PITMAN

Mrs. Betty Fowler Pitman, 71, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born April 27, 1930, to Coy Lee and Leslie Henderson Fowler in Winston-Salem. She spent all her adult life in Winston-Salem and retired from Bassick-Sack. Mrs. Pitman is survived by her husband, Malvin Pitman of the home; a son, Jerry D. Pitman of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Jennifer Pitman of Pfafftown, Sherry Walker of Blowing Rock, Stacy Pitman of Matthews and Leslie Pitman of Charlotte; two great-grand-children, Zylah Grace Walker and Carousel Catherine Walker; two sisters. Sylvia Roberts and Ruth Bryan, both of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Joe Fowler of Fayetteville. Funeral services will be held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel, Monday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Ronnie L. Baity interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. SHUTT

Mrs. Lola White Shutt, 78, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 1, 1923, in Surry County to George William and Nannie Cox White. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bruce Manuel Shutt, seven brothers and a sister. Surviving are a daughter, Nanette Shutt of Winston-Salem; four sons, Tommy B. Shutt and wife, Katie and Robert A. Shutt, all of Winston-Salem, George W. Shutt and wife, Dottie and David L. Shutt, all of Lexington; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild; two sisters, Ruth Chapple with whom she made her home for the past 23 years and Hester Shutt, Newport; and many special friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Augsburg Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Ronald A. Rinn, the Rev. Shirley R. Harrison, and the Rev. Edwin Troutman. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. SPARKS

Mrs. Cleo Couch Sparks, 79, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Forsyth County to Andrew H. and Zella Nifong Couch. Mrs. Sparks was retired from Indera Mills after 52 years of service and attended First Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Andrew Couch. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Cothren and Sharon Sparks, both of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Sherri Smith, Jeremy Brendle and Lindsay Smith; a great-grandchild, Brandon Smith, and a special friend, Arthur Williard. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the First Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Robert Statton officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

STEELMAN

BOONVILLE - James Lynn Steelman, infant son of Shannon and Tracie Lynn Kimel Steelman of Boonville, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Survivors include two sisters; Kaleigh Steelman, Laken Steelman; paternal grandparents, Benny and Colleen Steelman of Boonville; maternal grandfather, William Kimel of Winston-Salem; maternal grandmother, Linda Kimel of East Bend; paternal great-grandmother, Edith Steelman of Elkin; and maternal great-grandmother; Ethel Hamlin of King. A private graveside service was held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, in the Boonville cemetery by the Rev. William Pearson. Gentry Family Funeral Service served the family.

SWAIM

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Romey George Swaim, 77, of Hamptonville died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Yadkin County to Romey and Ola Macemore Swaim. Mr. Swaim was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. George was a dedicated servant of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church, where he had 27 years of perfect attendance. Mr. Swaim was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carol Swaim; three brothers, Weldon Swaim, Hubert Stokes and Clayton Stokes. Surviving are his wife, Blanche Whitaker Swaim of the home; a son, Gary Swaim and wife Cindy of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Bridget Stanley and husband Chris of Dobson, Landon and Aaron Swaim of N.J.; two sisters, Bernice Brown and husband Jim of Hamptonville, Magdalene Stokes Huffman of Hamptonville; three brothers, Ben Stokes, Worth Stokes, W.G. Stokes, all of Hamptonville; a sister-in-law, Erie Swaim of Hamptonville and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Swaim's funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kathy Early. Mr. Swaim will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall Fund, c/o Kenny Reece, 5008 Rena Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020.

TEAGUE

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Ethel Swain Teague, 92, of Kernersville passed away at her residence on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002. She was born to the late James Lawson and Mattie Newell Swaim on Feb. 3, 1910, in Kernersville. Mrs. Teague was a member of the second graduating class from Kernersville High School. She was also a graduate of Guilford College. She married Thomas Carrick Teague on Aug. 16, 1936, at the Sedge Garden Methodist Church in Kernersville. He preceded her in death in 1990. She taught elementary school in the Forsyth school system for over 20 years. Mrs. Teague was a charter member of Union Cross Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Teague was the first woman ordained as a deacon at Union Cross Baptist Church. Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Curtis Swaim; two sisters, Ruth Pitts and Thelma West; and a grandson, Matthew Freshour. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Thomas Swann Teague and wife Nyoka Teague of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Dr. Noah Reginald Teague and wife Ruby Teague of Kernersville; a daughter, Martha Teague Smith and husband Dr. E. Leon Smith of Gastonia; nine grandchildren, Julie Thompson, David Teague, Chris Freshour, Rachel Watson, Allison Corum, Dr. Ellison Smith, Scott Teague, Brent Teague, Melanie Dillingham, and Bryan Colvard; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Holland Swaim of Winston-Salem and James Edwin Swaim of Kernersville; a sister-in-law, Lucy Mims of Lilburn, Ga. Numerous other relatives and friends survive her. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Union Cross Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Abbotts Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Dr. Chuck Towery will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Vogler and Son's Main Street Chapel. LEXINGTON - Ernest Dale Vaughan, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 in High Point Regional Hospital. There will be no funeral service. Memorial may be directed to AMVETS Post 240, Old Highway 109 North, Denton, N.C. 27239.

VESTAL

MADISON - Mrs. Callie Victoria Ross Vestal, 77, of 6581 NC 704, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A native of Surry County, Mrs. Vestal was born Sept. 28, 1924, to the late T.A. and Ora Wall Ross. She had lived in Winston-Salem for more than 50 years where she attended the Friends Church. She was retired from Hanes Hosiery Mill with 30 years service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Richard Vestal and a son, Joseph Clifton Ellison. Survivors include two sons, Michael Eddy Fulcher and wife, Althea of Madison, Larry Douglas Ellison and wife, Shirley of Winston-Salem; a brother, Bobby Eugene Ross of Ky.; a sister, Iona Cheek of Seagrove; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery, Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Clayton Tilley officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Colonial Funeral Home, Madison, and all other times at the residence.

Mr. Shuford Leroy Whitener, 66, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4780 Westchester Road, Winston-Salem.

YOUNG

Donley Beatrice Young of 2800 Gilmer Ave., passed away at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002. She was born in Coalwood, McDowell County, W. Va. She was one of nine children of the Rev. William Alexander and Aurelia Foster Pittard. She was a member of her father's church in Welch, W.Va. She was a product of the local schools and a graduate of West Virginia State College. She did graduate work at West Virginia University, Howard University, Wayne State University and Columbia University. Upon graduation and during World War II, Donley Young was an employee in the war department at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Her life's career was as an educator serving over 35 years as an English and music teacher with the McDowell Public School System. She also notably served as artiste conductor for the annual Negro Music Festival for over 35 years. After her retirement, she married her soulmate, Fred "Larry" Young and moved to Winston-Salem where they made their home for over 29 years. Mrs. Young also taught at Carver Elementary, Kennedy High School and Atkins High School. She was affiliated with many civic and cultural organizations in Winston-Salem. Her memberships included Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., a former member of the Eastern Star PHA Meridian Chapter, National Council of Negro Women, the Winston-Salem Chapter of the National Women of Achievement, Top Ladies of Distinction-Winston-Salem Chapter and the Gary District High Alumni Association. She was an active member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for 28 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Tremilla, Dionysius, Demosthenes, Duzzie, Scipio, Leona, Clementine and Cleota, a niece, Pequita, nephews, Joseph, III and Douglas. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Fred "Larry" Young; son, Michael Ross (Loren) Young of Winston-Salem; daughter, Denise of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren, all of Winston-Salem; four nieces, Ruth Pittard Braxton of Washington, D.C., Phillippa Robinson-Lassiter of Winston-Salem, Aurelia Moore (Gregory) Weaver of Gary, Ind. and Pamela Robinson (Warren) Reid of Riverdale, Ga.; a special cousin and friend, J. Diane Mathis of Knoxville, Tenn.; devoted cousin, Omer Jenn Avery of Morganton; sisters-in-law, Lorene Peterson of Morganton and Sarah (Harry) Johnson of Plainfield, N.J.; great nephews, John Billups of Riverdale, Ga., Joseph Moore, IV of Flint, Mich. and Walter and Keith Braxton of Lanham, Md.; great niece, Nichole Moore of Detroit, Mich., and a special friend, Ricky Wilson. Homegoing service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Family hour will be at 2 p.m. prior to the services. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery.

BRONX, N.Y. - Ms. Genevia Andrews, 44, died Thursday, Feb. 21, at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. at Ararat Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Airy. Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BLANTON

Mrs. Vivian Elizabeth Burton Blanton, 84, of 2118 S. Broad St. died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her home. She was a lifetime member of Home Moravian Church. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, William C. Blanton of the home; a son, William C. Blanton Jr. of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Donna Blanton of Winston-Salem, and Shannon Smith and husband James of Yadkinville; and a sister, Ruth Foster of Clemmons. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Lehoma B. Goode. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Anna Badgett Branch, 83, the widow of Howard Branch of Red Brush Road died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. She was born in Surry County on April 17, 1918, to the late Joe and Mary Eads Badgett. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez Johnson and Mildred Johnson; and a brother, Floyd Badgett. She was a member of Blue's Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Fletcher (Mary Frances) Joyce; three sons, Neal (Betty) Branch, Joe Bill (Dianne) Branch and Curtis (Pat) Branch, all of Mount Airy; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ivan (Ella) Badgett of Dobson and Seldon Badgett of Maryland. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Blue's Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the services. The Rev. Tony Holder, the Rev. Roland McCraw and the Rev. Tom Parker will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at her home on Red Brush Road.

BOONVILLE - Mr. Raymond J. Brown, 71, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at his home. Mr. Brown was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Yadkin County to Mack and Polly Wood Brown. He was retired from Lydall Inc. after 25 years of service and attended Fall Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Carrie Pate and Pauline Cockerham; and a brother, Ralph Brown. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Thelma B. Brown of the home; a special daughter, Glenda "Renee" Brown of the home; three sons, Steve Brown and wife Darlene, Dale Brown and Chris Brown and wife Betty, all of Lexington; three stepchildren, Debbie Davis and husband Gary of Thurmond, Lynn Butner of Boonville and Steve Wilhelm and wife Debbie of Roaring River; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola Clark and Mary Jane "Mert" Stonestreet and husband Bill, all of Jonesville. The funeral service for Mr. Brown will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Fall Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Hudson. Mr. Brown will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow the service in the Charity Baptist Church cemetery, Boonville. COLGIN

The Rev. George Larkin Colgin Jr., 78, of 2724 London Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Norfolk, Va., to the late George L. and Rosalie Boyce Colgin. The Rev. Colgin graduated from Eastern Baptist College and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa. He pastored churches in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. In Winston-Salem he served as minister at Calvary Baptist Church and as associate minister at Knollwood Baptist Church. His career was primarily dedicated to Clinical Pastoral Education. The Rev. Colgin was the clinical director of the School of Pastoral Care at N.C. Baptist Hospital and later, the director of training for the Department of Pastoral Services at the Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Ga. He received the National Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education in 1991. He was a president of the Southern Baptist Chaplains Association of the College of Chaplains of the American Protestant Hospital Association. After returning to Winston-Salem in 1991, he was vice president of the Shepherd's Center and a columnist for Prime Times. The Rev. Colgin was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Wilson Colgin, in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Betty DeVault Colgin. He is also survived by his three daughters, Lucy Davis, husband Jack and grandsons John and Charles of Winston-Salem; Sally Colgin, husband John Crotts and grandchildren Matthew and Sarah of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and Judy Severens, husband Michael and grandchildren Dillon, Jessica and Clare of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Muriel Fuller, husband Dick of Keystone Heights, Fla.; and stepsons William DeVault, wife Anna and grandchildren Jonathan and Elizabeth of Greenville, S.C.; and Robert DeVault and wife Julia of Knoxville, Tenn. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Knollwood Baptist Church, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. A private interment will be in the Knollwood Memorial Garden. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Garden, Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

FULTON

Margaret Adams Fulton, 74, of Winston-Salem died Thursday at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Stokes County to the late Joel Henry Fulton and Rhoda Adams Fulton. She was a graduate of Walnut Cove High School. She was a lifelong communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Walnut Cove. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Bitting. Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Loman of Winston-Salem and Mary Jo Brown of Annandale, Va.; nine nieces and nephews; and 15 great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Bill Poulos officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Cove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 476, Walnut Cove, NC 27052. Burroughs Funeral Home is serving the Fulton family.

GENTLE

LEXINGTON - Mr. Harold LeeGrand Gentle, 69, beloved husband, wonderful father and a loving "Poppie" to his grands, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Forsyth County to the late Lewis Richmond and Kathleen Murphy Gentle. Mr. Gentle was a dedicated member of Trinity Moravian Church where he was also a member of the men's fellowship and had served on the board of trustees. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gentle retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Bob Gentle. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Myers Gentle of the home; a son, Greg Gentle and wife Sara of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Robin Gentle McNeal and husband Ronnie of Lexington; six grandchildren, Courtney, Sara, Wesley and Carter Gentle, and Zachary and Lindsay Stevens; two stepgrandchildren, Russell and Jeremy McNeal; three sisters, Doris McBride of Rural Hall, Millie Plemmons of King and Carolyn Ratcliff of Lexington; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Myers of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Moravian Church with the Rev. Patricia F. Garner, Dr. Henry May and the Rev. John G. Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Moravian Church, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

GILLIAM

Ms. Cornella "Connie" Dargan Gilliam, formerly of the G.W. Holland Homes, 860-C File St., departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the Oak Summit Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Darlington, S.C., to the late Clarence Alford and Arlease Peoples Dargan. She attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools. Ms. Gilliam moved to Philadelphia at an early age and returned to Winston-Salem, where she worked for Western Electric, Experiment in Self Reliance and Frank A. Stith Co. Connie was a fun-loving person who enjoyed life to the fullest. She was always the life of the party. She was a member of United Metropolitan Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Floia Thomas, Lillian Johnson, Elease Miller; and a brother, Clarence Dargan. She is survived by her sisters, Emma Abraham of Charlotte, Marjorie Little of Winston-Salem and Ella (Alvin) Jones of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Thurnell (Nancy) Dargan Sr. of Winston-Salem; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home with the Rev. R.L. Anderson Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the home of her brother, Thurnell Dargan Sr., 2514 N.
