Mrs. Zula Hartman Adams, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Arbor Acres Triad United Methodist Home. She was born July 10, 1910, in Davidson County to Jim and Ida Brinkley Hartman. Mrs. Adams was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Fred T. Adams. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Adams Sims (husband Bill) of Winston-Salem; and a granddaughter, Celia Sims of Alexandria, Va. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with Dr. Frank Grice officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Barbara Sims. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

BOYLES

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Max Franklin Boyles, 91, of Cookeville and formerly of Elkin died Friday evening, Feb. 22, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. A native of Pilot Mountain he was a retired employee of G and B Oil Co. He was the son of the late Walter Frank and Sarah Elizabeth Willard Boyle. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Khleif of Cookeville, Tenn.; sisters, Elizabeth Latham Cumming of Georgia, Jonnie Boyles of Pilot Mountain; grandchildren, Jeffery Stephen and Michael Stephen Khleif; special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen Bailey Boyles; brothers, Carl Delbert, Vestal Boyles; sisters, Myrll Weisner, Lois McDaniel. Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon Feb. 25, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Hollywood cemetery in Elkin with the Rev. Canon Cameron Hess officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, Cookeville, Tenn., Boy and Girl's Home of N.C. and First United Methodist Church in Elkin. MOUNT AIRY - Dennis Harden Cassell, 57, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Ararat, N.C.

CHAPPELL

YADKINVILLE - Miss Vermell Chappell, 82, a very loving, caring and special person of Yadkinville died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Yadkin Nursing Center. Miss Chappell was born March 9, 1919, in Yadkin County to John and Bertha Benton Chappell. She was retired from RJR Tobacco Co. and was a member of Swaims Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Refine Hudson; and a brother, Wayne Chappell. Surviving are two sisters, Carol Parks and Edwina Shore, both of Hamptonville; two brothers, Clois Chappell and wife, Louise, of Jonesville, and Cecil Chappell and wife, Bonnie, of Hamptonville; a sister-in-law, Irene Chappell, of Hamptonville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Miss Chappell will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Jonesville Chapel by the Rev. Roger Groce and the Rev. Vernon Brown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, N.C. The family would like to express its appreciation to the staff of Yadkin Nursing Center for the love and care given to Vermell and her family during her stay.

COMBS

HILLSVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Osa McCreary Combs, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at Twin County Regional Medical Center in Galax, Va. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Rocky Ford United Church of Christ.

CONRAD

Mrs. Doreatha Pauline Hamlin Conrad, 77, of Winston-Salem passed away on Feb. 21, 2002, after a period of declining health. Doreatha was born in Yadkin County to the late Rush and Sarah Richmond Hamlin. Mrs. Conrad was a member of Capernaum Church of Christ in Clemmons for 58 years. She was retired from the Children's Center for the physically handicapped. She was also an active member of the Greenway Homemakers Club until her health declined. Preceding her in death was a daughter, Sarah Louise Conrad; a sister, Mildred Hawkins; a granddaughter, Parrish Conrad, and a grandson, Larry Conrad. Survivors are her husband, John Alex Conrad; four sons, John Conrad Jr., Samuel Conrad, Michael Conrad (Inell) and William Conrad; three daughters, Barbara Miles (Walter), Roberta Blue (Lonnie Jr.), and Doris Fleming (Johnny); 34 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at 1 p.m. from Warners Chapel Church of Christ in Clemmons. Burial will be in the Capernaum Church of Christ cemetery, Clemmons. EDMONDSON

DAMASCUS, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Ritchie Edmondson, 94, of Damascus, Va., passed away on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. She was a native of Crandull, Tenn., and had lived in Damascus, Va., most of her life. She was a homemaker and farmer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Wirt E. Edmondson. Mrs. Edmondson was a member of the Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Vivian Barney of Lynchburg, Va., and Margaret Ann Parrish of Damascus, Va.; two sons, William "Bill" Edmondson of King and Keith Edmondson of Chilhowie, Va.; a sister, Ellen Dunn of Abingdon, Va.; a brother, George Ritchie of Meadowview, Va.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harry Layell and the Rev. Paul Humphreys officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Va. Pallbearers will be the following nephews: Elmer Fore, Bobby Dean Ritchie, Wayne Ritchie, Melvin Ritchie, Donnie Ritchie, Billy Ritchie, Gary Ritchie, Darrell Ritchie, Ben Ritchie, Montey Nelson and James Dunn. The family would like to thank all special friends and caregivers of the 3rd Wing at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Va., for all the wonderful care and love given to Mrs. Edmondson during the past six years. The family requests that flowers can be sent to the funeral home or memorial donations can be sent to the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus, VA 24236. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral service at the funeral home or at any time at the Edmondson home place. GAITHER

HARMONY - Mrs. Laverne Seaford Gaither, 76, of County Line Road died early Saturday morning, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville following a sudden illness. Mrs. Gaither was born in Davie County, Dec. 17, 1925, to the late Jack and Minnie Hamilton Seaford and was a homemaker. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church and especially enjoyed cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Calvin Gaither of the home; a son, Steve (Dianna) Gaither of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Angela Marie Gaither of Harmony; three sisters, Mrs. Bernice Hinkle, Mrs. Maxine Correll, and Mrs. Jeannette Beane, all of Advance; two brothers, Bill (Peggy) Seaford, Reginald (Dorcus) Seaford, all of Advance. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Eaton Funeral Chapel in Mocksville with the Rev. Craig Seaford officiating. Burial will be in the New Union United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. They request memorials be considered for the Sheffield-Calahaln VFD, c/o Mr. David Beck, 435 Dyson Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. The family of Mrs. Gaither wish to express sincerest appreciation to the staff of the I-C unit of Davis Regional Medical Center for the loving care and attention shown to Mrs. Gaither during her illness.

GRAHAM

BLOWING ROCK - Mildred King Graham, 86, died Saturday at Blowing Rock Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Boone.

HEGE

Mrs. Flora Hill Hege, 96, widow of Ira L. Hege, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 27, 1905, in Thomasville to William and Emma Spaugh Hill. Most of her life was spent in Winston-Salem. She attended local schools. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 38 years of service. She was the oldest member of Pinedale Christian Church. Surviving are a son Richard Hege and wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem, two grandchildren, Charles Steven Hege and wife, Brenda, and Karen Cole and husband, Randy; four great grandchildren, Brian Hege and wife, Kristie, Wesley Hege, Austin Cole, and Tyler Cole. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Pinedale Christian Church by Bill McKenzie and Bob McCaskill. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler and Sons Main St. Chapel.

KOOY

The Rev. Dr. Vernon Howard Kooy, 85, of Winston-Salem passed away on Feb. 22, 2002. He was born June 9, 1916, in Maynard, Ind., to Sam and Grace Kooy. He graduated from Thorton Junior College, Harvey, Ill., in 1933, from Central College, Pella, Iowa, in 1939 and from Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Mich., in 1942. Also in 1942, he was ordained to the ministry. He earned a master of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J., in 1944 and a doctorate of theology from Union Theological Seminary, New York City, N.Y., in 1953. As a minister, he served three churches, the Clover Hill Reformed Church, Clover Hill, N.J., the Far Rockaway Reformed Church, Far Rock Away, N.Y., and the Lodi Reformed Church, Lodi, N.J. In 1953 he was called to the professorship of New Testament Exegesis at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick, N.J., a seminary of the Reformed Church in America. He held this position until he retired in 1986. Numerous times during these 33 years he served as interim and circuit pastor to churches in N.J., Pa., N.Y. In 1993 he and his wife, Margot, moved to Winston-Salem. He was a member of the Clemmons Moravian Church. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Margot, and his children, Vernon Eugene and wife Betty of Hastings, Neb., Craig Arthur, Daryl Glenn of Winston-Salem, Gwyn Ellen Kooy-Smith and husband David of Clemmons, and Brian Keith of Carrollton, Ga. In addition he is survived by his sister Mae Anker of Lansing, Ill, and seven grandchildren, Heidi Marie Kooy, Jan Frederick Kooy, Elizabeth Anne Kooy Codel, Whitney Annelises Smith, Pieter Coventry Smith, Camden Jakob Smith and Micah Christian Smith. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Vogler's Funeral Home, Clemmons. Services will be held at Clemmons Moravian Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, by the Rev. Ray Burke. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Clemmons Moravian Church, Clemmons.

WILKESBORO - Mr. James Laws, 85, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 24, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church.

LEWIS

Mrs. Mary Jessie Paulk Lewis, 86, of 4184 Edgeware Road passed away on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born on Sept. 15, 1917, in Coffee County, Ga., to Mr. and Mrs. George B. Paulk. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, James Dale Lewis; a daughter and three grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Amos (Ruth) Lewis; four daughters, Lillian L. Ellison, Shirley F. Lewis, Bernice Hunt and Christine (Robert) Marlin; 13 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Adeline Paulk; other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held at noon Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Parklawn Memorial Garden with the Rev. L.S. Werts presiding. (Russell)

McGEE

Ms. Annie Lee McGee, formerly of 2439 Manchester St., passed on Wednesday afternoon Feb. 20, 2002, at the Silas Creek Manor nursing facility following a lengthy illness. A native of Lincolnton, she was a resident of New York for most of her life and a resident of Winston-Salem for 25 years. Mrs. McGee was a retired childcare provider and a member of Gethsemane Hope Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her spouse Hayes McGee. Surviving are a daughter, Helen (Clifton) Jones of Bedford Hills, N.Y.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Janice Austin of Winston-Salem; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the Gethsemane Hope Baptist Church. The Rev. Ernest McLaughlin will officiate and interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. CANA, Va. - Mrs. Mattie Lou Senter McKinney, 85, passed away on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002. Graveside services will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at McCraw Family cemetery.

MEADOWS

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Sluder Meadows, 76, of Mocksville died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Buncombe County to Wilburn Garret and Nellie Israel Sluder. Mrs. Meadows was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Roy Lee Meadows. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Pat "Sally" Money and husband Gene and Mrs. Virginia "Jenny" Jarvis and husband Ronald, all of Mocksville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eula Sluder Meadows of Kernersville and Elsie Sluder Smith of Williamsport, Pa. A special thanks to her caregivers, Donna Huffman, Mary Smith, Fanni Cato, Tereasa Clinton and Macreen Smith. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. D. Shane Williams officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family received friends from 7 to 9 Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. MOORE

KERNERSVILLE - The Rev. Robert Daniel Moore, 55, of 6602 Holder Inman Road, Randleman, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Rev. Moore was born a son of the late Ralph and Lola Rose Moore and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was the pastor of the White Oak Grove Church of the Living God in Kernersville, a student of the Vintage Bible College in Winston-Salem and was district pastor of the Central District of North Carolina Church of the Living God. Surviving are his wife, Rose Mary Brigner Moore, of the home; four daughters and their husbands, Kara (Kenny) Kittle of High Point, Linda Moore and Candance Moore, both of Randleman, Erin (Derwin) Locklear of Greensboro; five sons and their wives, Stephen (Sally) Moore of Seattle, Wash., Vernon Moore of Randleman, Robert Joseph (Vivian) Moore of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., David (Rene) Moore of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeremiah Moore of Portland, Ind.; five sisters; four brothers and five grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Living God Camp Ground in Pfafftown by Bishop Donnie Robinette and the Rev. Rudolph Spaulding with burial to follow in the White Oak Grove Church of the Living God cemetery in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.

NELSON

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Albert Jones Nelson, 68, of 133 Oak St. died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 1, 1933, in Forsyth County, a son of the late George and Leanna Manuel Henderson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Veterans Association in Salisbury. He was a charter member of the Piney Grove Fire Department, and he was a member of Kernersville Friends Meeting. Surviving are his wife, Mae Page Nelson of the home; two daughters, Judy Nelson Kiger (Doug) of Kernersville, and Angie Nelson Hoffner (Dave) of Pine Hall; a sister, Sarah Pulliam of Kernersville; four brothers, Roger Nelson of Kernersville, Joe Nelson of Clearwater Fla., Roscoe Nelson of Summerfield, and A.G. Nelson of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Michelle Kiger Bates of King, Jennifer Kiger of Kernersville, and Justin Nelson, also of Kernersville; a great granddaughter, Alyssa Bates. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Kernersville Friends Meeting by the Rev. Jerry Gibbons and the Rev. Myron Leonard. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Kernersville Friends Meeting, 320 N. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284, Attn: Betty Nelson.
