ARARAT, Va. - Mr. Everett Lee Martin, 66, the husband of June Smith Martin, died Tuesday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

LEXINGTON - Mr. Bernie Bryce Murdock, 85, the husband of Helen Hooks Murdock, died Tuesday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.

MURPHY

CLEMMONS - Alma Kathryn Woosley Murphy, 74, of 8353 N. N.C. Highway 150, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at her home. Arrangements are incomplete at Davidson Funeral Home- Hickory Tree Chapel.

NICHOLS

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Betty Lackey Nichols, 73, of Boone Trail died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Millers Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. T. Steven McLain and the Rev. Bruce Gwyn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Nichols was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Caldwell County to Grady Glenn and Estelle West Lackey. She was retired from Spainhours after 28 years of service. Mrs. and Mr. Nichols were married for 53 years. She was an active member of Union United Methodist Church where she served on many committees. She is survived by her husband, J. M. "Red" Nichols Jr. of the home; a daughter, Linda Hale of Millers Creek; a son, Rex Nichols of Boomer; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday night at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, 708 Curtis Bridge Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659; or to Millers Creek United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 4705 Boone Trail, Millers Creek, NC 28651.

NORTON

Mrs. Phyllis Ann Norton, 64, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, after a one week illness at Forsyth Medical Center. Surviving are her beloved husband of 49 years, W.L. "Dub" Norton of the home; a daughter, Cheryll Norton Rowland and husband Dee; and her sister-in-law, Delilah Norton Vogler and husband Jim. She was preceded in death by her son, David Anthony Norton. She was born Oct. 23, 1937, in Forsyth County. She retired from Western Electric after more than 30 years service. The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens on High Point Road, by the Rev. Stephen young Livengood, cousin of the deceased. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Moore, Roger D. Jones, Fontain Carter, Roger Hoots, James Vogler and Jimmy Vogler. Memorials can be sent to the Humane Society, her favorite charity.

PHIPPS

LANSING -Mrs. Zollie Sturgill Phipps, 89, the wife of the late Blaine Phipps, died Sunday at Ashe Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

RENEGAR

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Faye Bumgarner Smith Renegar, 71, the wife of the late Harold Renegar, died Monday at Maple Leaf Nursing Center in Statesville. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at Mountlawn Memorial Park. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TRANSOU

WELCOME - Mrs. Elizabeth Stokes Transou, 77, of 120 Jackson St., went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Sunbridge Care Rehabilitation Center in Lexington. She was a native of Davidson County, born June 22, 1924, to the late Jethro and Hattie Coggins Stokes. She attended Dunbar High School in Lexington and was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the usher board and missionary circle. She was a retired employee of PPG. She was preceded in passing by a sister, Louise Stokes. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, John Transou of the home; a brother, Lee A. Stokes (Georgia) of Baltimore, Md.; two stepchildren, Levi Hill (Alvonia) and Alline Blair (Booker), both of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Lee M. Stokes of Baltimore; seven sisters-in-law, Nellie P. Transou and Roslyn M. Thompson, both of Winston-Salem, Georgia Stokes of Baltimore, Jean C. Brennan of Philadelphia and Tempie Robinson, Elizabeth Henderson (Frank) and Julia Huggins, all of Lexington; a brother-in-law, Charles Transou of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Good-will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Philemon Samuels officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of Goodwill Baptist Church cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. (Russell)

LEXINGTON - Mr. Marvin Lewis Tripp, 47, died Monday at Moses Cone Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Piedmont Funeral Home, Lexington.

TRIVETTE

CONOVER - Mrs. Hazel Pruitt Trivette, 66, of 1769-C Noah Path died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at her residence. She was born July 7, 1935, in Forsyth County to the late Rev. James Garfield Pruitt and Lola Carter Pruitt. She retired from Centel Telephone Co. and was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Taylorsville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kim Travis, and a granddaughter, Brittney Faye Trivette. Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Hall and her husband, the Rev. James Hall, of Thurmond, Jeannie Parker and her husband, Tracy, of Catawba, Alice Miller and her husband, Gary, of Conover and Frankie Reese and her husband, the Rev. Keith Reese, of Taylorsville; five sons, James Mathis and wife Judy of Tobaccoville, Johnny Mathis and wife Tammy of Winston-Salem, Lanny Mathis and wife Debbie of Lewisville, Carl Trivette and wife Terri of Vale and Albert Trivette and wife Sharon of Hickory; two sisters, Jean Whitaker of High Point and Betty Miller of Taylorsville; four brothers, the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt of Elkin, Wade Pruitt of High Point and Frank Pruitt and Joe Pruitt, both of Grayson, Ga.; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thurs-day, Jan. 31, 2002, at Smyrna Baptist Church in Taylorsville by the Rev. Michael Barber and the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Smyrna Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour. Pallbearers will be James Mathis, Johnny Mathis, Lanny Mathis, Carl Trivette, Albert Trivette and the Rev. Michael Barber. Honorary pallbearers will be Darrell Hall, Jason Christopher, Eric Mathis and Tracy Parker. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Hazel Pruitt Trivette to Smyrna Baptist Church Missions Fund, 6150 Church Road, Taylorsville, NC 28681. WATTS

KING - Mr. "Shorty" Cecil T. Watts, a beloved, sweet and humble dad and grandpa, 80, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice of Winston-Salem. He was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Stokes County to Cicero and Bessie Boyles Watts. Mr. Watts retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a lifelong resident of the Capella Community. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Glennell and Bobby Linville of Belews Creek; a son and daughter-in-law, Merril and Alice Watts of Yadkinville; seven grandchildren, Terrie (John) Cummings, Sharron (Tommy) Fauber, Robin Cook, Shellie (Brian) Booe, Kimberly Watts, Tiffany Watts and Kristie Mahan; 10 great-grandchildren, Billy, Jessica, Ashley, Adam, Alivia, Tommy, Paul, Sara, Alex and Austin; and a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Tine Bolejack of Rural Hall. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Capella Church of Christ, in Capella, conducted by Pastor Lamar Tillman and Pastor Todd Lusk. Interment will follow in the Capella Church of Christ cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Capella Church of Christ and other times at the home of Glennell and Bobby Linville, Highway 65, Belews Creek. Memorials may be made to Capella Church of Christ, 1187 Flat Shoals Road, King, NC 27021. The Watts Family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

LANSING - Mr. Birchem Wilcox, 87, the husband of the late Orpha Wilcox, died Tuesday at Ashe Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sturgills Baptist Church. Boone Family Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WINKLER

BOONE - Mr. George Winkler, 73, died Monday at his home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

BOYD

ROARING RIVER - Mrs. Thelma Curry Boyd, 80, of Old 60, widow of George Curry, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the Villages of Wilkes Skilled Care. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Brier Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Alvin Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Curry was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Wilkes County to Bryant and Vesta Segraves Mathis. She was a member of Brier Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lydia and Vernon Tilley of Roaring River, Mrs. Juanita and Oscar McNew of Peru, Ind. and Mrs. Elaine and Bob Silva of Cody, Wyo.; three sons, Gilbert and Paula Curry of Cody, Wyo., Bryant and Goldie Curry of Roaring River and Dwight and Sandra Curry of Asheboro; a brother, Roy Mathis of Roaring River; 14 grand-children; and two great-grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Saturday night from 6:30 to 8:30. Mr. Buck Pressley Burns, 49, of 1928 E. Third St. passed away Jan. 29, 2002, at his residence. He was born Oct. 20, 1952, in Anderson, S.C., to Willie Burns and Glendola Carter Burns. He was a Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his father; a sister and four brothers. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Patricia Ann Burns; sons Presley Dkaslo Ijames and Demtrius Quaye and Argentinus Quaye; brothers Walter and Jerome Carter Burns; sisters Hattie and Sherman McClendon, Lula M. Starks, Mattie L. Burns of Germantown, Md., Clatis B. Freeman of California, Willie Ann Simmons, Lucius Beverly J.B. Woods and twin sister Leslie Burns Reynolds and husband William of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Tyeasha Quaye; aunts Clatis C. Crawford of Fort Washington, Md.; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel, where the Rev. Rockford Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the funeral home. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 2713 Raleigh Ave. Arrangement entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home.

DAVIS

Mrs. Leza Bullard Davis, 101, formerly of Hampton Road, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 24, 1900, in Forsyth County to Enoch Armenius and Minnie Jones Bullard. Mrs. Davis was a lifetime member and also the oldest member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Gilbert T. Davis Sr. and wife Melba of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Gilbert T. Davis Jr. and wife Brenda of Advance; three granddaughters, Mrs. Mona Jones and husband Jack of Winston-Salem, Ms. Donna Keylon of Raleigh and Ms. Rebecca Norman of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grand-children. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. A private entombment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3530 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Ms. Carol Copple Denning, 53, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 4, 1948, in Forsyth County to Clyde T. and Evelyn Bowles Copple. Ms. Denning was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was employed for 10 years with Forsyth Country Day School. Surviving are a daughter, Chrissy Strickland (husband John) of Lewisville; a son, Brian Denning (wife Jeannie) of St. Louis, Mo.; her mother, Mrs. Evelyn Bowles Copple of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Lynn Conley of Warrenton, Va. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Don Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Mary Lee Peele Hiatt, 77, the wife of Campbell Cleve Hiatt, died Thursday at Northern Hospital of Surry County. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

HOLLINGSWORTH

PINEHURST - Bessie Walker Hollingsworth, 84, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Manorhouse Assisted Living in Pinehurst. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. L.H. Hollingsworth, a Baptist minister and former chaplain of Wake Forest University. Mrs. Hollingsworth was born Dec. 4, 1917, to the late I.W. and Lula C. Walker of Spindale. She received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Appalachian State University in Boone. For many years, she worked as a librarian in the Winston-Salem and High Point public schools and Wake Forest University. In her retirement, Mrs. Hollingsworth dedicated her time and talents to the Literacy Movement in the Winston-Salem area. She and her dear friend, Marguerite Yearns, who preceded her in death, were strong and influential advocates of literacy programs for adults and children. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy H. Brown and her husband, James C. Amundson of Raleigh, and her grandchildren, Victor Brown and Deanna Brown Butler and her husband, Kevin Butler, and great-grandson, Kasey Butler; Patricia Holshouser and her husband, James E. Holsouser Jr., of Southern Pines and her granddaughter, Ginny Mills and her husband, John Mills, and great-granddaughters Holly Mills and Maggie Mills; and Linda H. Simms and her husband, Thomas G. Simms, of Winston-Salem and her grandchildren, Jeff Simms and Amy Simms; four sisters, Edna Wilson and Nettie Blanton, both of Spindale, Geneva Roberson of Forest City and Maggie Thomas of Anderson, S.C.; and two brothers, Gordon Walker of Burlington and Ivy Walker of Spindale. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2002, in the Davis Chapel on the Wake Forest University campus in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wake Forest Baptist Church Tutoring Program, East Winston Primary School, 1612 E. 14th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27105; or to Wake Forest University Scholarship Program, P.O.
