Nov. 28, 1935 – Oct. 12, 2006

MORGANTON – Dickie Roger Brackett, 70, of Charlotte, died Thursday at Grace Hospital in Morganton. Born in Shelby to the late Alston and Louella Morrison Brackett, he was an Air Force veteran. Mr. Brackett was a steam control valve repairman for Control Southeast for about 15 years and then owned his own company, Steam Control Specialty, until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Lee Brackett; a son, Jeffrey A. Brackett of Harrisburg; daughter and son-in-law Sandra Lee and Joe Foster of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Connie Lee Brackett Burney, Cody Lee Brackett and Dillon and Alaina Foster; a great-grandson, Weston Burney; and brothers and sisters and their spouses, Bill and Vernie Brackett, Mary and Herman Turner, Gene and Betty Brackett, Jim and Janice Brackett and Norma White, widow of Leroy White.

The family would like to thank the staff of Broughton Hospital for all of their compassionate care.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and for one hour before the service.

Funeral: Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, located at 5301 Albemarle Road in Charlotte

Elnora Shields

March 14, 1923 – Oct. 13, 2006

SHELBY — Mrs. Elnora Adeline Reinhardt Shields, 83, of 416 S. Washington St., died Friday, October 13, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Shields was a native of Cleveland County and a daughter to the late Charles Henry and Orrie Smith Reinhardt. She worked as an office manager and secretary for Electric Motor Service and was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was a founding member of the American Business Womens Association, City of Springs Chapter and a member of the Red Hat Society.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James “T.J.” Shields.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Wade Vaughn of the home; a grandson, Thomas Allen Vaughn of Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Luke Vaughn of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Karen Philbeck Vaughn of Shelby; four sisters, Jenny Shull and Carolyn Lowery, both of Shelby, Irene D’Amico of Hampton, Va., and Charlene Curtis of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Funeral: Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

Burial: Sunset cemetery

Died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006

MOORESBORO — Mary Willie Beason Bridges, 87, of 3361 Bridges Lake Road, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Myrtle McSwain Beason, a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Seth Bridges.

She is survived by four sons, Gene and Lunette Bridges, Glenn Bridges, Larry Wayne and Bobbie Bridges and Bruce Bridges, all of Mooresboro; one sister, Jeanette Fox of Mooresboro; four grandchildren, Bobby Bridges, Lou Ann Ward, Jennifer and Steve Bowen, Carla Bridges; seven great-grandchildren, Clint Bridges, Brandy and Travis Truelove, Zack Bridges, Alyssa Impeduglia, Andrew Impeduglia, Adam Bowen, MacKenzie Tallent, Kendall Talent; four great-great-grandchildren, Melaina Truelove, Lane Truelove, Chase Bridges, Kayleigh Bridges; and a special friend, Wanda Ward.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home today from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

waterbury, conn. — Joseph Jamar Person, 6 months old, died Oct. 5, 2006, at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut. Born in Lincoln County, his parents are Michael Person and De’erica Bristol Person.

Funeral: Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Manie Wilkie

SHELBY — Manie Wilkie, 90, of Kings Road, Shelby, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006 at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Cleveland County to the late John and Lustie Oakes Wilkie, Mr. Wilkie was retired from Mastercraft Mill in Spindale, N. C. and self-employed later as a lawnmower repairman. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Shelby and a former member of Lost Cords Club, Shelby.
Mr. Wilkie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Darvin and J. I Wilkie of Shelby, and half-sister Etta Lail, Aurie Padgett, Hattie Horner and Vertie Gilreath.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Margaret Ruth Hamrick Wilkie of the home; a son, Ludy Wilkie of the home; two sisters, Velvie and Mescal Wilkie Davis of Southport; a niece, Doris Hamrick of Shelby; special neighbors Willie and Brenda Goforth; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends immediately following graveside services.
Funeral: A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2006 at 4 p.m.

Mozell Toney

July 16, 1908 – Oct. 2, 2006

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Jenny Mozell Hoyle Toney, 98, of Harris Creek Road, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Cleveland County to the late John S. and Nancy Ann Ledford Hoyle. She retired from the spinning room at Cleveland Mills and Power Co. She was a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Earl Toney, two brothers and seven sisters.

She is survived by daughters, Wilma Toney Ray and Patsy T. Gaskey and husband, Jack, all of Lawndale, and Julia T. Baxter and husband, Tommy, of Shelby; nine grandchildren, Toni Wyncoop, Alexander Ray, Donald Ray, Douglas Ray, Patricia Hawkins, Jack Gaskey Jr., Jennifer Boling, Tommy Baxter Jr. and Vincent Baxter; 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Norma Jane Dedmon Porter, 52, of 1339 Lithia Springs Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Cleveland County, a daughter of the late James Everette and Minnie Mildred Harris Dedmon. She was the assistant manager of Shelby Cleaners and a member of Ross Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Eston Monroe Porter; a son, John Porter of Shelby; two sisters, Karen Nalley and husband, Timmy Lee, and Theda Parker, all of Shelby; two nieces, Michelle Black and husband, Kevin Burkhart, and Virginia Navy and husband, Ricky; three nephews, Sammy Black, Darrell Vess and wife, Amanda, and Clint Parker; four great-nieces, Chelsie Hunt, Elaine Hall, Miranda Black and Lisa Burkhart; and three great-nephews, Dustin Black, Wesley Black and Dameon Navy.

Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Funeral: Friday at 2 p.m. at Ross Grove Baptist Church; the body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service for viewing

SHELBY — Mr. Manie Marvin Wilkie, 90, of Kings Road, Shelby, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Hospice at Wendover.

Willie Phelps

Jan. 26, 1933 – Oct. 2, 2006

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Willie Beatrice Pounds Phelps, 73, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 2, 2006.

A native of Putnam County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Plaster and Lulabell Clemons Pounds. She was a cook for Lenoir-Rhyne College and retired from Burns High School as a custodian. Mrs. Phelps opened her home to more than 100 foster children and was a mother and grandmother to many children in her community. She was a member of the Eastern Star Love Chapter No. 9 and First Baptist Church of Lawndale, where she was a deaconess, senior choir member, usher and kitchen committee member.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Earnest Pounds; a sister, Doris Pounds Middlebrooks; and a nephew, Dwayne Brennan Pounds.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charlie Phelps; two sons, Larry Phelps of Shelby and Devonta Phelps of the home; eight daughters, Debra Phelps Ramseur and husband, Larry, Brenda Phelps and husband, Ronald Goode and Vanessa Phelps, all of Lawndale, Tamara Phelps, Sherry Middlebrooks Allen and husband, Danny and Robin Middlebrooks Huskey and husband, Vincent, all of Shelby, Melisa Phelps Phillips and husband, Rick, of Duluth, Ga., and Sheriah Phelps of the home; one sister, Johnnie Mae Stubbs of Gray, Ga.; one aunt, Annie Mae Griggs of Gray; an adopted mother, Louise Howell of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren, Antwan Phelps, Rekisha Phelps, William Phelps, Destiny Phelps, Keron Phelps, Breyon Middlebrooks, Jatannia Middlebrooks, Derrall Middlebrooks, Brandon Spikes and Travond Ross; two great-grandchildren, Emoniya Baker and Ja’Quavion Linder; a very special niece, Diane Pounds of Hickory; special children, Belon Huskey, Pam Huskey, Brandy Huskey, April Robinson, David Robinson and Kimberly Parker; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lawndale.
