David Harry
Sept. 2, 1914 — Jan. 14, 2007
GROVER — Mr. David Lowrance Harry Sr., 92, formerly of Grover, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at The Pines in Davidson.
Born September 2, 1914, in Grover, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin Harry Sr. and Effie Holmes Harry. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. and Rider College of Trenton, N.J., before returning to North Carolina, where he served as treasurer of Minette Mills in Grover for more than 30 years.
An accomplished businessman, he also served as chairman of AEA, Inc. and honorary chairman of Preferred Power, Inc., both of Charlotte. He was a devoted husband of 60 years to the late Gladys Westbrook Harry.
A caring and generous father, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret Harry Hidell; brothers, Charles Franklin Harry Sr., William B. Harry, Brice Holmes Harry; and sisters Sydell H. Uzzell, Frances H. Barrier, and Jeanette “Jackie” H. Roundtree.
He is survived by his son, David Lowrance Harry Jr. and his wife, Mary Bruce Harry, of Charlotte; grandsons, Willis J. Hidell Jr. and wife Kristin, David Holmes Hidell and wife Laurie, and David Lowrance Harry III and wife Emily; granddaughters, Katharine Hidell Thomas and husband Billy, and Amanda Keels Harry; and great-grandchildren Will, Charles, Rebecca, Margaret Ann, Emily, and Peggy.
Visitation: The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorial Service: Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Grover, where Mr. Harry was a lifelong member

Johnnie Sue Chambers
May 7, 1934 — Jan. 11, 2007
GASTONIA — Ms. Johnnie Sue Chambers, 72, of 2421 Sunset Ave., Apt. B, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007.
Born May 7, 1934, to the late J.B. and Elizabeth Chambers, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Chambers, J.B. Chambers Jr. and Thomas Chambers; and a great-grandchild, Kamahee Chambers.
She is survived by three sons, Terry Chambers, Larry Goode and Gary Chambers and his wife Sarah, all of Gastonia; one brother, William Chambers and his wife Virginia of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Reola Chambers Jamerson of Shelby; two grandchildren, Melissa Chambers and Terrence Duncan, both of Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Daviion Hillman of Shelby and Akira Duncan of Kings Mountain; and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.
Funeral: Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Withrow’s Funeral Home, Inc.

Willie Terrill Jr.
Died Jan. 12, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Willie James Terrill Jr., 60, of 842 South 41 St., Philadelphia died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home of Modestinia Bush, 1338 N. Lafayette St., Shelby.

Mary Jane Patterson Pruitt
Sept. 30, 1953 – Jan. 14, 2007
GASTONIA — Mrs. Mary Jane Patterson Pruitt, 53, of Swan Run Court, Gastonia, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at home.
Mrs. Pruitt was born Sept. 30, 1953, in McCaysville, Ga., a daughter of Clarence A. and Grace M. Patterson of Shelby. She was an expeditor with JAS Forwarding of Charlotte. She was a member of Living Light Baptist Church, Shelby, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Westgate Chapter No. 343 and Daughters of the Nile, Latona Temple No. 154. She served as Queen in 2005.
Survivors, including her parents, are her husband, Bryon C. Pruitt; children, John Ashby Ware and wife, Kristi of Fuquay Varina and Ariel W. Lesmerises and husband, Brent, of Lowell; sister, Helen Patterson and special friend, Ken Whisenant; and four grandchildren, Lindsey, Jake and Megan Ware and Mackenzie Lesmerises.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of The Blumenthal Cancer Center, Charlotte and the nurses and staff of Hospice of Gaston County.
Visitation: The family will receive friends today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

James E. Smith
Died Jan. 16, 2007
FOREST CITY — Mr. James Earl Smith, 83, of 1147 Bethany Church Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Oakland Living Center, where he was a resident.
A native of Rutherford County, he retired as the owner-operator of a chain of drug stores called Best Discount Drugs. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for about 35 years. He also taught Sunday school at Oakley Baptist Church in Asheville during the 1950s and 1960s and served as a deacon there before returning to his native Rutherford County in 1965. He served in the Army under General Patton in World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was preceded in death by his father, Major Smith of Bostic, and mother, Bertha Smith of Spindale. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Eldon Smith of Spindale, Mack Smith of Bostic and Oliver Smith of Forest City.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Ruff Smith of Forest City; two sons and their wives, David J. Smith and Rosemary H. Smith of Forest City and Robert “Bobby” Morgan Smith and Mailee Smith of Forest City; one daughter and her husband, Karen Smith Glover and Chris Glover of Forest City; four grandchildren; sisters, Corene McDaniel, Blanche Brock and Ruth Roper, all of Forest City, and Doris Smith Elliott of Columbus; brothers, Clyde Smith of Forest City, J.B. Smith of Shelby and Harold Smith, Morris Smith, Dewey Smith and Clay Smith, all of Bostic; stepmother, Geneva Smith of Bostic; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at The Padgett and King Funeral Home, Forest City.

Lee ‘Boot’ Johnson
Jan. 27, 1935 – Jan. 14, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Lee Arthur “Boot” Johnson, 71, of 129 Nolan Road, Lawndale, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born Jan. 27, 1935, to the late John Henry and Sue Belle Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a former truck driver and business owner of Lee Johnson’s Service Station and Johnson’s Septic and Grading Services. He was a member of Clover Hill Lodge No. 10. “Boot,” as he was known by many, had an outgoing personality, loved to joke, speak his mind and never met a stranger. In his spare time, he enjoyed computers, driving and mowing the lawn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Horace Johnson and Fred Johnson.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his devoted wife of 29 years, Willie Mae Johnson; two “special” nieces, whom he and his wife helped rear, Nicole Johnson Mitchell of Pensacola, Fla., and Kimberly Johnson of Shelby; a godson, Michael Wray Sr. of Lawndale; one brother, James Henry Johnson of Lawndale; three sisters, Mattie Bell Vinson, Lucy Ellen Vinson (Robert) and Betty Ann Clark (John), all of Lawndale; a special nephew, Harold Johnson of Hickory; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.
Funeral: Thursday at 1 p.m. at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Boiling Street; a daughter, Rikki Street Silvers of Cliffside; three brothers, Foy Barkley of Maiden, John Barkley of Nebo and Jack Barkley of Harmony; two sisters, Rhonda Blanton of Cliffside and Gwandolyn McKee of Mooresboro; and a granddaughter, Randi Renee Silvers.

SHELBY — Ms. Carolyn Patrick Watts, 62, of Oakhurst Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born in Cleveland County, Ms. Watts was a daughter of the late Charles Edward Patrick and Frankie Ashley Patrick. She was a homemaker who loved her family very much and a member of Christ Covenant Church. She loved to shop, cook and travel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Paul W. Atkins and Jimmy L. Watts.
She is survived by a son, Scott Beam and wife, Janice, of Shelby; daughters, Paula Beam Adams of Rock Hill, S.C., Tracy Beam Goins and husband, Rodney, of Shelby, Betty Ann Beam Robertson of Shelby and Haley Beam Stutzman and husband, Dan, of Mount Holly; brothers, Eddie Patrick and wife, Cathy, of Randleman and Michael Patrick and wife, Robin, of Shelby; sisters, Patricia Lovelace and husband, James, of Grover and Freida Bivins and husband, Kenneth, of Lawndale; grandchildren, Shanna and David Beam, Kesha and Christopher Goins and Tyler, Thomas and Ashley Robertson; and very special aunt Donnis Ware and many other loving extended family members.
