BEESON

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. C. A. "Meanie" Beeson, 89, of 5440 Stigall Road died Saturday March 23, 2002, at the Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Beeson was born in Guilford County, a son of the late Frances William and Sarah Ann Carter Beeson and was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church for 77 years where he served as treasurer for over 25 years and was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Men. Mr. Beeson was a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service with 32 years service and served as assistant postmaster for seven years at the Kernersville post office and was an avid sportsman. His wife, Carrie Sapp Beeson, a daughter, Sylvia B. Prescott, and a son Donald Wesley Beeson, preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughters, Patsy (Bill) Pegg, Carolyn (Mike) all of Kernersville; seven sons and their wives, Frankie (Sandra) Beeson, Richard (Sue) Beeson, Monty (Regina) Beeson and Clarence Keith Beeson all of Kernersville, Jimmy (Sue) Beeson of Summerfield, Randy (Linda) Beeson of Houston, Texas, Christopher (Tami) Beeson of Lincolnton; a brother, Kemp Beeson of Kernersville; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Howard Fleming and the Rev. David Duncan with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1018 Piney Grove Rd. BOOKER

GERMANTON - Mr. John Fritz Booker Sr., 79, of 6639 Andes St., Germanton, husband of Mrs. Erma White Booker, died Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Booker was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Surry County to the late John and Annie Miller Booker. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II and a retired salesman for The Hardware Store. He was a former deputy sheriff with the Surry County Sheriff's Department and a member of the Bannertown Ruritan Club. Mr. Booker was involved with Boy Scout Troop #427 and was member of the King American Legion Post #290. He was a member of the Germanton Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Erma W. Booker of the home, two daughters and sons-in-law, Fritzi and Brooks Moore, Chesterfield, S.C., Pam and Allen Boles of King; a son, John Booker Jr., of Burlington; two grandchildren and a spouse, Brooke Tolbert of Winston-Salem, Neil and Amy Tolbert of Winston-Salem; three step-grandchildren, Heath Moore of Chesterfield, S.C., Kelli Sekits of King, Leigh Ann Lawrence of King; and step-great-grandchild, Erykah Lawrence of King; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Harold Gillespie of Mount Airy; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Warren and Edith Booker of Mount Airy and Maude Booker of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Booker was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Booker. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Dennis Collins and the Rev. Terry Ragsdale with burial to follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home where his body will remain until the hour of the service. CRAVER

Mr. Carrol Mickey Craver, 77, formerly of Konnoak Drive, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Craver was born July 16, 1924, in Winston-Salem to Zula Hinkle and Mickey Manual Craver. Mr. Craver was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Russell Hartman Craver; and sister-in-law, Essie Craver. Mr. Craver was a graduate of Gray High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A World War II veteran of the European Theater, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He remained active in the 563rd AAA Veterans Associations as long as his health permitted. Mr. Craver was a member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church since the 1930s, serving as a lay leader. He was a long-time member and past president of the Twin Cities Lions Club and recipient of the Melvin Jones Award.. He was married Feb. 11, 1950, to Lois Hartman, who survives of the home. He is also survived by three sons and their families, C. Mickey Craver Jr. and wife Jane of Huntsville, Ronald "Ronnie" Craver, and Randolph "Randy" Craver and wife Sharon, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren survive, Laura Craver Miller and husband Daniel of Farmington, Kristi, Justin, Jason and Jennifer Craver of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews. Mr. Craver was the president of Craver's Country Ham House. In cooperation with the N.C. State University Food Sciences Division, Mr. Craver and other small meat processors in the Southeast were instrumental in the commercialization of country-ham curing following World War II. He was a member of the American Meat Processors Association, and the North Carolina-South Carolina Meat Processors Association. Mr. Craver's "Olde Salem" country hams won numerous national awards at ham shows throughout the United States. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Central Terrace United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Greene and the Rev. John Spillman. Graveside service with military honors will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Central Terrace United Methodist Church, 3 E. Devonshire St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or to the Russell H. Craver Memorial Scholarship Fund, Bethesda Christian Academy, 450 S. Green St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

CULLER

PINNACLE - Mrs. Gertrude Turney Culler, 80, of Pinnacle passed away Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital. She was born March 5, 1922, in Surry County to Frank and Eliza Jane Ring Turney. Mrs. Culler was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her husband, Bufort Culler, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, B. Lester and Peggy Culler of Pinnacle, Donnie R. and Belinda Culler of East Bend, Dennis P. and Mitzi Culler of King, Leona Culler of Westfield; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nonnie E. Turney of King and Dazzie Marie "Duck" Hamlin of Vass. Mrs. Culler was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jerry Culler; three brothers, Jack, Hubert, and Frank Turney; and a sister, Minnie T. Hill. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. J.T. Byerly. Interment will follow in the Crestview Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Monday, March 25, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Stokes-Reynolds Long Term Care Center, P.O. CUMBIE

Mr. Thomas Aberham Cumbie, 91, formerly of Rural Hall, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, following a period of declining health. He was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Stokes County to the late John Lewis and Martha Hill Cumbie. Mr. Cumbie spent most of his life in Forsyth County and retired from Fogle Furniture Company. He was a devout Christian who lived as he believed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Krites, in 1992; three brothers and five sisters. Surviving are a brother, Albert Cumbie and wife, Adell, of Greensboro; a step-daughter, June Massey and husband, David, of Clemmons; three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The Rev. R. Zeno Groce will officiate. DELOACH

Mr. Roger Wood DeLoach, 81, of Longbow Road died at his home on March 23, 2002. He was born in Claxton, Ga., on May 31, 1920, to Henry Oscar and Lila Wood DeLoach Mr. DeLoach was retired from Southern Bell as the public-relations manager, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in WWII as a first lieutenant. He was a devoted member of Centenary United Methodist Church and its choir. Mr. DeLoach was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and Telephone Pioneers of America and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He was a self-taught master craftsman and, after retirement, taught himself the art of wood-carving. Surviving him are his wife, Dorothy Wright DeLoach of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Carol D. McNair and her husband Scott and Suzanne D. Smith and her husband Jim, both of Charlotte; three grandsons, Michael D. Wyche and his wife April of Monroe, D. Scott Smith and James Austin Smith, both of Charlotte; a great-granddaughter, Jordan Rose Wyche of Monroe, and several nieces and nephews. A committal service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, and a memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough and the Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church Music Department, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

JACKSON

BOONE - Mr. Thomas Reid Jackson, 94, a resident of Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, died Saturday evening, March 23, 2002, at Glenbridge. Born Nov. 3, 1907, in Watauga County, he was the son of Frank and Minnie Johnson Jackson. Known to many, as "Mr. Tom," he was a member of Bethel View United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. He also served as a church steward, lay speaker, and choir member and song leader. Mr. Jackson was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and taught in the Watauga County school system in both elementary and high school. He served in the N.C. State House of Representatives, as chairman of the Watauga County commissioners, as a member of the Watauga County Board of Education, as chairman of the ASCS office, and as chairman of the Watauga County Democratic Party. He was a truant officer for the Watauga County school system and employed at the ASU post office. Mr. Jackson was a lifelong cattle farmer. He is survived by a son, Kenneth Jackson and wife Elizabeth of Winston-Salem and Boone; a granddaughter, Barbara Aldridge and husband Eddie of Greensboro; a great-grandson, Matthew Jackson Aldridge of Greensboro; and a special nephew, John Jackson and his family of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Miller Jackson. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Bethel View United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dennis Spivey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the committal service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, NC 28607. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

KIGER

WELCOME - Mr. James Henry Kiger, 83, of 197 Cranford St., Welcome, died Saturday morning March 23, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Kiger was born in Stokes County on June 21, 1918, to F.M. Kiger and Sally Jane Covington Kiger. He was retired from Burlington Furniture Industries. Surviving are his wife, Dixie Holyfield Kiger, of the home; a son, James Leroy Kiger and wife, Frances, of Welcome; sisters Rena Downs of Lexington and Grace Tesh of Arcadia; and grandchildren Jamie Clodfelter of Midway and Marla Shoaf of Welcome. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel conducted by the Rev. Mark Blair. Burial will be at Welcome Baptist Church cemetery. The body will be at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel; however, the family will receive friends at the home, 197 Cranford St., Welcome. NANCE

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Reavis Nance, 87, of Yadkinville died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 28, 1914, to Julian and Mary Bryant Reavis. She was a loving mother and a homemaker. Mrs. Nance was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Nance; her parents; two brothers, Leo and Wade Reavis; two sisters, Bertha Buxton and Mattie Wishon. Surviving are two sons, Loyd (Faye) Nance and Larry (Edna) Nance of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Patty (Charles) Renegar, Betty (Odell) Haire, Debra (Larry) Childress of Yadkinville; eight grandchildren; Michael Nance, Phyllis Blackburn, Billy Nance, Kenneth Nance, Darrell Nance, Susan Soots, Jeremy Childress, Wesley Childress; two great-granddaughters; Morgan Nance and Savanna Childress; three sisters, Annie Nance, Blanche Wilmouth and Net Warden. The funeral service for Mrs. Nance will be held 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Gentry Family Yadkinville Chapel by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. Burial will follow in the Center United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Yadkinville. O'DONNELL

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Jean Marie Bates O'Donnell, 58, of Yadkinville died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. O'Donnell was born Sept. 28, 1943, in Pleasant Point, N.J., to Griffith and Ester Morris O'Donnell. She was a homemaker and was a volunteer for the deaf and hard of hearing. Jean also was an interpreter for the Yadkinville Elementary School, helped teach several sign-language classes, was a member of the Diabetic Support Group, a member of the Silent Dinner Club and was a former accountant. Mrs. O'Donnell was preceded in death by her father in 1996. Surviving are her husband, Richard Anthony O'Donnell Sr. of Yadkinville; two sons, Richard A. O'Donnell Jr. and wife Dee of Yadkinville and Griffith O'Donnell and wife Vicky of Yadkinville; her mother, Ester Morris of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Lindsay Marie O'Donnell, Kimberly Blair Dinkins, Kolton Eugene Dinkins; two sisters, Judy Bates and Susan Westervelt of Mount Airy. A memorial service for Mrs. O'Donnell will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Gentry Family Yadkinville Chapel by the Rev. Gary Foster. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. LEXINGTON - Brenda Louie Prince, 45, died March 23, 2002, at her home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial to be at Lexington City cemetery.

REECE

BOONE - Mrs. Madge Williams Reece, 86, of 7097 Old Highway 421 North, Zionville, wife of the late Vaughn J. Reece, died Saturday morning, March 23, 2002, at home. She was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Watauga County to the late Ed and Myra Jones Williams. She was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and earned a teaching certificate from Appalachian State Teachers College. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Mabel Elementary School for 28 years. Mrs. Reece was a charter member of Mabel Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a member and past Worthy Matron of Hope Chapter No.1 of Eastern Star and a member of the N.C. Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Huneycutt of Charlotte, Jane Vannoy and husband, Jay, of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Joe Proffitt of Zionville, John Vannoy and Jeffrey Vannoy, both of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Susie Isaacs and husband, Mike; two great-grandsons, Brad Isaacs and Chad Isaacs, all of Zionville; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Seehorn of Johnson City, Tenn., and Maude "Tincy" Wilson and husband, Clyde of Boone; a brother, J.B. Williams and wife, Lena of Black Mountain. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Dishman and Mrs. Louise Thomas; two brothers, Ralph Williams and Hite Williams. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mabel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carl Johnson and the Rev. Derick Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone. The family will receive friends this evening (Monday) from 7 to 8:30 at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone. SARI

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. F. John Sari III, 60, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, March 22, 2002, after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 17, 1941, in Port Huron, Mich. He was a mathematics graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit. Upon graduation he joined the General Electric Co., participating in its Manufacturing Management Training Program. John worked for Metridata Computing Inc. in Louisville, Ky., and was vice president of Consulting Service for Arista Manufacturing Services, a Xerox company in Winston-Salem. He was a principal in the Oliver Wight Group and president of John Sari and Co., an independent consulting and education firm. John was an active speaker and past president of the Piedmont Triad Chapter of American Production and Inventory Control Society. He was also a member of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. He is survived by his wife, Marion; children, John Sari, Jim and Lisa Sari, Jennifer and Liston Moser; grandchildren, Sam, Hannah, and Jack Sari; and his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Jeanne Beauvais, Cynthia and James Vigrass, Patricia and Andrew Spear, Pamela Behrens, James and Cheryl Sari, Drs. Colleen Sari and John Valentich, Mark and Tina Sari, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 25, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. SEAFORD

ADVANCE - Mr. Reginald Jackson Seaford, 69, of N.C. Hwy 801 South died Saturday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a sudden illness. Mr. Seaford was born in Davie County, Dec. 3, 1932, to the late Jack and Minnie Hamilton Seaford and had been a self-employed carpenter. He had worked with Daniels Construction and earlier was with the Spector Freight Liners with more than 23 years of service. He was a longtime faithful member of Fork Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon and director of the training union, served on the Church Building Committee and was a member of the Advanced Adult Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the VFW Post 3074 and the Reeds American Legion Post 162. He especially enjoyed auto racing and NASCAR. Mr. Seaford was a well-known handyman. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Laverne Gaither, Pauline Livengood and Venice Livengood; and two brothers, Dwight Seaford and Lee Seaford. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Dorcas Walser Seaford, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Robin) Sammons, of Mocksville; two sons, the Rev. Craig Seaford and his wife, Joy, of Mooresville, and Mike Seaford and his wife, Susan, of Advance; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Seaford, Joshua Seaford, Joseph Seaford, Jonathan Seaford, Jesse Seaford, Brittany Bailey, Brandi Seaford, Colby Seaford, and Tyler Seaford; three sisters, Jeannette Beane, Maxine Correll and Bernice Hinkle, all of Advance; and a brother, Bill Seaford, also of Advance. Mr. Seaford was a very supportive, loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Queen, the Rev. Will Pryor and the Rev. Craig Seaford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. and at other times at the residence in Advance. They request memorials be considered for the Robert Lee Seaford Scholarship Fund, c/o Mrs. Jane Jones, 477 Joe Road, Mocksville, N.C. 27028 or to the Bus Fund of Fork Baptist Church, 3140 US Hwy. 64 East, Mocksville, N.C. 27028. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services on Tuesday.

SEBASTIAN

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Dorris Absher Sebastian, 73, wife of Bryce Sebastian of Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, died Sunday morning at her home. Mrs. Sebastian was born April 9, 1928, in Wilkes County to Ochus Odell and Della Louisiana Rhoades Absher. Mrs. Absher was a retired nurse from Wilkes Regional Medical Center and a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are a son, Danny Bryce Sebastian of McGrady; two daughters, Jane S. Greene of Boone, Beth S. McEntire of Ellerbe; two brothers, Claudius Absher of McGrady, Richard Absher of North Wilkesboro and a sister, Sue Cashion of Wilkesboro; five granddaughters, and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Baptist Home Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Comer and the Rev. Amos Combs officiating. Burial will be in Pine View Baptist Church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8 tonight. SHEEK

SWANNANOA - Mr. David Shore Sheek, 50, formerly of Yadkinville, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Hendersonville. David was born Oct. 10, 1951, in Surry County to Henry Gray and Margaret Shore Sheek. He was a member of Center United Methodist Church in Yadkinville and was a former member of the Center Bluegrass Band. David currently lived in Swannanoa and was employed by Emory Electric Co. He was preceded in death by his father, Gray; grandparents, Mary and Henry Sheek and Alma Shore. Survivors include his daughter, Jessica Sheek; his mother; three sisters, Mary Ellen Sheek, Christine (Jimmy) Barrow and children, Amy, Jennifer and Cindy, Betty (Gary) Lewis and children, Alison and Emily; and his grandfather, Ralph Shore. The Funeral service for Mr. Sheek will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002, at Center United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lisa Wishon (David's cousin), the Rev. Andy Lambert and the Rev. Oliver Helsabeck. Mr. Sheek will lie in state in the church sanctuary 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the Center United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. STYERS

Daphne Marie Styers, 74, passed away March 23, 2002, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was born March 1, 1928, in Winston-Salem to the late Carl and Marjorie Bowman. Daphne graduated from Gray High School and was an avid music and fine-art enthusiast. She served both her church and community and worked in an administrative support position with Bowman Gray School of Medicine prior to her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl Edgar Styers Jr., and her son, Ronald Steven Styers. Survivors include a son, Carl E. Styers and wife Patricia of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Styers of Welcome and her beloved grandchildren, Kurt, Brittney and Nicholas. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4680 Westchester Road. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 5980 Kinney Road.

WEISNER

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Helen Jeter Weisner, 95, of Lexington, Ky., a former resident of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002. She was the widow of A. Kenneth Weisner, who had worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 42 years. She was born in Chase City, Va., to James Gideon and Mary Moody Jeter. She was a member of Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, and the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, Ky. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 110 and a past matron. She was a former member of both the Good Samaritan Hospital and Forsyth Hospital Auxiliaries. She was a former president of the Residents Association of Mayfair Village. She is survived by a son, William H. Ray Jr., and his wife, Jeanne, of Lewisville; two daughters, Ann McPeek-Duncan and her husband, Jim, of Lexington, Ky., and Virginia W. Garlow of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, William H. Ray III of Lewisville, David Ray and his wife, Sheryl, of Greensboro, Lynn Stonewell and her husband, Mackinley, of Frankfort, Ky., Kenneth E. Ward of Ashland, Ore., Kenneth McPeek and his wife, Sue, of Louisville, Ky., and Leslie Dickinson and her husband, Robert, of Lexington, Ky. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Moravian Graveyard. Local arrangements are under the direction of Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel.

WILSON

Marian Bryan Wilson was born in Savannah, Ga., May 29, 1906, to Roselle H. Dunmore Bryan and Moses W. Bryan, both of whom were Savannah natives. As a young woman she was educated in the Savannah Public Schools until the eighth grade. She then attended Atlanta University High School/Spelman College. Her undergraduate college education was completed at Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., where she received her bachelor's of science in 1929. Upon completion, she began her teaching career in the Wilmington public schools. She married her lifelong childhood friend of Savannah, Ernest Frierson Wilson, after moving to Winston-Salem in 1931. During her years in Winston-Salem, Marian was known as a pioneer in her career as a social worker, educator, and community organizer. Her firsts included establishing an African-American day care center, a Winston-Salem adoption agency and a Winston-Salem employment agency. She was the city's first certified African-American social worker, and for a number of years was the only African-American social worker in the Forsyth County Welfare Department, as well as the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. Her master's degree in social work was awarded from North Carolina A&T State University in 1958. In 1929, she was initiated into the Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., at Fisk University. She was a charter member of both the Winston-Salem Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and the Winston-Salem Chapter of the Moles, Inc. As a community organizer, Marian was troop leader of the first and largest African-American senior Girl Scout troop in Winston-Salem, Troop 116, which still operates at Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ. She positively affected the lives of many young women involved with the troop. Along with Louise Wilson and Florence Creque, she established the community program known as The Experiment in Self-Reliance. Marian has been a loving daughter, a devoted wife, a protective and encouraging mother, grandmother and friend. She leaves to celebrate her life a loving daughter, Dr. Roselle L. Wilson, of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Ronald S. Davenport of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Charlene D. Davenport of Atlanta, Ga.; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ with the Rev. Henry S. Lewis Jr., pastor, officiating. The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday night at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery.
