MENTOR, Ohio - Renee Berger Rossi, 85, formerly of Columbus, Euclid and Little Italy, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Homestead I in Painesville, Ohio. She was born March 9, 1916, in Montmartre, France. She worked as a secretary for Reliance Electric in Euclid for 25 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Roberts Church in Euclid. Survivors include her sons, Richard (Catherine) Rossi of Painesville, and Daniel (Sarah) Rossi of Walkertown; five grandchildren, Amy (Irvin) Reinhart, Daniel (Latisha) Rossi, Benjamin (Jacquelyn) Rossi, Jennifer and Joanna Rossi; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Reinhart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Rossi; a granddaughter, Catherine Renee Rossi; parents, Paul and Blanche Berger; and sisters, Nanette Berger and Paulette Caserto. Funeral Mass will at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Twp, OH 44060. Interment will follow at Mentor cemetery, Mentor. SLATE
MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Grace Virginia Collins Slate, 99, the widow of Mr. Cecil A. Slate, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Central Continuing Care. Mrs. Slate was born in Patrick County, June 24, 1902, to the late William Tom and Texas Savannah Martin Collins. She was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church and was a loving homemaker. Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mildred S. Glenn of Mount Airy, Betty S. and Jake Hiatt of Mount Airy, Linda S. and Cory Novak of Barrington, Ill., Brenda S. and William M. Ogburn of Mooresville; two daughters-in-law, Billie McGee Slate of Mount Airy, and Mollie C. Slate of Sanford; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lillie S. Collins of High Point. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by two sons, Graham W. Slate and Bruce A. Slate; eight sisters; and a brother. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Byerly. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. SALISBURY - Mr. Howard Dwain Solomon, 43, of 903 E. Lafayette St., died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his home. He was born April 27, 1948, in Forsyth County to Rosa Carson Solomon and Vardell Solomon. He was educated at Salisbury High School and was a cook at Beatties Restaurant. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include a son, Howard Hill, of East Spencer; a daughter, Sherri Hill, of East Spencer; his father, Vardell Solomon, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Erwin Solomon, of Reidsville; three sisters, Sandra Oglesby and Janice Solomon, both of Salisbury, and Gina Solomon of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Love Christian Center, East Spencer, with Dr. Ronald W. Hash officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery, Salisbury. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Love Christian Center, East Spencer. Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Earline Virginia Spillman, 72, of Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. She was born to the late Lee Grant and Lola Hampton Wilson on July 12, 1929, in Forsyth County. She was a member of the Rock of Revelations Church. Earline was a loving mother and grandmother. She was always caring of others, a dedicated worker, and she will be greatly missed. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Morrison, and her husband, Charles, Ms. Deborah Gore, Ms. Sandra Spillman and Ms. Robin Brooks; a son, Mr. Kenneth Spillman; 11 grandchildren, Antonio Spillman, Latoya Spillman, Stephanie Whitney, Lakisha Morrison, Rommel Morrison, Marlon Morrison, Latasha Spillman, Andre Gore, Willie Gore Jr., Brandon Spillman, and Tiffany Robinson; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah Moore, and Inez Wilson; and a brother, Nathaniel Wilson. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Vogler and Son's Reynolda Road Chapel. Interment will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Bobby Wilson will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
TAYLOR
CLEMMONS - William Joseph Taylor, 39, of 3725 Harper Road, departed this life Saturday, Feb. 2 at Hospice of Winston-Salem. Mr. Taylor is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Sandra T. Wheeler of Alexandria, Va., Patricia T. Greene of Winston-Salem, Susan T. Ellingson of Woodstock, Va., Donald T. Taylor Jr. of Clemmons, and Kirk P. Taylor of Winston-Salem; a maternal aunt, Elizabeth W. Johnson of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Holy Family Catholic Church on Kinnamon Road in Clemmons at 2:30 p.m. after a family Rosary and before Mass at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. There will be no graveside service. In lieu of flowers, all memorials should be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Winston-Salem or to the local Cancer Services Inc.

KING - Lillie Mae Todd Thompson, 67, the former wife of Dan Thompson of East Bend, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Thompson was retired from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where she worked for many years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Theresa Rau of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Shannon Mize of Kernersville, and Trinity Shane Fowler of Winston-Salem; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Todd Thompson. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. John Robert Young Sr., 78, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. He was born July 28, 1923, in Winston-Salem to William N. and Mabel Pamplin Young. Mr. Young was a member of Wallburg Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He retired from Sara Lee Corp. after 39 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mabel Davis Young of the home; two daughters, Mary Kathryn Fudger of Columbia, S.C., and Martha Ann and Art Redding of Watkinsville, Ga.; a son, John R. Young Jr. and Nancy of Cary; six grandchildren, Beth Fudger Corbett and Trey Fudger of Columbia, S.C., Sarah Redding and Laura Redding of Watkinsville, Ga., Emily Young and Valerie Young of Cary; a great-grandchild, Wesley Corbett of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Mary Virginia Wolf of Winston-Salem; and a special aunt, Mrs. W.E. Bach of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallburg Baptist Church, with Dr. Brooks Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Mr. Eric Christopher Bramlett, 19, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002. He was born Aug. 25, 1982, in Forsyth County. Mr. Bramlett was a graduate of Ledford High School class of 2000, attended N.C. State University where he was a member of the marching band, and he was a junior firefighter with the Gumtree Fire Department. Surviving are his parents, Richard and Carolyn Bramlett of Winston-Salem; a sister, Christi Grimsley and husband, Eddie, of Lexington; a grandmother, Mary Becker of Sparta; a grandfather, Robert Simpson Sr. of Kernersville and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Albert Smith. Burial will follow in Faith Missionary Alliance Church cemetery. Kathy Clark of Winston-Salem died Feb. 9, 2002. Always the fighter, she came upon a battle she could not win. She was a former employee of WILCO and K&S News. Survivors include her husband, Bill Clark; her mother, Betsy Wall and children, Cheyanne, John and William. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in Taylor Hall at First Christian Church. Visitation will be held at the church following the service. CROSSLIN
Mr. Donald William Crosslin, 65, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday morning Feb. 8, 2002. He was born March 13, 1937, in Madison, Tenn., to William Thomas and Olivia Sims Crosslin. Mr. Crosslin formerly resided in Florence, Ala., but has lived in Winston-Salem for the past five and a half years. He was an active member of the Shoals Seventh-day Adventist Church in Florence, Ala., until his health necessitated his move to Winston-Salem to be near family. Mr. Crosslin served in the U.S. Army in Germany and after returning to Alabama, worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant for most of his career. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Crosslin Davis and her husband, Dr. C.M. Davis Jr., of Winston-Salem; a brother R.T. Crosslin and his wife, Mary, of San Pablo, Calif., as well as 13 nieces and nephews of North Carolina, Tennessee and California. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances Crosslin James. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 10, 2002, at the Winston-Salem First Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4545 Country Club Road by Elder Sevn Behm. Mrs. Lena Pickett Talbert Dhue, 94, died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Winston-Salem. She was born on Oct. 28, 1907, in Sampson County and lived her adult life in Durham. She was retired from Liggett Myers Tobacco Co. and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. At the time of her death she resided in Winston-Salem and belonged to Centenary United Methodist Church. Mrs. Dhue was a woman of noble character who set about her work vigorously. She was generous, compassionate, clothed with strength and dignity and spoke with wisdom. Her family will forever be blessed by the example she set as she lived her life for her Savior, Jesus Christ. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Talbert Umstead and son-in-law, C. Parker Umstead, of Winston-Salem; daughter, Sue Talbert Underwood of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Mildred Pickett Caudle of McLeansville; nine grandchildren and spouses and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Talbert Webster. A memorial service will be held in Winston-Salem on Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Centenary United Methodist Church followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. at Maplewood cemetery in Durham. Mrs. Edith Sherrill Essic of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her home after a short illness. She was born May 6, 1923, in Rowan County to the late Ranious Monroe and Minnie Houston Sherrill. She was retired from Hanes Hosiery and was of the Baptist faith. Edith was the loving wife for 57 years of David Leo Essic, who died July 23, 1999. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Ila Sherrill and Eulalia Lipe, and four brothers, Eurell, Paul, Albert and Howard Sherrill. Surviving are two sisters, Rachel Hendrix and Beatrice (Pat) Reavis, both of Mocksville, and two brothers, Asa Sherrill and Roland (Ruth) Sherrill, both of Kannapolis, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Her funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at 7 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Mr. Arthur Carr Everett, 79, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Everett was born on Oct. 2, 1922, in Latrobe, Pa., to Arthur Leroy and Esther Carr Everett. Mr. Everett was a lifelong member of Loyalhanna Lodge No. 275 F&A.M. in Latrobe, Pa. He served his country in World War II as a private first class in the Army, stationed in the CBI Theater. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0515 and the Robert G. Tate 9 Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, both in Latrobe, Pa. Mr. Everett retired from PPG Industries in Pittsburgh, Pa., as supervisor of state income and franchise taxes. He graduated from Latrobe High School and from Saint Vincent's College in Latrobe, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret Ann Popernack Everett, and brothers, Jay Leroy and William Gerald Everett. Mr. Everett is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Marcia Ann Everett Polanis, and son-in-law, Stanley F. Polanis; grandsons Michael Everett Polanis and Mark Andrew Polanis, of Winston-Salem, and a sister, Mrs. Shirley Mae Everett Hook, and her husband, John G. Hook, of Latrobe, Pa. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Donald Albert Hillary, 75, of 120 Farmwood Drive, Apt. 50-A, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Hillary was born on March 30, 1926, in Vermilion County, Ill., a son of the late Daniel and Margaret Street Hillary. He was a retired farmer and truck driver and was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his former wife, Carol Jackson, a daughter, Becky Smith of Kernersville, and a grandson, Marc Smith also of Kernersville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at the Hayworth Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by Chaplain Beverly Landreth with burial to follow in the Mount Gur cemetery. KING - Josie Elizabeth Duggins Johnson, 73, of Highland Circle, died at her home, Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002. She was born Jan. 25, 1929, in Stokes County to Walter and Lillie Mae Bennett Duggins. Josie retired from Sara Lee in Winston-Salem after 47 years of service. She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Duggins; and a son-in-law, Ronnie Fulk. Surviving are her husband, Ralph A. Johnson of the home; daughter, Andrea (Pandy) Fulk; two granddaughters, Wendy (Mike) Wall and Misty Lynn Fulk, all of King; five brothers, Norris (Rhonda) Duggins, and Ralph Duggins of King, Pete (Mary) Duggins of Galax, Va., J.W.
