DOBSON - Jim C. Mitchell, 83, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002 at Central View Baptist Church.

MITCHELL

TAMPA, Fla. - Mrs. Sadie F. Mitchell, 89, died March 19, 2002. A native of Rockingham County and a resident of Tampa for the past 10 years, Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Westshore Christian Church. Survivors include her beloved daughter, Molly Butler; grandchildren Charles H. Butler, the Rev. Robert Eugene Butler, Carolyn Rogers and Becky Speer; a brother, Cleo Freeman; sisters Ruth Hicks and Lizzie Alley; stepsons Russell and Stedman Mitchell; a stepdaughter, Betty Lee Harris; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Burroughs Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Eden United Methodist Church cemetery, Rockingham County. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westshore Christian Church, or First Baptist Church of Port Tampa.

MOON

PFAFFTOWN - Funeral services for Mrs. Carol Copeland Moon, 87, of Capp Road will be conducted 2:30 p.m. today at Mizpah Moravian Church. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Mrs. Moon died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the home of a great-niece in Palmyra, Va.

MURRAY

LEXINGTON - Mary Virginia Surratt Murray, 91, of Piedmont Center, formerly of West Center Street, Lexington, died 8:35 a.m. Saturday March 23, 2003, in Piedmont Retirement Center, Thomasville after six weeks of declining health. Mrs. Murray was born Dec. 6, 1910, in Davidson County to Kearney Eli Surratt and Sirona Elizabeth Leonard Surratt. She was a hostess for First United Methodist Church where she was a member, and a member of Circle Ten and Garden Club. Surviving are her daughters, Elizabeth M. Thomas of High Point, Martha M. Harris and husband, John of Winston-Salem; a brother, Kearncy Leonard Surratt of Lexington; a sister, Mildred Dieffenderfer of Brookridge Retirement Center of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Carolyn Ann Kund and husband, Bill of High Point, David Claude Harris and wife, Tina of Lexington, and Emily Marshall Harris of Hickory. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lexington City cemetery conducted by the Rev. John K. Ferree and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown. Burial will be at Lexington City cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of the brother, Leonard Surratt, 517 Woodlawn Drive, Lexington.

NEAL

Cordelia F. Neal, 46, died March 22, 2002. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. March 25, 2002, in Pine Hall Baptist Church cemetery in Pine Hall. Arrangements by Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

PETREE

Mr. Norman Howard Petree of Winston-Salem, 73, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002, after several years of declining health. He was born April 17, 1928, to George Edward and Ollie Bell Dickerson Petree in Forsyth County. Mr. Petree retired for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 29.78 years of service. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, teacher, usher, and on many other committees and helped with Scouts and RA's. Mr. Petree served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He participated in "Operation Ivy" atomic tests at Eniwetok Proving Grounds, Marshall Islands in the fall of 1952, aboard the USS Curtis AV4, seaplane tender, which had been converted into an atomic experimental ship. Preceding him in death are his parents; three sisters, Esterline Jones, Verna Smith and Vina Smith; and seven brothers, George, Theodore, Frank, Raymond, James, John Henry and William Petree. Mr. Petree is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth (Lib) Rule Petree of the home; a daughter, Kim Eplee-Benson and husband, Tony; and two grandsons, Christopher and Ryan Eplee, all of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Margaret Boggs of Lewisville; and a brother, Charles Herman Petree of Winston-Salem. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Monday, March 25, 2002, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with Dr. James A. Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family wishes to thank the oncology nurses, Jan, Robin, and Betty, along with Drs. Zekan and Martin Murphy of the Winston-Salem Health Care for the compassionate medical care provided during his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 3733 Ogburn Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

PHILLIPS

EAST BEND - Mrs. Lillian Wooten Phillips, 83, of 3837 Forbush Road died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Yadkin County on June 17, 1918, to Edgar and Myrtle Hutchens Wooten. She was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting. Mrs. Phillips was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lee Phillips; and a son, Grady Lee Phillips. Surviving are a daughter, Frances (Dan) Bertotti of Boca Raton, Fla.; a son, George (Carla) Phillips of East Bend; a special friend, Susan Wiley of New Hampshire; her brothers and sisters, Benbow (Sadie) Wooten, Ethel Griffin, Vicy Key, Cora Hutchens, Edsel (Marie) Wooten, Edgar Vernon (Betty) Wooten, Allen (Peggy) Wooten, all of East Bend, and Barbara (Frank) Gentry of Yadkinville; grandchildren Shannon and Mandy Phillips, Brandy (Mark) Brandon, Sherri Crutchley, Myra Hicks, Heather (Neil) Sarin, Candace Bertotti, Charlene Marhenke, Darlene Eads and Robin Campbell; and great-grandchildren Brooke Crutchley and Madilyn Brandon. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Forbush Friends Meeting by the Rev. Jake Penley. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Huff Funeral Home, East Bend. POSTON

WEBER CITY, Va. - Winiford W. Poston, 84, died in Buford, Ga., on Friday, March 22, 2002. He was born on June 5, 1917, in Washington County, Va., to George Leonard Poston and Maude Jane Terry Poston. His parents and a brother, Claude Poston, precede him in death. He is survived by brothers, John Poston of Honaker, Va., Roscoe Poston of Abington, Va., Charley Poston of Honaker, Va., Walter Poston of Port Charlotte, Fla.; sisters, Edith Price of Rural Retreat, Va., Leola Price of Lebanon, Va., and Jean Jackson of Rosedale, Va. Mr. Poston is a former resident of Kingsport, Tenn., San Francisco, Calif., and Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Church of Christ. His wife, Madeline Thompson Poston of the home, survives him. Son, W.W. (Bud) Poston Jr. of Charleston, S.C., and a daughter, Jane Poston Gibson of Winston-Salem, also survive him. In addition, three grandchildren, Jennifer Foster of Larkspur, Calif., Julie Grant of Charlotte, and Alan Poston of Charlotte, and five great-grandchildren. Family visitation will be on Sunday, March 24, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home. The Rev. Joey Gafford will conduct the funeral on Monday, March 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, Va. Burial will follow at Holston View cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.

SARI

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. F. John Sari III, 60, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, March 22, 2002, after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 17, 1941, in Port Huron, Mich. He was a mathematics graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit. Upon graduation he joined the General Electric Co. participating in its Manufacturing Management Training Program. John worked for Metridata Computing Inc. in Louisville, Ky., and was vice president of Consulting Service for Arista Manufacturing Services, a Xerox company in Winston-Salem. He was a principal in the Oliver Wight Group and president of John Sari and Co., an independent consulting and education firm. John was an active speaker and past president of the Piedmont Triad Chapter of American Production and Inventory Control Society. He was also a member of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. He is survived by his wife, Marion; children, John Sari, Jim and Lisa Sari, Jennifer and Liston Moser; grandchildren, Sam, Hannah, and Jack Sari; and his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Jeanne Beauvais, Cynthia and James Vigrass, Patricia and Andrew Spear, Pamela Behrens, James and Cheryl Sari, Drs. Colleen Sari and John Valentich, Mark and Tina Sari, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 25, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society , 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Suite 462, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SEAFORD

ADVANCE - Mr. Reginald Jackson Seaford, 69, of N.C. Hwy 801 South, died at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem Saturday morning after a short illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body will remain at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville.

SEVERT

WEST JEFFERSON - Mrs. Maude Hurley Severt, 86, of West Jefferson died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Severt was born in Ashe County, Oct. 14, 1915, to William and Molly Phipps Hurley. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Bartley Severt, and a son, Wayne Kilby Severt. Survivors include a son, James Franklin "Chuck" Severt of Advance; five daughters, Charlotte Stinnett of Shelby, Myrtle S. Worley of Apollo Beach, Fla., Pat Goss of West Jefferson, Shirley James of Charlotte, Debbie Jones of West Jefferson; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson, with the Rev. Steve LeaShomb and the Rev. Russell Sheets officiating. Interment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Sunday evening at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. SHEEK

YADKINVILLE -Mr David Shore Sheek, 50, of Swannanoa, and formerly of Yadkinville passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Hendersonville. He was born Oct. 10, 1951, in Yadkin County to Henry Gray and Margaret Shore Sheek. His funeral arrangements are incomplete with Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville serving the family.

SMITH

Mrs. Beulah Elizabeth Whicker Smith, 88, of 6065 Friendship-Ledford Road, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Dec. 6, 1913, in Forsyth County a daughter of John Elijah and Augusta Pegram Whicker. Mrs. Smith was an avid gardener and farmed with her husband for many years. She was a member of New Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She was married July 12, 1944, to Lindsay Allen Smith. He died Oct. 18, 1989. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Rosetta Whicker, Alma Murray and Reba Beeson; and a brother, Newton Whicker. Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Judy S. Townsend of 198 W. Bridge Road, Winston-Salem and Mrs. Louallan S. Hedgecock and husband Art of 3079 Abbotts Creek Church Road, Kernersville; a brother, James Whicker of Kernersville; a sister, Mrs. Clara Dwiggins of Oak Ridge; and four grandchildren, Chip Townsend, Cathy Falkson and husband Fritz, Allen Hedgecock and Madison Hedgecock. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Mount Vernon United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. David Nolan. Memorials may be directed to New Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 6408 Friendship-Ledford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. SMITH

Mrs. Jessie Rector Smith, 78, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday morning at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 18, 1923, to Robert Lee and Lura Edwards Rector in Sparta. She was a member of Kerwin Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed working in her garden and loved to crochet. She is preceded in death by her sister, Reba Estep and a brother, Liford Rector. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Dallas E. Smith of the home; a daughter, Ms. Dana Robertson of Winston Salem; two sons Randy Smith of Winston Salem, and Harold Smith and wife, Jan of King; five grandchildren, Laura Edwards, Katie and Shalon Smith, Kim Wilson and Toby Robertson; four great grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Cameron and Rachael Edwards and Chloe May; also surviving is a very special friend and companion Rusty McGee Smith of the home; a sister, Mrs. Lola McCarter of Pennsylvania; three brothers, Warren Rector of Virginia, Louis Rector of California, and Bain Rector of Maryland. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, March 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Joe Myers officiating at Westlawn Memorial Gardens. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family. Memorials may be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SWAIN

WALKERTOWN -Ms. Sally D. Swain died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at her home. She was born on Nov. 11, 1960, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Harold Gray Swain Sr. and Jimmie Saunders Swain. She was a lifetime member of Love's United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful member of the Orin Sawyer Sunday School Class. Sally was a "dancing boot" with the Walkertown Boosters' Club. She was a graduate of East Forsyth High School and Forsyth Technical College. She was a licensed practical nurse in a nursing home and was a dedicated volunteer and award-winning fund-raiser for the National Kidney Foundation for many years. Surviving are a brother, H. Gray (Sonny) Swain Jr. and his wife Denise Swain; a sister, Lee S. LaVallee and her husband Michael J. LaVallee; three nieces, five nephews and a special uncle, Jack Palmer. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Love's United Methodist Church, in Walkertown, by the Rev. David Calhoun. Visitation will be at the church, one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Gardens of Memory Mausoleum, Walkertown. Sally was beloved by her family and many special friends in the community, her church, and at the Salem Kidney Center who so graciously embraced her over the years. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Kidney Center, 2705 Boulder Park Court, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 and the American Diabetes. Association, Memorial and Honor Program-NCC, P.O. TALLY

Mrs. Emma Sally Tally, 69, a longtime resident of Winston-Salem, died unexpectedly March 22, 2002, at her home. She was born May 24, 1932, in Stokes County, the daughter of the late George Watson and Tempie Snyder Smith. Mrs. Tally was the first civilian employee to retire, with 30 years of service in the records division, from the Winston-Salem Police Department. She was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesley Asbury Sunday school class, a member of United Methodist Women and was involved in the school of spiritual enrichment as a cook. Five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Amanda Tally Nunn and husband James of Raleigh; a son, Thomas Dwayne Tally of the home; a granddaughter, Genieve Marie Nunn of Raleigh; two brothers, Luther Smith of Madison and Hassel Smith of Lawsonville; two sisters, Edith Gilley of Lawsonville and Lillie Violet Braswell of Reidsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held, following the funeral, at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Sandy Ridge. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 3819 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

UTT

Arlos Utt, 82, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He is survived by his loving sister, Rebecca Hepler. A service of remembrance will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

BECK

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Margaret Moore Beck, 81, of Raymond Street died on Sunday, March 24, 2002, at her residence. Born in Forsyth County on Nov. 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Blaine and Maye Calloway Moore. She retired as a nurse assistant at the Blumenthal Home, was a member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary. On Oct. 15, 1965, she married Walter T. Beck, who preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 2001. A son and daughter-in-law, Mickey Walter and Ernestine Beck of Mocksville, and a daughter, Brenda Beck Huff of Mocksville; a special brother-in-law, Earl Beck of Mocksville; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many special friends and neighbors survive Mrs. Beck. In addition to her parents and husband, two brothers, B.C. Moore and Bennie Moore, preceded Mrs. Beck in death. Funeral services for Mrs. Beck will be on Monday evening, March 25, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Brad Holliman officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until the funeral hour at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. A graveside committal service for Mrs. Beck will be conducted on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Chestnut Grove U.M.C. cemetery Fund or to Hospice of Davie County. Davie Funeral Service Inc., 416 Valley Road, is serving the family of Mrs. Beck.
