DAVIS

SELMA - Robert Sanders "Daddy" Davis, 97, father of Boyce H. Davis, the founder of Dero's in Winston-Salem, died Friday in Clemmons. Born Sept. 19, 1904, in Johnston County to the late Thomas Freddy and Alice Starling Davis, he was the widower of Ava Pearl Poole Davis. Daddy owned and operated Davis Grocerty for many years near his home. He was the oldest member of the Selma Church of God. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with the Rev. Kenneth Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens. Surviving are his son, Boyce Henry Davis, of Blowing Rock; brother, Ralph Davis, of Chesapeake, Va.; sisters, Mary Johnson of Chesapeake, Va., and Anne Parker of Kinston; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

DOUGLAS

EAST BEND - Mr. James Carl Douglas Jr., 54, of East Bend died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Forsyth County on Oct. 30, 1947, to James Carl and Raby Brown Douglas Sr. Mr. Douglas was a former arson investigator for the city of Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman and had a keen interest in blacksmithing. Mr. Douglas was employed by the Alliance Division of Rock-Ten. He was a charter member of the Old Town Masonic Lodge 751. Mr. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Julia Douglas Choplin. Surviving are his son, James Douglas of Tobaccoville; his former wife, Dawn Shamel Douglas of Tobaccoville; an aunt, June Stout of Pfafftown; an uncle, Carl "Toot" Brown of East Bend; two special friends, Becky Poindexter and Becky Hobson, both of East Bend; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Elisha Robertson, Jim Cass, and the Rev. Janet Anderson. Burial will follow in the Union Hill Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Dawn, 624 W. Main St., Yadkinville, NC 27055.

ERWIN

MORGANTON - Mrs. Frances Louise Jamison Erwin, 75, of Terrace Place, Morganton, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Grace Hospital. She was born Nov. 1, 1926, in Burke County. She was the daughter of the late Layfette A. Jamison and Hessie Owensby Jamison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Will Pearson Erwin; a brother and four sisters. Mrs. Erwin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton. She is survived by four daughters, Regina Ann Erwin of Morganton, Janice Erwin Williams of Advance, Susan Erwin Snipes and husband, Ben R., of Lancaster, S.C., and Elizabeth "Beth" Gaither Erwin of Virginia Beach, Va; two sisters, Jean J. Edwards of Charlotte, and Ruby J. Morgan of Marion; grandchildren, Caroline Connelly Epley, Laura Williams Bishop, Carrie Erwin Williams; great-grandchildren, Emily Connelly, Dustin Epley and Cody Epley. Funeral services for Mrs. Erwin will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Beth Ann Miller officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton. Burial will follow the service at Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials in Mrs. Erwin's memory may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, Western N.C. Chapter, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, N.C. 28802, or to Make a Wish Foundation. Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Erwin family with arrangements.

EVANS

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Helen Morrow Evans, 81, formerly of Hastings Hill Road, died on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Bradford Village East. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel, led by the Rev. Don Winters. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with VFW District 11 Honor Guard providing military rites. The family will receive friends one hour before the services at the funeral home. Mrs. Evans was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Mount Ulla High School and later attended business college. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served in England during World War II. She loved fishing, gardening and pets. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Edwards Evans. She is survived by two daughters, SidDonna Evans Robbins and husband Dr. Grover J. Robbins of East Bend, and Pamela Evans Idol and husband Jeffrey G. Idol of Colfax; a sister, Mary Frances "Tut" Brantley of Mooresville; two brothers, Frank Morrow of Lake Wylie, S.C., and Bill Douglas of Mooresville; four grandchildren, Michael Edward Josey, Charles Ernest Josey, Brett B. Idol and Carlton E. Idol; and a great-grandson, Ernest Brandon Josey. Memorial contributions may be made to Kernersville Moravian Church, 504 S. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284, or the Alzheimer's Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

FULTON

Ms. Eula Fulton, of Sunrise Towers, Apt. G, passed Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her residence. She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Lewis (Jacquline) Hunter; two sisters, Dollie (Verdell) Bishop and Beulah Watkins; three brothers, Joseph (Judith) Settle, Silas Settle Jr., and Ralph Settle. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Beasley's Chapel with a local minister officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. Beasley's Funeral Services of Winston-Salem are in charge of services and arrangements.

GREENE

KING - Clara Elizabeth Harris Greene, 75, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002. She was born June 19, 1926, in Forsyth County to Daniel Edgar and Lois Elizabeth Lefler Harris. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, DeVere (Bill) Greene, and a son, Frankie Greene. Clara and her husband Bill were the owner-operators of King Lumber Co. for over 50 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in King, where she had served as Sunday school teacher, church hostess and had assisted with the youth program. She had been a member of the Stokes County Home Extension Service and the King Garden Club. Surviving are a son, Wesley Greene and two grandchildren, Seth and Laura Beth Greene, all of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Winnie Harris of Winston-Salem; seven nieces and nephews and a host of devoted friends. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in King with Dr. John Wren and the Rev. Ed Stines officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in King Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 481, King, NC 27021.

GRIFFIS

Mrs. Dolly Brenner Griffis, 67, of Winston-Salem passed away Feb. 15, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Forsyth County to Hazel Styers Brenner. Mrs. Griffis was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Griffis; a daughter, Vickie Burchette; a son, Gary Jones; a mother, Hazel Brenner; grandparents, K.C. and Lillian Styers, and aunts and uncles of the Styers family. Mrs. Griffis is survived by three daughters, Deborah Brenner of Connecticut; Pam Shore (Benny) of Boonville, Patricia Griffis of King; a son; Tommy Jones (Sandra) of Statesville; son-in-law, Donald Burchette of Gravette, Ark.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Grubbs and husband Dalton; a nephew, and a great-nephew all of Winston-Salem; aunts, Betty Hunter of Charlotte and Sarah Ellis of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; uncles, Samuel (Ruby) Styers and John (Pauline) Styers of Winston-Salem, Harold (Mary Alice) Styers of Patrick Springs, Va., and Frank (Sue) Styers of Lexington. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with the Rev. Gary Styers and Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall and at other times at the home of Mrs. Loretta Grubbs. The family wishes to thank the medical staff in the Intensive Care Unit C, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for the excellent care extended to Mrs. Griffis as well as their support to the family, and wish a special thanks to Dr. Susan Williams.

HAYMORE

MOUNT AIRY - James Richard "Pete" Haymore, 74, the husband of Elizabeth "Kay" Haymore, died Friday at Forsyth Medical Center. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Howell Funeral Chapel of Mount Airy, N.C.

HEDDERLY

WALKERTOWN - Mr. James "Jimmy" Edward Hedderly, 75, of Walkertown, husband of Kathleen Hawks Hedderly, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hedderly was born June 13, 1926, in Spartanburg County, S.C., the son of the late Albert M. and Annie Bates Hedderly. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, a self-employed postal carrier, and attended Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathleen Hawks Hedderly; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ann Harris, Sue and Rick Davis, Kathie and Dennis Bowers, and Lisa and Terry White; a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Eileen Hedderly; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Levi Thompson; and a brother, Michael Hedderly. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hedderly was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Smith. A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hawks Family cemetery in Lambsburg, Va. The service will be conducted by Elder Vance Jones and Elder David C. Jones. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

HOLLARS

SUGAR GROVE - Bertha Trivett Hollars, 94, died Feb. 16, 2002, at Highlands Nursing Home in Roan Mountain, Tenn. Funeral is 2:30 p.m. Monday at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone.

HOOTS

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Henry Delma Hoots, 87, of Ray T. Moore Road passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born June 22, 1914, in Yadkin County to the late Henry Franklin and Polly Jane Joyner Hoots. Mr. Hoots was a retired farmer, a former Yadkin County commissioner and the Yadkin County accountant, which later became known as the Yadkin County manager. Mr. Hoots also served on the board of directors for the Yadkin Valley Economic Development District Inc. (YVEDDI) and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Leota Legans Hoots, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hoots was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Benjamin F. Hoots, Frances Era Wallace, Ezra Watson Hoots, Herman Fletcher Hoots, Hubert Holton Hoots, Wade Allen Hoots, Carl Casper Hoots, Milo Taft Hoots and Silas Albert Hoots; and half sisters, Jo Ella Hoots Shore and Ila Jane Hoots Garner. His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Grady Tutterrow. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service Sunday in the church sanctuary. Friends may view Mr. Hoots from Saturday until the service on Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Deep Creek Baptist Church, 2400 Old Stage Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

JOHNSON

Mr. Kevin Eugene Johnson, 29, of 1418 Thurmond St., passed on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Libertywood Nursing Home. He was born March 21, 1972, in Forsyth County to Mr. Ronnie Connell and Ms. Jackie Johnson. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and was a student at Forsyth Technical Community College. He was a member of Saint Peters World Outreach Center. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel where the Rev. Jonnie E. Scott will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the services from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the chapel. The family will receive friends and the funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 2012 N. Cherry St. Arrangements are entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

JOLLY

ELKIN - Mrs. Esther Mae Reinhardt Jolly, 83, of Carter Mill Road passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Her funeral arrangements are incomplete with Gentry Family Funeral Service of Jonesville serving the Jolly family.

KING

HIGH POINT - Mr. Charles William King, 57, of 400 N. Main St., Apt. 701, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at his home. Mr. King was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Charles Garfield and Bessie Mae Holt King. Mr. King was a U.S. Marine veteran. He was preceded in death by sisters, Nancy King and Linda King. Surviving are his daughter, Angela King of Germanton; a son, Charles King, Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Ruth Campbell of Charlotte; a brother, Dexter King of Thomasville. A funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by Brother Don Collins. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

LITTLE

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth J. Little, 87, of 309 Little Avenue, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at her residence after a year of declining health. She was born in Smithfield to the late Walter Watson Jordan and Anne Elizabeth Blackwell Jordan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Howard Little. She was a nurse at the former City Hospital in Winston-Salem and in the early years of her practice, she worked as a nurse in her husband's practice. She was an active member of the Sharon Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she also served as the church treasurer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Anne Little Younger and husband, Bobby, of Gibsonville; sons, Mr. Howard QL Little Jr., and wife, Anne, of Advance, Dr. Edgar Watson Little and wife, Lynda, of Greensboro, Dr. Robert Winfield Little Sr., and wife, Linda, of Burlington; sisters, Mrs. Patricia Jordan Peck of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Peggy Jordan Wilson of Smithfield; grandchildren, Elizabeth Younger Lewis, Elizabeth Little Taylor, Robert Winfield Little Jr., Robyn Younger Hayes, Howard QL Little III, Deborah Lynn Little, Sherry Little Perini, Charles Andrew Little, Melissa Little Diamond, Allison Jordan Little; great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, Layna Brooke Perini and Camille Adele Diamond. Services will be Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Sharon Evangelical Lutheran Church at the Gibsonville City cemetery by the Rev. W. Ralph Heller Jr. The family will receive friends at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Sharon Evangelical Lutheran Church, 406 Alamance Street, Gibsonville, N.C. 27249.

MOUNT AIRY - Otis Junior Marsh, 71, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Northern Hospital. A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Community Baptist Church cemetery.

McHONE

MOUNT AIRY - Margaret Eliza Ables McHone, 97, died Friday at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Oakdale cemetery. Howell Funeral Services of Mount Airy is in charge of arrangements.

McNEILL

Mrs. Sallie Steelman McNeill, 94, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. She was born June 9, 1907, to Thomas Alexander and Allie Hoots Steelman in Yadkin County. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William McNeill; a son, Tom McNeill; a grandchild, Tommie Jean McNeill; and numerous brothers and sisters. Mrs. McNeill is survived by her son, Jim McNeill of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Carol Vick and Mike McNeil of Winston-Salem; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Shore; and three sisters, Josephine Brown of Yadkinville, Edith Sparks of Winston-Salem and Arlene Patterson of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by Dr. Gus Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave Jr. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request donation be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-3200.

ROBERTSON

DANBURY - Mrs. Annie Vaden Robertson, 84, of 1841 Snow Hill Church Road, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Stokes County on Sept. 1, 1917, to the late James Melvin and Hessie Stewart Vaden, was a homemaker and member of Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Robertson. Surviving are her sons, Roy (Beverly) Robertson of Danbury, Carl Woody (Evelina) Robertson of Sandy Ridge; a daughter, Mrs. Carlton (Marie) Alley of Rural Hall; a sister, Thelma Priddy of Winston-Salem; a brother, Herman Vaden of Westfield; nine grandchildren, two step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church by Elder John Calhoun and Elder J.H. Keaton. Burial will be in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the home of Mrs. Robertson. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. The family would like to thank the Kate B. Reynolds Home staff for the special care given to our mother.
