Gene McKee

ELLENBORO — Mr. Horace Eugene McKee, 79, of 1177 Mount Olivet Church Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Cleveland County, the son of the late Horace Shafter McKee and Ruth Grigg McKee. He served in the Navy in World War II and retired after 21 years as a chief cook aboard several naval vessels. He also retired from Mack’s Livermush.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steve Allan McKee, and two brothers, Glenn McKee and Hillard McKee.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen McKinley McKee; a son, Tom McKee and wife, Gwan, of Caroleen; daughters, Ann McCraw and husband, Jimmy, of Shelby, Carol McNeilly and husband, Danny, of Hollis and Lynn Bruce of Granite Falls; a brother, Roger McKee of Boonville; a sister, Mary Ellen Wellmon of Shelby; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Piney Mountain Baptist Church.

Glynn Panther
July 28, 1913 – Feb. 14, 2007
SHELBY — Mrs. Lola Glynn Lawson Panther, 93, formerly of 308 Mallard Drive, Grover, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at White Oak Manor of Shelby.
She was born in Gwinnett County, Ga., a daughter of the late Benjamin and Ida Mae Moon Lawson. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She retired from the Lily Mill after 35 years and was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church. She loved all sports and was a great supporter of Shelby High School athletics. She was an intense Atlanta Braves fan, traveling to Atlanta for many games. She was also an avid bowler, bowling well past 80 years young.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.K. “Ken” Panther, and her sisters, Billie L. Beam, Lola L. Pheagin and Nora L. Cash.
She is survived by her son, James C. “Buck” Panther of Grover; her daughter, Norma “Joan” Young of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, James L. Panther and Mona Panther Trivett, both of Shelby, Dr. Randy L. Panther of Montgomery, Ala., Delice Young of Huntersville, Glenda Ann Howle and husband, Emmet, of Charlotte, Fred “Trip” Young of Newnan, Ga., and David Young and wife, Judiane, of Cornelius; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a special nephew, the Rev. Bill Pheagin of Shelby; and a special niece, Gladys Ledbetter of Kings Mountain.

SHELBY — Jeannette Allen, 73, of 102 Indian Creek Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., and a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, Va., she retired with her family to Shelby, after working in quality control at Dynaric Corp. for 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Ryan and Martha Winstrom Ryan; a son, Randell Joseph Allen; a daughter, Barbara Jean Allen; brothers, Robert Ryan and Red Ryan; and a sister, Ruth Sanchez.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha McDaniel and John Brown of Shelby; sons, Raymond Allen of Shelby and Jimmy Allen of Miami; grandchildren, Barbara Ann McDaniel-Bowker, Wayne Richard McDaniel Jr. and Christopher Lee Mitchell, all of Shelby; great-grandchildren, Del Hunt, Maranda Hoyle, Brettanie Hoyle, Nathaniel McDaniel and Sky Garrett; and a number of stepgrandchildren and extended family members.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Douglas Michael “Hot Rod” Towery, 41, of S. Cherokee Street, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a son of Hubert Dean Towery and Christine Rosella Paysour Towery. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lincolnton and worked as a flasher.
He is survived by his fiancée, Vickie Hutchins of the home; a son, Jason Hutchins and wife, Gilda, of Kings Mountain; daughter, Michelle Hutchins of Chocowinity; brothers, Harold Towery and wife, Tammy, of Lincolnton and Cecil Paysour and wife, Vickie, of Greenville, Texas; sisters, Wanda Hinkle of Lincolnton and Rita Watts and husband, Dwight, of Fallston; aunts, Diane Zeigler of Lincolnton and Elizabeth Lilly of Hiddenite; two nieces, two nephews and five grandchildren.

EARL — Mr. George Rufus Francis, 73, of 2811 Blacksburg Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Avery and Alta Bridges Francis. He retired as a price administrator with Arco Oil and was an Army veteran with service in Korea. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was past master and lifetime member of Stateline Lodge No. 375 in Grover. He was a city councilman of Earl since 1989.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Stevie Garland; his sisters, Elizabeth Kimsey and Dixie Edmondson; and his brother, Bobby Francis.
He is survived by his wife, Lena McSwain Francis of the home; a son, George Francis of Illinois; two daughters, Frankie Ramey and husband, Tom, of Earl and Traci Hoppes and husband, Delane, of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Wooley

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Betty Smith Wooley, 76, of 706 Princeton Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Earnest and Ada Ware Yates. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and retired from Mauney Hosiery after 50 years.
She was also preceded in death by brothers, Bud Yates, Harvey Yates and Jackie Yates, and a sister, Peggy Blackburn.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Wooley of Kings Mountain; sons, Bennie Smith of Cherryville and Norman Smith and wife, Christy, of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Cathie Smith Goins and husband, Bobby, of Cherryville; stepson, Scottie Wooley of Asheville; stepdaughter, Shiela Lazenby and husband, Brian, of Gastonia; sisters, Frances McDaniel, Dot Smith and husband, Ken, and Joann Morrow and husband, Larry, all of Kings Mountain; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
