Mr. Quincy Deharilland Thomas, 23, 1165 Midway School Road (Midway community), passed away Jan. 29, 2002, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 28, 1978, in Davidson County to Linda Smith. He graduated from North Davidson High School and was employed by Sears as a credit specialist. He was a member of Higher Ground Deliverance Tabernacle Inc., where he served as the director of the J.H. Heath Ensemble, Higher Ground Praise Team and Youth Department of Higher Ground and was responsible for the Bishop's Hymn for the month. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roby Thomas. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving mother, Linda Smith; stepfather David Smith; grandparents Odalia Thomas; aunt Mary Thomas; uncles John W. (Bernice) Tuttle, James Andrews Thomas, Henry (Rachael) Lee, Clifton (Donice) Lindsay and Luther (Elizabeth) Jones; great-aunt Ollie Tuttle; special friends, Precious Ford, Adrian Pierce and Jason Tuttle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services are set for 1:30 Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Higher Ground Deliverance Inc., where Bishop John Heath will officiate. Burial will follow in the cemetery of the Righteous Church of God. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Gilmore Chapel in Lexington. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. WELFARE
Mrs. Brona Sharp Welfare, 88, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Transylvania County to the late Calvin Russell and Allie Mull Sharp. Mrs. Welfare was retired from Crown Drugs and was a member of Home Moravian Church. She is survived by a daughter, Brona Welfare Passmore of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Melissa Passmore; a brother, Craig Sharp of Willingboro, N.J.; a sister, Velma Brinsfield of Wilsonville, Ala.; a friend, Terry Passmore; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Scott Venable. Burial will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Norman Carter Williams "Doc", 68, of 421 Jefferson St., went home to be with Jesus Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 15, 1933, in Rockingham County, a son of Walter Davis and Cosby Vernon Williams. He was a retiree of Hooker Furniture and a member of Bible Revival Ministries Center. Surviving are his wife, Marie Williams of the home; three daughters, Mary Marshall, Pat Cash and Donna Dunlap, all of Kernersville; two brothers, James Williams of Walnut Cove and Jason Williams of Madison; six grandchildren, David Marshall, Eric Kirkman, Shannon Williams, Ashley Williams, Matthew Dunlap and Courtney Dunlap; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Saturday, Feb., 2, 2002, at Bible Revival Ministries Center by the Rev. Bill Daniel and the Rev. Bud Whitfield. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. WYATT
ADVANCE - Sonia H. Wyatt, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Winston-Salem and went to live with her Lord. Born in Poland, Sonia emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. As an Ice Follies skating star, she appeared in movies with Sonia Henje and Robert Montgomery, including The Ice Follies of 1942. Always patriotic and proud of her United States citizenship, Sonia and her fellow skaters sold numerous World War II bonds supporting the war effort. While skating, she met her future husband, Jerry, a Navy patrol-plane squadron commander in the Aleutians, marrying him in 1943. Sonia was a loyal helpmate to Jerry in his executive career with Reeves Brothers Inc., acting as hostess and translator during their various world travels. While raising their young family in New Jersey, Sonia was instrumental in establishing the skating program at the Beacon Hill club in Summit, N.J., and its affiliation with the U.S. Figure Skating Association. She also volunteered at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Sonia's many artistic talents included decoupage, miniature rooms and furniture making, knitting, needlepoint, crewel and petit point. A gifted teacher, she shared her talents with family and friends. She was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian, Winston-Salem. Surviving are her loving husband, Jeremiah H. Wyatt; her son, Jeremiah H. Wyatt II; a daughter, Marsha W. Ellison; a son-in-law, James M. Ellison; a daughter-in-law, Jennifer E. Wyatt; and adored grandchildren, Stefanie R. Ellison, Caroline w. Ellison, Jeremiah H. Wyatt III and Jacquelyn S. Wyatt. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Highway 158, Clemmons. NORTH WILKESBORO - The Rev. Wayne Edgar Blevins, 62, of Forest Road died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Fairplains Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hackworth, the Rev. Fred Miller, Mr. Steve Absher and Mr. Eddie Minton officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Blevins was born in Wilkes County, May 8, 1939, to Gorman Edgar and Ada Bertha Cleary Blevins. He was a member of Fairplains Baptist Church. The Rev. Blevins is survived by his wife, Joyce Absher Blevins, of the home; a daughter, Wynnette Blevins Queen, of North Wilkesboro; a son, Mark Allen Blevins, of Thomasville; two sisters, Ruby Hayes of North Wilkesboro and Estelle Treadaway of Moravian Falls; two brothers, Robert Blevins of Winston Salem and Ray Blevins of North Wilkesboro; and four granddaughters. The family will receive from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday night at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro. Mrs. Margaret Masten Bowles of 3208 Salemtowne Drive died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 30, 1909, in Forsyth County to Daisy Stipe Masten and Charles Monroe Masten. Her husband, Arthur Riddick Bowles, and her daughter, Martha Anne Bowles Weber, preceded Mrs. Bowles in death. She is survived by her son, Monroe Bowles, and his wife, Peggy; four grandsons, Christian Weber and his wife, Leigh, Riddick Weber and his wife, Julie, Herbert Weber and David Weber; six great-grandchildren, Emily and Eric Weber, Claire Anne Weber and Isaac, John Charles and Daniel Weber; two sisters-in-law, Lucile Bowles and Lucille Neyle; and several nieces and nephews, Linda Shumate, Rosarhea Karrpinen, Gene Bowles, Nancy Tutterow and Paul MacCormick. Mrs. Bowles was a lifelong member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church where she had served for over 20 years as a Sunday school teacher and had assisted with the tape ministry program for shut-ins, had a special job in the candle trimming for the Christmas Eve Lovefeast Service and assisted the church secretary in processing the church bulletins and church newsletters. Mrs. Bowles had worked for Dan Drummond Accounting Firm and Clay Printing. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fries Memorial Moravian Church by the Rev. Stuart Zimmerman. A graveside service will follow at God's Acre. The family visitation will be from 7 to 9 Wednesday night, Jan. 30, at Vogler and Son's Main Street Chapel. BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Ms. Ernestine Cathcart, 63, passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. She was born in South Carolina to James and Rosetta Cathcart and was a home health aide. She is survived by her parents; her children, D'Eternal Allah, Clarence Winfield, Pelanora Cathcart-Lilly, Denetha Cathcart and Kiron Cathcart, all of North Carolina; brothers Joseph, James Jr., Frank, David and George Cathcart, all of North Carolina; sisters Bernice Thomas and Louise Sinclair; and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Fay Hamby Colbert, 89, of Birchdale Drive, died at Britthaven of Kernersville Jan. 29, 2002. She was born in Wilkes County Sept. 22, 1912, to Jasper and Dona Andrews Hamby. Mrs. Colbert was a very active member of Robin Hood Road Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school. She was retired from Western Electric Co. with 27 years of service. Mrs. Colbert was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William A. Colbert; a daughter, Gloria Jean Taylor; a stepdaughter, Frances Goldsmith; three brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are two sons, Miles E. Colbert and his wife, Elaine of Winston-Salem and William Gregory Colbert and his wife, Ann of Lewisville; two stepdaughters, Juanita Lamay and her husband, Jack of Sterling, Va. and Delores Eberly and her husband, Dutch of Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Miles and her husband, Bruce of Ferguson and Madeline Tesh of Clemmons. Ms. Rosa Lee Howard of 2724 Ansonia St. passed away early Monday morning, Jan. 28, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following an extended period of illness. She was born to the late Oscar and Lula Clyburn Williams in Lancaster, S.C., where she attended the public schools. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, She graduated from Russell Business College. She was a member and ordained elder of Grace Presbyterian Church U.S.A., where she was formerly active with the United Presbyterian Women, Tuesday night bible study, gospel and fifth Sunday choirs, and was a former youth Sunday school teacher. In the community Ms. Howard was a member of the Amicae (friends) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and a former precinct chairperson for the Mount Sinai and St. Stephens voting precincts. She was a very devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary (Thomas) Chisholm of Winston-Salem; two sons, James Wilson of Amissville, Va., and Richard (Cleta) Wilson of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Stewart, Mrs. Lucile Faulkner and Mrs. Emma (William) Shouse, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a very devoted friend and caregiver, Mrs. Sara Lewis of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Grace Presbyterian Church U.S.A., with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Ella Wright Larmore of 2225 Polo Road passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 27, 2002, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Mrs. Larmore was born March 25, 1917, to Claude and Eunice Mason Wright in Mardella Springs, Md. She was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, William George Larmore, on May 18, 2000. Funeral services will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, by Dr. Randy Waugh and the Rev. Robert Symanski. She is survived by a son, William T. Larmore and wife, BJ, of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Noah W. HIGH POINT - Mr. David Curtis Martin, 81, of 2511 D. Ambassador Court died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, after being in declining health for the past 18 months. He was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Wilkes County to the late Oma Lee Hodge Martin and John Lee Martin. Mr. Martin received his education in the Jonesville schools, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radar tail gunner with the 17th Bomb Squadron during World War II and was a plumber and a rock mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Carl Martin on Sept. 22, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Edna Cheek Martin, whom he married June 20, 1946; a son, Jonathan R. Martin; two daughters, Anne M. Turnage of New Bern and Debbie M. Branson of High Point; and six grandchildren. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the U.S. National cemetery, Government road location with military graveside rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.
