Betty Jean Smith

SHELBY — Mrs. Betty Jean Cope Smith, 57, of 122 W. Double Shoals Road, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at home.
She was a native of Gaston County and was a daughter of the late William Edgar and Ollie Mae Bumgardner Cope.
Mrs. Smith was a truck driver and retired from Old Dominion Freight Lines. She was a member of Ledford Grove Baptist Church and loved singing gospel music.
Her husband and her family were the inspiration and loves of her life. In addition to her parents, two brothers, Jack Bumgardner and Ernest Cope, and a sister, Maggie Rhyne, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Floyd Dean Smith; two sons, Ricky Dean Smith, and wife, Tammy, of Shelby and Michael Ross Smith and wife, Renee, of Fallston; daughters, Kathy Smith, and husband, Marvin, of Coldwater, Mo., and Maggie Dawn Smith, Cheri Denise Smith and Riki Leigh Smith, all of the home, and Pamela Smith of Dallas, N.C.; a brother, Willis Cope of Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Died Oct. 1, 2006
SHELBY — Mrs. Doyle Webb Cabiness, 91, of Grover St., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. Cabiness graduated from the Women’s College of Greensboro and retired from Cleveland County Schools after 40 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Adult 6 Sunday School Class Education Sorority, Omicron Conclave of Kappa Kappa Iota, and Burns Out (Fellow Teachers).
Her husband, Dewey Winford Cabiness, her parents, Thomas and Mary Lou Stamey Webb, and a brother, Cecil Thomas Webb, precede her in death.
Mrs. Cabiness is survived by her son, Winford Webb Cabiness and wife, Anita Sims Cabiness, of Shelby; grandchildren, Robert Flay Cabiness III and wife, Melanie, of Brunswick, Ga., and Ashley Cabiness Mallik and husband, Toby, of Cary; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frances T. Webb of Shelby; nephew, Harvey Cecil Webb and wife, Jean, of Shelby; great-niece, Amanda Webb; and special caregivers, Rosa Padgett and Jeraldine Watson.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the ladies’ parlor of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral: Tuesday, 11 a.m. in Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church; the body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes before the service

Ellen Sparks Carrouth, age 88, of Taylorsville, NC, formerly of Ellenboro passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at a Taylorsville nursing home. Ellen was born
July 1, 1918 in Caroleen, NC to the late Caleb Sparks and Beulah Wall Sparks. She was a lifelong resident of Rutherford County, a member of the Caroleen United Methodist Church and the XYZ Club. She had worked at a sales clerk with Dalton Ward Department Store. She was preceded in death by her husband Quinten Roosevelt Carrouth.
Jarrett Foster
March 15, 1973 - July 8, 2006
Jarrett Ryan Foster, age 33, of Pendleton, S.C. died Saturday, July 8, 2006 in a jet ski accident in South Carolina. Jarrett was a native of Rutherford County and the son of Jimmy and Linda Foster of Forest City, N.C. He was a member of Floyd's Creek Baptist Church.
A 1991 graduate of Chase High School, Jarrett continued his education at Western Carolina University. A three year letterman on Western's track team, Jarrett was captain and MVP his senior year. Jarrett earned his bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management in 1995 and completed his Master's Degree in education in 1997. Jarrett also spent three years as an assistant track coach at Western before moving on to Clemson.
Jarrett had a great impact on the Clemson program over his career, coaching 12 All-Americans, 40 NCAA qualifiers, 23 ACC Champions and 55 All-ACC selections. During his time as an assistant coach Clemson had five top 20 team finishes and won six team ACC Championships.
Clemson's field event athletes had just completed their most successful season in history in many areas under Foster. In 2006, he coached four All-Americans, five ACC Champions and nine All-ACC athletes. Clemson had an All-American in the pole vault (indoors), the heptathlon (indoors) and the triple jump (outdoors) for the first time in school history, and had an outdoor decathlon All-American for just the second time.
Jarrett was a big reason Clemson finished second at the ACC Outdoor championships, fourth at the NCAA East Region and 26th at the NCAA national meet in 2006.
Jarrett was named the East Region Assistant Coach of the Year for Jumps/Combined Events in 2005, by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCA). He earned the inaugural award after coaching a long jumper and triple jumper to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as well as a high jumper, pole vaulter, and two throwers to competition at the East Region Championships.
Jarrett loved God, his family, and life. He lived each day to its fullest.
Marion Leonard Lowe
February 12, 1919 - June 21, 2009
Marion “Leonard” Lowe, age 90, of Caroleen, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Hospice House.
He was born February 12, 1919 in Great Falls, SC to the late Bryon Henry Lowe and Othello Ruff Lowe. He was a man who had many accomplishments during his long and productive life. He taught his children by example while living out his Christian faith and serving his country and community. Among those accomplishments, was graduating from Wake Forest University Law School and serving his country in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant during World War II. He faithfully served as District Attorney for the 29th Judicial District for 24 years. He played a vital role at Caroleen Baptist Church while holding the office of deacon and Sunday School teacher. He led in many community activities as a member of the Lions Club, the Farm Bureau, the North Carolina Cattleman’s Association, and the Board of Trustees at Gardner-Webb University and as an active part of the Democratic Party. His most enjoyable personal time was farming and tending to his Black Angus Cows. Leonard leaves a legacy behind that will live on in the minds and hearts of his friends and loved ones.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 66 years, Reba Robbins Lowe and by his children DiAnne, Steve and Karen. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Meldora Thomas
January 4, 1916 - September 20, 2006
Meldora Mills Thomas, age 90, of 2555 Camp Creek Road, Union Mills, NC formerly of Caroleen passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby, NC.
She was a born in Cherokee County, SC on January 4, 1916 to the late Tom and Lula Massey Mills. Meldora was the widow of Lewis Thomas who died June 17, 2002 and was also preceded in death by three sons, George Thomas, Kenneth Thomas, and William Thomas and two grandchildren, Lisa Jo Thomas and David Michael Philbeck, Jr.
She was a retired employee of Cone Mills in Avondale and a member of the Fork Creek Baptist Church.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by two sons, Clayton Thomas and his wife Irene of Gilkey, NC and Charles Thomas of Caroleen, NC; four daughters, Louene Lane and husband Junior of Union Mills, and Mildred Campbell and husband Thomas, Martha Wadsworth, and Linda Bailey and husband Bobby, all of Forest City. Also surviving are 24 Grandchildren, 35 Great Grandchildren, and 18 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Pauline Pannell
March 24, 1918 - September 16, 2006
Miss Pauline Pannell, age 88, of 209 Radford Road, Ellenboro, NC passed
away Saturday, September 16, 2006 at the Hospice House of Forest City.
Miss Pannell was born March 24, 1918 in Rutherford County. She was the
daughter of the late Avery and Jessie Moore Pannell. In addition to her
parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Pannell,
Dewey Pannell, and Herbert Pannell. She was a graduate of Tri-High School
and class valedictorian. She received her teaching certificate from
Asheville Teacher's College and her masters degree from Appalachian
State University. She was a retired elementary school teacher having
taught for 45 years. She was a lifetime member of Race Path Baptist Church
where she was very active. She was also very active in the community
and in the Tri City Women's Club and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma.
Pauline is survived by nephews and their wives, Gene & Judy Pannell of
Spartanburg, SC, Kenneth & Carol Pannell of Ellenboro, Ronnie & Margie
Pannell of Cherryville, and Jerry "Cos" & Joni Pannell of Dobbinsville
and a niece Diane Dedmond and her husband Marc of Dobbinsville. She is
also survived by great nieces & nephews, John, Michelle, Jason, Daniel,
Matthew, Tammy, Barnaby and Heath and great- great nieces & nephews,
McKinsey, Raven, Courtney, Dustin, Darby, Cody, and Damien.
Roy Jones
Graveside services for Roy Raford Jones, age 85, of rural Jewett will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday at Concord cemetery in Leon County. Rev. Carl Clark will officiate at the services.
Visitation will be held Friday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present 6:00 P.M.—8:00 P.M.
Mr. Jones was born in Donie, Texas to Robert Lee and Addie Mae Lummus Jones. He and his late wife lived most of there life in South Houston where he was a general contractor in the building of new homes and remodeling business. Mr. Jones loved the outdoors. He especially loved gardening, fishing, flowers and birds. Mr. Jones and his wife moved to Leon County twenty three years ago from South Houston. Mr. Jones died at his residence Wednesday night May 9, 2007.
