BROWN

WILKESBORO - Mr. Elijah Hampton "Hamp" Brown, 98, of Stratford Road, Wilkesboro died Friday at his home. Funeral services will held Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Center Baptist Church with the Rev. John T. Vannoy III and the Rev. Mace Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Brown was born Oct. 20, 1903, in Wilkes County to Ambrose and Francis Bingham Brown. He was retired from Forest Furniture. Mr. Brown served in the United States Army during World War II. Seven sisters, Cora Reavis, Belle Lovette, Florence Houck, Alice Key, Ila Adams, Wilma Adams, Leila Warren and a brother, Fred Brown preceded him in death. Surviving are two nieces, Peggy Ording of Wilkesboro, Sue Vannoy of North Wilkesboro; five half sisters, Ruth Holbrook of Charlotte, Imogene Collins of Winston-Salem, Ivey Smith, Cletus Falkenberry, Irene Moose all of Kannapolis; two half-brothers, Ransom Brown of Davidson, Ambrose Brown Jr. both of Kannapolis. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Sunday night from 6:30 to 8:30. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Center Baptist Church Building Fund, 205 Center Baptist Church Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

COLES

BANNER ELK - Charles Elbert Coles, 65, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Clarissa Hill cemetery in Boone.

CRUTCHFIELD

Mrs. Cynthia E. Crutchfield, 42, of 136 Sycamore Circle passed away on Feb. 1, 2002, at her residence. She was born on July 21, 1959, to the late Gwendolyn Farrow Griffin and James L. Farrow Sr. She was a graduate of the WS/FC school system and a member of Saint Stephens Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Crutchfield was married to Mr. Wayne Crutchfield and to this union were born two daughters, Sharon Annette and Elaine Denise Crutchfield. Other survivors include a stepmother, Linda Farrow; a granddaughter, Keeshauna Annette Sturdivant; a brother, J. Leon (Audrey) Farrow Jr.; maternal grandmother, Azalee Bines; grandparents-in-law, James (Julia) Crutchfield; best friends, Daphine Johnson and Stephanie Bradley; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Cynthia E. Crutchfield will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Saint Stephens Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.R. Samuels, officiating. Family visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. (Brown's)

DAVENPORT

Marsha Jo Ann Davenport, beloved daughter of Bernice and James Davenport, died suddenly Wednesday morning, Jan. 30, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 27, 1951, and attended the Catholic schools of Winston-Salem. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her master's degree from Georgia State University. She was a substance-abuse counselor in Atlanta, Ga., Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, Sylva and Lewisburg, W.Va. Her last position was at Step-One, Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Monday, Feb. 4, at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church with Dr. James M. Sloan officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 to 12 noon at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

DAVILA

Dawnna "Dee" Myers Davila, 53, of 6117 University Parkway died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Dee was very caring, always taking care of others and putting herself last. She was born in Winston-Salem on Oct. 28, 1948, to Harvey and Floy Lee Johnson Darnell. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie K. Morgan and husband, Bill; her two sons: Brian N. Davila and Cody N. Davila; her two grandchildren: Chad T. Kearney and Brooke T. Kearney; her Daddy, Harold R. Gardner; her brother, Nathan B. Gardner and wife, Glenda; her nephews: Jason and Adam Gardner; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, including one special cousin and lifelong friend, Jan Stonestreet. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with Pastor Jonathan Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Carecenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

DILLARD

LEXINGTON - Ms. Joyce R. Dillard, 67, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at 12:30 a.m. at her home after declining health of 11 years. Graveside service to held Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Burial will take place at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

GALLMAN

Mrs. Dorothy Myrick Gallman, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Guilford County to William and Etta Myrick. Mrs. Gallman was manager of The Stork Center for 13 years. Preceding Mrs. Gallman in death was her husband, Mr. James Boyd Gallman. Surviving is a daughter, Judy Wilhelm of Winston-Salem, a grandson, Timothy Edward Wilhelm; two sisters, Nessie Strader and Mary Osborne of Greensboro; a brother, John Myrick of Florida. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Bill Berry officiating. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem N.C 27103. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek).

HICKS

KING - Freya Gay Johnson Hicks, 55, of Troutman, died unexpectedly at her home, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. She was born March 4, 1946, in Forysth County to Paul Thomas Hohnson Jr. and Rachel Lawson Johnson. She was preceded in death by her father. Surviving are her husband, Alan Hicks of the home; a son, Fletcher Alan (Theresa) Hicks of Valdese; a daughter, April Leigh (Rick) Branton of Troutman; four grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Hicks of Valdese, and Taylor and Marlin Branton of Troutman; her mother, Rachel Lawson Johnson of King; a sister, Patti (Raeford) Kiser of King; a half-brother, Paul Thomas Johnson III of Dalton, Ga.; stepmother, Georgia Johnson of Advance; father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Olan Hicks of King; several aunts and uncles. Memorial services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 7 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in King. Dr. John Wren will officiate. Visitation will follow in church fellowship hall after the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

HOLLINGSWORTH

PINEHURST - Bessie Walker Hollingsworth, 84, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Manorhouse Assisted Living in Pinehurst. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. L.H. Hollingsworth, a Baptist minister and former chaplain of Wake Forest University. Mrs. Hollingsworth was born Dec. 4, 1917, to the late I.W. and Lula C. Walker of Spindale. She received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Appalachian State University in Boone. For many years, she worked as a librarian in the Winston-Salem and High Point public schools and Wake Forest University. In her retirement, Mrs. Hollingsworth dedicated her time and talents to the Literacy Movement in the Winston-Salem area. She and her dear friend, Marguerite Yearns, who preceded her in death, were strong and influential advocates of literacy programs for adults and children. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy H. Brown and her husband James C. Amundson of Raleigh, and her grandchildren, Victor Brown and Deanna Brown Butler and her husband Kevin Butler, and great-grandson, Kasey Butler; Patricia Holshouser and her husband James E. Holsouser Jr. of Southern Pines and her granddaughter, Ginny Mills and her husband John Mills, and great-granddaughters Holly Mills and Maggie Mills; and Linda H. Simms and her husband Thomas G. Simms of Winston-Salem and her grandchildren, Jeff Simms and Amy Simms; four sisters, Edna Wilson and Nettie Blanton, both of Spindale, Geneva Roberson of Forest City and Maggie Thomas of Anderson, S.C.; and two brothers, Gordon Walker of Burlington and Ivy Walker of Spindale. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2002, in the Davis Chapel on the Wake Forest University Campus in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wake Forest Baptist Church Tutoring Program, East Winston Primary School, 1612 E. 14th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27105; or to Wake Forest University Scholarship Program, P.O. HOLMES

Mrs. Willie Mae Margaret Holmes of 2810-A Millbrook Drive passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at her residence. She was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Rural Hall, to the late Dollie Daisie and Henry Wesley Shelf. She was a member of Saint John CME Church and was a former member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, where she served on the usher board. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Worthy. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Holmes Sr. of the home; two sons, Joseph Holmes Jr. of Winston-Salem, and Benjamin F. Holmes of Whiteville; three daughters, Donzella Shirleen Holmes, the Rev. Wanda (Nathaniel) Williams Jr., and Debra E. Holmes all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Weathers of Chelteham, Minn., and Ruth C. Fulwiley of Tacoma Park, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 12 p.m. from the Saint John CME Church, with the Rev. Bobby R. Best officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 11:30 to noon Monday at the church. (Russell)

LEWIS

Mr. Walter C. Lewis, 87, died Feb. 1, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long illness. He was born May 2, 1914, in Allegheny Co., Pa., to Joseph and Alice Sarah Lehman Lewis. He was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. He was retired as a Railroad Trainman with the Monongahela Connecting Railroad in Pittsburgh. Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice E. Hunter Lewis of the home; a daughter, Joan Lewis Pike and husband, August of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters, Elizabeth P. Shatterly and husband, Jeffrey of Autryville; Cynthia P. Owens and husband, William Landis Owens II, of Hillsborough, and Allison C. Pike of Durham, two great grandchildren, Jillian Brielle Owens and William Alexander Owens; a brother, Donald C. Lewis and wife, Carrie of Henderson, Ky.; many nieces and nephews and their families. He was a member of the Kiwanis Golden K in Dunedin, Fla., and East Liberty Lodge, F. & A. M. in Pittsburgh, Pa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in the Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Symanski officiating. Entombment will follow. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. TODD - Sofrona Elizabeth Proffit Miller, 83, of 3998 Meat Camp Road, died Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Proffit's Grove Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MORETZ

BOONE - Mr. Avery H. Moretz, 85, died Friday at Watauga Medical Center. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethelview Methodist Church in Boone. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn cemetery. Hampton in Boone is in charge.

OVERBY

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Alma McMickle Overby, 91, widow of Mr. Matt Overby, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Skyline Memory Gardens. Moody Funeral Home is serving the Overby family.

PRICE

BOILING SPRINGS - Bobby Ray Price, 53, a former resident of High Point, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his home in Boiling Springs. Bobby was born in High Point, Feb. 10, 1948, a son of Lewis Alton and Pauline Smith Price. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps as a Corporal E-4 AT Assault Man. During his tour of duty, he received the Purple Heart with two stars as well as numerous other awards. Prior to his disability resulting from exposure to Agent Orange, he was an engineer of the HPT&D Railroad and also worked at High Point Bank & Trust. He was a member of the Churchtown Church of God in Boiling Springs, the VFW, the America Legion, the Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association, High Lonesome Strings, and the Off the Wall Dulcimer Society. Bobby was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Sandra Kay Price. Bobby was a friend to many and he will be deeply missed by his family. Surviving are his loving wife and musical partner, Ginny Ried-Price of the home; two sons, Kevin Price of Rural Hall, and Danny Price of Thomasville; a daughter, Tababtha Gillimore of Thomasville; a stepdaughter, Michaela L. Anderson of the home; two sisters, Irene Hilliard and her husband, Earl, of Greensboro, and Melba Brendle and her husband, Rod, of High Point; his mother, Pauline Price Poole and stepfather, Melvin, of Archdale; four brothers, Leyon Price and his wife, Linda, of High Point, Junior Price and his wife, Sandee, of Mount Gilead, Shelton Price and his wife, Janet, of Trinity, and Pastor Roger Price and his wife, LeVerne, of Trinity; four grandchildren, Brittany, Brandy, and Ryan Gallimore and Chase Tyler Price; aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in High Point by the Rev. Roger Carmichel. Burial with military honors will follow in Floral Garden Park cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at other times at the home of his mother, 409 Playground Road, Archdale. Memorials may be directed to the Churchtown Church of God, 351 Old Stone House Road South, Boiling Springs, Pa. 17007 or to a fund for his medical expenses, Bobby Price Fund, P.O. ROGERS

Mrs. Rosa Crews Rogers, 95, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born Oct. 3, 1906, in Forsyth County to Henry and Ella Pegg Crews. Mrs. Rogers attended Salem College and was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church. Mrs. Rogers and husband Alvin were owner and operator of Alvin G. Rogers Jewelry on Main Street for a number of years. Preceding Mrs. Rogers in death was her husband, Mr. Alvin G. Rogers; four sisters, Laura C. Watts, Lydia C. Thomas, Neva C. King, Minnie Crews; three brothers, Roy Crews, Thomas Crews, O.L. "Tip" Crews. Surviving are two special nieces, Peggy Gimmon of Winston-Salem and Mary Butler of Kernersville and a number of other nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Boles officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Peggy Gimmon, 3108 Burkemill Court, Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Kate B. SHEETS

KING - Mr. John Douglas Sheets, 56, died Friday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Ronnie Baity and the Rev. Rodney Matthews. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. Mr. Sheets was born in Hampton, Va., April, 26, 1945, son of John C. and Mary Glidewell Sheets. He lived most of his life in Winston-Salem and attended New Life Church. Surviving are his wife, Billie Jean Hutchens Sheets of the home; a sister, Frances Charles and her husband, Richard; a brother, Neil Sheets and his wife, Betty; and a number of nieces and nephews.
