PAIGE

Mrs. Flora M. Paige of 1727 Thurmond St. passed away Wednesday night at her home. She was born in Burlington, where she attended the Burlington Public Schools. She moved to Winston-Salem some 58 years ago. She retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System Cafeteria after 25 years of service. She was a member of Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church and attended Ministries for Christ Church. Survivors include two daughters, Lenora P. Smith (James) and Eloise Paige, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Gwen Milledge, Rotha Milledge Jr., Roderick Milledge, John Paige, (Lisa) and James Smith, all of Winston-Salem; 11 great-grandchildren; six sisters and brothers, Howard Hunter (Alice), Lillian Hunter, Catherine Hunter, Solman Hunter, Eloise Hunter and Roxie H. Vaughn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relative and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ministries for Christ Church, with Pastor Andrea M. Nash officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The procession will assemble and leave from the home at 1727 Thurmond St. en route to the church at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday. Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory is in charge of all services and arrangements.

PARDUE

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Minnie Lee Pardue, 72, of Pleasant Ridge Road passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Pardue was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Iredell County to Arthur & Onie Stanfield Pardue. Mrs. Pardue was retired from Chatham and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Pardue, and a brother, Clyde Pardue. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Kay Pardue of State Road and Harold and Jeanette Pardue of Elkin; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold Weaver and Rhummel Pardue of Winston-Salem, Gurnie Buck and Ruth Pardue of Elkin and Dwight "Wint" and Myrtle Pardue of Jonesville; four grandchildren and spouse, Barry and Angel Pardue, Gary Pardue, Adam Pardue and Jessie Pardue, five great-grandchildren, Miranda Burch, Johnny "Bubba" Burch, Samantha Kay Pardue, Dakota Nichols and Lindsey Goss. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Paul Bell. Burial will follow at Rock Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

PARKER

MURFREESBORO - W. Carol Parker, 81, of 308 Holly Hill Road, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Parker was born March 21, 1920, to Homer Vann Parker and Sallie Wiggins Parker. He was a retired grocery merchant. He was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Pendleton Masonic Lodge #418 AF & AM and the Murfreesboro Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Bulluck Parker. Survivors include two sons, Bill Parker and wife Mona of Murfreesboro and Bob Parker and wife Mary Beth of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Trey Parker of New York, N.Y., Ann Parker of Raleigh, Spencer Parker of the U.S. Army, Korea, and Austin Parker of Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Davis L. Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home in Murfreesboro. Memorials may be made to the Murfreesboro Jefcoat Museum, c/o Murfreesboro Historical Association, 116 E. ROGERS

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Ruby Frances Rogers, 70, of 5015 Hammond St. died Saturday Feb. 9, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Rogers was born in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late W.C. and Virginia Henley Brannon and was an employee of Doss's Old Fashion Ice Cream and Grill for 17 years. She was preceded in death by a brother, W.R. Brannon. Surviving are her former husband, Johnny Widener Jr. of Walkertown; four daughters and their husbands, Gerri and J.C. Hauser of Kernersville, Colleen and Greg Hubbard and Jeanie Widener and friend, Sam Bryant, all of Winston Salem, Beanie and Luke Proffit of Asheboro; a son and his wife, Greg and Amy Widener of Walkertown; two sisters, Katie Ball and Hazel Widener, both of Briston, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild. A memorial service will be conducted 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Gary Riffe and the Rev. Dallas Blankenship. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

SCOTT

Mr. Robert Pfohl Scott, 87, a longtime resident of Brookridge, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, after several years of declining health. He was born Dec. 31, 1914, to the late Emmanuel Walter Scott and Clara Beatrice Ring Scott. He was predeceased by his sister, Ophelia Scott Blythe, and son-in-law, Leon Hubiak. Mr. Scott graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1931. Initially, he was employed by Postal Telegraph and later by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Bowers Brothers Coffee Co. in Richmond, Va., and Pilot Brokerage Co. He retired in 1981. He was a member of Travelers' Protective Association and served as secretary/treasurer for 20 years. Mr. Scott was also a member of United Commercial Travelers and Old Town Civic Club. On June 2, 1935, he married Doris Mozelle Ziglar, his devoted wife of 63 years, who survives. Other survivors include his son, Roger McDonald Scott and wife Beverly, and daughter Rebecca Ann Scott Hubiak of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, Angela Elizabeth Scott, Claren Yvette Scott, and Scott Alexander Hubiak; and four great-grandchildren, Thompson Edward Kunz, Carter Lee Kunz, Robert Parker Scott Villalpando, and Bryce Lee Villalpando. Several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends and associates. Mr. Scott was an ordained deacon and former choir member for many years at his beloved place of worship, College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held there on Monday, Feb 11, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Jim Baucom officiating. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to College Park Baptist Church or The Beach Health Clinic, 3396 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Called "R.P." by some and "Bob" by others, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and appreciated his wit and fine character.

UPCHURCH

RAEFORD - Mrs. Lorenna Love Falls Upchurch, 85, died Sunday morning, Feb. 10, 2002 in the Carolina House of Pinehurst. Mrs. Upchurch was born in Gastonia to the late William Howard and Iva Pursley Falls. She graduated from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., in 1937 with a B.A. in mathematics and began teaching math at Hoke High School in Raeford in August of 1937. She retired in June 1976. Mrs. Upchurch married the late Clyde Emmett Upchurch Jr. on June 21, 1941. A member of the Raeford United Methodist Church, she was a counselor with the youth fellowship from 1942 to 1952, WSCS president from 1963 to 1965, Sunday school teacher and Bible leader. She was president of the Raeford Women's Club from 1954 to 1956 and a Red Cross volunteer with the blood drive in Hoke County. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at the Raeford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Clyde E. Upchurch III of Islamoroda, Fla., and David Upchurch of Pinehurst; a daughter, Diane Guthrie of Clemmons; a brother, David Falls of Clover, S.C.; a sister, Nancy Falls Collin of Plattsbur, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. Contributions may be made to Raeford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 662, Raeford, NC 28376 or Pinehurst United Methodist Church, 180 Westgate Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

WYATT

Mrs. Ruth Long Wyatt, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Wyatt was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Oxford to the late Elizabeth Cutts Lea and Herbert Lea (her stepfather). She was a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church and a former employee of Wake Forest University. Mrs. Wyatt is survived by her husband, Raymond L. Wyatt of the home; a step-son, Jonathan Andrew Wyatt and wife, Margaret; three grandchildren: Greyson, Sean and Annice; her aunt, Helen Talley, of Durham and a first cousin, Betty Godwin, of Stem. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakdale Baptist Church in Spencer. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Mark Walton, a nephew, will officiate at the funeral along with Dr. Richard Groves, pastor of Wake Forest Baptist Church, and the Rev. Richard Gross, pastor of Oakdale Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Department of Biology, Wake Forest University, Box 7325, Winston-Salem, NC 27109, or to Oakdale Baptist Church cemetery Fund, Charles Street, Spencer, NC 28159.

BACKMAN

WALKER, Minn. - Nancy R. Backman, 83, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at North Country Hospital in Bemidji, Minn. Nancy was born Jan. 21, 1919, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of Walter and Lillian Rose. Nancy grew up and attended school in Winston-Salem. Following graduation from high school she attended Salem College. After her schooling she worked in various secretarial positions in Virginia and Washington D.C. On June 15, 1951, she married Van Backman, and they made their home at various Air Force bases until their retirement to Walker, Minn., in 1973. They have made their home in Walker until the present. She is survived by her husband, Van of Walker, Minn.; a daughter, Hollis Ann Backman (Daniel Cote') of Snohomish, Wash.; a son, Mark Backman (Pamela) of Oro Valley, Ariz.; a grandson, Ryan Backman of Oro Valley; a brother, Thornton Rose of Fayetteville; and two sisters-in-law, Vanetta and Verena Backman of Walker. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Walker with the Rev. Charles Rogers officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Thomas-Dennis Funeral Home. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery, Walker.

BISCOE

DENTON - Mrs. Marjean Wild Biscoe, 76, the wife of Leonard Morty Biscoe, died Sunday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, is in charge of arrangements.

BROOKS

Mrs. Gladys Bryant Brooks, 71, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002. She was born to the late Wilburn and Myrtle Bryant on May 6, 1930, in Surry County. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Providence Moravian Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Along with her parents, her brother, Alton Bryant, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Harold Brooks, of the home; a daughter and best friend, Tina Allen (Michael), of Winston-Salem; two special grandsons, Brandon and Eric Allen; three sisters, Doris Marion (Jack) of Pinnacle, Nellie Moore (Lonnie) of Mount Airy and Peggy Woodson (Robert) of Mount Airy; two brothers, Randall Bryant (Jo Ann) of Mount Airy and Rodger Bryant (Carol) of Thomasville; two stepdaughters, Becky Sanderford and Sherri Brooks; and a stepgrandson, Lee Cleary, all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Providence Moravian Church. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. The Rev. Akron Stewart will officiate. Memorials may be made to Providence Moravian Church. Vogler & Son's Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

BULLIN

ARARAT - Mrs. Thelma Mae Johnson Bullin, 84, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at her home. She was born April 22, 1917, in Surry County to Elzivan L. and Martha Jane Draughn Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include two brothers, Grady Johnson and Albert Johnson of Mount Airy; a special niece, Brenda Davis of Dobson; four other nieces; and three nephews. Mrs. Bullin was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charlie Gray Bullin; a son, Charlie Junior Bullin; two sisters, Ester Johnson and Annie Johnson; and two brothers, Walter Johnson and Wesley Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Rock Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Milton Sewell, the Rev. Clarence Marshall and the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

Mr. John Hart Cook Jr. of 625 W. Sixth St., Apt. 91, passed away Jan. 28, 2002. Services are entrusted to Beasley's Funeral Service.

DAVIS

Mr. Francis Edward "Frank" Davis, 78, of 3300 Royalton St. passed away Jan. 26, 2002. Frank was born on May 15, 1923, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Davis in Forsyth County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, first in the Blackhawk Infantry Division, then the 11th Airborne Division stationed in the Pacific and finally as a forward observer for the 675th Field Artillery. He left the service with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Davis was a retired civil servant. He was active with the First Presbyterian Church, Crisis Control Ministry and the Elks Club and was a member of the American Legion. There will be a graveside service conducted Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery by Dr. Jeff White and the Rev. Ginny Britt. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Thelma Davis; a son, Ed Davis, and daughter-in-law, Pam; two grandchildren, Taylor and Sarah; four sisters, Inez Calloway, Mary Holton, Betty Brown and Ann Goodson; and two brothers, Robert and Jerry Davis. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Cherry St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is in charge of services.

DEZERN

EAST BEND - At 12:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, Mrs. Jessie Scott Dezern, widow of Charlie Arvil Dezern of East Bend, entered into a peaceful rest at Village Care of King with many of her family members by her bedside. She was born March 4, 1908, to Henry Houston and Sarah Elizabeth Baker Scott, the sixth of eight children. She is the mother eight children, one of whom, William Matthew, preceded her in death. Surviving in the order of their birth are her children, Charles Dezern, Lorene Lineberry, Peggy (Enos) Jumper, Marlene Taylor, Nell (Shannon) Barnette, Jack (Ingrid) Dezern and Larry (Terri) Dezern. Also left to cherish her memories are 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. Also preceding her in death were siblings, Mattie (Radford) Williams, Adam (Blanche) Scott, Mary (Evan) Poindexter, Carrie (Pearson) Douglas, Hester (Jesse) Poindexter, Ruth (Matthew) Poindexter and Ruby (Bing) Miller; a grandson, Tony Lineberry; a daughter-in-law, Marilee Dezern; and two sons-in-law, Hoover Lineberry and Clyde Taylor. After a lengthy study of the Bible, Jessie was baptized April 11, 1970, as one of Jehovah's Witness, and she entertained the hope in the resurrection of the dead as promised by our Lord Jesus Christ at John 5:28-29. She was an exceptional wife, mother and homemaker as described at Proverbs 31: 10-31. She learned early in life to do a lot with a little. Jessie spent more than three years as a resident of Village Care of King, N.C., and all in her family wish to express their deep appreciation for the outstanding attention, care and love shown to her by the entire staff there. Thanks everyone! The family will be at the home of Marlene Taylor, 4104 Union Hill Road, East Bend, and will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Union Hill Methodist Church cemetery immediately following the funeral.

HIGH POINT - Charles A. Dorsette, 70, died Saturday at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Temple Memorial Baptist Church, High Point. Haizlip Funeral Home, High Point is in charge of arrangements.

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Henry B. Gordon Jr., 66, died Jan. 24, 2002. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Salisbury National cemetery. Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

HARRIS

Mrs. Thelma J. Harris, 82, of Winston-Salem died Jan. 24, at Forsyth Medical Center. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home.

HOLEMAN

Mrs. Katherine Pratt Holeman, 81, of Arbor Acres passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the Fitzgerald Center. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mrs. Holeman was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Winston-Salem to John Henry and Maude Ogburn Pratt. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Hazel P. Holleman, Lellian P. Hood, Beryl Willis Fogle and Juanita P. Cox; and a brother, Russell O. Pratt. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Holeman Edwards; two grandchildren, Austin Willis Edwards and Christopher Dearmin Edwards; many beloved nieces and nephews, and a cousin, Betty McSwain. Mrs. Holeman was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Forsyth Cancer Society. The family will receive friends following the service.
