COCHRANE

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. - Maria White Cochrane won her battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, and went to be with the Lord whom she faithfully served all her life on Feb. 28, 2002, at Carolina Village Health Care Center in Rock Hill, S.C. Maria was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Robert Stewart and Sara Dickey White. During World War II, she was introduced to a handsome American GI, Paul McClellan Cochrane, at a weekend Bible retreat in Bangor, Northern Ireland. After Paul was shipped out to France, they corresponded through letters and fell deeply in love, putting Christ at the center of their devotion to one another. Maria flew to America to marry her beloved Paul in June 1946, proudly became a U.S. citizen, and spent her married life in State Road. Maria glorified and honored the Lord in all her words and deeds, constantly sharing the word and love of the Lord through her beautiful speaking and singing voice. She faithfully served her community and her church, Mount Pleasant Baptist, as a committed servant of the Lord Jesus Christ and a true prayer warrior. She will be forever remembered as a generous and devoted friend to all who never met a stranger, always living Christ's example and sharing Christ's love through her voice, her gentle touch and her smiling Irish eyes. She walked closely with the Lord and blessed everyone around her with her very presence. Maria was a devoted wife and mother and was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Maureen McCartan of Pensacola, Fla., and Grace and Al Waddell of Lake Wylie, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Mac and Penny Cochrane of Indian Trail; five grandchildren, Ashley Waddell, Robert Waddell, Sarah McCartan, Bradley Cochrane and Daniel Cochrane, two sisters May Wallace and Edith Nelson of Belfast (County Antrim) Northern Ireland, and a multitude of brothers and sisters in Christ. Her family extends deep gratitude to the staff of Atria Assisted Living Residence in Lake Wylie, S.C., who became her extended family as they progressed on the heartbreaking ALS journey with her during the 14 months in which Atria was her home. The love, devotion and care shown by her Atria family brought immeasurable and countless blessings into her daily life. God also placed more of His servants in her life through the ministry of Pine Grove Baptist Church of Clover, S.C. Their visitation, outreach, and prayers formed a "tie that binds in Christian love" for Maria. Even in her final days, which she spent under Hospice care at Carolina Village Health Care Center, her Christian witness continued to shine through the agony of her struggle with ALS, and she left her footprints on countless more lives. Her family is most grateful to the caring angels of both Hospice and Carolina Village in Rock Hill, S.C. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the ALS Association Carolina Chapter, 6512 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27615, or to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730, or Atria Assisted Living, 4877 Charlotte Hwy., Lake Wylie, SC 29710. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Cochrane family.
