HEMPHILL
Mr. Ed Lee Hemphill, 81, of 4724 Old Rural Hall Road passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Brian Center Nursing Center after a period of illness. He was a former member of the Second New Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Winston-Salem State University. He is survived by a daughter, Esther Boulware; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Eveline Beck of New York; three brothers, Clevester Hemphill of New York and Leonard Hemphill and Robert Hemphill, both of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be noon Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in the chapel of Russell Funeral Home, with Dr. John Mendez officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery. HERRING
NARROWS, Va. - Mr. Marvin Eugene "Gene" Herring, 42, died Jan. 22, 2002. He was born July 3, 1959, in Rome, Ga., to Marvin "Bill" Herring and Sandra Diane Herring. He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Susan. He left behind his mother, Sandra; special friend Jack Garner; wife Pamela of the home; brothers Curtis, David, Billy and Charles (Helen) of Winston-Salem, and Randy (Reba) of Walnut Cove; his daughter, Serina (Randall) Adams of Hiwassi, Va.; two grandchildren, Billy Joe and Casey; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Riffe's Funeral Service, 600 Main St., Narrows, VA 24124. Services will be held Saturday at 12 noon. Mr. Herring will be buried in Lakeview cemetery, Narrows.
HIATT
Mr. Sherrill Harvey Hiatt, 58 of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his home. He was born March 10, 1943, in Forsyth County to Everette Brooklyn and Edith Swaim Hiatt. Mr. Hiatt was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church, retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department in 1980, was awarded the Handicapped Citizen of the Year in 1974, he held his private pilot's license and founded the Wheelchair Aviators Club. He is preceded in death by his father, Everette Brooklyn Hiatt; and his stepfather, A.W. Hicks. Surviving are his wife, Gayle Stone Hiatt of the home; a daughter, Sherri Renee Bell and husband Randy of Pfafftown; a granddaughter, Andrea Brooke Bell; his mother, Edith Swaim Hicks of Winston-Salem; a sister, Becky Eckrote and husband David of Kernersville; a brother, Kevin Hiatt and wife Debbie of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews; and a special canine friend, Dudley. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Oaklawn Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Kilbreth, the Rev. Clint M. Branch and Mr. Kevin Hiatt. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. HICKS
LOCUST GROVE, Va. - Mr. Bobby G. Hicks, 65, formerly of Forsyth County died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va. Born in North Carolina, he was a field contract manager for Nextel. Survivors include his wife, Moszelle W. Hicks; two daughters, Amanda Wachter of the home and Katherine Hicks of Minnesota; three sisters, Norma Sue Taylor (Bobby), Patricia Stone (Billy) and Lynda Bennett (Dennis), all of North Carolina; a brother, Roy Hicks (Gloria) of North Carolina; a grandson, Michael Hicks; four nephews; and five nieces. A son, Robert E. Hicks, predeceased him. A funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Va. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, Bowling Green. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Friends Union Church, Pinnacle. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
KINARD
Mr. Clarence "Clay" Kinard of 802 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apt. 3E, departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 26, 1917, to Calvin and Julia Wolf Kinard in Laurens County, S.C. The family moved to Winston-Salem when he was young and he attended public schools here. For 50 years, Clay lived in New York and Cambria Heights, N.Y., where he was a metal polisher and chauffeur. He retired to Winston-Salem in 1989. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings Mrs. Lucille Meator, Willie Lee Kinard, Mrs. Geneva K. McClendon and Al C. Kinard; his beloved nephew, George H. McClendon; and his son-in-law, Dr. James Holland. His survivors include three daughters, twins Dr. Barbara K. Phillips (Garret) and Mrs. Constance K. Holland and Mrs. Joan K. Phillips (Ervin); stepdaughter Mrs. Nancy G. Armstrong (Charles and Chad); his beloved granddaughter, Mrs. Eleanor Phillips-Phipps (Therron); and the "apple of his eye," his great-grandson, Garret B. Phipps; niece Mrs. Carlita K. Sheppard (Lorenzo); great-nieces; brother-in-law Walter G. McClendon; and many cousins, family and friends, including his Sunrise Towers neighbors. The family expresses gratitude to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home staff and requests that memorial be directed to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. LAYTON
RALEIGH - Mr. Robert F. Layton, 72, a native and lifelong resident of Raleigh, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 23, 2002, at Sunrise of Raleigh. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at North Raleigh Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road. Interment will be at Montlawn Memorial Park. Born Dec. 19, 1929, to Henry Owen and Emma S. Layton, he was one of four sons. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen S. Layton of the home; and two sons, Richard F. Layton of Lewisville and Timothy C. Layton of Raleigh. He is also survived by two of his three brothers, Leon E. Layton and J. Gilbert Layton, both of Raleigh. His brother Marvin B. Layton of Florence, S.C., preceded him in death. He was a devoted husband and a devoted father to his sons and their wives, Beth D. Layton of Lewisville and Jalenn S. Layton of Raleigh; and to his four grandchildren, Adam Layton, Anna Layton and Daniel Layton of Lewisville, and Madalyn Layton of Raleigh. Mr. Layton served in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea for three years and was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. DOBSON - Mr. Robert Jessie "Pete" Lowe, 64, the husband of Rachel Elizabeth Marion Lowe, died Wednesday at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bear Creek Baptist Church. Davis & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
MABE-HOLDER
WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Mabel Mabe-Holder, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Stokes County to the late John Enoch and Mary Tuttle James. She was employed by Washington Mills, Troutman and was a homemaker. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church for 52 years, where she faithfully served as Sunday school teacher, organized and led the youth group and was a member of the senior citizens (Bethelites). Preceding her in death was her first husband, Robert "Bud" Mabe; her second husband, Ervin Holder; a grandson, Tony Mabe; a sister; and three brothers. Surviving are three sons, Arnold Mabe (Hilda), Russell Mabe (Susie) and Jason Mabe (Ann), all of Walnut Cove; seven grandchildren, Randall Mabe, Renee Small, Chris Mabe, Lisa Mabe, Jennifer Mills, Heather Myers and Marlene Savage; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Rebecca Donaldson. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Keith Heitman officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at each son's home. They will also be in the church fellowship hall immediately after the service.

McKINNEY, Texas - Ms. Dora Carol Turner Marion, 87, passed away Jan. 22, 2002, at McKinney Healthcare Center in McKinney, Texas. She was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Yadkin County to the late, James Austin and Minnie Day Turner. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie Royall and Eva Royall; and three brothers, Melvin, Clarence and Charlie Turner. Surviving are two daughters, Judy (L.J.) Moore of Nebraska and Linda Marvin of Maryland; a sister, Ada (Hubert) Myers of High Point; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Billy Cury and the Rev. Kathy Earley. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. Burial will follow at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. MARSHALL
STATE ROAD - Mr. Gentry Odell Marshall, 78, of 192 Marvin Edwards Lane, the widower of Alma Lee Harris Marshall, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Marshall was born Nov. 28, 1923, in Surry County, the son of the late Jules and Mary Jane Cooke Marshall. He was a retired tobacco farmer and well-driller and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evon Jenkins of Hamptonville and Ila and Opie White of State Road; a sister-in-law, Josephine Marshall of State Road; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Bert Smith; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Thurmond and Viola Marshall and Leo Marshall; and a brother-in-law, Ransome Jenkins. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Dobson, conducted by the Rev. Cliff White. Burial will be at Mountain Park cemetery. LEXINGTON - William Bryant Martin, 83, the husband of Oneta Hilts Meyer Martin, died Wednesday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.
MATTHEWS
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Dr. Charles Odell "Chuck" Matthews II, a native of Winston-Salem, who had resided in Williamsburg for the past 25 years, died Saturday evening, Jan. 19, 2002, as a result of a single-car accident. Dr. Matthews had been a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the College of William and Mary for most of his career and for the last several years had helped establish and oversee the operation of a drug-rehabilitation center in Williamsburg. He is survived by his wife, Judy C. Matthews; his daughter, Stephanie C. Matthews, both of Williamsburg; his son, Charles Odell "Chad" Matthews III and wife Linda and their two children of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; his brother, James R. Matthews and wife, Jane P. North and their children of Winston-Salem; and his first cousin, Katy M. Boles and her husband, Mickey W. Boles, and their children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in the Wrenn Chapel on the campus of the College of William and Mary. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home.

LOWGAP - Mrs. Ruby Ethel Hiatt McCann, 82, the wife of Mr. Henry McCann, died Wednesday. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
MCFARLAND
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Ms. Cozette Graham McFarland of 238 E. 49th St., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at New York Methodist Hospital. Born to the late Goldie Graham, she was a native of Forsyth County and a resident of New York for the majority of her life. Survivors are her beloved children, Ms. Brenda Hill and Ronald McFarland, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a devoted granddaughter, Ms. Shanay Anderson of New York; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home, 1415 E. 14th St. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. MEADE
Mrs. Doris Kern Meade, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. Mrs. Meade was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Bay City, Mich., to Adolph and Iva Hammet Kern. She came to Winston-Salem in 1983 from Saginaw, Mich., and was a resident of Arbor Acres. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn, in 1989. Mrs. Meade is survived by her husband, Stanley A. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Irene Elizabeth Brown Mize, 75, of Mize Road, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. She was born May 21, 1926, in Davie County to the late William Richard and Ethel Ireland Brown. Mrs. Mize was a loving, devoted wife and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Troy W. Mize of the home; a sister, Mary Brown (Julius) Potts of Yadkinville; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn and the Rev. Grady Trivette. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Martin Motsinger, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Motsinger was born in Stokes County, a daughter of the late Willey and Ella Pore Martin and was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are her husband, Wesley Motsinger of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, W. Alvin and Wanda R. Motsinger of Kernersville; two grandchildren and their spouses, Liza and Mark Wearn and Chris and Marsha Motsinger; and a great-granddaughter, Marissa Black-Motsinger. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Howard Fleming. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service in the church fellowship hall.
