GREENSBORO - Jewel Joyce, 74, died Sunday at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro. The funeral will be Thursday in Trenton, Tenn. Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

KAYLOR

Mr. Henry Lee Kaylor, 78, a devoted and beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He lived in Winston-Salem for the past year and a half. He was formerly of Clearwater, Fla. Mr. Kaylor was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Kaylor and Eugene Kaylor. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Gardner Kaylor of the home; two sons, Gregory Lee Kaylor of Manchester N.H., and John David Kaylor of Racine Wis.; three daughters, Linda Martin of Brooksville, Fla., Grace Haynes of Winston-Salem and Pamela Kaylor of New Port Richey, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Martin, Melony Kaylor, Tricia Martin, Ian Kaylor, Jason Tracy, Nicholas Kaylor and Ryan Haynes; two great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Trinity; a brother, Billy Kaylor of Leesburg, Fla.; and three sisters Ruth Tanner of Columbus Ga., Betty Miller of Birmingham, Ala. and Ann Ferrar of Huntington W.Va. A military funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Vogler & Son's Reynolda Chapel by the Rev. Billy Kaylor.

LYALL

LAUREL SPRINGS - Dema Reeves Lyall, 84, the former wife of Glenn Lyall, died Tuesday at her home. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson.

MERRITT

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. James Edward Merritt, 58, of 4127 Kernersville Road in Winston Salem died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Merritt was born in Stokes County, a son of Frank and Mabel Lackey Merritt. Mr. Merritt was a long-distance truck driver for 30 years and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was preceded in death by a stepgrandson. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Patricia Sheppard Merritt of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy M. and Todd McPeak of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter and her husband, Sheila H. and James Hester of Belews Creek; a stepson and his wife, Jeff and Janice Hunter of Kernersville; his parents, Frank and Mabel Lackey Merritt of Lawsonville: grandchildren Tanner McPeak and Sloane McPeak; stepgrandchildren, Jamie Hester, Michael Hunter and Meagan Hunter; a sister, Charlotte M. Speas of Winston-Salem; a nephew and his wife, Christian and Michelle Speas of Winston-Salem; and his mother and father-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Lester Sheppard of Pilot Mountain. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev Jesse Bledsoe. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory cemetery in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

MULLIS

WEST JEFFERSON - Mrs. Fern Woodruff Mullis, 79, the wife of the late Thomas Earl Mullis, died Sunday at Ashe Memorial Hospital Segraves Care Center. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson.

NEAL

KING - Reva LaNell Ferguson Neal, 80, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Stokes County to Walter Gilbert and Reva Myrtle Rutledge Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Neal in 1997. Surviving are a son, Van Neal and wife Vicki of King; a daughter, Ellen Boyles and husband Gerald of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandsons, Cary and Brad Boyles and Chad and Ryan Neal; two sisters, Elizabeth Morefield and Sara Nance, both of Rural Hall; and two brothers, Gates Ferguson of King and Hight Ferguson of Rural Hall. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, with the Rev. James M. Saul officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorials may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1569, King, NC 27021.

PENN

On Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, God came for the greatest mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Mrs. Fannie Lee Penn of 3731 University Parkway #206 went home. She was a native of Forsyth County and a graduate of Atkins High School. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary board and Sunday school class No. 6. Survivors include four daughters, Sandra (Robert) Pitts, Marilyn Patterson, Pamela Penn and Virneva Penn-Wilson, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Napoleon Penn of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren, Juanita Pitts, Robert (Heather) Pitts, Sabrina (Morris) Garrett, Shawnna Penn, Tiffany Penn, Jamaine Penn of St. Louis, Mo., Kimberly Pitts of Raleigh, Johnny Penn of Capital, Md., Lisa Penn, Cory Patterson, Bobby Gibbs, Brittany Wilson, Brandon Gibbs and Phenicia Bynum; six great-grandchildren, Taylor Pitts, Addison Pitts, Ashley Penn, Breeyanna Pitts, Braden Pitts and Nicholas Pitts-Stafford; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joy Ferror. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Baptist Church with Minister Dr. Jerry Drayton officiating and the Rev. Anthony Johnson, minister, giving the eulogy. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery.

PIZZINO

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Francine B. Pizzino, 54, of 2244 Stonehaven Road died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Daytona Beach, Fla. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. Mrs. Pizzino was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and was employed by CVS Pharmacy. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Douglas Pizzino of the home; two sons, Jeff Pizzino and wife Missy, and Daniel Pizzino and wife Marscha, all of Kernersville; her parents, Shelburn and Bertha Brooks of McGraws, W.Va.; her mother-in-law, Beulah Pizzino of Glen Fork, W.Va.; a sister, Katrina Brooks of McGraws; and four grandchildren, Brooke Pizzino, Hayley Pizzino, Reagan Pizzino and Courtney Pizzino. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel, Kernersville.

SHELTON

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Mamie Tilley Shelton, 88, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Feb. 15, 1914, in Stokes County to Bud and Florida Nelson Tilley. She retired from Northern Hospital of Surry County, where she was a nursing assistant and continued to do home care for as long as she was able. She was a member of Francisco Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law:, Janice L. Beamer and husband Bob of Westfield; a granddaughter, Crystal Wood and husband Randy of Walnut Cove; two precious great-grandchildren, Ashley Brooke Wood and Hannah Elizabeth Wood; two sisters, Eleanor Hart of Naples, Fla., and Edith Martin of Pinnacle; and a brother, Frank Tilley and wife Shirley of Rural Hall. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her husband, James Nathan Shelton; four brothers, Moir, Clarence, Lloyd and James Tilley; and four sisters, Nannie Boles, Margaret Shifflettee, Avalene Tilley and Rachel Mayer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Francisco Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Charles Howell officiating and Brother Don Collins assisting. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Francisco Presbyterian Church, c/o Betty Wright, 1040 Wright Farm Road, Westfield, NC 27053. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, Feb. 20, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mrs. Shelton in Westfield. The Shelton family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

SMITH

EAST BEND - Mr. Carl Lee Smith Sr., 69, of 4129 Union Hill Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at his home. He was born in Forsyth County May 7, 1932, to Luke Vestal and Rosa Jane Smith. Mr. Smith was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 34 years service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. Mr. Smith was employed at Unifi as a security officer. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Scottie A. Davis. Surviving are his wife, Thelma B. Smith of the home; two sons, Carl E. (Melinda) Smith Jr. of Cooleemee and Randall D. (Beth) Smith of Salisbury; a stepdaughter, Sandy D. Jester of East Bend; a daughter-in-law, Patty Davis of East Bend; three sisters, Barbara Sanders, Carolyn Smith and Faye S. Myers, all of Advance; a brother, Wayne V. Smith of Clemmons; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Nancy Johnson and the Rev. Carl McArn. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

SPENCER

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Nancy Katheryn "Kathy" Stowe Spencer, 44, the wife of William L. Spencer Sr., died Tuesday at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem, Va. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel, Martinsville, Va.

SUMMERS

Ms. Myrtle Lexie Summers, 86, of 1246 E. 11th St. Apt. A passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Harnett County Feb. 10, 1916, to Lexie Dorsett and Swannie Staley. She attended United Progressive Baptist Church until her health failed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Summers; sisters Vera Phelps, Pauline Allen, Della Phelps, Jetty Phelps and Lucille Phelps; and a brother, Lewis Phelps. She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Richard Ezeal (Cora) Dorsett of Greensboro; a daughter, Nancy Antoinette Summers of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; a devoted great-grandson, Reginald T. Summers; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and a devoted friend, Bertha McNeil. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Gilmore Chapel, where Pastor James Anthony Summers will officiate and Pastor Anthony B. Wilson will give the eulogy. Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery, Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at Gilmore Chapel. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. Arrangements are entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Ivan C. Sweatt, 79, died Monday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A memorial service of word and music will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove with the Rev. Duane Steele officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Carefree, 275 Carefree Road, Stokesdale, NC 27357.

TALTON

CLAYTON - Wynona Rebecca Barber Talton, 85, died at home Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Clayton and was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Stella Austin Mission Group, Fidelis Ruth Tel Sunday school class, Debonnaire Book Club and the Unique Investment Club. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends. That love was expressed through her many gifts of beautiful flowers from her garden, her lovely hand crafts and the many acts of kindness shown toward those around her. She was especially proud of her four grandchildren. They were the closet things to heaven on earth that she knew. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Watson of Raleigh and Mary Stakeman of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Brian Watson of Raleigh and John Stakeman of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Lane Stakeman of Winston-Salem and Kelly Watson of Raleigh; a sister, Addie Fuller of Smithfield; a brother, Edward Barber of Cleveland; and many nieces and nephews. Flowers are appreciated or a memorial contribution may be made to First Baptist Church, 411 N. Fayetteville St. or Clayton Rescue Squad, South Barbour Street, Clayton. The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. John Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Maplewood cemetery. TILLEY

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Posey Louise Gray Tilley, 75, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Va. She was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Stokes County to Posey and Lizzie Pegram Gray. She retired from the dietary department of R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital and was a member of Collinstown Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Mark Oakley of Westfield; a son, Larry Dean Tilley of Westfield; two grandchildren, Kimberly Mabe and husband Todd, and Casey Tilley; and two stepgrandchildren, Shawn Spencer and Leigh Ann Spencer. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tilley was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Ausby Tilley. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Rogers and the Rev. Joel Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at State Line Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mark and Brenda Oakley, Westfield. The Tilley family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

WILLIAMS

ELKIN - Mrs. Flossie Jarvis Williams, 82, of Newman Road, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Williams was born May 18, 1919, in Iredell County to William and Mollie Jarvis. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and a member of West Elkin Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amber Benson Williams; and a son, Gary Lee Williams. Survivors include two sons and three daughters-in-law, Gene and Betty Ann Williams of Elkin, J.D. and Eula Williams of Harmony and Sue Ann Williams of Mooresville; a brother Ezelle Jarvis of Statesville; a sister, Edna Jarvis of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Brian Williams of Elkin, Alicia Williams Darnell of Winston-Salem, Angie Williams of High Point, Jason Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Stephanie Williams Ingwersen of Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren, Chasidy Williams, Benjamin Darnell, Jeremy Darnell, Zackery Ingwersen and Matthew Ingwersen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at West Elkin Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwayne Byrd. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Williams will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

WILSON

Mrs. Louise Eskridge Henry Wilson, 84, of 800 Ferrell Ave. passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Forsyth County Dec. 5, 1917, to the late Ell and Georgia Eskridge. She attended the public schools in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Wilson was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she was a former member of the church choir. For many years, she operated a licensed foster-care home, was a school-crossing guard and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie Henry; her second husband, Sylvester Wilson; sisters Thelma and Mozelle; a brother, J.D.; and a grandson, Willie Dary. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Carolyn Louise Henry of the home; a sister, Geraldine Kelly of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Carlton E. Henry of Beaver, W.Va.; a great-grandson, Carlton Henry Jr.; a foster son that she cared for since he was one year old, James H. Douthit (Glenda),; and children James Jr. and Denise, all of Winston-Salem; many other foster children, nieces, nephews and friends; a very special person, Clara Yountz and family, who were always there when needed. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the New Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Drayton officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
