WOOD

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Nellie Jolly Wood, 81, of 157 Murphy Road died Thursday, Feb. 28, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Wilkes County, the daughter of Clint L. and Clara Anderson Johnson. She was a fine Christian lady whose whole life was dedicated to serving the needs of others above herself. She attended the Wilkes County Schools. On July 25, 1935, she married Fred Jolly, who preceded her in death on March 16, 1964. Her second marriage was on Nov. 14, 1981, to Fred Wood, who preceded her in death on June 24, 1990. She was devoted to her family and lived her life for her children. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Commie Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, Walter Johnson and Guilford Johnson. She is survived by three sons, Arliss Jolly and wife Peggy of Winston-Salem, Jack Jolly and wife Linda of Statesville, Jimmy Jolly and wife Kandy of Mocksville; four daughters, Lois J. Conner and husband Flake of Statesville, Dorothy Jolly of Mocksville, Cathy J. Elliott and husband Marcus and Pat J. Guy and husband Archie, all of Statesville. Also surviving are four brothers, George Johnson, Gurney Johnson, Lawrence Johnson and R.C. Johnson, all of Wilkesboro, and a sister, Martha York Grant of Union Grove. Three half sisters also survive: Yvonne Caudill, Donna Johnson and Mary Parker, all of Wilkesboro; and three half brothers, Flake Johnson, Arville Johnson and Albert Johnson of Wilkesboro; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Northview Wesleyan Church, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, with burial to follow at 4 p.m. in Mount Sinai Baptist Church cemetery in Wilkes County. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. The Rev. Tommy Southern, the Rev Dean Lavender and the Rev. Terry Penland will conduct the services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, but at other times will be assembled at the home of the deceased. Pallbearers will be Brent Elliott, Jason Jolly, Bill Martin, Gary Eller, Kyle McGee, Chris James, John Urban and Paul DeVillo. Memorials may be given to Northview Wesleyan Church, 283 Shumaker Drive, Statesville, NC 28625. Condolences may be sent to the family by e-mail at www.legacy.com. BENNETT

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Eugene Swanson Bennett, 75, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to the late Anderson Cross and Jennie Hester Bennett. He attended Lawsonville School, was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation. Surviving are his friend of 25 years, Verbeana Woods of the home; two daughters, Shirley Joyce and husband, Ricky, "Papa Nut" and Dolly Crawley, all of Walnut Cove; two sisters, Gladys Mabe and Geneva McHone and a brother, Edsel Bennett, all of Stokes County; four grandchildren, Toby, Jamy, Erick and Bryson; six great-grandchildren, Jason, Mamie, Shayla, Ceaira, Madison and Kaleb; and his extended family, Cindy and Keith Robertson, Wanda and Mike Mabe, Frankie, Joe, Cristy, Tobie, Wendy, Corey, Austin and Justin. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Meadows Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Wall and the Rev. Roger Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawley Family cemetery. The family will receive friends at his daughter Dolly's home and Mr. Bennett's home. Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

BOGER

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Oneta Elizabeth Spry Boger, 79, of U.S. Highway 601 S., died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston- Salem. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Eaton Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Gilbreath and the Rev. David Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. They request memorials be considered for Cancer Services of Davie County, P.O. Box 744, Mocksville, NC 27028; or Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Boger was born July 12, 1922, in Davie County to the late W.W. and Bessie McCullough Spry and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Cooleemee High School and a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, working in flowers, taking bus tours and spending quality time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Boger in 1989; a grandson, Michael Boger in 1994; seven sisters; and a brother. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Dale) Arrington of Advance and Mrs. Harold (Gina) Sanders; two sons, Michael Boger, Rickey (Donna) Boger, all of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Todd Arrington, Christen Arrington, Chad Boger, Brooke Sanders, Heather Boger and Justin Boger; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Eugene Paschold and his nursing staff, especially Paula and Allison for their compassion and love shown to their mother, and to the staff at Meadowbrook of Davie for the help and compassion given to Mrs. Boger while she was a resident in their care.

BRIS-BOIS

Mr. Charles Perry Bris-Bois, 79, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, March 18, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Fulton County, Ga., to Simon and Minnie Bris-Bois. Above all else, Mr. Bris-Bois was a man of God and a reflection of Christ's love. He was a member of First Baptist Church, past chairman of its Deacons, Stewardship Committee and board of trustees and teacher of its Baraca Sunday school class for 33 years. He co-founded the Serving Our Savior Ministry and attended lovingly and faithfully to the needs of many in his community. He was a light unto the world and an example to all who knew him. Mr. Bris-Bois was a graduate of Purdues Professional Management Institute and retired from his position as district agency manager of Life of Virginia Insurance Co. after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in both the European and South Pacific Theaters. He was an avid fisherman and an avid "Fisher Of Men," a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; a kind and generous neighbor; a giver of hope; and a Keeper of Faith. Surviving are his faithful wife of 58 years, Dorothy Robbins Bris-Bois; his four children, Charles P. "Chuck" Bris-Bois Jr. and wife Vana of Winston-Salem, Douglas R. Bris-Bois and wife Gladys of St. Charles, Ill., Rene B. Shouse and husband Jonathan of Richmond, Va., and Lisa B. Bradley and husband John of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A service celebrating Mr. Bris-Bois' life and work will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church at Fifth and Spruce, presided over by Dr. David Hughes. A reception will follow, at which time friends and family are invited to share refreshments and memories and to thank God again for the life and works of this wonderful man. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Bris-Bois requested that memorial contributions may be directed to the Capital Fund of First Baptist Church; the Serving Our Savior "S.O.S." Ministry at 501 W. Fifth St. Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BUTCHER

DOBSON - Mr. Robert Butcher, 67, died Monday at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

DEUSCHLE

ASHEVILLE - Martha Brown Deuschle, 100, of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community died peacefully at Deerfield Sunday, March 17, 2002. She was born in Detroit, Mich., on Oct. 1, 1901, and spent her early years in Columbus, Ohio, where she graduated from the Columbus School for Girls. In 1929, she and her husband, William Field Deuschle, moved to Winston-Salem, where they lived for the next 36 years. In retirement, they lived in Florida and Winston-Salem. In 1966, she moved to Asheville to be near her family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Richard Guthrie of Asheville; a grandson, William E. Guthrie and wife Susan and their sons Dalton and Kellan of Santa Clara, Calif.; a granddaughter, Kathryn G. Torres and husband Cresencio of San Diego, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Martha C. Duke and son Christopher of San Jose, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today in Saint Giles Chapel at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, with the Rev. E. Morgan Gardner officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813. Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Ave., is in charge of the arrangements.

EVERHART

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Ersie Swing Everhart, 83, the wife of the late James Franklin Everhart, died Monday at the Brian Center Nursing Home. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Reformed United Church of Christ. Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

HAINES

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Bryna Singleton Haines, 83, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Haines was born Feb. 14, 1919, to Juey Singleton in Waynesburg, Ky. She was a member of United Baptist Church and a former member of Forest Hill Baptist Church and had been a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center. Her husband, Marion Delbert Haines, and her mother preceded her in death. Surviving Mrs. Haines are two sons, Marion D. Haines Jr. of Port Saint John, Fla. and Lawrence N. Haines of Pfafftown; two sisters, Clora Burnett of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Emma Spangler of Frederick, Md.; and a grandson, Benjamin Haines of Cocoa, Fla. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the Alzheimer's Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter No. 999, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.

HUTCHINS

CLEMMONS -Mr. Dan Henry Hutchins Jr., 61, of Lyons Drive, died March 17, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on April 22, 1940, to Dan and Nellie Nicks Hutchins. Mr. Hutchins was of the Baptist faith and was formerly employed by Hanes Dye & Finishing Co. and was the owner of City-Wide Delivery Service. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Danny Lee Hutchins; and a daughter, Brenda Sue Hutchins. He is survived by his wife, Janette Rivers Hutchins; three daughters, Kathy Tullock of Bethania, Sharon Franklin and her husband, Larry, of Yadkinville and Donna Goins of East Bend; a son, Gary Hutchins of Clemmons; a stepson, Brian Todd and a stepdaughter, Patricia Todd, both of Yadkinville; seven grandchildren; a great- grandchild, and a stepgranddaughter. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ottis Hurst officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HUTCHINS

Mr. Roger James Hutchins, 82, 3305 Heitman Drive, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at his home. He was born in Yadkin County Oct. 3, 1919, to James and Nancy Mills Hutchins. Mr. Hutchins served in the U.S. Army in the early 1940s and later in the Army Reserve. He was employed by Hooker Furniture Co., where he retired after 17 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Walser Hutchins; four brothers, Curfield, Foster, Jewitt, and Quit Hutchins; and a sister, Gypsie Fowler. Surviving are his children, Glenda (Virgil) Fulk of King, Dennis (Sarah) Hutchins of Mooresville, Ron Hutchins of High Point and Tammy (John) Hardy of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel, East Bend by the Rev. Clayton Elbertson and the Rev. Bobby Holcomb. Burial will follow in the Forbush Friends cemetery.

KORITNIK

Julia Marie Dolinar Koritnik of 1639 Fairview Blvd. died peacefully in her sleep at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem on Thursday, March 14, following a stroke in her home March 9. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril M. Koritnik. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Koritnik of Winston-Salem and Mary Theresa Koritnik of Eugene, Ore.; a son, Dr. Donald Koritnik of Fort Wayne, Ind., and his wife Dee; and four grandchildren, Megan and Amanda Koritnik of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Briana Axline and Keith Axline of Eugene, Ore. Julie's funeral will be with family and friends in her hometown of Rock Springs, Wyo. Details are pending. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1919 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, followed by a reception for neighbors and friends. The family asks that any memorial contributions in Julie's name be sent to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MARBAKER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Rexford Clarence Marbaker, 48, died Saturday, March 16, 2002. He was born May 28, 1953, in Evansville, Ind,. to Clarence Edward and Betty Beard Marbaker. Mr. Marbaker was employed with Time Warner Cable. He is survived by his mother and father of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Chasity Marbaker of Winston-Salem and Allison Marbaker of Clemmons; a brother, Laurin Marbaker of Winston-Salem; his fiancee, Ellen Andrews, and son, Justin, of Yadkinville; and a number of aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Jerry Tedder. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MAST

ZIONVILLE - Mr. Bert T. Mast, 99, died Monday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, Boone.

McCOY

Mrs. Daisy Penn McCoy of 1103 E. 15th St. was born March 9, 1931, in Winston-Salem to the late Peter T. and Minnie Wall Penn. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the public schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School. Mrs. McCoy furthered her education at Forsyth Technical Community College, was an assistant nurse at Kate B. Reynolds Hospital and a retiree of Forsyth Medical Center after 25 years of service. Mrs. McCoy was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served in various auxiliaries for many years. She departed this life Friday, March 15, 2002, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Felix McCoy of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Peggy McCoy Wilborne of Washington, D.C.; a son, the Rev. Christopher E. McCoy (Thelma) of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, D'Tondja McCoy, Antonio D. McCoy, Jamal Wilborne Sr. and Christopher J. McCoy; two great-grandchildren, Keenan E. McCoy and Jamal Wilborne Jr.; two sisters, Margretta Penn of Winston-Salem and Josephine Penn Chapman of Detroit, Mich.; three brothers, Percy (Emma) Penn of Winston-Salem, Charles Penn of Detroit and Raleigh Penn of Farrockaway, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Shiloh Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul A. Lowe officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. McKENZIE

GALAX, Va. - Mr. Melvin Hurley McKenzie, 80, the husband of the late Geneva Irene Horton McKenzie, died March 17, 2002, at Waddell Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Grayson County to Alexander Ballard McKenzie and Harriet Leonard McKenzie. The funeral will be March 19, 2002, at Mount Pisgah Church of Christ with Lawrence Warden and the Rev. Ted Bartlett officiating. Interment will be at McKenzie cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post No. 1115. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Melva and Bill Reeves of Kernersville and Judy Farmer of Ennice; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Maggie McKenzie of Galax; a brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Wilma McKenzie of Galax; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

MEADOWS

KING - Mr. Stephen Alva Meadows, 43, of 119 Cascade Court, formerly of Princeton, W.Va., died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Born July 19, 1958, in Princeton, he was the son of Hughie and Eleanor Hatten Meadows of Princeton. He had been a resident of North Carolina for the past 17 years, moving there from Princeton. He was an electrician at Duracell Battery in Lexington. He was a member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton and was a 1976 graduate of Princeton High School. Additional survivors include his wife, Phyllis Edna Taylor Meadows, of King; a daughter, Ashley Meadows, and a son Stephen Meadows II, both of King, NC; a stepson, Chris Taylor, of Natural Bridge, Va.; two stepgrandchildren; a brother, Gary Meadows, of Birmingham; and a sister, Rebecca Caldwell and husband, Wade, of Princeton. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton with the Rev. Greg Godwin officiating. Friends may call at the Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 6 to 8 this evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson St., Bluefield, WV 24701.

POLAND

Mr. Ellison Webber Poland, 80, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born to Ira William and Stella Beatty Poland, in Glencoe, Ky., Jan. 8, 1922. Mr. Poland was a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He received an honorable discharge and started the industrial-arts program in the Forsyth County school system in 1948. He later went on to work for Western Electric for 22 years and retired to start his own business, Foltz and WEE Ceramics, which he and his wife Wilma ran for 13 years. He had many interests throughout his life, but his most constant passion was the art of magic. He wrote and published three books on sleight of hand which are still studied today. Mr. Poland is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wilma Strohmier Poland; his two sons, Larry (Harriet) of Boston, Mass., and Bruce of Winston-Salem; as well as three grandchildren, Lindsay, Ruth and Marshall, all of Boston. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

SHEETS

LANSING - Joyce Sheets, 61, the wife of Ronnie Sheets, died Saturday at her son's home. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson.
