JARVIS
Mrs. Gail Gough Jarvis, 63, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002. She was born to the late Jack and Dorothy Jeffries Gough Sept. 29, 1938, in Forsyth County. She was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School. She married William Roy Jarvis Dec. 9, 1972, in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Jarvis was a lifelong member of Marvin United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and a former banquet manager of the Ramada Inn in Clemmons. She was a loving wife, mother and nana. Along with her parents, a brother, Jack Alan Gough; and a grandson, Christopher Neill Collins, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Bill Jarvis of the home; three daughters, Mandy Mitchell Dozier (Glenn) of Pfafftown, Marcie Mitchell Regenthal (Alan) of Lewisville and Page Noble Collins (Eddie) of King; eight grandchildren, Brian, Jill and Stephen Dozier, David and Lyndsey Regenthal and Sarah and Daniel Collins; and a special friend, Gail Cunningham. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Marvin United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. KENNEDY
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Lillie Burton Kennedy, 92, a resident of Pleasant Grove Church Road died Wednesday evening, Jan. 30,. 2002, at the Evergreens of High Point. She was born March 16, 1909, in Guilford County, a daughter of Charles Macon Burton and Alzenia J. Samuels Burton. She was a former employee with Adams-Millis Corp. of High Point, retiring April 10, 1961. Mrs. Kennedy was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and the ladies Sunday-school class. On Nov. 28, 1925, she was married to Holland R. Kennedy who died January 1962. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lessie Marie Kennedy, on Aug. 1, 1934. Surviving are three sons, Jesse B. Kennedy and wife Billie Sue of High Point, Jack C. Kennedy (wife Pamelia, deceased) of Pfafftown and James H. Kennedy and wife Dorothy of High Point; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel, with the Rev. B. Joe Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. PURLEAR - Mrs. Alma Minnie Laws, 90, the widow of Allie Bynum Laws of Parsonsville Road passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Laws was born June 3, 1911, in Wilkes County to the Rev. Finley and Almedia Elizabeth Parsons Carlton. Mrs. Laws was a member of Stony Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are five sons, Earl and Alice Laws, Garry and Betty Laws, all of North Wilkesboro, Burl and Evelyn Laws of Wilkesboro, Jerrel and Diane Laws of Purlear and Darrell Laws of Clay City, Ky.; two daughters, Vera and Ray Mastin, and Judy and James Warren, all of Kernersville; a sister, Lesta Rhodes of Woodruff, S.C.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Stony Hill Baptist Church, Purlear with the Rev. Kenneth Pardue and the Rev. David Testerman officiating. MCDANIEL
Ms. Elzora McDaniel, 83, formerly of 850-K File St., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. Ms. McDaniel was a native of Greenville, S.C., born April 16, 1918. She had lived in Winston-Salem most of her life, except for a period of time she lived in Chicago, where she received vocational training/certification. She was a homemaker's assistant to the Betty Johnson family. She was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for more than 55 years, where she was a member of the Miriam Missionary Group, Sunday school, senior choir and the former Community Prayer Band. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Marie McDaniel. She is survived by a stepsister, Azalee Loures; two cousins, S.T. Peden and Mary Phelps; her surrogate family, Mrs. Betty Johnson, Eddie Johnson, Carol Buckwalter, Dianne Bradley, Chase Johnson and Laura Holzbaur, a faithful care-provider; along with Candace Conrad; and other members of the family circle and friends she knew. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. MILLER
Mr. Charles Edward Miller of 5042 Shattalon Drive passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Forsyth County and a graduate of Carver High School and Winston-Salem State University. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. - Whitaker Park Division. Charles was a Methodist by faith and a member of Phi Beta Sigma. He was an advent CB-radio enthusiast, known from coast to coast as "Crap Shooter," he was a lover of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, fishing on the coast and restoring Volkswagens. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Willie A. Miller of the home; three sons, Charles Girard (Linda) Miller, Carlos Stefan Miller and Brian Terrell Miller, all of Winston-Salem; six devoted grandchildren, Carlos, Brian Jr., Girard Jr., Russell, Nicole and Lauren, his mother, Mrs. Lillian Davis Miller of Winston-Salem; a goddaughter, Reneka Johnson of the home; a sister, Norma M. (Macon Patton of Winston-Salem; three aunts; an uncle; several other relatives; and two devoted cousins, James Hauser of Winston-Salem and George Davis of Reidsville. Special thanks to Dr. G. William Haggerson, Dr. Scott Moore, Dr. Nancy Murphy and the staff at Forsyth Medical Center, sixth floor East tower and fifth floor C.C.U., Piedmont Dialysis and North Point Dialysis. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Hessie Shore Moore, 79, of Amberhill Road died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. A native of Iredell County, she was born Feb. 10, 1922, the daughter of Daniel D. and Ada S. Shore. She was married March 7, 1942, to the Rev. Paul Moore who preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1991. She was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. She faithfully served in many capacities alongside her husband, the Rev. Paul Moore, as he pastored many churches in the surrounding area. She is survived by a daughter, Joy M. Moose, and her husband, Wayne, of Yadkinville; a son, Larry E. Moore and his wife, Linda, of Mocksville; two grandchildren, Daniel Moore and friend Christie Reavis of Mocksville and Matthew Moore and wife Bonnie of Yadkinville; a great-granddaughter, Courtney Leann Moore of Mocksville; a daughter that the Rev. and Mrs. Moore called their own, Trudi Martin of Yadkinville; and four sisters, Lossie Martin and Iva Barnette of Harmony, Annie Wilkins of Mocksville and Lottie Brown of North Wilkesboro. She also was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. David Kiser and the Rev. Howard Wagoner. She will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MOORE
Mr. Robert Moore, 79, of Fritz Street died Wednesday evening at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long illness. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on Nov. 10, 1922, to Kohle and Bonnie Thompson Moore. He had lived in Winston-Salem most of his adult life and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. Surviving are his sister, Dorothy M. Johnston of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mausoleum Chapel of Forsyth Memorial Park with hospice chaplain Linda Lewis officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Mr. Floyd Neal Jr., 77, known to all as "Rat," passed away Monday, Jan. 28,2002, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after an extended illness. QUALLIOTINE
GREENVILLE - Louise Reynolds Qualliotine, 78, passed away Jan. 30, 2002, at the Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville. She was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Blackville, S.C., to Tyrie Osborne and Daisy Brown Reynolds and grew up in Sumter, S.C. There she met and married Capt. Raoul Frank Qualliotine and was his faithful wife for 54 years. They traveled together at home and abroad with the U.S. Air Force for 25 years until he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. After his retirement, they lived in Fayetteville from 1966 to 1985, where he served as president of Fayetteville Avia-tion. Since 1985 they have made their home in Greenville. Her husband went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Qualliotine Mann of Winston-Salem, wife of Dr. Donald M. Mann, and three grandsons, Brian and wife Andrea, Scott and Stephen; her son, Dr. Danny Qualliotine of Greenville, husband of Paula Stokes Qualliotine, of Greenville, and two granddaughters, Rachel and Ryan; her brother, Craig Reynolds of Cedartown, Ga.; her sister, Elizabeth Reynolds Currie of Sumter, S.C.; and her brother- and sister-in-law, Otto and Jean Qualliotine of Greenville. She was a dedicated homemaker, investing her life in her family. They will deeply miss her love, prayers and encouragement. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service. In the late spring, another service will be held at Arlington National cemetery in Washington, D.C., when family and friends will celebrate Col. and Mrs. Qualliotine's life together at a shared place of honor for service to their country.
RANSON
Mr. Clyde Earnest Ranson, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1925, to Helen Mabel Weavil and Earnest Hobert Ranson in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Ranson was a Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, and he was an active member of the American Legion. He was a founding member and active participant in the Tarheel Cutlery Club, as well as a board member of the National Knife and Cutlery Association. Mr. Ranson was commissioned a Kentucky colonel by Gov. Julian M. Carroll in September 1977. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Imogene Quesinberry Ranson; a sister, Iris Wright (James) of Winston-Salem; a son, John Clyde Ranson (Leslie) of Terrell; and a grandson, Robert Sebastian Hubbard (Theresa) of Wake Forest. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Funeral Home. SAWYER
Mrs. Edna Matthews Sawyer, the wife of Dr. John W. "Jack" Sawyer, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at Salemtowne after more than a year of declining health after a stroke. She was born March 25, 1916, in Garland, Sampson County, and was the daughter of the late O.C. and Florrie McDaniel Matthews. She was a graduate of William and Mary College, with further study at Wake Forest University and the University of Missouri. She taught in public schools for more than 40 years including teaching in Greene County, Lexington, Columbia, Mo., Atlanta, Ga., and Richmond, Va., before moving to Winston-Salem in 1956 as her husband joined the faculty of Wake Forest College. After that time, she taught at Whitaker School and Sherwood Forest School. Edna is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dr. John W. "Jack" Sawyer; a son, Dr. John W. Sawyer Jr. and his wife, Dr. Martha L. Elks, and their daughters, Julia and Karen Sawyer, all of Atlanta, Ga. She also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Hazel M. Bopp of Cary; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Lucille Sawyer of Portsmouth, Va.; a brother-in-law, Robert J. Sawyer, also of Portsmouth; and an aunt, several nieces and nephews and many cousins. The family expresses much appreciation for the loving and caring professional treatment that Edna has received during her stay at the Phillips Healthcare Center in Salemtowne. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, in the chapel of Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. ASHEBORO - Mrs. Mary Sue Peavy Sims, 89, of 711 W. Kivett St. died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002. A celebration of life will be conducted by the Rev. W. Christopher Thore at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service and other times at the home. She was born July 10, 1912, the daughter of the late James M. and Cornelia Dean Peavy in Roanoke, Ala. She honestly and faithfully served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. and was honorably discharged as second lieutenant in 1943. She also was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. Throughout her career she held various positions with the last being with Appalachian State University. Even after retirement, and until very recently, she did accounting for First Line Active Wear, Wells Hosiery and Asheboro Housing Authority. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca S. Phillips. She had many friends and was loved by all. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly S. Morton of Asheboro; grandchildren David Kent Osborne of Tupelo, Miss., Charles Edward Osborne of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Phillips of Norfolk, Va., Craig Smith of Milledgeville, Ga., and Michelle Norris of Asheboro; five great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Ted Cooley. Mrs. Jessie Cave Lemons Sizemore, 62, of Winston-Salem died Thursday morning, Jan. 31, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 16, 1939, in Yadkin County to George Brady and Ona Lee Marion Cave. Mrs. Sizemore was a member of New Hope Baptist Church on Old Rural Hall Road and was preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Lee Lemons. Surviving are her husband, Maxwell Sizemore of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and James Stone of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Brittney Michelle, Caitlin Paige and Harrison Brady Stone; a stepdaughter, Clovis S. (Bob) Harper of Marietta, Ga.; a stepgranddaughter, Melina Harper; three sisters, Barbara Hall of Boonville, Judy Nixon of Shelby and Rita Bianco of New York; special friends, Bob and Jo Welborn of Winston-Salem; and many special nieces, nephews and friends. RURAL HALL - Master Kamerron Isaiah Speas, infant son of Cornell and Robin Speas, of 870 Shell Habour Blvd. passed away Jan. 25, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Jan. 24, 2002. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind a brother, Jeremy Trope; a sister, Tatianna Speas; paternal grandparents, the Rev. Billy and Odessa Speas of Pfafftown; maternal grandmother Ms. Patsy Clark of Long Lake, N.Y.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. Mr. Frank Spillman, 76, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at his home. He was born May 4, 1925, in Forsyth County to the late John William and Della Nixon Spillman. Mr. Spillman served in the U.S. Navy during World War ll and was retired from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. Spillman was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Spillman, in April 1996. He is survived by a daughter, Marquita Sadler of Indialantic, Fla.; a stepson, Hubert "Butch" Barney of Clemmons; a stepdaughter, Brenda Sue Norman of Winston-Salem; three stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Glenn Spillman of Winston-Salem, Robert Spillman of Walkertown and Gray Spillman of Lexington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
