BOONE - Miss Virginia Louise Taylor, 79, died Friday at her home. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis. Burial will follow in Taylor-Mast cemetery. Hampton in Boone is in charge.

WEAVER

ARARAT, Va. - Mrs. Phyllis Ann Robertson Weaver, 42, of 2550 Wards Gap Road died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at her home. There will be a memorial service at a later date. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of her parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Saint Paul School Student Programs, Cana, VA 24317 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy is serving the Weaver family.

WELBORN

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Inez Hinson Welborn, 94, formerly of Hamptonville, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Willowbrook Healthcare Center. Inez Welborn was born May 5, 1907, in Yadkin County to Marion and Nancy Sims Hinson. She was a graduate of Yadkinville High School class of 1929 and was the former owner and operator of Welborn's Snack Bar and Motel. Inez was a devoted mother and homemaker and was a faithful charter member of the West Yadkin Baptist Church. She was a longtime member of the Yadkin County Home Demonstration Club and first president of the West Yadkin Chapter. Inez was an active member of the West Yadkin Quilting Club and active in and supportive of the Yadkin County Senior Center and a active member of VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Branon, Leona Myers and Collie Hinson; two brothers, Claude Hinson and Weaver Hinson. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Nancy Wagoner and husband Larry of Hamptonville, Mrs. Jo Dorsett and husband Tommy of Yadkinville, Mrs. Nell Vickers and husband Larry of Hamptonville and Mrs. Ann Nicks and husband Ricky of Clemmons; two sons, Mr. Marion Welborn and wife Jewell and Mr. Watt Welborn and wife Blanche, all of Boonville; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Beulah Saunders of Harmony. The funeral service for Mrs. Welborn will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at West Yadkin Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Bell and the Rev. Kenny Gooden. Mrs. Welborn will lie in state from 3 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery, Hamptonville. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. WINEBARGER

RURAL HALL- Mr. Carl Eugene "Gene" Winebarger, 67, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Sept. 23, 1934, in Forsyth County to the late Colen M. and Sallie Clinard Winebarger. Mr. Winebarger was an avid golfer and loved to fish. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Pat Winebarger of the home; a brother, Randall Winebarger and wife Juanita of Stanleyville; a sister, Doris Saylor and husband Jack of Wilson; several dear nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A committal service will be Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Hank Keating in Crestview Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alan Wright and the Rev. Jason Harvey officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. YOUNTS

Mr. Jasper Allen Younts, 80, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Jan. 31, 1922, in Davidson County to Allen and Sally Craver Younts. He was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church and a charter member of Arcadia Lions Club. Mr. Younts was instrumental in forming Davidson Water, Inc. which he managed for 18 years, retiring in 1987. He was one of the founders and the first President of National Rural Water Association; a founder, past president and currently the treasurer of the N.C. Rural Water Association. Mr. Younts was preceded in death by a son, Gray Younts; a brother, Fleet Younts; and two sisters, Perry Byerly and Irene Miller. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mozelle Foltz Younts of the home; a daughter, Linda Y. Everhart and husband Steve of Lexington; four grandchildren, David Everhart and wife Lisa, Doug Everhart and wife Susan, Danny Everhart and wife Julie and Angela Younts. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Brittany, Rebecca, Emily, Michael, Brad, Allie and Stephen Everhart; two brothers, Worth Younts, Zan Younts; four sisters, Laura Perryman, Rose Brock, Lucy Schaeffer and Amy Jo Hartman. A graveside service will be Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard, with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of Linda Everhart. BLALOCK

Mr. Lee Roy "Pete" Blalock Jr., 66, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Forsyth County to Lee Roy Blalock Sr. and Frances Barringer Blalock. Mr. Blalock was a graduate of Hanes High School and after high school, he followed in his father's footsteps and was in the produce business from the age of 5. In 1976 he founded Forest Hill Curb Market and over the next 26 years he, his wife and son built it into a prosperous business. Mr. Blalock was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends. He also enjoyed his daily walks, gardening and buying produce to sell at the curb market. His smile and optimism will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Nancy Stanley and Linda Blalock. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Shelby Troutt Blalock of the home; a son, Dennis Blalock and wife Genia of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Matthew Pete Blalock and Jessica Blalock; three brothers, Adam Blalock and Jimmy Blalock, both of Winston-Salem, and Robbie Blalock of Lewisville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with pastor John Brown of Courtney Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

BULLINS

DANBURY - Mr. Ralph Berkley Bullins, 86, of 1143 Jewel Road, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County on Aug. 6, 1915, son of the late Johnny and Bessie Bennett Bullins. He was a self-employed building contractor and retired maintenance supervisor with Stokes County school system. He was a member of Northview Primitive Baptist Church, a member of Lawsonville Fire Department for 30 years, and a member of the Lawsonville Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife, Margie Hall Bullins of the home; a foster daughter, Mrs. Delmar (Virginia) Mabe of Walnut Cove; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Betty Moore; two stepsons, Clyde Hall and Roger Hall, all of Walnut Cove; a sister, Mrs. Clarice Tucker of Danbury; a brother, Carlis Bullins of Danbury; nine stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, with elder Milton Gunter officiating. Burial will be at Northview Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home and other times at the home. THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Mary Leora Trotter Deese, 68, the wife of the late Mickey Eugene Deese Sr., died Tuesday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel.

LANSING - Mr. Roy Oscar Eldreth, 68, the husband of Ruth Church Eldreth, died Monday. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CLEMMONS - Mr. Giovanni Fontana, 87, the husband of Caterina Pupatello, died Monday at his home. The body has been sent to Brugger Funeral Home in Erie, Pa., for services. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

FOSTER

Clarence James "C.J." Foster Jr., 75, died unexpectedly at his home Feb. 2, 2002. Mr. Foster was born Feb. 6, 1926, to the late Clarence and Helen Foster. He was a World War II veteran, a member of VFW Post 6367, American Legion Post 55, and AMVETS 777. Survivors include his wife, Betty T. Foster; five children; three stepsons; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. this evening at VFW Post 6367, 4129 S. Main St. The family will receive friends following the service. FOY

Carol Albert Foy was born April 7, 1975, in Shillington, Pa. She died Feb. 3, 2002. Although she died at a very young age, Carol lived her life to the fullest. She cared deeply, loved freely, and gave of herself constantly. Carol graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington, Pa., and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. In her short time with us, Carol lived in San Francisco, traveled to Africa on a mission trip, twice drove across the United States and parachuted from an airplane. In October of last year, she was married to the man of her dreams, Will Foy. Carol worked for Second harvest Food Bank of NW N.C., Coalition for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and most recently, as a resident counselor at the Children's Home in Winston-Salem. She was very involved with her church, Sharon United Methodist Church and passionately dedicated to her family and friends. Carol is survived by her husband, William Foy; her parents, the Rev. Thomas and Billie Albert; two sisters, Shannon Williams (Mike) and Amanda Johnson (Jeremy); grandmothers, Mrs. J.W. Norman and Mrs. Thomas Albert; aunts, Judy Wolfe (Robb), June Witty (Jimmy); and an uncle, David Norman (Jane). The family will receive friends at Vogler's Funeral Home in Clemmons from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. GAITHER

Mrs. Sarah Cowan Gaither, 77, of 3990 Shamel St., died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after an extended illness. She was born in Rowan County on March 9, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Elvert Cowan Sr. and Zoreather Turner Cowan. She was married to Roy Gaither, who preceded her in death. A brother, Arthur Cowan, also preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Unity High School and at an early age joined Knox Grove Baptist Church in Cleveland. Before her retirement in 1990, she was employed by the Woolworth Co. for a number of years. Survivors include three sons, Leroy Gaither (Evetta), of Charlotte, Melvin C. Gaither (Ethel), of Winston-Salem and Ronnie E. Gaither of Alabama; a daughter, Vivian G. Learson, of Statesville; two brothers, Elvert Cowan Jr. (Tetitha), of Troutman and Joseph M. Cowan (Margretta) of Statesville; four sisters, Estelle C. Rouse (Pilgrim), of Philadelphia, Helen Gaither, of Baltimore, Mildred Hill, of Dayton, Ohio, and Evelyn Pearson (George) of Cleveland, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Mary B. Bigham Memorial Chapel of Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Elder Jerry Powell will officiate and burial will follow at Knox Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Cleveland, N.C. Members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, 30 minutes before the funeral service, but will assemble at the residence of a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Margretta Cowan, 328 Garfield St., Statesville, at other times. GIDDERON

Mrs. Blanche A. Myers Gidderon, of 3450 Old Greensboro Road, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. She was born March 2, 1912, in Wadesboro to Benjamin and Lizzie Myers. She was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Shouse & Garner Restaurant and Goodwill Industries before her retirement. She was educated in Wadesboro and had lived in Winston-Salem for about 75 years. Celebrating her homegoing are six nieces; two nephews; a host of great-nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Blanche Gidderon will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Saints Home United Methodist Church, with pastor John F. Epps officiating. Family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will meet at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home at noon. (Clark S. Brown & Sons)

HAIRFIELD

MORGANTON - Edward Matthew Hairfield Jr., 90, of N. Green St., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. Born Aug. 8, 1911, in Mecklenburg County, Va., he was a son of the late Edward M. Hairfield Sr. and Elizabeth Taylor Hairfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Tessiephine Harper Hairfield; a daughter, Betsy Martin Hairfield Crew; brothers, Dr. Beverly Hairfield and James Hairfield; and a sister, Elizabeth Hairfield Shaffer. After graduating from Wake Forest College Law School in 1932, he began his law career with his father in Morganton in 1933. He held several governmental appointments from 1942 to 1949 in Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta. He returned to private law practice in Morganton and later served as solicitor of Burke County Criminal Court and as a judge in 1951. He retired in 1991. Mr. Hairfield was a member of the Morganton Lions Club for over 55 years, where he held the office of president. He was a life member of the Moose Lodge, the Elks, and was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morganton. Mr. Hairfield is survived by his wife, Zennie Benton Hairfield; sons, Edward M. Hairfield III and his wife Barbee of Morganton, and Allen Hairfield and his wife, Beverly, of Winston-Salem; brothers, Joe Hairfield, and John C. Hairfield, both of Morganton, and Dr. Ted V. Hairfield of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, John Crew of Washington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Bland Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill cemetery with Masonic rites conducted by members of Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge No. 217. THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Louemma Harris Hazelwood, 74, the wife of the late Albert Holbert Hazelwood, died Tuesday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel.

LINWOOD - Effie Faye Combs Holbrook, 62, the wife of John Page Holbrook, died Monday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JONES

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Viola Holman Jones, 91, of 1565 Union Cross Road died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 17, 1910, in Watauga County, a daughter of William Walter and Grace Graham Holman. Mrs. Jones was an avid antique collector, and she enjoyed flower gardening and lawn work. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 44 years of service and was a member of Glennview Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Larry Dean Holman Sr. of Kernersville; two stepsons, R.S. Jones Jr. "Bill", and Leonard Gray Jones "Bob"; two sisters, Treva H. Boyles of Kernersville, and Willa Grey Hayes of Winston-Salem; two brothers, William Reeves Holman of Mountain City, Tenn., and Clifton Worth Holman of Edgewood, Md.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville, by elder E.W. Hooven. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Richard Thomas Long, 80, of Kernersville Road died Feb. 5, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Forsyth County Dec. 1, 1921, to Charles York Long and Ina Victoria Brooks Long. Mr. Long was formerly employed by Gant Oil Co. and he was retired from the Winston-Salem Transit Authority. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Josephine Jones Long of the home; four stepdaughters, Brenda Holloway of Rural Hall, Ann Rich and her husband Philip of Nashville, Tenn., Lynn Newell and her husband Hal of Winston-Salem, and Joan Southern of Rural Hall; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and a sister, Louise Long Hartman of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Randy Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. MAJOR

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Funeral services for Sara Bell Major, 95, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be directed to the music ministry at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 2501 Heyward St., Columbia, SC 29205, or to the library of Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg, S.C. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Major, the wife of the late James Berry Major, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg, S.C. Born in Charlotte Sept. 24, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Waldine Bell. She graduated from Salem College in 1927, with a bachelor's degree in English, received an additional degree, a B.A. in music in 1928, and had further training in choral direction under Paul Peterson in Winston-Salem. She then launched a lifetime of service as an educator and musician. Mrs. Major first taught in the Charlotte public schools, then taught kindergarten at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, and was the director of the preschool at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church in Columbia. For decades she ministered to both children and adults through music, serving as organist at Hawthorne Road United Methodist Church in Charlotte and for over 25 years, as organist and minister of music at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia. As a piano teacher for over 50 years, she introduced hundreds of children to their own musical talent. She is survived by her son, Ernest Jackson Major of Chapin, S.C.; a daughter, Dean Major Clifford of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Gwen M. Major; a son-in-law, Fred R. Clifford; six grandchildren, Jimmy Major of Columbia, Robert Major of Hendersonville, Hope Clifford San Filippo of Advance, Roy Clifford of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, Jay Clifford of Charleston, and Cary Clifford of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, John and Katie San Filippo; two grandsons-in-law, Anthony San Filippo and Jonathan Milner; and a granddaughter-in-law, Ellen Joy Major.

MARTIN

KING - Ruth Marie Kirby Martin, 91, of Westview Drive died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002. She was born Sept. 9, 1910, in Stokes County to John and Rebecca Caudle Kirby. Preceding her in death was a daughter, Norma Louise Martin; a son, Bobby Lee Martin; six sisters; and three brothers. Surviving are her husband, Harry Lee Martin of the home; a daughter, Judy (Lonnie) Oakley of Germanton; a son, John Martin of King and a daughter-in-law, Patsy Craddock Martin of King; three grandchildren, Clinton (Cindy) Martin, Keith (Wendy) Martin, and Rochelle (Jeff) Tuttle; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Tim (Monica) Oakley, David Oakley Jr., and Cecelia Oakley; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Austin and Lukas Martin, Colten and Eric Tuttle; five great-stepgrandchildren, Heather, Brandon, Kendhal, Zhane and David Oakley III. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Pastor Daniel Salmon and the Rev. Mark Mashburn OSL will officiate. Burial will follow at Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. MOTSINGER

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Colon Harden Motsinger, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Motsinger was born July 8, 1921, in Forsyth County, a son of the late William and Fallie May Cameron Motsinger. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from Gilbarco with 10 years of service. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Motsinger of the home; four sons, Steven Harden and wife Kathy Motsinger, Roger Dale and wife Debbie Motsinger, Anthony Wade and wife Gricelda Motsinger, all of Kernersville, and Stanley Eugene Motsinger of Greensboro; a sister, Louise Martin of Walkertown; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Roberson. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
