Velma Walker
Died Oct. 11, 2006
BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Velma Greene Walker, 95, of College Avenue, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Plato Greene and Addie Mae Greene. She was a graduate of Boiling Springs Junior College and a retired dietician with Cleveland Memorial and Crawley Memorial hospitals. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and WMU Circle. She loved to play the piano and to cook.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carey L. Walker; sons, Billy Gene Walker and Jackie Moore Walker; brothers, Herbert W. Greene and Roy B. Greene; sisters, Cindy Greene Vassey and Virtie Greene Brooks; and a granddaughter, Wanda.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Walker of Kings Mountain; sister-in-law, Lorie Greene of Boiling Springs; daughter-in-law, Mary Cate Walker of Starkville, Miss.; and great-grandchildren, Chris Ramsey and wife, Trish, of Starkville, Carey Walker and wife, Crea, of Dublin, Ireland, and Michelle Gamarsh and husband, Scott, of Long Island, N.Y.; and many loving nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Boiling Springs Baptist Church.

Myra Anderson
Sept. 27, 1917 – Oct. 10, 2006
COLFAX — Mrs. Myra McAllister Anderson, 89, of Lakedale Road, formerly of McAllister Road, Mocksville, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at home.
She was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Smythe County, Va., to the late Charles A. and Roxanna Kessee McAllister. She was a 1934 graduate of Mocksville High School and a longtime member of Center United Methodist Church in Mocksville, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the American Chestnut Society and was a well-known benefactor to many charities. She enjoyed needlework and being a reading volunteer at William R. Davie Elementary and South Davie Middle schools. She had also been the den leader of Cub Scout Pack 575.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Charles “Bill” Anderson on Sept. 23, 2002; a sister, Margaret Dawson; and two brothers, Albert Garrett McAllister and Sanders Franklin McAllister.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anderson Hall and husband, Lane, of Colfax; three sons, Richard Charles Anderson and wife, Dorothy, of Casar, Thomas Stuart Anderson and wife, Linda, of Archdale and David Harold Anderson and wife, Gloria, of Mocksville; a sister, Dorothy M. Williams of Mocksville; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special caregiver, Ruthlyn Dunlap of Greensboro.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.
Funeral: Saturday at 4 p.m. at Center United Methodist Church; the body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service

Claire Leonhardt
Jan. 6, 1914 – Oct. 10, 2006
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Claire W. Leonhardt of Charlotte, formerly of Shelby, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Sunrise Assisted Living.
She was born Jan. 6, 1914, in Edenton, Ga., to the late Hattie Barnes Willis and Pate Eugene Willis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Hubert Knapp Leonhardt, and a brother, Farrell Willis.
She is survived by her son, Hubert Kay Leonhardt and his wife, Betty, of Weddington; three grandchildren, Hubert K. Leonhardt Jr. of Charlotte, Leland Neil Leonhardt and wife, Kim, and Anita Leonhardt Martin and her husband, Kirk, of Union County; three great-grandchildren, Katie and Lauren Martin and Paige Leonhardt. She is also survived by two sisters, Helen Willis Brymer and Jo Willis Goforth, both of Charlotte.
She moved to Flay as an infant and attended public schools in Lincoln County. She received her bachelor’s degree and later her master’s degree in education from Appalachian State Teachers College. She continued her studies and received her supervisor’s certificate from there. She taught school in Lincoln, Union, Catawba and Cleveland counties. She worked as general supervisor in the Cleveland County schools from 1956 until her retirement in 1976. In all, she spent more than 40 years in the public school system in North Carolina. She and others were responsible for starting the Head Start program in Cleveland County schools. She worked very hard and was instrumental in getting accreditation for the county schools.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, a former member of the Golden Links Sunday school class and the evening division of the United Methodist Women.
She was a member of the Shelby Chapter 110 Order of the Eastern Star. During her years of membership, she was Worthy Matron and served as grand officer with the Grand Chapter of North Carolina. She was a member of Alpha Delta International Sorority for women educators and a charter member of Sigma Chapter in Cleveland County. She belonged to other teaching organizations.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Lee Fitch Jr.
Died Oct. 10, 2006
SHELBY — Mr. Lee Fitch Jr., 79, of Elizabeth Avenue, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006.
Mr. Fitch was born in Cleveland County, a son of the late Robert Lee Fitch Sr. and Minnie Lola Warren Fitch. He retired from Dixon Tire Co. and had been a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church since the age of 9. He loved gardening and mechanizing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Butler Fitch and Bobby Gene Fitch, and a sister, Edna Fitch Wall.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy McNeely Fitch; a son, Eddie Fitch and wife, DeLynn, of Shelby; daughters, Kathy Fitch Ponder and husband, Joe, and Carolyn Fitch Passmore and husband, Roger, of Shelby; brothers, Jessie Fitch of Shelby, Harold Fitch and wife, Dot, of Cherryville, David Fitch and wife, Brenda, of LaGrange, Ga., and Eugene Fitch and wife, Mary, of Shelby; sisters, Shirley Fitch Green and husband, Bobby, of Lattimore and Dot Fitch Bradley and husband, Rob, of Lawndale; grandchildren, Brian Theis and Karen Fitch Theis, Eddie Todd Fitch, Shane Bryant, Jackie Bryant, Jamie Bryant, Chris Rathbone and Ashley McDaniel; and great-grandchildren, Andrew Yates Theis and T. J. Bryant.

SHELBY — Mr. Jimmy Douglas Thomas, 64, of 616 Hillcrest Drive, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Herman Lee and Willie Mae Irvin Thomas. He was employed in construction.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Thomas of the home; a son, Chris Thomas and wife, Jessica, of Shelby; two daughters, Carol Powell and husband, Billy, of Mooresboro and Joyce Robbins and husband, Ritchie, of Bostic; a sister, Cheryl Gallman and husband, Steven, of Patterson Springs; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
