GENTLE

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Katie Lee Gentle, 70, of Ridge Road left us Jan. 23, 2002, at Thomasville Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born May 6, 1931, in Surry County to the late John and Molly Childress Hutchens. Mrs. Gentle was retired from Dakota Cotton Mills and was a member of Lexington Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by 13 siblings and an infant son, Albert Daniel Gentle. Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Albert Lee Gentle of the home; three sons, Jerry and Deborah Gentle, Ronnie and Kim Gentle, and David Gentle, all of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Goldie Hargrave and Eliza Hunter, all of East Bend. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. R.B. Leviner, the Rev. Harold Fletcher and the Rev. Cashet. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

GREESON

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Mrs. Elma Jean Lore Greeson, 58, formerly of Zionville died Saturday. The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at Hampton Funeral Home, Boone.

GRIFFIN

Mrs. Ruby Preston Griffin, 92, of Winston-Salem died at Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday evening, Jan. 22, 2002. Mrs. Griffin had been in declining health for the past six years. A native of Forsyth County, she was born Sept. 4, 1909, to the late James L. and Sadie Eaton Preston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Harry Lee Griffin, who died Aug. 3, 1976; a sister, Lois Falcone, in 1997; and two brothers, Columbus J. Preston in 1992 and Fred G. Preston in 1987. Mrs. Griffin was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are three sons, Jerry W. Griffin and wife Ruby of Walnut Cove, and Jimmy L. Griffin and Norman G. Griffin and wife Sandra, all of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Brian L. Griffin of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Clarice Crissman of Durham and Margie Vaughn of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends before the service from noon to 2 p.m.

HAWKS

LOWGAP - Mrs. Betty Rae Edwards Hawks, 69, the wife of the late Eldridge Wiley Hawks, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

HOLHOUSER

Mr. Howard Eugene Holshouser Sr., 93, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Triad United Methodist Home. He was born Dec. 22, 1908, in Rowan County. Mr. Holshouser attended the Lenoir Rhyne College, Hickory, retired from the Railway Postal Service and was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Brandon Holshouser, on May 24, 1999. Surviving are his son, Howard E. Holshouser Jr. of Efland; a daughter, Toni H. Dew of Ber-muda Run; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Milford Hills United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Neill Shaw, minister, officiating. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Summersett Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Milford Hills United Methodist Church, 1630 Statesville Blvd. Salisbury, NC 28144; or Arbor Acres, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

HUNT

Mr. Reginald Van Erice Hunt, 52, of 660 Summer Place, the husband of Cathy Johnson Hunt, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. He was born to the late Frank Wilson and Ida Geneva Hunt on March 9, 1949. He was educated in local public schools and a graduate of Atkins High School. He was employed by Sara Lee Corp. for many years. He was a member of Macedonia TVPH Church of God Inc., where he served in several capacities. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Johnson Hunt; two daughters, Rejanique N. Everette (Brandon) and Reysheka Hunt; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; his godmother, Susie Henry; two godsisters, Janet Jackson Wilson (Clifton) and Elvira Caldwell; and many other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Macedonia TVPH Church of God Inc. with Apostle S.D. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. (Russell)

JOYCE

WALNUT COVE - Ms. Sarah Edith Joyce, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. She was born in Stokes County to the late Wallie and Rena Hawkins Joyce. She was a member of Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church and retired from Gem-Dandy in Madison. Pre-ceding her in death were four sisters and five brothers. She is survived by a sister, Leona Joyce Eaton of Walnut Cove; a sister-in-law, Elsie Joyce of Sandy Ridge; and several nieces and nephews. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder James Wilkins and Elder J.D. Belton officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of her sister, Mrs. Leona Eaton.

LEIGHTON

Betty Leighton, 82, of 1007 Paschal Drive died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 4, 1919, in Greenfield, Ind., the only child of Herbert C and Dolly Smock. After graduation from high school, she took business courses and went to work as a secretary in a publishing company in Indianapolis. When the company moved to Greenville, S.C., Betty was asked to move with it, and she did. Soon afterward she met Jim Leighton, the tennis coach at Presbyterian College, and they were married March 25, 1951. In 1953, their only child, Jeff, was born. The Leightons made their home in Clinton during the school year and in summers they traveled to West Virginia and Connecticut where Coach Leighton was a club pro. In 1962 they moved to Winston-Salem, where Jim became the tennis pro at Old Town Country Club and the tennis coach at Wake Forest University. In the 1970s, Betty became the principal reviewer of contemporary fiction for the Winston-Salem Journal, and for the next 30 years her reviews were regular features of the book page. In 1999, Wildwood Press of Winston-Salem published a selection of more than 100 of these reviews in Books Enough & Time. In recent years, Betty finished a collection of stories about her childhood called Indiana Album. In addition to her career as a book reviewer, Betty was a founding editor with Emily Wilson and Isabel Zuber of Jackpine Press, which published fine books of poetry in the 1960s and '70s. As an editor, she made friends with writers and continued to correspond with them over many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kim DeCoste Leighton, an independent filmmaker living in Raleigh; a granddaughter, Emily Sussman Beyts, living in London, England, with her husband, Hugo Beyts; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Cameron of Washington, D.C. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Davis Chapel of Wake Forest University. The family will receive friends afterward at 1007 Paschal Drive on the Wake Forest campus. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is handling funeral arrangements. The family asks that those wishing to make gifts in Betty's memory, make them to the charities of their choice.

NIEMAN

Mr. John F. Nieman Sr., 82, of 220 Lamplighter Circle passed away Jan. 18, 2002, at The Oaks at Forsyth. John was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Baldwin, Long Island, N.Y., to John and Marie K. Nieman. He graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y., and from Villanova University in Philadelphia, where he played varsity football. Immediately after graduation, he began Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Marines, having enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor. He commanded a battalion of rocket launchers and saw action in Guadalcanal, Okinawa and Iowa Jima. He left the service with the rank of major. He worked for Johnson's Wax in Washington, D.C., Detroit and Atlanta, where he was southeastern district sales manager. He then founded the Nieman Co., a janitorial supply company, in Winston-Salem in 1964. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Larkin Nieman; three children, John F. Nieman Jr. and wife Martha Massie of Greensboro, Lisa Marie Nieman (Warren Durham) of Austin, Texas, and William Larkin Nieman (Terri, Aaron and Zachary Silver) of Greensboro; and a grandchild, Jeffrey Larkin Nieman of Chapel Hill. The Rev. Cecil W. Tice and the Rev. Christopher Roux will celebrate a memorial Mass at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at St. Leo the Great, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. Research Foundation, 1401-B Old Mill Circle, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family will receive friends after the Mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mrs. Bertha Holloway Powell passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Washington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the 10th Street Baptist Church, NW, Washington. Locally, she is survived by a sister, Nora Holloway Scales; a brother, John Holloway; and a niece, Mitzi S. Howell (Robert Sr.), all of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. LEXINGTON -Mrs. Mary Ann Praytor, 73, the wife of the late Reid Praytor, died Wednesday at Thomasville Medical Center. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Bright Light Freewill Baptist Church. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHEEK

ADVANCE - Mrs. Clarice Lineberry Sheek, 79, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home. She was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Raleigh County, W.Va., to Bert and Ida Duncan Lineberry. Mrs. Sheek was preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, Robert "Bobby" Sheek of the home; a daughter, Ms. Peggy Webb Vido of Charlotte; and a sister, Lattrice Davis of Rural Hall. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. LEXINGTON - Mrs. Gracie Sowers Sink, 79, of Partridge Lane died Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m. in Arbor Acres Triad United Methodist Home in Winston-Salem after nine years of declining health. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. John Ferree and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown. Mrs. Sink was born Jan.11, 1923, in Davidson County to James Columbus Sowers and Helen Craver Sowers. After graduating from Peace College in 1941, she received an AB degree from Meredith College in 1943, taught school in Lexington City Schools and also taught kindergarten at First United Methodist Church. A member of First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Spruill Coed Class, The Charity League, the Richard Walser Book Club and Lexington Garden Club. Her sister Louise Sowers preceded her in death. Surviving are her husband, Archie McCoy Sink of the home; a son, Dr. James David Sink of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Helen (Teenie) Sink Bingham of Lexington; six grandchildren, Jaye Elizabeth Bingham of Raleigh, James Hugh Bingham Jr. of Charlotte, James David Sink Jr. of Los Angeles, Emily Grace Sink of Chapel Hill, William Townsend McCoy Sink of Winston-Salem and Mary Kathryn Sink of Chapel Hill; and two sisters, Fannie Sowers Green of Lexington and Jimmie Blue Sowers Graeber of Gastonia. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

LEXINGTON - Mr. Lester Taylor Snyder, 76, the husband of the late Doris Auman Snyder, died Wednesday at Thomasville Medical Center. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.

STEED

LEXINGTON - Mr. Bobby Lee Steed, 71, died Tuesday at Brian Center Nursing Home. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.

WILLIAMS

Mrs. Treva C. Williams, 89, formerly of 1240 North Jackson Ave., Winston-Salem, passed away Jan. 20, 2002, at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after months of illness. She was born April 26, 1912, in High Point. Treva was the daughter of Virtle and Myrtle Charles. She was the loving mother of Shirley A. Little of Detroit, Mich., and Timothy (Devora) Coleman of Winston-Salem. Two sons preceded her in death: Johnnie Williams Jr. and Clarence A. Williams. Treva graduated from Florence High School and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was a faithful member of Second Calvary Baptist Church and she loved the Lord. In addition to her children, she will be missed by her sisters, Susan Crumpton of Detroit, Mich., and Mabel (James) Gibson of High Point; her 15 grandchildren; four great grand-children; two great-great-grand-children; a special friend, Claude Witherspoon; and a host of nieces, nephews and other friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Second Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Donald Stowe Sr. officiating. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will also meet with friends Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery.

LEXINGTON - Mr. Steve D. Abrams, 44, died Friday afternoon at his home after an illness of 15 months. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Burial will be at the Lexington City cemetery.

ALLEN

HOPE MILLS - Mrs. Pamela Huffman, 39, a former resident of Vilas, died Wednesday night in Fayetteville. A private graveside service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Adams cemetery in Vilas. Memorial service is 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Brushy Fork Baptist Church in Vilas. Hampton in Boone is in charge.
