A Shriner and Mason, he was a member of the Oasis Shriners of Charlotte and Masonic Cleveland Lodge 202 of Shelby and North Carolina National Guard. He also enjoyed helping his wife with various community projects, including building sets for Greater Shelby Community Theatre and Cleveland Community College.
An avid sportsman, he liked to play golf and watch football games, but his real love was skeet shooting and trap shooting. A competitive shooter, he won numerous awards over the years.
