GASTONIA — Mrs. Judith Israel Burgess, 56, or 1609 Belmar Drive, died Saturday Oct. 7, 2006, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Burgess was a daughter of the Marie Driver Israel of Bronwood, Ga., and the late Alva Israel. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Victory Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and WMU Director.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Burgess is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert “Bob” Burgess of the home; son, Joey Burgess; daughters Laura Ball and husband, Richard, all of Gastonia; Kristi Applegate and husband, Thomas, of Indian Trail, S.C.; brothers Danny Israel of Raleigh, Renza Israel of Colquitt, Ga., Richard Israel of Fort Collins, Colo.; special friend Melanie Gabriel; and six grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel and other times at the family’s residence.

Richard Smith

GASTONIA —Mr. Richard A. Smith, 59, of Gastonia died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was employed with Duke Power’s McGuire Nuclear Plant in Cornelius and was a member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church in Gastonia where he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. He retired from the Navy as a senior chief petty officer, machinist mate.
The Smith family would like to express its thanks to Gaston Hospice, nurses Pauline and Vickie and Dr. Steven Yates for their loving care.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David Valentine Smith and Laura Amanda Jane King Smith and a brother, Charles Edward Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Sanford Smith of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Vaughn Smith and Abbey King Smith of Dallas and Clayton Edward Smith of Boone; a daughter and son-in-law, Tanya Lea Smith Cummings and Jeremy Cummings of Mount Holly; two grandchildren, Parker Madeleine Smith and Laura Grace Cummings; sister-in-law and husband, Margaret and Vaughn Simon of Lake Worth, Fla.; brother-in-law and wife, J.C. and Patsy Sanford of Gastonia; special nieces, Beverly Sanford of Princeton, N.J., Karla Palovich of California, Sarah Smith-Wilson of Kannapolis; and a special nephew, Matthew Smith of Durham.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. before the service.

BOSTIC — Mr. James Robert “Bob” Haynes, 75, of 240 Bostic Yard Road, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at the Banner Elk Life Center in Banner Elk.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a retired textile worker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Bostic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Haynes and Zulia Carter Haynes and a son, Marcus Haynes who died in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Helen McGinnis Haynes of the home; sons, Larry Haynes of Ellenboro, Jimmy Haynes of Boiling Springs; a daughter, Nickie Grant of Bostic; three brothers, John Haynes of Forest City, J.C. Haynes of Morganton, and Hal Haynes of Clairmont, Calif.; one sister, Beatrice Bell of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

SHELBY — Mr. C. Thomas Jolley, 61, of Gaffney Road, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Rutherford County, a son of the late J.T. Jolley and E.Z. Lorine Bailey Jolley. He was a graduate of Crest High School and Cleveland Community College. He served in the Army and retired from Duke Energy after 40 years as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 388. He was an Oasis Shriner and member of the Piedmont Shrine Club. He loved fishing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, May Ruth Scruggs Jolley.
He is survived by sons, Mark Jolley and wife, Tonia, of Mooresboro and Greg Jolley of Shelby; brothers, Joe Jolley of Columbia, S.C., and Steve Jolley of Cliffside; sisters, Linda Jolley Willis and husband, Bud, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; grandchildren, Kelsey Jolley, Kassidy Jolley and Kyle Jolley, all of Mooresboro; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Boiling Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Lawrence Edward Anthony, 85, of 921 Oak Grove Road, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at VA Medical Center in Asheville.
He was born in Tryonville, Pa., a son of the late Elmer and Grace Lowers Anthony. He was the husband of the late Mildred Saxton Anthony. He was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Aylissa Galford; three brothers and one sister. He retired after 30 years with Cyclops Machine Shop in Titusville, Pa. He served in the Army in World War II in the African Campaign 185th Combat Eng. He was active with the veterans at the Kings Mountain Senior Center.
He is survived by a son, Ronald E. Anthony and wife, Mary, of Centerville, Pa.; daughters, Kathleen A. Mott and husband, Butch, of Kings Mountain, Dianne A. Kent and husband, Donald, of Corry, Pa., and Cindy M. Davis and husband, Dave, of Kings Mountain; brothers, Harold Anthony of Pleasantville, Pa., George Anthony of Pennsylvania and Larry Anthony of Titusville, Pa.; sisters, Edna Cobell, Grace Corey and Elma Zaremba, all of Titusville, and Jane Mitchell of Erie, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was born in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of the late William Turner and Annie Fowler Turner. She was a homemaker. She was a very kind person and loved animals.
She is survived by her husband, Vincent A. Cannova of Kings Mountain; a son, Jeffrey Cannova of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Susan C. Byars and husband, Eddie, of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren, Michael Cannova, Marie Bowen, Vinny Bowen and Christopher Cannova.
