Una Potter “Tootsie” Smith ~ Bolivia
Una Potter “Tootsie” Smith 79 of Bolivia died Wednesday January 7, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Smith was born in Brunswick County on January 2, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Monroe and Juanita Cooker Potter. She was preceded in death by two children, Gary Hunter and Kimberly Smith.
She is survived by three sons, Matthew Smith of Shallotte, Robert Lewis of Southport, Glen Hunter of Roxboro, a daughter, Vivian Hunter of New York; two brothers, Billy Potter of Bolivia, Wayne Potter of Port Royal, SC; a sister, Ella Mae Burris of Tennessee, 2 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday January 10, 2015 at 2pm at Peacock-Newnam &White Funeral Service Chapel, Southport with Reverend Dr. Ann Jahnes officiating. Burial will follow in the Northwood Cemetery
The family will receive friends from 7:30 until 9:00 Friday January 9th at the funeral home.

Michael Shawn Stutz—Boiling Spring Lakes
Mr. Michael Shawn Stutz, 48, of Southport, NC died Tuesday January 6, 2015 at his following a sudden illness
Mr. Stutz was born in Lexington, NC on April 22, 1966 and was the son of Bill Stutz of the home and the late Joyce Hanes Stutz. He was a former employee of Print Craft of Lexington. He was a member of Yaupon Beach Fire Department and was a dispatcher with Oak Island Police Department and a EMT.
Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Tammy Stutz of the home, a daughter, Patricia Stutz of the home; a brother, Dana Stutz and wife Patricia of Southport, a sister, Tara Durham and husband George of Boiling Spring Lakes, a nephew, Corey Kearns of Southport.
Funeral services will be held Friday January 9, 2015 at 6pm at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport with Reverend Charles Drew officiating.
Graveside services will be Saturday January 10, 2015 at 2pm at Reeds Baptist Church Cemetery, Lexington, NC

Ann Bernice Frommater ~ Bolivia
Ann Bernice Frommater, age 97, of Bolivia, North Carolina passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick.
Mrs. Frommater was born January 14, 1917, daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Thomas Seaman. She was wife of the late William R. Frommater and was also preceded in death by her daughter Janet Ruth Hrebin.
Survivors include three children, Randal A. Frommater and wife Martha of Bolivia, NC; Jill Richardson and husband Randall of Prosperity, SC; and Glen Frommater and wife Kim of St. Johns, Florida; four grandchildren, Liz Ward Sherman, Sandy Phillie, Nikki Stassi, and Chris Hrebin; and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 3:00pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, North Carolina with Reverend Garrett Albertson officiating.

Christine D. Rawley – Southport
Christine D. Rawley, 95 of Southport, NC passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Mrs. Rawley was born April 20, 1919 in Chicago, IL the daughter of the late Frank and Bernice Bronson. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Rawley was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Rawley; a son Jimmy Rawley; and three brothers Jimmy, Frank, and Ed Bronson.
Surviving is one son, Gene Rawley of Valparaiso, IN; four daughters Christine Keilman and husband John of St. James, NC, Karen Fleischhauer and husband Mark of Holden Beach, NC, Judy Drake and husband Daryl of Brookville, IN, and Geralyn Webb and husband Larry of Greenwood, IN; a brother Jerome Bronson of Chicago Ridge, IL; a cousin Melvin Zmudka of Cascade, IA; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on January 17, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3603 S. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Shirley Marie Vititoe ~ Southport
Shirley Marie Vititoe, 70, of Southport passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia.
Mrs. Vititoe was born January 1, 1945, daughter of the late Philip Copeland Hatch Jr. and Marie Anna Cook Hatch. She was an active member of Southport Baptist Church. Mrs. Vititoe was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very determined, compassionate and wise woman who was always giving to her family and community. Her quiet strength saw her through all of her life’s struggles. Mrs. Vititoe was preceded in death by her husband of many years, William Keith Vititoe in 1992.
Survivors include her son, Brian Keith Vititoe and fiancé Krys of Boiling Spring Lakes; two daughters Robin Renee Crump and husband Matt of Fayetteville and Kelly Vititoe Atkinson and husband Chris of Boiling Spring Lakes; one brother Warren Austin Hatch of Southport; one sister Sharon Darst of Boiling Spring Lakes; and five grandchildren, Alicia Atkinson, Brianna Vititoe, Noah Atkinson, Mikayla Crump, and Gehrum Crump.
Funeral services will be 3:00pm Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Southport Baptist Church with Reverend Gene Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in Cape Fear Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Tuesday at Southport Baptist Church and also from 2:30-3pm before the service on Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to SECU Hospice of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, North Carolina 28422.

Linder Hickman Elwood – Southport
Linder Hickman Elwood, 83 of Southport, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Mrs. Elwood was born October 15, 1931 in Southport, the daughter of the late Pete and Clayton Hickman. She was a strong Christian woman. At the time of her passing she was the second oldest living member of Southport Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Elwood a retired paralegal having worked for over 30 years with the law firm Prevatte & Prevatte PLLC in Southport. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Mrs. Elwood was preceded in death by her husband Earl Lloyd Elwood, Sr. and a sister Doris Schultz.
Surviving is her three sons, Earl Lloyd Elwood, Jr. and wife Angela; Stephen Douglas Elwood and wife Sharon; and Jeffery Lee Elwood and wife Kelly; a nephew Terry Stephens and wife Beverly, all of Boiling Spring Lakes; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Southport Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Ann Jahnes officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service in Southport.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southport Presbyterian Church, 1025 East Moore Street, Southport, NC 28461.

Johnie William Vereen, III ~ Oak Island
Johnie William Vereen, III, age 60 of Oak Island passed away Friday, January 2, 2015 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia.
Mr. Vereen was born May 23, 1954, son of Johnie William Vereen, Jr. and the late Delight Gay Vereen. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island. Mr. Vereen was mayor of Oak Island for four terms. He was a talented woodcrafter and made many beautiful pieces. He was an outstanding son, husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Vereen was a good friend to everyone and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He will be missed by so many.
Survivors include his wife Jane Vereen of the home; his father Johnie Vereen, Jr. and his wife Diane of Oak Island; son Chad Suttles and wife Samantha of Oak Island; one brother Eric Vereen of Leland; and one granddaughter Analeigh Jane Suttles.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Monday, January 5, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island with Reverend Charlie Carter and Reverend Gene Tomlinson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dr. Glendora Bateman – Boiling Spring Lakes
Dr. Glendora Bateman, 70, of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at her home.
Dr. Bateman was born March 22, 1944 in Columbia, NC, the daughter of the late Isaac and Mabel Bateman. Dr. Bateman spent her career working in mental health. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She had a love for nature, gardening, cooking and reading. She had a relaxed and calming personality.
Surviving is her daughter Kalyn Jarvis and husband Alan of Ocean Isle Beach; a sister Gerry O’Neal and husband Jimmy of Southport; two grandchildren, Kallie Jarvis and Berry Jarvis; and two nieces, Jamie Stratton and Amy O’Neal.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Bill Cottingham officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy of North Carolina.

Wayne B. Branch – St. James
Wayne B. Branch, 74 of St. James died December 29, 2014 after a long battle with heart disease. He was born March 15 1940 in New Bedford, Massachusetts the son of the late Herbert C Branch and Edna Blankinship Branch.
Mr. Branch was a graduate of the Rivers School and University of Rochester. He served in the US Navy as a lieutenant having graduated from Officers Candidate School and the War College in Newport, RI. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Regina C. Branch; a brother Paul C. Branch of Florida; a sister Janet Rattray of NC; a step-sister Kathryn MacGillivray of Massachusetts and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sister-in- law Margaret McDonald and many great nieces and nephews of Massachusetts. A memorial service at the Blankinship family cemetery in Marion, Massachusetts is planned for the spring of 2015. A man of the sea and the mountains he was known to toast a friend. Michael Vincent Shay ~ Southport
Michael Vincent Shay, age 67, of Southport passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 at his residence.
Mr. Shay was born on April 15, 1947 in Washington D.C., the son of Richard and Rosemary Trott of Florence, AL and was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Shay.
Mike enjoyed taking long walks with his dog Savannah in downtown Southport. His hobbies also included fishing with his son-in-law and grandson and he enjoyed photography. He was affectionately known by his grandchildren as “Poppi.”
Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Kelly; a son, Aaron Shay of Durham, NC, daughters, Brittany Shay of Newburgh, NY; Jenifer Kelly-Straus, (David) of New Orleans, LA, Erin Mitchell, (Ray) of Southport, NC, sister Cheryl Ferzoco, (Steve) of Florence AL and five grandchildren, Elijah Shay, Connor Mitchell, Sebastian Strauss, Madison Strauss, and Zoe Strauss. Mike lived in Cornwall NY prior to moving to Southport.
Services will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 30th at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Chapel in Southport. Interment will follow at Cape Fear Memorial Park.

Lydia Hewett
Lydia Jane Fulford Hewett, 100, of Shallotte, surrounded by her family, died May 12 at Autumn Care of Shallotte.
She was born in Brunswick County on Dec. 15, 1909, a daughter of the Isaiah David and Mary Etta Hewett Fulford. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles S. Hewett Sr.; sons, Charles S. Hewett Jr. and wife Betty Anne, Beamon Hewett and Gene A. Hewett; a daughter, Barbara Gore; two grandchildren; and 11 siblings.
Surviving are a son, Tony Hewett and wife Melissa; three daughters, Betty Jablonski and husband Harry, Bernice Johnson and husband William, and Carol Reynolds and husband Kellum; two daughters-in-law, Ruth Hewett and Nelda Hewett; a son-in-law, Odell Gore; 29 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Della Pigott.
Funeral services were in Calvary Baptist Church. Interment followed in Brunswick Memorial Gardens.

Satu Harris
Satu Harris, 38, of Oak Island, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident May 7.
She was born in Long Island, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 1971, a daughter of Ike and Tuula Gren Ostrove of Falmouth, Maine. She was a customer service representative with Verizon Wireless of Wilmington.
Survivors in addition to her parents are sons, Daniel Harris IV and Matthew Harris of Oak Island; a daughter, Sarah Harris of Baldwin, N.Y.; and a sister, Liisa Abbatiello of Falmouth, Maine.
A memorial service was at 700 Ocean Drive and Womble St., Oak Island.
