THOMASVILLE - Paul Johnson, 82, of 302 Shuler Circle, the husband of Ailene Kirkman Johnson, died Friday at the Piedmont Center Health Care Unit. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial United Methodist Church. J.C. Green & Sons Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JOHNSTON

KERNERSVILLE - Julia M. Johnston, 58, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002. She was born Dec. 20, 1943, in Tupelo, Miss. Mrs. Johnston was a member of Kernersville Moravian Church. She is survived by her husband, Mike Z. Johnston of the home; her daughter, Jill M. Johnston of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her mother, Grace M. Hurst of Radford, Va.; sister, Diana Campbell of Richmond, Va.; and her brother, Mont Phelps of Boston, Mass. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Kernersville Moravian Church with the Rev. Don Winters presiding. Burial will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. Memorials may be sent to Shepherd's Center of Kernersville Inc., 431 Bodenhamer St., Kernersville, NC 27284 or the Kernersville Moravian Church Organ Fund, 504 S. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284.

THOMASVILLE - Miss Dorothy Elizabeth King, 74, of 307 Fife St., Apt. 3, died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel.

WEST JEFFERSON - Eugene Lewis, 90, died Friday. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VALLE CRUCIS - Mrs. Thelma Norman Mast, 74, died Feb. 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Valle Crucis United Methodist Church. Barney Hampton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

McABEE

Mrs. Grace Shouns McAbee, 68, the wife of the late Bobby Lee McAbee, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at her home on Greenhouse Road. Mrs. McAbee was born in North Wilkesboro on Sept. 7, 1933, to Isaac and Leva Griffin Shouns. Mrs. McAbee is survived by a daughter, Debora Jensen of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Brian and Chris Jensen; three sisters, Ruby Beshears, Lola Tolley, and Virgie Mair; two brothers, Walter Shouns and Lloyd Shouns; three half-sisters, Dewie Landreth, Maggie Angley, and Faye Dowler and four half-brothers, Lester Shouns, Corbie Shouns, Noble Shouns, and Brock Griffin. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Woodland cemetery with the Rev. Arnett Harris officiating.

McILNAY

BOONE - Bernard Lloyd McIlnay, 50, of Holiday Hills Drive, the husband of Charlene McIlnay, died Thursday. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. today at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

MILLER

BOONE - Mrs. Thelma Woodring Miller, 85, died Feb. 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

MOORE

KING - Mr. Jerry Junior Moore passed away at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born Nov. 18, 1949, in Stokes County to Montgomery and Lucille Atkins Moore. He worked in construction and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Moore; four stepchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Etta Mae Pettitt and husband, Johnny of Tobaccoville. Virginia Craddock and husband, Jimmy of King, Geraldine Carriker and husband, Sammy of Madison and Shirley Sizemore and husband, Roy of Lewisville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bobby Joe Moore and wife, Barbara of King and Bill Moore of King and 21 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moore was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Ray Moore. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. The Moore family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

NEVELS

SUMTER, S.C. - Master David Alexander Nevels, 8, of 403 Alice Drive, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in Columbia, S.C. at the Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital. He was born in Charlotte on Sept. 9, 1993, the son of Wandalee Starks Nevels and Larry Michael Nevels. He was a second grade honor student at Alice Drive Elementary School where he received numerous awards and certificates, the principal's award for honor roll, perfect attendance, good conduct award and a certificate for outstanding abilities in music. He was a member of the Sumter Family YMCA, the karate class at the Freed School of Performing Arts, a former member of the Boy Scouts, Tiger Club #305 of Saint James Lutheran Church. David is survived by his mother, Wandalee Starks Nevels of Sumter, S.C. and his father, Larry Nevels of Charlotte; his sister, Adeia Michelle Nevels; maternal grandparents, Mae Jefferson Starks and Prince Hosanna Starks, Sr., both of Winston-Salem; paternal grandmother, Alma Marie Whitworth of Malpitas, Calif.; two uncles, Dr. Preston Henry (Wilma) Starks of Jacksonville, Fla. and Prince Hosanna Starks, Jr. of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Winifred Starks (Paul) Garrett of Durham; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, from the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday at the church. The family requests that memorials be made to the David Alexander Nevels Memorial Endowment Fund, c/o Sumter Family YMCA, 50 Willow Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150. (Russell)

SCOTT

Mr. Robert Pfohl Scott, 87, a longtime resident of Brookridge, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, after several years of declining health. He was born Dec. 31, 1914, to the late Emmanuel Walter Scott and Clara Beatrice Ring Scott. He was predeceased by his sister, Ophelia Scott Blythe, and son-in-law, Leon Hubiak. Mr. Scott graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1931. Initially, he was employed by Postal Telegraph and later by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Bowers Brothers Coffee Co. in Richmond, Va., and Pilot Brokerage Co. He retired in 1981. He was a member of Travelers' Protective Association and served as secretary/treasurer for 20 years. Mr. Scott was also a member of United Commercial Travelers and Old Town Civic Club. On June 2, 1935, he married Doris Mozelle Ziglar, his devoted wife of 63 years, who survives. Other survivors include his son, Roger McDonald Scott and wife Beverly, and daughter Rebecca Ann Scott Hubiak of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, Angela Elizabeth Scott, Claren Yvette Scott, and Scott Alexander Hubiak; and four great-grandchildren, Thompson Edward Kunz, Carter Lee Kunz, Robert Parker Scott Villalpando, and Bryce Lee Villalpando. Several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends and associates. Mr. Scott was an ordained deacon and former choir member for many years at his beloved place of worship, College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held there on Monday, Feb 11, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Jim Baucom officiating. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to College Park Baptist Church or The Beach Health Clinic, 3396 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Called "R.P." by some and "Bob" by others, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and appreciated his wit and fine character.

TESTER

SUGAR GROVE - James Everett "Jimmy" Tester, 37, died Jan. 30, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Green Valley Baptist Church. Barney Hampton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

WINKLER

BOONE - Mrs. Marian Norris Winkler, 99, of Poplar Hill Drive died Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

ZACHARY

MARION - William Arthur Zachary, Sr., 85, died Feb. 8, 2002, at the McDowell Hospital. He was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Cooleemee to the late James Walter and Lillian Allen Zachary. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Sarah Elizabeth Redwine Zachary. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Reeves Zachary of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, William Arthur Zachary, Jr. and wife, Nancy of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Cassie Zachary Thornton of Winston-Salem; a sister, Letty Zachary Kelly of Salisbury; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Marion with the Rev. Mike Holder officiating Burial will be in the Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at First United Methodist Church of Marion Ladies' Parlor. Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

AUSTIN

HUDSON - Everett C. Austin, died Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Center Grove Baptist Church in Hudson. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CANTER

Mr. Nonnie "Buck" Lester Canter, 92, of 165 Lake Road, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 19, 1909, in Forsyth County to Lee and Nancy Doty Canter. He was retired from the N.C. State Department of Transportation. Mr. Canter was a member of King Christian Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Peggy, and a son Lindon. Survivors include his wife, Mary Longworth Canter; children, Nancy, Wanda and Larry, all of Winston-Salem; sisters, Ailene and Lucille, both of Clemmons; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Canter will be taken to his home Monday and will remain there until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. David Wiles and the Rev. Randall Smith at the Mausoleum Chapel of Gardens of Memory cemetery.

CARTER

Jackson Henry Carter, 74, of Winston-Salem, a loving husband, father and grandfather who was affectionately known as "Pop," died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Stokes County to David Hunter "Doc" Carter Sr. and Jessie Martin Carter. Jack served as a member of the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and faithfully served as president of the John Shermer Bible Fellowship Sunday school class. Jack worked 54 years for General Motors in Madison, Reidsville, Sanford and Winston-Salem. He retired from Bill Harris Buick in 1992. Until his recent illness, he continued to work part-time at Flow BMW, where he enjoyed his work and many special co-workers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Carter Valenti and Irene Carter Martin, and a brother, David Hunter Carter Jr. Jack is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Wallace Richardson Carter of the home; a son John Carter and wife Lori of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Jackie Thomas and husband Frank of Glen Allen, Va., and Rosemary "Rosie" Hutchens and husband Ron of East Bend; four grandchildren, Meghan and Lauren Thomas and Matt and Lyndsey Hutchens; a sister, Virginia Tuttle and husband Norman of Walnut-Cove; a special sister-in-law, Edith Roberts; and many dear nieces and nephews, Jimmy (Shirley) Carter, Jerry (Karen) Carter, Janice (Raymond) Chandler, Susan (Larry) Blackwood, Beverly (Lewis) Jackson, John H. (Natalie) Ward, Gwyn (Bob) Tyree, Fred (Ely) Ward and Tommy (Patricia) Ward. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Francis Smith and the Rev. Will Toburen officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, 4 A Oak Branch Dr., Greensboro, NC 27405 or The American Heart Association Triad, 202 CentrePort Drive Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409, or to the charity of the donors' choice.

CAUDILL

WEST JEFFERSON -Lee Graham Caudill, 84, died Friday evening at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Mountain Home, Tenn. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson.

CAWLEY

GERMANTON - Richard Edward Cawley, 40, died at his home Friday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Slate Funeral Home in King.

GILL

TEMPE, Ariz. - Mrs. Irene Sheets Gill, 78, wife of Warren G. Gill, formerly of Wilkes County, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in Tempe, Ariz. A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at Sheets Gap cemetery. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAYES

Mrs. Betty W. Hayes of 1629 Marble St., passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of Bishopville, S.C. Mrs. Hayes was a retired employee of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System and Goody's Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She is survived by her husband, David J. Hayes Jr.; a daughter, Felicia Hayes, and a son, David J. Hayes III, all of the home; two sisters, Carrie Thomas and Beulah Toole, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Ben Williams of Greenville, S.C., and Jerry Williams of Philadelphia, Pa., and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where the Rev. H.L. Mack McConnel will officiate. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed at Douthit Funeral Chapel, 2920 Greenway Ave. from 2 to 6 p.m. today. The family may be contacted at the residence. HIGH POINT - Mrs. Mildred Lucille Green Hayworth, 85, of 4162 Wallburg-High Point Road, the wife of the late Clayton Levi Hayworth, died Sunday at High Point Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. J.C. Green & Sons, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LOGAN

PINNACLE - Mr. Floyd Martin Logan, 65, of Perch Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Stokes Regional Memorial Hospital in Danbury. He was born May 7, 1936, in Surry County to Sam Hezekiah and Lucy Mae Rachel Logan. He was a farmer and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Faye Ayers Logan of the home; five sisters, Louise Wall of Pinnacle, Lillie Mae Bledsoe of Pfafftown, Magdalene Newman of Tobaccoville, Anne Burleson of King and Yvonne B. Smith of Walnut Cove, and a brother, John Logan of Pinnacle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Rural Hall Church of God, with the Rev. Gary Thompson and the Rev. Ken Barnett officiating. Mr. Logan will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002. The Logan family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

McWRIGHT

RURAL HALL - Mr. Lawrence McWright, 58, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at his home. Mr. McWright served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years after high school. He was retired from Piedmont Airlines and later U.S. Airways. He was an honest, hardworking man. He was of the Baptist faith, and he will be missed greatly by Marilyn, his family, and friends He is survived by his son Lawrence Carl McWright Jr. of Raleigh; a very special friend, Ms. Marilyn Black; two half sisters and two half brothers. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. David Wooten at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Rural Hall Chapel.

MOON

Mr. H.C. "Charlie" Moon, 68, of Beacon Drive died Feb. 8, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 26, 1933, in Toronto, Kan. to Matt Eugene and Mary Belle Lucas Moon. Mr. Moon was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and he had retired from AT&T as an engineer. Surviving are his wife, Joyce of the home; four children, Michael W. Moon and his wife, Carol, and their son, Matthew, of Aurora, Ill., Sharyn Beadle and her husband, Todd, and their sons, Nicholas and Jacob, of Clemmons, David L. Moon and Peter D. Moon, both of Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law Helen Moon, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Diane Bliss of Wichita, Kan. A funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, with Father Tice officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics, the American Heart Association or a charity of the donor's choice.
