Clifford Grimes Jr.

SHELBY — Mr. Clifford Grimes Jr., 62, of 1221 Webb Drive, Shelby, departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Clifford Sr. and Mozell Clements Grimes and was born Oct. 23, 1943. He was a faithful member of Hopper’s Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Layman’s League. He retired from Alexdale Furniture in Hickory. He was a 1963 graduate of Douglas High School and an Army Veteran serving in the Vietname War. Mr. Grimes was a very humble man and a man of few words. He enjoyed good food, sports and loved to play cards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Bobby Lewis Grimes, John Thomas “J.T.” Vinson Sr. and Samuel David “Lee” Vinson; and two sisters, Lela Mae Vinson Whiteside and Roberta Vinson Gay.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeanette Byrd Grimes of Shelby; one son, Donovan Lamar Grimes and his wife, Cynthia, of Shelby; one daughter, Katrina Howell of Shelby and her husband, SMsgt. Joseph Howell, of Oklahoma; two brothers, Robert Vinson and his wife, Lucy, of Lawndale and Willie James Grimes of Shelby; one sister, Gladys Perkins of Shelby; nine grandchildren; special niece, Shirley Howard of Shelby; special friend, Ronnie Tyndle of Lawndale; two brothers-in-law, Pete Byrd of Lawndale and Frank Byrd of Hickory; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Petty of Kings Mountain and Annie Goforth and Martha Shade, both of Kingstown;

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Elijah Gordon Ross Jr., 63, of 400 E. Ridge, St., Kings Mountain, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at White Oak Manor of Kings Mountain.

Ellen “Tan” Mitcham
Died Oct. 5, 2006
SHELBY — Mrs. Ellen “Tan” Morris Mitcham, 88, of 401 N. Morgan St., Shelby, formerly of Ellenboro, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William Canady and Susan Ellen Ruppe Morris. She retired from Tanner Corporation and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Anthony Mitcham.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Mitcham of Mooresville; a daughter, Rita Everhart of Ellenboro; three brothers, John Morris of Greenwood, S.C., Joe Morris of Greenville, S.C. and Jimmy Morris of Greenwood; a sister, Alma Carswell of Morganton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

SHELBY — Mr. Harry Gene Elliott, 81, of Shelby, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Elliott was born in Cleveland County, a son of the late Bonnie Harrison Elliott and Eugenia “Vista” Green Elliott. He was a Navy veteran having served during World War II. He was a retired machine operator with Fiber Industries. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and loved woodworking and the outdoors.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Eskridge Elliott; a son, David Elliott and wife, Karen, of Greenwood, S.C.; a sister, Betty Elliott Neill and husband, Robert, of Charlotte; and a grandson, Paul Harrison Elliott of Greenwood.

Alice Williams

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Lilly Alice Buff Williams, 90, of 127 Gable Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at White Oak Manor of Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Buff and mother, Lou Buff; first husband, Cullen Bradshaw; second husband, Herman Lee Williams; and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by sons, Vernon Bradshaw and Tommy Bradshaw, both of Lawndale, Herman L. Williams Jr. of Casar and Kenneth Williams of Lawndale; daughters, Mae Huffman and Mary Elmore of Claremont, Carolyn Hudson of Casar and Vernie Poole of Lawndale; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

James L. Wood

HARRIS — Mr. James Lee Wood, 70, of Harris, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006 at Hospice House.
He was born Jan. 13, 1936, in Gaffney, S.C., to the late Alfred Wood and Polly Cooper Wood. He was a lifelong resident of Rutherford County, having retired as a loom fixer in the mills.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Lee Wood Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa Dawn Wood; a son, Ronnie Lee Wood of Cliffside; six daughters, Mary Harris of Golden Valley, Sarah Powers of Chesnee, S.C., Debbie Melton of Henrietta, Rhonda Lee of Rutherfordton, Tera Wease of Cliffside and Carla Bridges of Harris; a sister, Mary Helen Webb of Henrietta; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved him dearly.
