McCOY HUGHES DAVENPORT, 92, of Mt Tabor community near Creswell died December 30, 2001 at Chowan Hospital. He was born in Washington County and was the son of the late Daniel and Mary Phelps Davenport. He was a retired crane operator with Weyerhaueser Paper Company. Survivors include his second wife: Dell Davis Davenport; sons: Franklin, Hubert, and William Davenport; stepsons: Dallas and Keith Sawyer; daughters: Doris Hudson, Janice Brabble, Grace Bray, and Barbara Booth; 35 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and six step-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Davenport. A funeral was held at Mt. Tabor Free Will Baptist Church and burial followed in the church cemetery.
ARTHUR JAMES BRYANT, 94, of Gum Neck died July 4, 2003 in Washington County Hospital. He was born in Tyrrell County on February 1, 1909 and was the son of the late Tom and Lythie B. Bryant. He was formerly employed as a logger and farmer. Survivors include one son: James T. Bryant; two sisters: Lennie Spruill and Alma Collins; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held at Piney Grove Church of Christ and burial followed in the church cemetery.
MARIE HASSELL VANHORNE, 90, of Virginia Beach died July 12, 2003 at her home. She was born May 4, 1913 in Creswell and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Edwards Hassell. She was a homemaker and the widow of Alfred M. VanHorne Sr. She is survived by three daughters: Mary Lou Forrest, Shelby Poe, and Glenndora Johnson; two sons: Alfred M. VanHorne Jr and Tom Poe; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church in Tyrrell County.
RUTH HETHCOX WOODLEY, 85, of Broad Street in Columbia died July 4, 2003 in Rocky Mount. She was born June 30, 1918 in Cabarrus County. In 1938 she married
Sam S. Woodley Sr, who preceded her in death. She worked as a legal secretary and was a member of St Andrew's Episcopal Church. She is survived by two daughters: Rachel Woodley Towell and Mary Ruth Anderson; a son: Sam S. Woodley Jr; two sisters: Ila Householder and Louise Webster; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
ALVAH WILBERT ALEXANDER JR, 69, of Creswell died July 20th at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Washington County and was the son of the late Alvah W. & Lucy Pritchett Alexander who survives. He was a retired electrician at Weyerhaeuser Corporation, a US Air Force veteran, real estate developer, and retired volunteer fireman. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife: Jean Davenport Alexander; two sons: Alvah W. "AL" Alexander III and Brad Alexander; one brother: Bobby Alexander; and two grandchildren. A funeral was held at Philippi Church of Christ in Cherry and burial followed in the church cemetery.
DENNIS RAY COMBS SR, 54, of Fort Landing Road died July 14, 2003 at his home. He was born in Tyrrell County and was employed in farming and construction. He is survived by his wife: Sherry R. Combs; daughters: Zhane Combs and Jenetta Norman; sons: Dennis Combs Jr and Ricky Norman; step-daughters: Tracy Respass and Shernae Jones; brothers: Craig and Karl Combs; and six grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Alligator Chapel Baptist Church and burial was in the community cemetery.
ANNIE BLANCH WHITE, 75, of Rowsom Street in Columbia died July 14, 2003 at Chownan Hospital. She was born in Tyrrell County and was the daughter of the late William D. & Elizabeth S. Marner. She was widowed and worked as a domestic. She was a member of Zion Grove Christian Church. She is survived by four daughters: Brenda Bond, Clydette Overton, Martina Spencer, and Annie Spencer; one sister: Celestine Fauntleroy; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral service was held at Zion Grove Christian Church.
IRA MATTHEW GRAY, 78, of Washington died August 11, 2003 in Beaufort County Hospital. He was born in Tyrrell County on July 1, 1925 and was the son of the late Henry Walker and Lonie Sutton Gray. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Holton Gray. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during WW II and was a retired equipment operator. He is survived by two sons: Mike and Don Gray; one stepdaughter: Rhonda Leggett; two sisters: Dorcas Craddock and Audrey Hilton; two brothers: George and Albert Gray; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A graveside service was held at Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
LONIE SUTTON GRAY, 98, of Columbia died August 5, 2003 at Country Oaks Manor in Hertford. She was born in Tyrrell County and was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Alexander Sutton. She was married
to Henry Walker Gray who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and member of Faith Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters: Darcus Craddock and Audrey Hilton; two sons: George and Albert Gray; one brother: Jerry Sutton; two sisters: Vadis Clander and Margaret Roughton; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Burial was in Azalea Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
KENNETH CARL SAWYER, 72, of Creswell died July 24, 2003 at Plumblee Nursing Center. He was born in Tyrrell County and was the son of the late Robert W. and Aleathia Clifton Sawyer. He was an Army veteran of WWII and retired production inspector with Locke Insulators and GE Corp. He is survived by one sister: Marshwood Kielian; and two nephews: Ronald and Donald Sawyer. A graveside service was held at Azalea Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
JOHNNY FRANKLIN BECK, 44, of Salem died June 11, 2003. He is survived by his wife; Lois Estelle Meador Beck; his father & mother: Joseph F. and Mary Beck; one sister: Debbie Moffett; and one brother: Phil Beck. A funeral was held at Lotz Salem Chapel and burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
IONA MORRIS TAYLOR, 90, of Creswell died June 19, 2003 at Chowan Hospital. She was born in Tyrrell County on October 3, 1912 and was the daughter of the late Joe Cephus Sadie Saint Elmore Brickhouse Morris. She was married
to Jack Taylor who preceded her in death. She was a retired secretary with the Tyrrell County Health Department. She is survived by nine nieces and nephews. Burial was in Sound Side Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
ULYLESS CLOUGH, 71, died at his Riverneck home on June 24, 2004. He was born October 22, 1932 and was the son of the late Douglas Irving and Dora Mae Spear Clough of Tyrrell County. He was a retired farmer but continued to operate Scuppernong Produce until his death. He was a 1952 graduate of CHS and a US Army veteran of the Korean War where he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He served one term as a Tyrrell County Commissioner and was a past president of the NC Potato Association. He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Vera Patrick Clough; two daughters: April Vaughn and Tobi Kirkman; four grandchildren; four brothers: Bill, J.D., Mac, and David Clough; one sister: Faye McCullum; and 19 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son: Lance Clough. A funeral was held at Soundside Missionary Baptist Church and burial followed in the church cemetery.
ESTHER GRAY HOLTON DAVENPORT, 69, of Columbia died at her home on June 21, 2004. She was born in Washington County and was the daughter of the late Herbert R. and Allie Ambrose Holton. She was a former librarian with the Tyrrell County Public Library and a sales representative for the Uniway Corporation. She is survived by two sons: Forest Lee Davenport and Hugh Thomas Davenport Jr; three sisters: Dolores Alexander, Lena Brown, and Mary Brown; and one brother: Herbert Holton Jr. She was preceded in death by one brother: Julian R. Holton and one sister: Eula Gray. A memorial service was held at Creswell United Methodist Church.
CHARLIE SPRUILL, 45, of Columbia died unexpectedly at his home on Soundside on June 19, 2004. He was born in Tyrrell County and was the son of Lindsey Earl and Adelia Clifton Spruill who survive. He owned his own logging and trucking business in Tyrrell County. He is survived by his wife Christy C. Spruill; two daughters: Jessica and Karen Spruill; four sons: Randy, Charlie Jr, Stephen, and Taylor Spruill; three sisters: Rhesa Davis, Lisa Meiggs, and Sharon Miller; and one brother: Joseph Miller. He was preceded in death by one brother: Lindsey Earl Spruill III. A funeral was held at Philippi Church of Christ in Cherry and burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was born December 10, 1933 in Tyrrell County and was the son of the late Olies B. and Myrtle Sykes Simmons of Frying Pan. He was a carpenter and a commercial fisherman. He was married
to Lorretta Roughton Simmons and is survived by one son, Hal Simmons; and one grandson. Burial was in Azalea Memorial Gardens.
HELEN VIRGINIA HASSELL, 59, of Columbia died May 28, 2004 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Philidelphia, PA and was the daughter of the late W.P. and Helen Fossett Fallon. She was married
to the late Gene F. Hassell and was a retired seamstress from Flair Manufacturing. She is survived by two daughters: Michele Tarkington and Taurus Hassell; one son: Gene Hassell, Jr; one sister; four brothers; and 10 grandchildren. She was buried in the Hassell family cemetery.
VIRGINIA LUDFORD RHODES, 90, of the Soundside community died on August 12, 2004 at her home. She was born in Tyrrell County on July 25, 1914 and was the daughter of the late Ephraim and Minnie Morris Ludford. She was married
to the late James Lee Roy Rhodes. She is survived by one daughter: June Rhodes Belangia; one sister: Dixie L. Brock; one brother: Shelton Ludford; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held at Soundside Missionary Baptist Church.
FLORIDA PEARL ARMSTRONG, 80, of the Scuppernong community of Tyrrell County died July 9, 2004 at Washington County Hospital. She was born in Tyrrell County and was the daughter of the late John A. and Addie Sutton Pledger. She was a retired nurse from Columbia Memorial Hospital and bookkeeper with Armstrong Heating & Air Conditioning. She is survived by a step-daughter: Sandra A. Marriner; five stepsons: Albert, Ricky, Craig, Jimmy, and Tony Armstrong; two sisters: Evelyn Aidock and Laura Yoder; one brother: J.A. Pledger; and many step-grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Robert Q. Davis and James A. Armstrong; one son: Ray Davis; a sister: Beatrice Vanhorn; three brothers: Melvin, James, and Walter Pledger; and two stepsons: David and James Armstrong. A funeral was conducted at Maitland Chapel and burial followed at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alligator community.
