A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Julius Toney and Marilla Toney. After working on his father’s farm during the era of horse-drawn equipment for several years, he enlisted in the Army at the onset of World War II, serving as a 102 Technical Sergeant in Company F, 315th Infantry.
