Giles Webb Jr.
Died Feb. 10, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Giles E. “Ed” Webb, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Giles E. Webb and Lacy Littleton Webb.
He was a graduate of Catawba College with a degree in business. He was a member of the golf and tennis teams while in college.
He was a veteran of World War II, where he served four years in the Air Force. After his military service, he went to work for his father in the wholesale grocery business. He was the co-owner of the Cleveland Insurance Agency with Richard Ferchaud until his retirement in 1990.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Larry Hershenson Sunday school class. He was lifetime member of the Cleveland Country Club and an avid golfer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Webb Rucker.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Gates Webb; a daughter, Jann Webb Pittman and husband, Don; a son, Ed Webb and wife, Jean, all of Shelby; two grandsons, Michael Pittman and David Webb; three brothers-in-law, Phil Rucker, Jerry Gates and Terry Gates.
Visitation: The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home, 400 Country Club Circle, Shelby.
Funeral: Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Shelby
Burial: Sunset cemetery

John Plank Jr.
Died Feb. 10, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. John Edward Plank Jr., 66, of First Broad Road, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral: Arrangements will be announced by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Ruth Palmer
Died Feb. 10, 2007
SHELBY — Mrs. Ruth Price Blanton Palmer, 91, of 118 Lattimore St., Apt. 1, passed away peacefully at home with family on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Cleo Geer Price. She was a retired department manager for Kings Department Store. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and former member of the Golden Links Sunday school class and the altar guild.
She was a loving, caring and generous person who enjoyed being with her family and friends. She will also be remembered for her politeness, friendliness and putting others first.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ithiel Blanton; second husband, Ben C. Palmer; sister, Irene Whitworth; and sister-in-law, Inez McIntyre.
She is survived by her daughters, Glenda and Donald McGinnis of Lincolnton and Sarah and Randy McSwain of Mount Gilead; stepson, Tom Palmer; grandchildren, Mark McGinnis and wife, Jennifer, of Denver, N.C., Ellen McGinnis Fenters and husband, Bruce, of Iron Station, Amy McSwain of Charlotte and Joel McSwain of Asheville; great-grandchildren, Zachary McGinnis and Daniel Fenters.
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour before the service and other times at the home.
Funeral: Today at 11 a.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel

SHELBY — Mr. Jesse William Bailes, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Century Care of Shelby.

Dana Howell
Died Feb. 10, 2007
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Ms. Dana Marie Howell, 40, of 103 Persimmon Drive, Apt. C, Grover, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at home.
She was born in Mecklenburg County. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Grover.
She is survived by her parents, Jimmie Lee and Kay McCarter Howell of Grover; son, David William Howell of Grover; daughter, Lisa Marie Howell of Grover; companion, Pete Morrison of Grover; and sisters, Leigh Howell of Grover and Kelly Crocker and husband, Michael, of Kings Mountain.
Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harris Funeral Home.

J.B. Falls
Died Feb. 12, 2007
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Jonah Butler “J.B.” Falls, 91, of 1013 York Road, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at White Oak Manor.
He was born in Cleveland County, son of the late George Patrick and Nona Ada Kiser Falls. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and has been a member of the American Legion for 55 years. He was owner and operator of Falls Exxon Service Station in Kings Mountain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Hord Falls; sisters, Jessie Howard, Callie Bumgardner, Grace Elgin, Lola Ramsey and Carrie Bumgardner; and brothers, Curtis Falls, Craig Falls and Floyd Falls.
He is survived by a son, Jim Falls of Kings Mountain; friend, Delores Stewart of Mount Holly; loving companion, Peggy Aderholdt of Kings Mountain; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home.
Funeral: Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel

Shirley Whitaker
Died Feb. 11, 2007
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Shirley Whitaker, 71, of 205 Edel St., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Cleveland County, a daughter of the late James Otis Barber and Fayetta White Barber. She was a member of Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, Blacksburg, S.C., and retired from Mauney Hosiery in Kings Mountain.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Denise Whitaker.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Billy Whitaker of Kings Mountain; sons, Tony Whitaker of Kings Mountain and Jeff Whitaker and wife, Angie, of Blacksburg; daughter, Donna Bradshaw and husband, Ralph, of Kings Mountain; brother, Marion Barber and wife, Ruby, of Charlotte; sister, Iris Biddy of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Whitaker, Chastity Parker, Jeremy Whitaker, Ashley Parker, Lisa Parker and Miranda Parker; and one great-grandson, Dalton Smith.
Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harris Funeral Home.

Margaret Wilkie
Died Feb. 12, 2007
SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Ruth Hamrick Wilkie, of 1541 Kings Road, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a retired employee of First National Bank in Shelby and a longtime member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where she served for years on the Social Ministry Committee. During the 1950s, she was president of the P.T.A. at Jefferson School.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Manie Marvin Wilkie; parents, Rodney Justice Hamrick and Cora Alice McKee Hamrick; sister, Mildred Hamrick Lattimore; and brother, Howard Hamrick.
She is survived by one son, Ludy Marvin Wilkie of the home; nephew, Mike Lattimore of Tennessee; good neighbors, Willie and Brenda Goforth of Shelby; several nieces and other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday at Ascension Lutheran Church after the service and other times at the home.

Ernest Hopper
Aug. 22, 1928 – Feb. 11, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Ernest Hopper, 78, of Shelby Manor, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he retired from Tedder Motor Co. and was a farmer. He was a member of North Lafayette Street Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gardie Lanford Hopper and Sally Smith Hopper; his wife, Marjorie Allen Hopper; son, Roger Hopper; brothers. Graham Hopper, Roy Hopper, Austin Hopper, Bill Hopper and L.G. Hopper; sisters, Eula Hopper and Estel Hopper Grigg; one grandchild and a daughter-in-law, Kay Tesseneer Hopper.
He is survived by sons, Jerry Hopper, Steve Hopper and wife, Angie, and Daniel Hopper, all of Shelby, and Bobby Hopper and wife, Janie, of Gaffney, S.C.; daughters, Betty Emery and husband, Randy, and Linda Kidd and husband, Mark, all of Shelby, and Lisa Tesseneer and husband, Homer, of Boiling Springs; a brother, Clyde Hopper; two sisters, Hannah Padgett of Shelby and Sara Bridges of Ellenboro; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services and other times at the home of his daughter, Betty, at 1304 Gilbert St., Shelby.
Funeral: Wednesday at 2 p.m. at North Lafayette Street Baptist Church

Jesse Bailes
Died Feb. 11, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Jesse William Bailes, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Century Care of Shelby.
Born in York County, S.C., he was a son of the late William Thomas and Mary Frances Neely. He retired from Doran Textiles and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Towery Bailes; brothers, Roy Bailes, Sam Bailes, Carl Bailes and Jack Bailes; and a sister, Rebecca Hamrick.
He is survived by stepsons, Gene Towery of Shelby, Toney Towery of Belwood and Robert Towery, Mickey Towery and Sherrill Towery, all of Casar; stepdaughters, Judy Skates and ReVonda Morgan, both of Shelby; brothers, Ben Bailes of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Charles Bailes of Hickory; sisters, Grace Hyder, Lucille Robinson, Martha Bailes, Betty Raines, Katherine Sailors, Della Price and Doris Jones, all of Shelby, and Ann Orr of Charleston, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.
Funeral: Graveside Thursday at 3 p.m. at Double Shoals United Methodist Church cemetery
