Cherryville — Mrs. Elva Smith McGinnis, 93, formerly of W. Church St. and Somerset Court, went to heaven on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Carolina Care Center.
FUNERAL: Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church; the body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Burial: City Memorial cemetery
VISITATION: The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home, and one hour before the service on Friday at First Baptist Church.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Born in Cleveland County to the late Lemuel “L.G.” Smith and Clara Costner Smith, Mrs. McGinnis was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church for 76 years. During those years she served as choir director and sang with the choir for many years. She served as her late husband, Pete’s secretary for his produce business. She enjoyed sewing, playing her organ and crocheting afghans for charity. She also volunteered her time and talents to the Cherryville schools. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Gail Crocker Canipe.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: Her parents; her husband, Russell Thompson “Pete” McGinnis; a son-in-law, J. Ralph Beam Jr.; four brothers, Thurman, Warren, D.L. and Taft Smith; and three sisters, Lottie Mae Williams, Thelma Smith and Ruth Crocker
SURVIVORS: A daughter, Rita M. Beam of Cherryville; a brother, Hal Smith of Apopka, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Kate Smith; grandson, James Russell Beam and his wife, Wendy; a granddaughter, Lucinda Davis and her husband, Jeff; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Marah Davis and Allie and Addison Beam; all of Shelby; and loving nieces and nephews and friends at Somerset Court.

PERSONAL HISTORY: Mrs. Wesson was a native of Cleveland County and daughter of the late Major and Margie Philbeck and a graduate of Boiling Springs High School, class of 1951. She was a very loving wife and mother. She has gone to heaven to be with the love of her life, Don Wesson. She was a life long member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, former church secretary, pianist, organist and member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Triple L Club. She was co-founder of Wesson Septic Tank Service, Inc. She was the co-owner and operator of Wesson Septic Tank Service for more than 40 years.
