SHELBY — Mrs. Marie Howell Wortman, 90, of 1176 Wyke Road, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grover Howell Sr. and retired from Morgan Boggs. She was a faithful member of the Adult Women No. 3 Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church. She had resided at Shelby Manor on Wyke Road for the last three years and was voted Valentine Queen for 2006.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Hubert Wortman; her brothers, Marion Howell, Dewey Howell, T.G. Howell Jr. and Winfred Howell; and sisters, Louise Shull and Esther Hester McMurray.
She is survived by a son, Richard Wortman and wife, Oaka, of Burlington; a daughter, Jane Smith Hill and husband, Jackie, of Wedowee, Ala.; two sisters, Ellen Giuseppone and husband, Toney, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Betty Jean Brackett of Cherryville; a brother, Robert Howell of Shelby; three grandchildren, Pam Smith Murphree of Polkville, Jeff Smith of Wedowee and Angela Wortman Berrier of High Point; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Clyde McClain Bridges, 89, of 1107 W. Gold St., died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
He was a native of Cleveland County, the son of the late Luther and Minnie Huffstickler Bridges. He retired from Bennett Brick and Tile in Kings Mountain and was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. He loved beekeeping, gardening and fishing and was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and two sons-in-law, Edgar Charles Wiggins and Dennis Gold Beatty.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Averice Eaker Bridges of Kings Mountain; a son, Ned Bridges and wife, Judy, of Gastonia; daughters, Carolyn B. Ross and husband, Manuel, of Kings Mountain and Janice B. Raines and husband, Bobby, of Fallston; a brother, Bill Bridges of Kings Mountain; a sister, Edith Carpenter of Kings Mountain; grandchildren, Sherri Weeks and husband, Paul, of Shelby, Christy Bridges of Concord and Brian Beatty and wife, Jennifer Lee Beatty, of Fallston; and great-grandchildren, Morgan Weeks and Madison Weeks.

SHELBY — Mr. Charles James Holtzinger, 88, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at Summit Place.
Mr. Holtzinger was born in Wrightsville, Pa., a son of the late George Albert Holtzinger and Mary Elizabeth Diffenderfer Holtzinger. He was a graduate of Jones College in Orlando, Fla. He was a retired master sergeant and served in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He also retired as administrative assistant from the Federal Aviation Administration. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award and the Purple Heart while in the Air Force.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 0791, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7045 and Moose Lodge No. 148.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Lucille Miller Holtzinger, and seven brothers.
He is survived by a son, Donald Charles Holtzinger and wife, Kathleen, of Shelby; sisters, Ora Patterson of California, Carrie Leiphart of Wrightsville; grandchildren, Donald R. Horne and wife, Donna, of Statesville, Angela Dover of Grover, Thomas L. Barnett and wife, Stephanie, of Belmont and David A. Barnett and wife, Charlene, of Grover; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation: The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Etzweiler Funeral Home, 700 Hellman St., Wrightsville.
