KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Tommy Gene Cook, 50, of 221 Van Dyke St. died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at his home. Mr. Cook was born in Bryan (Brasso County), Texas, a son of Harry and Mary Bowers Cook and attended Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Mr. Cook was a quality-assurance manager for Adele Knits in Winston-Salem, a graduate of North Carolina State University, and was a member of the N.C. State University Wolfpack Club where he had served as district chairman. He was a pyre technician and a classic-car collector. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, King H. and Ceylon S. Bowers, and his paternal grandparents, Luke B. and Tommie T. Cook. Surviving in addition to his parents of Norwood is his wife, Kimberly Anne Edwards Cook, of the home. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Howard Fleming. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to N.C. State University Aid Association Wolfpack Club, P.O. SUGAR GROVE - George I. Cornett, 82, of the Mountain Dale Community, died Friday. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel in Boone. Graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain Dale Baptist Church cemetery.

COVINGTON

KING - Max R. Covington, 64, of Elberton, Ga., formerly of King, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. He was the son of Della Mae Lawson Covington of King and the late Palma C. Covington Sr. Along with his mother he is survived by his wife, Marie Patton Covington of the home; a daughter, Kelly Sue Cudd of Inman, S.C.; two stepsons, Donnie and Tommy Patton of Comer, Ga.; two grandchildren, Devin Lee and Channing Alana Cudd of Inman, S.C.; three step-grandchildren, Morgan and Shannon Patton and Patrick Morris, all of Comer, Ga.; three brothers, P.C. (June Bug) Covington Jr. of King, Bob Covington of Pinnacle and Steve M. Covington Sr. of Hartwell, Ga. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, in New Life Baptist Church cemetery, 3155 YMCA Camp Road in King. Elder Jimmy Lankford will officiate. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King.

GENTLE

LEXINGTON - Mr. Harold LeeGrand Gentle, 69, beloved husband, wonderful father and a loving "Poppie" to his grands, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Forsyth County to the late Lewis Richmond and Kathleen Murphy Gentle. Mr. Gentle was a dedicated member of Trinity Moravian Church where he was also a member of the men's fellowship and had served on the board of trustees. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gentle retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Bob Gentle. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Myers Gentle of the home; a son, Greg Gentle and wife Sara of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Robin Gentle McNeal and husband Ronnie of Lexington; six grandchildren, Courtney, Sara, Wesley and Carter Gentle, and Zachary and Lindsay Stevens; two stepgrandchildren, Russell and Jeremy McNeal; three sisters, Doris McBride of Rural Hall, Millie Plemmons of King and Carolyn Ratcliff of Lexington; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Myers of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Moravian Church with the Rev. Patricia F. Garner, Dr. Henry May and the Rev. John G. Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Moravian Church, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

SUGAR GROVE - Elsie Ellen Glenn, 97, died Friday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HICKS

LEXINGTON - Grady Edward Hicks, 71, of 3535 Winston Road died March 1, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March. 3, 2002, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel by the Rev. David Hicks. Burial will be held in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church cemetery. military graveside rites will be conducted by Fort Bragg. Mr. Hicks was born May 4, 1930, in Davidson County to Oscar Hicks, Sr. and Bertha Jeffries Sink Hicks. He was a former plant manager for Landsman Packing Co., a food-processing company. Mr. Hicks served the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifelong member of AmVets. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Hege, Ruby Temple, Mildred Michael and Gladys Walser. He is survived by sons Ricky Edward Hicks of Arizona, Ronald Craig Hicks of Winston-Salem, Dannie Ray Hicks and Eddie Gray Hicks, both of Lexington; daughter Jewel Ann Baker of Thomasville; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Dawn Brasher; two stepchildren; brothers W.O. Hicks Jr. of Mocksville and Billy Hicks of Walnut Cove; and a sister, Mary Foltz of Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel, and other times at the home.

HUNT

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Edna Dodson Hunt, 89, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Mecklenburg Health Care. She was born May 11, 1912, in Forsyth County to William H and Lula Lee Dodson. She was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. She was retired from Hunter Publishing Co. Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, and her husband, Moyer G. Hunt. Surviving are two sons, Douglas A. Hunt and wife Bari of Charlotte, and Terry Hunt and wife Shirley of Tega Cay, S.C.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister; Earline Kallam of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Curtis Dodson of Augusta, Ga. A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. Kathie Sherrill. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.

JARRELL-ANDERSON

Mrs. Beverly Jarrell-Anderson, 41, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at home. She was born Jan. 24, 1961, to William E. and Beverly Perkins Jarrell. Mrs. Anderson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was employed with Wachovia Bank and Trust for 20 years with the Forsyth County staff as a roving banker. Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her father in February 2000. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Beverly Perkins Jarrell of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Linda Hopkins of Lebanon, Tenn., and Melody J. Allen (husband Paul H.) of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, W. Dayle Jarrell (wife Leslie) of Cary and Clay P. Jarrell (wife Erica) of Chestnut Mountain, Ga.; three nieces, Danielle Hopkins, Amanda Hopkins and Hannah Allen; three nephews, Parker Allen, Graham Allen and Cole Jarrell. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Gary Chapman and Rev. Francis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. WEST JEFFERSON - Bobby Eugene Lewis, 57, the husband of Maggie Minton Lewis, died Wednesday at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beaver Creek Baptist Church. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MOCKSVILLE - Mary Hairston Mason, 99, died Thursday at Autumn Care Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Mocksville.

McDONALD

HAMPTONVILLE -Mrs. Mary Jane Davis McDonald, 62, of Macy Road passed away Thursday at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Gentry Family Chapel.

PURCELLE

TAMPA, Fla. - Mrs. Gladys Davis Purcelle, 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Tampa. Mrs. Purcelle was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Randolph County, a daughter of Plato M. and Ada Bristow Davis. She was a birthright Quaker, a lifelong member of Springfield Friends Meeting House and a charter member of Martha Jay Sunday school class. She married John Richard Purcelle Jr., who preceded her in death Nov. 24, 1964. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Judy Martin and husband Jim of Carmel, Ind., Mrs. Joy Perry and husband Robert of Tampa and Mrs. Jan Koerner and husband John of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jim Davis of Kernersville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Springfield Friends Meeting House by Ray Luther. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home, East Lexington Avenue, until it is placed in the church at 1 p.m. Visitation will be in the Martha Jay Sunday school classroom at Springfield Friends Meeting from 1 to 1:45 p.m. before the service. Memorials may be directed to Springfield Friends Meeting House, 555 E. Springfield Road, High Point, NC 27262.

SHORES

Mr. Charles William Shores, 59, of Winston-Salem died at Wake Forest University Baptist Med-ical Center late Wednesday evening, Feb. 27, 2002, after a brief illness. A native of Forsyth County, he was born June 21, 1942, to Foley William and Blanche Hudspeth Shores. In his early life, Mr. Shores raced cars at the Bowman Grey Stadium and 311 Speedway. He was a NASCAR fan and loved to fish. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert I. Shores, in 1954. Surviving is his wife of nine years, Diane Shores of the home; his parents; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin (Donnie) Fulk of Belews Creek and Charlene (Ken) Lawson of Conway, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny (Cheryl) Shores of Winston-Salem and Charles E. (Ruth) Shores of Yadkinville; a stepson, Larry Boyd of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and the mother of his children, Gloria B. "Jean" Cockerham of Winston-Salem. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday March 2, 2002, in Crestview Memorial Park by the Rev. Keith Kannenberg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel. Memorials may be made to Bowman Grey School of Medicine Cancer Research, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

STYERS

Mr. Carl E. Styers Jr., "Skee," 78, of Winston-Salem died Feb. 27, 2002. He was born Oct. 21, 1923, to the late Carl E. Styers, Sr. and Mary Myrtle Nelson Styers. He was a graduate of Hanes High School. Mr. Styers was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in World War II. He retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department as a captain, following 32 years of service. Mr. Styers was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include his wife, Daphne Bowman Styers; a son, Carl E. Styers, III and wife, Patricia of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Styers of Winston-Salem and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3780 Westchester Road, Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 5980 Kinner Road. PENHOOK, Va. - Myrtle Belle Rowledge Surridge, 94, formerly of Winston-Salem, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Gayland Surridge, and her parents, William and Jennie Mae Newman Rowledge. She is survived by daughters, Gayl Barbara Surridge Nifong of Penhook and Marcia Ruth Surridge Peace of Tampa, Fla.; sons William Gayland Surridge of Fayetteville and Ralph David Surridge of Oslo, Norway; grandchildren Jonathan William Surridge, David Gayland Surridge, Bethany Dawn Lindner, Douglas Wayne Nifong, Jennifer Gaylynn Morris, Rebekah Noelle Nifong, Stephen Eugene Nifong, Susanne Elizabeth Nifong, Kimberly Lynn Crowley, Mark Allan Lipscomb and Shannon Renee Herring; and great-grandchildren Jason Lee Crowley, Casey Renee Crowley, Joshua Daniel Crowley, Vincent Cole Rector and Cody Jodell Rector. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Fraternity Church of the Brethren with the Rev. J. Vernon Sandbek, Pastor Thomas Hanks, Pastor Robert Williard and Pastor Thomas Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at the Parklawn cemetery. VANNOY

Mr. Charles Albert Vannoy, 82, died Friday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after several months of illness. He was born in Wilkes County to Albert and Lilla Gilliam Vannoy on April 23, 1919. Mr. Vannoy served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His training in electronics led to a long career in radio and television. He worked for WSJS radio and continued his career when station WXII was created, serving as an audio-video technician. He retired in 1982 after 40 years of service. Mr. Vannoy belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, American Legion Post 55, and was a member of the 319th Bomb Group. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Preceding him in death was his son, Timothy Charles Vannoy, in 2001. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Simmons Vannoy of the home; his daughter, LuAnn Vannoy of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Sarah G. Tidball of Springfield, Va., and Mabel V. Bruce of Herndon, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. WELCH

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Mr. Bernie B. Welch, 71, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mr. Welch was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Winston-Salem, a son of A. J. and Alma Wall Welch. He was the former CEO of the North Broward Hospital District, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Lauderdale, and a member of numerous boards and charitable organizations throughout Flor-ida. Mr. Welch was a graduate of Duke University and served as a Marine Corps officer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Billings Welch, in 1994. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Richard B. and Christine Welch; and two grandsons, Richard Alexander Welch and Ryan Bernard Welch, all of Fort Lauderdale. Also surviving are a sister, Ella Louise Bennett; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. They request that memorials in the name of Bernie B. Welch be made to the Alz-heimer's Association SE Florida Chapter, 8333 W. McNab Road, Suite 210, Tamarac, FL 33321.
