NIEMAN

Mr. John F. Nieman Sr., 82, of 220 Lamplighter Circle passed away Jan. 18, 2002, at The Oaks at Forsyth. John was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Baldwin, Long Island, N.Y., to John and Marie K. Nieman. He graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y., and from Villanova University in Philadelphia, where he played varsity football. Immediately after graduation, he began Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Marines, having enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor. He commanded a battalion of rocket launchers and saw action in Guadalcanal, Okinawa and Iowa Jima. He left the service with the rank of major. He worked for Johnson's Wax in Washington, D.C., Detroit and Atlanta, where he was southeastern district sales manager. He then founded the Nieman Co., a janitorial supply company, in Winston-Salem in 1964. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Larkin Nieman; three children, John F. Nieman Jr. and wife Martha Massie of Greensboro, Lisa Marie Nieman (Warren Durham) of Austin, Texas, and William Larkin Nieman (Terri, Aaron and Zachary Silver) of Greensboro; and a grandchild, Jeffrey Larkin Nieman of Chapel Hill. The Rev. Cecil W. Tice and the Rev. Christopher Roux will celebrate a memorial Mass at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at St. Leo the Great, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. Research Foundation, 1401-B Old Mill Circle, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family will receive friends after the Mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.

PENNELL

Mrs. June Weaver Pennell, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 25, 1920, in Landis to Henry M. and Belvia Wall Weaver. Mrs. Pennell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lindsey Hall Pennell; and a brother, Oscar M. Weaver. She retired from Royal Cake Co. after 11 years of service. Surviving are five daughters, Marie Blanton (husband Michael) of Davidson County, Pat Pennell of Stokesdale, Mary Welch of Winston-Salem, Alice Lambeth (husband Rocky) of Stokesdale and Sue Pennell of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Michael Blanton, Sherry Blanton, Shane Welch and Shane Tucker; three great-grandchildren, Trevor and Sydney Blanton and Zane Fritts; a sister, Ruth Mickler of Winston-Salem; two stepsisters, Dessie Snow of Middleborne, W.Va. and Betty Rodgers of China Grove; and three stepbrothers, Henry M. Weaver Jr. of Charlotte, George F. Weaver Sr. of Union, S.C., and Harold Wesley Weaver of Cornelius. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Evangelist Linda Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ROBERTSON

REIDSVILLE - Mr. Thomas Frederick "Fred" Robertson Sr., 74, of 1554 Ashley Loop died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. The funeral will 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial with military rites will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of the late George Dewey and Lula Allen Robertson and had lived in the Mount Hermon Community of Rockingham County for more than 50 years. He was a retired salesman with Big Bill Bottling Co., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Eden Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Audrey Rice Robertson of the home; a son, Thomas Frederick "Tom" Robertson Jr. and wife Janet of Denver; a daughter, Corinda R. Thompson and husband Daniel of Reidsville; brothers Bernard Robertson and Hunter Robertson of Eden and Hollis Robertson of Reidsville; and three grandchildren, Kristi Thompson, Katelyn Robertson and Dalton Robertson. Citty Funeral Home, Reidsville, is in charge of arrangements.

SINK

MIDWAY - Mr. Raymond Vernon Sink went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Forsyth County to the late Everette A. and Emma Leonard Sink. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Stamey E. and Dixie Sink. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Roxie Koontz Sink; two sons, Chris V. Sink of the home and Craig D. Sink and wife Anne of Pinnacle; a grand-daughter, Monica and husband Mark Tucker of Oakboro; a grandson, Travis D. Sink of Pinnacle; and a brother, Grady C. and wife Allene "Pat" Sink of Kernersville. He also was blessed with many special nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Sink was a faithful member of First United Church of Christ, 1912 Waughtown St., for more than 40 years. Mr. Sink retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with more than 42 years of service. He also served in World War II in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard, making three action-filled trips into the hot Atlantic/Mediterranean seas and one trip into the Pacific, where he was almost lost to a typhoon. A remembrance service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at First United Church of Christ, led by the Rev. Christa Warise. The graveside service with military honors will follow at Oaklawn cemetery in Waugh-town. The Sink family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Friday evening at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Parkway. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, memorials may be directed to the First United Church of Christ; Hospice & Palliative CareCenter; or the Christian charity of your choice. No one could have ever had a more loving, loyal, kind, caring, husband, father and friend than Raymond Sink has been! We ALL will miss him here on Earth and look forward to the time when we will be together again with Jesus Christ in Glory! Our family wishes to express our most sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful, gracious and capable people of Hospice. We also are very grateful to the Rev. Christa Warise, our church family, neighbors and friends for their wonderful support over the past year.

SLAWTER

DOBSON - Mrs. Mary Emma Lewis Slawter, 77, of 719 E. Atkins St., the widow of Ray Devern Slawter, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Slawter was born in Surry County June 7, 1924, the daughter of the late John Samuel and Ivory Marion Lewis. She retired from Spencer's Inc. after 37 years of service and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Jim Hewitt of Dobson; a granddaughter and spouse, Myra and Jaime Lewis of Dobson; a sister, Ivagene L. Cave of Dobson; a half-sister, Betty L. Payne of Boonville; three brothers, Victor Lewis of Dobson and Reuben Lewis and Delmar Lewis, both of Mount Airy; and five special nieces, Effie Marion of Mount Airy and Jessie Stewart, Lessie Brindle, Carol Bledsoe and Kathy Woodruff, all of Dobson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Slawter was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Leigh Slawter; three sons, Larry Slawter, Elmer Ray "Buster" Slawter and Steven "Steve" Slawter; a sister, Alma L. Atkins; a half-sister, Linda Lewis; a brother, Howard Lewis; and a half-brother, Friel Lewis. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery conducted by the Rev. Kermit Gray. SMITH

Hazel Laura Oliver Smith, beloved and courageous mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, at Vienna Village Retirement Home in Pfafftown. She was born to James Brush and Virginia Brown Oliver on Aug. 24, 1904, in Sparta, Ga. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1925 and received an additional degree in later years from High Point College. Her death was preceded by that of her husband, Charles Milton Smith, in 1965. She is survived by their only daughter, Nancy Josephine Smith Thomas and her husband, John Charles Thomas; and her grandchildren, Laura Melanie Thomas, named for her grandmother, and John Charles Thomas Jr., who both live in Philadelphia. "Mimi" maintained with her two grandchildren a continued dialogue and keen interest in their careers, goals and pursuit of happiness. She had a long, successful career as an elementary-school teacher in North Carolina and Florida. Her last position was at Johnson Street Elementary School in High Point where she taught with her good friend, Lola Smith Hodgin, for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, decorative arts, needlework, a variety of sports and visiting with her friends, particularly Mary King, Mamie Lucas and Ann Lore, in recent years. She was a staunch supporter of Wake Forest basketball and the ACC. She belonged to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in High Point before joining Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Thomas. A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Jack Yarborough will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield, NC 27053.

SPEAS

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. William Robert Speas of 6280 Riverbluff Farm Road passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Tobaccoville to the late Calvin and Minervia Speas. Mr. Speas was a U.S. Army veteran and a retiree of Wake Forest University. He joined Center Grove AME Zion Church at an early age. He leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Annie Mae Speas Porter and Mable Lee Speas, both of Tobaccoville; two brothers, Solomon Elwood Speas of Springwood Care Center and Joseph Bennett Speas of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Speas and Ruth Speas of Winston-Salem; devoted nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Center Grove AME Zion Church, Tobaccoville, with the Rev. George Erwin officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A 30-minute visitation will be held before the 2 p.m. service at the church. (Brown's)

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Jerry Ray Surratt, 55, died Thursday at his home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

THOMAS

KING - Mr. Ralph Pinckney Thomas died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. He was born April 25, 1927, in Stokes County to the late Squire Wesley and Mary Emma Jessup Thomas. Mr. Thomas retired from Roadway Express with 34 years of service. He was a volunteer with the American Red Cross of Atlanta for 12 years and received the 1996 J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award. Mr. Thomas was a deacon and an elder at Columbia Presbyterian Church of Decatur, Ga. Also, he was a Mason and served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ella Miller Thomas; a daughter, Pamela Thacker of Morristown, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Charles Matthew Thacker and wife Tina of White Pines, Tenn., and Thomas Christopher Thacker of Morristown, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Meghan, Fathe and Hope Thacker; and a sister, Virginia T. Long of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by a brother, John William Thomas; and a sister, Edith T. Gordon. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery of King conducted by the Rev. Bill Truitt. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

TUTTLE

LEXINGTON - Adele Yvonne Tuttle, 72, died Thursday. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Piedmont Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WALLACE

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Robert Bryan "Robbie" Wallace, 28, of Farmland Road died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blaise Baptist Church, with the Rev. Glenn Sellers and the Rev. Ken Furches officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Wallace was born July 12, 1973, in McComb, Miss., to Jerry H. Wallace of McComb Miss. and Verna Faye Myers Cox of Mocksville. He graduated from Winston-Salem State University and did practice teaching at Davie County High School. He was a member of Blaise Baptist Church, where he taught the junior-high boys' Sunday-school class and sang in the choir. He also performed solos at various church services and weddings. Survivors include his mother, Faye (Byron) Cox; his father, Jerry H. (Judy) Wallace; three sisters, Sondra, Patricia and Debbie; and three brothers, Keith, Howard and George. He was preceded in death by an older brother, Gordon.

WHITE

Mother and Evangelist Wilma Kennedy White, 86, formerly of 1613 Longview Drive, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 6, 1914, in Lancaster, S.C., to the late John and Hester Kennedy. She was a lifelong member of Kimberly Park Holiness Church. She was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was preceded in passing by her son, James Percell, and a daughter, Purlean Valentine. Surviving relatives to treasure and cherish her memory includes two sons, Luther Thomas (Helen) Davis and Gregory (Virginia) Davis; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Azelee Hickman of Philadelphia; and many other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Kimberly Park Holiness Church, with Pastor Helen Glenn officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. James W. Baity, 74, of Highway 801 N. died Wednesday at his home after several months of declining health. The body will remain at Eaton Funeral Home pending completion of arrangements.

ARARAT, Va. - Myrtle Mae Bowman, 76, died Tuesday at Forsyth Medical Center. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Howell Funeral Chapel, Mount Airy.

BREWER

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Nina Mae Jessup Brewer, 67, of 151 Snody Road, the widow of Ray Johnnie "R.J." Brewer, passed away Tues-day, Jan. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Brewer was born July 19, 1934, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Ora Wayne and Versie Mae East Jessup. She retired from Kentucky Derby Hosiery Co. and was a member of Indian Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Ray Brewer of King; seven sisters; six brothers; several nieces and nephews; and a very special sister-in-law, Nora Snody of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Dr. Teague Groce, Brother Don Collins and Chaplain Dan Salmon. Burial will be at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. BROWN

Mr. Wilson Harrison Brown, 89, of Heritage Woods Retirement Community in Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Stokes County to Henry Houston and Alice Stone Brown. Mr. Brown worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 40 years and was an avid golfer and gardener. He had a generous spirit and was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Army during World War II and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hannah Presson Brown. Surviving are two sons, Wilson Brown and wife Cheryle of Cary, and David Brown and wife Diane of Mooresville; five grandchildren, Christa Shoaf and her husband Scott, Sally Meredith Brown, Randy Wilson Brown, David Wilson Brown and Kelly Elizabeth Brown; a great-granddaughter, Lucy Caroline Shoaf; and a sister, Rebecca Day of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery by Minister Charles Belch. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. COZART

Mrs. Hazel Collins Cozart, 91, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Guilford Health Center in Greensboro. She was born April 28, 1910, in Iredell County to John Arch and Bessie Cartwright Collins. After retiring from Hanes Hosiery, she and her husband started Cozart's Flower Shop. She was very active in her church, Marvin United Methodist, and various civic and senior groups. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Collins and Ernest T. Collins, and a sister, Blanch Lakey. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles Dawson Cozart; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickey and Steve Kiger of Greensboro; a brother, John Collins of Fuquay-Varina; a sister, Helen Hager of Salisbury; a grandson, S. Brad Kiger of Breckenridge, Colo.; two granddaughters, Kelly Kiger Sapp of Huntersville and Jennifer B. Kiger of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Patti Suggs and the Rev. Joe Taylor. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
