POWELL

Mr. James Chester Powell Jr. of 2518 N. Cherry St., passed away at Forsyth Medical Center, Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2002. He was born Oct. 24, 1932, in Forsyth County to James C., Sr., and Marie Powell. He was a 1952 graduate of Carver High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Powell was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Cathedral Choir until his health failed. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Laura Careathers Powell of the home; three daughters, Barbara Powell, Annette Henderson and Jesstena Nichols, all of Winston-Salem; seven sons, James Thomas Powell, Boris Miller, Jesse (Shirley), Wrevernus, Marcellus, Denorris (Vanessa) and Reginald (Annette) Nichols, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, the Rev. Thomas (Mary) Powell of Seattle, Wash., and Melvin (Treva) Reece of Philadelphia, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; a devoted grandchild of the five he raised, Sherrod Nichols; two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and many friends, among them three devoted friends, Alphonso Washington, Oscar Hines and Charles Robinson. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at New Bethel Baptist Church, where Dr. Jerry Drayton will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed at Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave., from 2 to 6 p.m. today. SCRATTISH

Mr. Frank Scrattish Sr. died Friday morning at Forsyth Medical Center following a long illness. He was born in Fayette, Pa., on Oct. 17, 1924, to Anthony and Theresa Lukegich Scrattish. Mr. Scrattish served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a professional welder as long as health permitted. He moved to Winston-Salem in November 2000. Preceding him in death was his wife, Gilda Maxine Scrattish in 1998. Surviving are five sons, Frank Scrattish Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Winston-Salem, Steve Scrattish and Gene Scrattish, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bill Scrattish and Donna and Roger Scrattish of Green Bay, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Richey, Brandy, Chelsey, Donovan, April, Amber, Sean, McKenzie and Jennifer; and six great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Scrattish Jr. Burial will follow in the National cemetery, Salisbury. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

SHORE

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Mary Sue Sprinkle Shore, 87, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born April 30, 1914, in Davie County to the late George T. and Cornelia Howell Sprinkle. Mrs. Shore was a homemaker and a member of Courtney Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde F. Shore. Surviving are her two sons, Edward "Eddie" (Virginia Ann) Shore of High Point; Billy Dean Shore, Rowan Homes Inc. of Salisbury; two grandsons, Glenn Shore, Kevin Shore; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Holden of Winston-Salem. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gentry Family Chapel. Burial will follow in Harmony Grove Friends Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

THOMPSON

Mr. Ashley Mills (Teddy) Thompson, 55, passed on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, unexpectedly. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest C. Thompson, and mother, Bessie Mae Lewis Thompson. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Kaye Louise, Barbara Jean and Sharon Elizabeth, and a brother, Ernest Donald. He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Sharon Settle and Krystal Shuford, and a son, Alex Shuford, of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Carolyn (Willie) Andrews, Constance (Horace) Scott, Betsy (Orestes) Williams, Deborah (Robert) Bryant and Earnestine Thompson, and a host of other nieces, nephews and other relatives. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Beasley's Chapel with the Rev. Horrace Cutter officiating. Family visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. Beasley's Funeral Service of Winston-Salem is in charge of the services and arrangements.

WHITE

Ms. Leola White, 51, of 1850 E. Fifth St. passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 27, 1950, to the late Cleveland and Catherine Evans and attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Bryant "Winnie Man" White; three sisters, Shirley Duncan, Cathy Allen and Ida Evans; three brothers, Willie White Jr., Robbin White and Cleveland Evans Jr., all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Sharika, Darryl, Bryant, Brittany and Briana; a very devoted godmother, Ms. Lillie Mae Young, and a very special friend, Kerry Thompson; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Russell Funeral Home with Elder Jerry W. Powell officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. (Russell).

WHITLEY

CLEMMONS - Mr. Emless Whitley, 87, formerly of 422 Walkertown Guthrie Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. He was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Wilkes County to Treeley York and Effie Higgins Whitley. Mr. Whitley attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Walkertown and was retired from Fogle Furniture Company. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Oakley Whitley of the home; a son, Barry W. Whitley and wife Myrna of Mocksville; two granddaughters, Brooke Cashion and husband Jake of Walkertown, and Andrea Whitley of Mocksville; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Cashion of Walkertown. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. James Lawton and the Rev. Wes Austin. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. YOKELY

Mrs. Ruth Huls Yokely died early Sunday morning, Jan. 20, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 28, 1919, in Winston-Salem to William Edward and Mary Elizabeth Clemmons Huls. Mrs. Yokely was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Bruce (Monnie) Sapp of Kernersville and Mrs. Paul S. (Blanche) Shamel of Winston-Salem; four brothers Virgil, Charles, Harvey and Leon Huls, all of Winston-Salem. She was retired from Old Salem Inc. and was a member of the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society. Mrs. Yokely was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and a past member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Craig (Charlotte Montez Perry) McConnell of Winston-Salem; a son, Gerald Yokely of Tobaccoville; a grandson, Trevor Yokely and his wife Tricia and their infant daughter Nicole, all of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville by the Rev. Jack Yarbrough. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Clemmons Village II, located at 6441 Holder Road, Clemmons, by the Rev. Roland Barnhart. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Music Fund of Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

ADAMS

Mrs. Frances Leatherwood Adams, 72, of Hawkwood Trail died at her residence Jan. 24, 2002. She was born in Haywood County on Sept. 16, 1929, to William and Mayme Liner Leatherwood. Mrs. Adams was an active member of First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, served on the board and was a member of the women's fellowship. She was also a volunteer at the Samaritan Soup Kitchen. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James of the home; three sons, Tim Adams and his wife, Kay, of Clemmons, Keith and his wife, Monica, of Winston-Salem, and Neal and his wife, Lynn, of Apex; six grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Vickery, Nancy Duckett, Patsy Cook and Lynda Leonard; and a brother, Charles Leatherwood, all of Waynesville. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at First Christian Church with the Rev. James Cobb and the Rev. Willie Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. BAITY

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. James Wesley Baity Sr., 74, of N.C. Highway 801 N. died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Courtney Baptist Church with the Rev. John Brown officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service Saturday. They request that memorials be considered for the charity of the donor's choice. Mr. Baity was born May 15, 1927, in Davie County to the late Flake and Blanche Burgess Baity. He was a heavy-equipment operator and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a lifelong member of Courtney Baptist Church and a well-known and respected member of the Clarksville community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Odolczyk Baity; a sister, Fannie Belle Bailey; and a brother, David Ed Baity. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Elliott (Patricia Jean Baity) Boyd of Soda Springs, Idaho, two sons, James Wesley (Linda) Baity and Kenneth Wayne (Mavis) Baity, all of Mocksville; eight grandchildren, Leslie Irvin, David Baity, Luke Baity, Daniel Baity, Erin Baity Williams, Amanda Boyd, Erika Boyd and Melissa Boyd; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Frances Warner, Lydia Shore, Betty York and Gaynell Lawrence; and a brother, William Ray Baity Sr., all of Mocksville. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Forsyth County Hospice & Palliative CareCenter for the care and compassion shown to Mr. Baity during his illness and SPECIAL THANKS to Lisa, Princilla and Amanda. Eaton Funeral Home of Mocksville is serving the family of Mr. Baity.

BOLES

Mr. Clifton Hartgrove Boles, 79, of Winston Salem died Jan. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Stokes County to Nathaniel Pradie and Powell Lessie Hartgrove Boles. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was retired from United Engineering of Kernersville. Surviving are his wife, Audrey Temples Boles of Britthaven, Kernersville; a son, Terry C. Boles and wife Janie of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Brittany and Marissa; four sisters, Mary Pauline Caudle and Jeweldene "Tim" Boles of King, Margie Ellen Beare of Alexandria Va., and Peggy Lon Culler of Pinnacle; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bobby Roberson officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

COCKERHAM

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Daniel Cosby Cockerham, 80, died Thursday at his home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy.

COZART

Mrs. Hazel Collins Cozart, 91, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Guilford Health Center in Greensboro. She was born April 28, 1910, in Iredell County to John Arch and Bessie Cartwright Collins. After retiring from Hanes Hosiery, she and her husband started Cozart's Flower Shop. She was very active in her church, Marvin United Methodist, and various civic and senior groups. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Collins and Ernest T. Collins, and a sister, Blanch Lakey. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles Dawson Cozart; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickey and Steve Kiger of Greensboro; a brother, John Collins of Fuquay-Varina; a sister, Helen Hager of Salisbury; a grandson, S. Brad Kiger of Breckenridge, Colo.; two granddaughters, Kelly Kiger Sapp of Huntersville and Jennifer B. Kiger of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Patti Suggs and the Rev. Joe Taylor. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Marvin United Methodist Church, 4401 Indiana Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105 or Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

Mrs. Daisy Mae Waddell El, 67, of 152 Athens Drive passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at her residence. She was born May 28, 1934, in Forsyth County, the daughter of Hattie and Herman Waddell. She is survived by her husband, Fousel C. El II; her children, Fousel III, Moudkaii, Muhammad, Khadija, Zedia, Fatima and Saladine; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Holy Trinity Full Gospel Baptist Church, 651 Akron Drive, Winston-Salem, with funeral services to follow. Pastor Richard C. Miller Sr. will preside. Graveside rites will be at Evergreen cemetery. (Russell)

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Harold Allen Gray, 45, died Wednesday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swan Creek Baptist Church. Hodges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GREENE

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Theola Harshaw Chesnutt Greene, 100, of 1000 Northwood Drive died Jan. 21, 2002, at Charlotte Health Care Center. Mrs. Greene was born Dec. 9, 1901, in Randleman, a daughter of the late William and Maggie Harshaw. She was a life member of the Harshaw Grove Baptist Church in Randleman. Mrs. Greene was an avid reader as long as her health permitted and especially enjoyed reading to others at Selwyn Life and Charlotte Health Care Centers for the past 10 years. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Greene will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Harshaw Grove Baptist Church, 3840 Bowman Ave., Randleman. The family will greet friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Greene is survived by two daughters, Mary Brown (Wilson) of Atlanta and Frances C. Bullock (Lewis) of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James Willie Chesnutt. Long & Son Mortuary Service is serving the Greene family.

HANCOCK

COOLEEMEE - Lila Mae Howerton Hancock, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was the daughter of the late Mary Taylor and John Howerton. Mrs Hancock is survived by two daughters, Jean Baggett (Larkin) of Colonial Heights, Va., and Sue Steele-Correll of Cooleemee; a son, Harold A Wagner (Germaine) of Lexington; six grandchildren, Elaine Wagner Sill, Larkin Bee Baggett III, Quentina Steele Price, Carroll Steele, Lee Steele and Salynn Steele Jarrell; and eight great-grandchildren, Brent Sill, Savannah Sill, Jake Sill, Quenna Price, Will Steele, Quentin Steele, Evan Steele and Max Jarrell. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Wagner; and her husbands, Alfred Owens Wagner and James Hancock. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, with Janet Talum Davenport officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, 284 Marginal St., Cooleemee, NC 27014; or Davie County Hospice, 158 Hospice St., Mocksville, NC 27028. Davie Funeral Service Inc., 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, will be serving the Hancock family.

HART

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Rachel Margaret Christian Hart, 86, formerly of Francisco, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Walnut Ridge Assisted Living Center, Walnut Cove. She was born April 24, 1915, in Stokes County to Fred Arthur and Annie George Christian. Mrs. Hart was a homemaker and a member of Francisco Presbyterian Church. She is survived by a nephew, Bob Fred Christian and wife Betty Mae of Rural Hall; and a niece, Mary Ann Harris and husband James of Georgetown, S.C. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Francisco Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Rickey Rogers. Mrs. Hart is at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain and will be taken to Francisco Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, where she will remain until time of the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the church. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to Francisco Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund, C/O Betty Wright, 1040 Wright Farm Road, Westfield, NC 27053. HEMMINGS

DOBSON - Mr. Jim D. Hemmings, 83, of 423 Blessing Drive passed away Jan. 24 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born July 29, 1918, in Dobson to Bertha Hancock Hemmings and Daniel Webster Hemmings. His parents; his stepmother, Alma Hemmings; and three sisters, Violet Llewelyn, Myrtle Stewart and Loree Southard preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mary Ruth Draughn Hemmings and a daughter, Dianne and son-in-law Rob Morgan of Billings, Mo. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bertha Jewel and Fletcher McLane of Naples, Fla. and Lucille Rosendahl of Dobson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Betty Hemmings, David and Peggy Hemmings and Cleve and Nancy Hemmings, all of Dobson. His wife's sisters and brothers are Jobie Draughn and Minnie Coe of Dobson, Pauline Ransdell of Mount Airy, Clyde and Dare Draughn of Bowie, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from N.C. State University and Colorado State University with a master's degree in agriculture. He taught vocational agriculture for 35 years. He also served as an agricultural extension agent in Montgomery County and as a tax supervisor for Surry County for several years. He was ordained a deacon at Mountain Park Baptist Church and taught Sunday school there and at Salem Baptist Church for 27 years. Jim Dan loved growing roses in his garden. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Davis and Son Funeral Home in Dobson. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Salem Baptist Church in Dobson with the Rev. Darryl Tate officiating. Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 32, Dobson, NC 27017; Northern Hospice, P.O. Box 6626, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
