WILKESBORO - Mrs. Becky Comer Mann, 54, of Barracks Hill Drive died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with Father J. Kenneth Asel, Father Frank McKenzie and the Rev. Kay Rackley officiating. A private committal service will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Mann was born May 22, 1947, in Wilkes County to Charles Mitchell and Jean Rupard Comer. She was a college English instructor at Wilkes Community College. She is survived by her husband, Pete M. Mann of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Auther and Jennifer Mann Lankford of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Kelly and Alison Mann Pipes of Wilkesboro; her mother, Jean Rupard Comer of Union Grove; a sister, Alcy Prevette of North Wilkesboro; two brothers, Terry Comer and Tim Comer, both of Union Grove; a grandson, Austin Lankford of Lawrenceville, Ga. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at St. Paul's Episcopal Church's Common Area. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Yadkin River Greenway, P.O. Box 191, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

McBRIDE

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Mary Ann Hill McBride, 78, died at 8:24 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Golden Age Nursing Home, Lexington, after a period of declining health. She was born June 6, 1923, in Rowan County to the late Jennie Belle Trexler Hill and the late James Roby Hill. Mrs. McBride attended Rowan County schools, was a home-maker and was a member of Wayside Baptist Church, Lexington. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kay Elizabeth McBride. Surviving are her husband, Curtis McBride of the home, whom she married June 29, 1940; two sons, Rick L. McBride and wife Julie of Winston-Salem and Larry S. McBride and wife Peggie of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, the Rev. Fred Hill of Salisbury; and three grandchildren, Mary McBride, Owen McBride and Sarah McBride, all of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Lyerly Funeral Home's James C. Lyerly Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Hill, her brother, and the Rev. Roger Lackey, the pastor of Wayside Baptist Church, Lexington, officiating. Burial will be at Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery, Rowan County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St., Salisbury. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Sham-rock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298; or a charity of the donor's choice.

McCARN

LEXINGTON - Laniey Elizabeth McCarn, the infant daughter of Travis Kent McCarn and Tanya Everhart McCarn, died Sunday at Thomasville Medical Center. A private graveside service will be Wednesday at Beck's United Church of Christ cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

McCOY

Mrs. Daisy Penn McCoy of 1103 E. 15th St. was born March 9, 1931, in Winston-Salem to the late Peter T. and Minnie Wall Penn. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the public schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School. Mrs. McCoy furthered her education at Forsyth Technical Community College, was an assistant nurse at Kate B. Reynolds Hospital and a retiree of Forsyth Medical Center after 25 years of service. Mrs. McCoy was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served in various auxiliaries for many years. She departed this life Friday, March 15, 2002, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Felix McCoy of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Peggy McCoy Wilborne of Washington, D.C.; a son, the Rev. Christopher E. McCoy (Thelma) of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, D'Tondja McCoy, Antonio D. McCoy, Jamal Wilborne Sr. and Christopher J. McCoy; two great-grandchildren, Keenan E. McCoy and Jamal Wilborne Jr.; two sisters, Margretta Penn of Winston-Salem and Josephine Penn Chapman of Detroit, Mich.; three brothers, Percy (Emma) Penn of Winston-Salem, Charles Penn of Detroit and Raleigh Penn of Farrockaway, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Shiloh Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul A. Lowe officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. (Hooper)

MILLER

Mrs. Millie H. Miller, a.k.a. Mrs. Emma, 83, of 2787 Piedmont Circle died March 16, 2002, at her home. She was born July 28, 1918, in Cordova, S.C., to Jervy Haywood and Fannie Corner Haywood. She was a member of Christ Temple Church of God in Christ. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Miller; and a sister, Agnes Lanier. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wendy Miller (Turner) and Lillian Page; two sisters, Mrs. Frances H. Gray and Mrs. Betty Smith; four brothers, Jerry Haywood (Delisha), Oscar (Juanita) Haywood, Berkley Haywood (Evelyn) and Clyde Haywood; grandchildren Rosa Lanier and Ann Plowden (Sonny); and a great-grandson, Tracy Richardson (Aldina). Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gilmore Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Elder Walker officiating and Minister Charles McMurry giving the eulogy. Interment will be at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The funeral cortege will leave from 1028 E. 17th St. Arrangements entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

ZIONVILLE - Mrs. Ozell Mae Roark Shelton, 86, died Tuesday. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Potter-Main cemetery in Creston. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home of Boone is in charge of arrangements.

WALL

MOUNT AIRY - Miss Mallie Savannah Wall, 96, of Central Continuing Care Nursing Center died Monday evening, March 18, 2002, after a short illness. Mallie was born Nov. 8, 1905, in Surry County to the late Ed and Hester Danley Wall. She was the oldest living member of Rock Hill Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mrs. Leva Bowman of Ararat, and Stella and Sam Marion of Dobson; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Caleb Wall of Dobson and Harvey and Evelyn Wall of Ararat; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Rock Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the services. The Rev. Milton Sewell and the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt will conduct the services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. June Shinault, 3881 Siloam Road Dobson, NC 27017.

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Elgin Thomas Whitaker, 77, of Howardtown Road died Monday at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. Eaton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

WHITAKER

SILOAM - Mrs. Lillie Frances Wolfe Whitaker, 90, of 6434 Siloam Road, the widow of Ellis Jackson Whitaker, passed away Monday, March 18, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Whitaker was born July 8, 1911, in Surry County, the daughter of the late William B. and Mary E. "Betty" Jones Wolfe. She was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ruth and Ray Mickey of 1361 Stony Ridge Road, Pinnacle, NC 27043, and Payge and Ralph Hardy of 119 Eliza Lane, Siloam, NC 27047; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Kathryn Whitaker of 1869 Old Hollow Road, Walker-town, NC 27051, Don and Shelba Whitaker of 150 Bull Run Lane, Ararat, NC 27007, Phil and Phyllis Whitaker of 193 Sunrise Ave., Mount Airy, NC 27030, and Lanny and Linda Whitaker of P.O. Box 36, Siloam, NC 27047; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sadie Davis of Mount Airy, Carrie and Roy Casstevens of Dobson and Hester and Carl Simpson of Ararat; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Kemp and Helen Wolfe of Carthage, Ira and Clara Wolfe of Mount Airy and Jewel Wolfe of Winston-Salem. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Marion and Mae Coe; and three brothers, Willie Wolfe, Edd Wolfe and Roger Wolfe. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Elder Elbert Hunter and the Rev. Bill Faw. Burial will be in the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cem-etery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northern Hospice, P.O. Box 6626, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to Surry Friends of Seniors, 1218 State St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. ALDERMAN

KING - Polly "MawMaw" Rogers Alderman, 82, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Scenic View Health and Rehabilitation Center in King. She was born Sept. 29, 1919, in Asheboro to Lemuel H. and Esther T. Rogers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Alderman on Jan. 23, 1986, and seven brothers. She was a member the Rural Hall Church of Christ. Surviving are two sons and daughters in-law, Jimmie R. Alderman and wife, Karen of Rockingham, and William E. Alderman and wife, Nancy of King; a daughter, Rebecca Alderman of King; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, with John E. Snow, Minister officiating. There will be no visitation period at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. BARE

JEFFERSON - Franklin Eugene "Sonny" Bare, 62, of Jefferson, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Bare was born in Ashe County on Sept. 27, 1939, to Estell Eugene and Georgia Gladys Bare. Sonny was retired from the United States Army where he served his country for 25 years. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in Vietnam. Survivors include two sons, Jeffery Bare of Germany, Carlos Bare of North Carolina; five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bare Hall of Laurel Springs, Mrs. Sue Baker of Salisbury, Mrs. Nancy Bare Miller, Mrs. Wanda Bare Sprangler, and Mrs. Wilma Flannagen, all of Jefferson. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Greer and Pastor Keith Elledge officiating. Interment will follow in the Roans Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with military rites. WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Lorine Bottomley Boles, 73, formerly of Walkertown, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She had been a resident of Oak Summit Nursing Center for some time and was very active in the activities there. She was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Alleghany County (Saddle Mountain) to Cleve and Annie Bottomley. Mrs. Boles was preceded in death by her brother, Lloyd Bottomley, and her sisters, Alberdeen White, Gladys Bedsaul and Cecil Bottomley, and by her husband, Carl Alfred Boles, in 1972. She is survived by five children, Harry A. Boles and wife Dianne of Walkertown, Carl A. Boles and wife Beckie, Margaret Boles Newsom, Joseph E. Boles and wife Donna and Jeffrey W. Boles and wife Deborah, all of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren, Brian Boles of Kernersville, Christopher Boles of Walkertown, Carl "Al" Boles Jr. of Arlington, Phillip Newsom of Winston-Salem, Angela Newsom of Charlotte, Jama Melton and Jennile Henderson, both of Spartanburg, S.C., Heather Boles and Casey Boles, both of Winston-Salem, Chris Boles of Thomasville and Kenneth Griffin. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters, Bill and Faye Bottomley of Galax, Va., Lucille Ayers of Low Gap, Cora Sue Brown, Junior and Carol Jean Bottomley, all of Glade Valley, Bobby and JoAnn Bottomley, Dennis and Sandra Bottomley, Blan and Martha Bottomley, Gencie Finney and Zena Todd, all of Ennice, and Ben and Gail Bottomley of Sparta; eight great-grandchildren and 36 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday, March 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Martin and the Rev. Beverly Isley-Landreth officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. CHAPPELL

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Barry Lynn Chappell, 47, of Hamptonville, a loving son, brother, uncle and inspiration to all, died Saturday, March 23, 2002. Barry was born Feb. 1, 1955, in Surry County to Julius C. "Junior" Chappell Jr. and Betty Bryant Chappell. He was employed with Freightliner Corp. and was an active member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Barry was preceded in death by a nephew, Mark Colton Chappell. Surviving are his parents of Hamptonville; two sisters, Vickie Styers and husband, Rex of Advance; Robin Collins and husband, Danny of Hamptonville; a brother, Mark Chappell and wife, Tammy of Hamptonville; nieces Casey and Kimberly Styers, Lindsay Collins; a nephew, Chandler Chappell "My Buddy" and Barry's boys, Hogan and Bugsy. The Funeral service for Mr. Chappell will be held 3 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, at Mountain View Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Tucker and Barry's uncle, the Rev. Albert Everidge. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Yadkinville, N.C.

BOONE - Mr. Billy J. Cook, 83, of Boone died March 21 at home. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Hampton Funeral Service in Boone is in charge.

CROUSE

STATE ROAD - Mr. Junior Ray Crouse, 52, of Old Highway 21 passed away Friday, March 22, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Crouse was born Jan. 5, 1950, in Raleigh County, W.Va., to Coster William and Ethel Crouse. Mr. Crouse retired after 21 years from Swift's Body Shop and was a self-employed auto-body repairman for 10 years. Mr. Crouse was preceded in death by his father, Coster William Crouse. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Crouse of the home; a daughter, Michelle Crouse of State Road; his mother, Ethel Childress of State Road; a brother and sister-in-law, Braxton (Betty Jo) Crouse of Boonville; and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Doug) Flint of Dobson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Chapel by the Rev. John Attaway. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mr. Crouse will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hodges Funeral Home, Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County or Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Hodges Funeral Home, Elkin, is serving the Crouse family.

GRIGGS

Mrs. Kathleen B. Griggs of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002. She was born to Frank and Ellen Cummings Bowman on Jan. 6, 1913, in Forsyth County. She married Sparford Cleveland Griggs on Aug. 10, 1931, in High Point. He preceded her in death in 1993. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., with over 40 years of service. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Spaugh and her husband, Bill of Winston-Salem, and Patrice Munsel Fields and her husband, William of Durham; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Spainhour of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at Vogler and Son's Main Street Chapel. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. J. Marion Rector will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

HENDERSON

UNION GROVE - Mr. Tommie Talmadge Henderson, 90, of Hunting Creek Road, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Henderson was born Oct. 9, 1911, in Wilkes County to William and Julia Henderson. Mr. Henderson was a self-employed carpenter and was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Sallie P. Henderson of the home; a son, Gene Henderson of Union Grove; three daughters, Barbara Darnell of Fayetteville, Mildred Johnson of Winston-Salem and Rebecca Shadrick of King; a sister, Ella Campbell of Mocksville; seven grandchildren, Darron Henderson, Billy Henderson, Mark Darnell, Linda Boruff, Tina Dawson, Phyllis Voigt and Diane Garity; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, at Sweet Home Baptist Church by the Rev. R.C. Redmon Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Henderson will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

KIGER

WELCOME - Mr. James Henry Kiger, 83, of 197 Cranford St., Welcome, died Saturday morning March 23, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Kiger was born in Stokes County on June 21, 1918, to F.M. Kiger and Sally Jane Covington Kiger. He was retired from Burlington Furniture Industries. Surviving are his wife, Dixie Holyfield Kiger of the home; a son, James Leroy Kiger and wife, Frances of Welcome; sisters; Rena Downs of Lexington and Grace Tech of Arcadia; grandchildren, Jamie Clodfelter of Midway and Maria Shoaf of Welcome. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. on Monday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel conducted by the Rev. Mark Blair. Burial will be at Welcome Baptist Church cemetery. The body will be at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel, however the family will receive friends at the home, 197 Cranford St., Welcome. Memorials may be directed to Welcome Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 269, Welcome, N.C. 27374.
