as he was called, loved his work, both teaching and coaching. He also loved his church. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy where he served in many offices, including teaching a men's Bible class for 40 years and where he was made a deacon for life. Mr. Shelton's hobby was woodworking and carpentry which resulted in his building a weekend cabin at Ararat where for several years he and his wife spent some time in the summers. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Christine Mills Shelton of the home, two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Reeves, of Pilot Mountain, Joyce Robertson and husband, Bob, of Clemmons and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Bob Mills and wife, Jackie, of Ararat; sister-in-law Martha Shelton of Baton Rouge, La., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Opie L. Shelton and a sister-in-law Edith Proctor. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday Jan. 28, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy with Dr. Roger Gilbert, the Rev. Bill Edwards, and the Rev. Kevin Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale cemetery in Mount Airy. Mr. Shelton's body rests at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy where the family will receive friends on Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 714 North Main St. Mount Airy, NC 27030; to the Wallace Shelton Scholarship Fund, Mount Airy High School, 1110 North South St. Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to the Wallace and Christine Shelton Scholarship Fund, Surry Community College 630 S. Main St. Dobson, NC 27017; or any organization or church of the donors choice. Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy is serving the Shelton Family.

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Clettie Garrett Sowers, 85, of 292 Pilot School Road died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 at her residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel.

STANLEY

ELKIN - Mrs. Frances Wall Stanley, 75, of Austin Traphill Road passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Stanley was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Surry County to the Rev. Avery and Dora Carter Wall Sr. Mrs. Stanley received her doctorate in primary education and retired from Elkin City School Systems after 40 years of teaching. She was a member of Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Floyd Z. Stanley; a brother, Avery Wall, Jr.; and a nephew, Dale Wall. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Gilly Wall of Elkin; a sister and brother-in-law, Carniemell and James Williams of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Mattie Wall of Elkin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. James Williams, the Rev. Trent Wall, the Rev. Tim Nelson and the Rev. Reece Wall. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Stanley will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

SWAIM

Mr. Virgil Lee "Buzz" Swaim, 72, of Pfafftown, died Jan. 20, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Yadkin County to D.T. and Dovey Swaim. He served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from AT&T. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen B. Swaim; four sons, Victor, Michael (Becky) Richard (Sandra) and Keith (Debbie); 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. At his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea.
