Leon C. Hicks Sr. — Oak Island
Leon C. Hicks Sr. dies at 97, Oak Island, NC.
Leon Hicks passed away on Tuesday, Oct 15th, after several weeks of failing health. He had been a resident of Oak Island/Southport since 2007 where he lived with his son and daughter-in-law.
Leon was originally from Atkins, Virginia, where he graduated from high school, and then he completed a business college program at Marion College, VA. He served in the National Guard during World War II while employed as an industrial engineer for Burlington Industries. He continued to be employed by Burlington Industries for 43 years managing operations in Marion, in the NC towns of Randleman, Burlington, and Wadesboro, and Harriman, TN. Mr. Hicks also worked at many other locations on temporary assignments throughout his career. He married icon the “prettiest girl he had ever seen,” Dorothy Louise Smith of Rural Retreat, VA, in 1939. Dorothy preceded Leon in death by nearly 18 years. He will be buried next to her near their birth homes.
Leon was best known for his devotion to his family, to worthy causes that promoted the welfare of others, and for his patriotism. He was also an avid gardener and had a special touch in growing beautiful azaleas. He was one of the oldest members of the Rotary Club (66 years). He had been an active member of the United Methodist Church for his entire life. He and Dorothy were especially supportive of the church in Harriman, TN were Leon served on the church vestry. Most recently he was active at Ocean View United Methodist Church at Oak Island, NC. He was an avid golfer, having hit a hole-in-one at age 88. He enjoyed bird-watching even on his last day on earth. He loved the beach and especially the family reunions he convened at Ocean Isle Beach, NC for over 40 years. He is North Carolina’s oldest recipient of a certificate in computer literacy. When asked about the secret to a long life he replied, “Stay busy, and never stop learning.”
Leon is survived by four sons and their wives: Preston, Denny, Leon Jr., and Clifford. He has 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and his oldest sister, Rosemond Coulthard.
Viewing and family gathering will begin Saturday, October 19, 2013 at noon at Seaver Brown Funeral Home in Marion, VA. Graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM at Rose Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Leon’s wishes are that memorial gifts be sent to Harriman United Methodist Church, 601 Queen Ave, Harriman, TN 37748. Rotarians are encouraged to contribute to the polio eradication program.

Maxine Cahours — Boiling Spring Lakes
Maxine Cahours, of Boiling Spring Lakes, Southport, North Carolina, after several years of failing health went to be with the Lord on the 12th of October, 2013.
Maxine was originally from the Detroit, Michigan area, where she graduated high school and subsequently worked as a bookkeeper for the Chrysler Corporation. Following World War II , she married icon her high-school sweetheart Louis J. Cahours, Jr. As part of his job with General Motors, they subsequently lived in Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia before retiring to North Carolina in the late 1980′s. Her beloved Louis preceded her in death by some 20 years. Maxine was a member of, and as long as her health permitted, was active in the Joy Assembly of God church of Southport, teaching a Sunday School class there. She was also active in the social life of the local community and made it a point of ministering to others.
She is survived by one brother, one daughter, three sons and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are to be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, the 19th of October at the Northwood Cemetery, N. Fodale Ave, in Southport.

James Bryan Pilkenton, Sr., “Papa Jim” — Oak Island
James Bryan Pilkenton, Sr., “Papa Jim”, age 80, of Oak Island, beloved brother, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Friday, October 11, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after recent illnesses.
He was born in Lenoir, NC on October 26, 1932 to J.C. Pilkenton and Atha Livingston Pilkenton. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1959 as an Aviation Ordnanceman on the USS Midway. He worked for Nabisco as a sales representative for 25 years in Naples Florida where he was known as “Cookie Man”.
He retired to Oak Island in 1989 to be near his beloved grandchildren. As well as being an awesome Grandfather, he was a Greeter (Hugger) at First Baptist Church of Oak Island where he also served on the Baptist Men’s Feeding Team. Papa Jim with his compassionate heart and loving spirit truly touched countless lives and brought smiles to many.
Surviving are his two sisters, Jean P. Davis and her husband, Gene of Davidson, NC, Marcy P. Reid and her husband, Norman of Davidson, NC; his 3 children, Jamie P. Lloyd and her husband David of Oak Island, NC, James B. Pilkenton, Jr. (Bubba) of Naples, FL, Laurie P. Stermer and her husband, David of Wilmington, NC; His 8 grandchildren, Jason Lloyd and wife Kristin, Bryan Stermer, Megan Lloyd and fiancée Kyle, Ashley Sgambotti and husband Ray, Peter Lloyd and fiancée Brittany, Courtney Williams and husband Ben, J. Thomas Lloyd, Lauren Pilkenton and his 2 great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Bella.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island, 4608 East Oak Island, Dr., Oak Island, NC.
The family will receive friends from 12-1pm at the church prior to the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Oak Island Sound System Fund.

Mary Kathleen Weldy “Kat” Kazer – Southport
Mary Kathleen Weldy “Kat” Kazer went to be with the Lord on October 12, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center in Wilmington.
She was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on May 2, 1931. After working 42 years at Lorilland in Greensboro she had many work friends, as well as, her neighbors at Holden Beach and more recently at her home in Southport that will miss her fondly. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Kazer.
Mary leaves behind her daughter Patricia Dillard and husband Andy, Susan Forsyth and husband David, and son Richard Kazer and wife Audrey. Mary had six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren whom she gave love and advice. She leaves behind her special friend and companion of many years, Betty Hudson.
From above she leaves her thanks to her primary doctor, Dr. Isenhour and the nurses at his office and also to those as hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted by Salem Funeral Home, 2599 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina where visitation will occur from 12-2pm on Monday, October 14, 2013.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 at Woodland Cemetery in Winston-Salem.

Ernestine Gillikin Edwards – Oak Island
Ernestine, known to her friends and family as Teenie, and her grandchildren as AMA, passed away at her home on January 3, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving family, and her deeply devoted husband of 54 years, William H Edwards, Sr. The high school sweethearts graduated from New BernHigh School in 1956. Teenie then went on to graduate from TexasChristianUniversity (class of 1959) and was a social worker for 38 years. She was an active member of John Wesley UMC, Charleston, SC for 15 years where she served as DCE and SS Superintendent for several years. She is currently a member of Trinity UMC, Southport, NC, where she enjoyed her Ladies Circle, Sunday School class and Dinner for 6 group. She was a servant of God, a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother. She will be remembered by many as a welcoming hostess, ideal neighbor, and lifelong friend. Teenie enjoyed playing cards, walks on the beach, cross-stitching, reading, traveling and socializing. A wonderful cook and baker, Teenie loved being surrounded by a house full of family and friends.
In addition to her husband Bill, Ernestine Edwards is survived by her son, William H. Edwards, Jr., and his wife Faith of Charleston, SC, her daughter, Jennifer Edwards Kanapaux and her husband, Brian of Holly Springs, NC, her 6 grandchildren: William H Edwards, III, C. Tyler Edwards, and Erin M. Edwards of Charleston, SC, Lauren Kanapaux Litaker (Justin) of Charlotte, NC, and Russell B. Kanapaux and Haley A. Kanapaux of Holly Springs, NC, her sister, Peggy Gillikin Beaman of Greensboro, NC, brother in laws, Cyril Edwards (Mildred) of New Bern, NC, and Stewart Edwards (Loretta) of Charlotte, NC, sister–in law, Annette Edwards Brown (Michael) of New Bern, NC , 8 nieces and 8 nephews and many other loving family members.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, Ernest and Annie Mae Gillikin, and her 2 sisters: Sybil Gillikin Sullivan, and Mary Elizabeth (Sammie) Gillikin White.
Teenie’s life will be celebrated at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, North Carolina on January 11, 2014 at 1 pm.
As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made in her memory to either “Marie Royal Circle” at Trinity UMC 209 E. Nash St, Southport, NC 28461 (or) to Liberty Hospice 1020 Ocean Hwy W, Supply, NC28465.

Frank Othellis Morris – Boiling Spring Lakes
Frank Othellis Morris, 84 of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away on Friday, January 03, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Morris was born November 6, 1929 in Sumter, SC the son of the late Everette Lee Morris Sr. and Goldie Jerrell Morris. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII as a member of the 82nd Airborne. Mr. Morris attended Clemson University on the GI Bill, graduating in 1952 with a degree in civil engineering. He was retired from the US Geological Survey and also retired from the State of North Carolina Department of Public Health – Water Resources Division. Mr. Morris was a member of the Elk’s Lodge and a member of The Lakes Golf Club in Boiling Spring Lakes. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel Ruth Duckett Morris and a sister Vera Goody.
Surviving is two sons, William H. Morris and Clarence G. Duckett both of Red Oak, Iowa; a daughter Elaine Morris – Moxness of Dale City, Virginia; two brothers Everette Lee Morris Jr. of New Jersey, and Homer Morris of Georgia; a sister Frances Morris of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; twenty – six great – grandchildren; and one great – great – granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Drew Bunch officiating.

Hance C. Boswell – Boiling Spring Lakes
Mr. Hance C. Boswell, age 82 of Boiling Spring Lakes died Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia.
Mr. Boswell was born on October 21, 1931 in Columbus County, son of the late Joe Oscar Boswell and Carrie Sikes Boswell. He was owner and operator of Boswell’s Grocery in Loris before moving to Boiling Spring Lakes in 1971 where he worked construction until opening Boswell’s Gas and Grocery in Boiling Spring Lakes in the early 80’s until retiring. He was past mayor of Boiling Spring Lakes having served one term. Mr. Boswell was preceded in death by his first wife Estelene Hardee Boswell who died in 2005, two sisters, Gladys Wright and Myrtice Buffkin and one brother Alton Boswell.
Survivors include his wife Betty J. Ward Boswell of Boiling Spring Lakes; one son Ronnie Boswell and wife Phyllis of Wilmington; two daughters Karen Holley and husband Greg and Sue Orr, all of Boiling Spring Lakes; three step-sons Rance Ward and wife Paula, Brett Ward and wife Tresa, and Dustin Ward all of Ohio; one step-daughter April Anderson and husband Paul of Ohio; one sister Geraldine Allen and husband Vernon of Tabor City; five grandchildren Cassandra Lester, Crystal Boswell, Damon Bolduc, Summer Ennis, and Quintin Holley; five step grandchildren Amanda Penwell, Drake Blackburn, Dustin Ward, Nina Ward, and Arishala Stamper; and two great grandchildren Alexis Boswell and Brandon Boswell
A memorial service will be 3:00 pm Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel in Southport with Reverend Drew Bunch officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 to 3:00 at the funeral home.

Leila Victoria Applegate — Southport
Leila Victoria Nichols Applegate quietly passed away December 31, 2013 after a long illness. She was surrounded by many family members and friends. A devoted wife and mother, she will be sorely missed. Leila was born and raised in Southport before moving to Manasquan, NJ where she and her husband Ted raised their three children and ran a very successful construction business. Leila and Ted retired back to her birthplace in Southport in 1985. She loved her family unconditionally and was known for her generous spirit.
She was preceded in death by her husband Theodore Lambert Applegate and her parents, Charles Nichols and Alice Stanley Nichols Crockett.
She is survived by three children: Theodore Lambert Applegate, Jr. and wife Marcia of Southport, Barbara Alice Applegate of Supply, and Victoria Lee Applegate Evans and husband Victor Thomas Evans of Manasquan, New Jersey; two grandchildren: Jamie Lee Evans and Jacob Thomas Evans; four brothers: Edwin Daniel Nichols of Elk, Washington; Charles Curtis Nichols, Lowell Thomas Nichols, and Wallace Jackson Nichols of Southport; and many nieces, nephews, and other dear relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, January 3, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home in Southport.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 960 Southport-Supply Road, Bolivia.

Dora Mae Puleo – Southport
Dora Mae Puleo, 78 of Southport passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport.
Ms. Puleo was born May 10, 1935 in Bennettsville, SC the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Davis Wilkes. Ms. Puleo was a charming little lady who loved life, people, and especially her family. She will be truly missed by all that knew her. Ms. Puleo was preceded in death by two daughters Carolyn Lambert and Annette Williams; two brothers; four sisters; and a grandson Sebastian Puleo.
Surviving is her son Jimmy Puleo of Supply; a daughter Rose Goins and husband Dwayne of Southport; a sister Ethel Todd of Bennettsville, SC; ten grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in the Cape Fear Memorial Park Mausoleum with Reverend Lewis Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service in Southport.

Mathew Clint Skipper – Southport
Mathew Clint Skipper, age 29, of Southport died Tuesday, December 24, 2013.
Mathew was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 8, 1984, son of Allen Skipper and Sharon Lamb Skipper of Southport. He worked as a heavy equipment operator installing cable.
Survivors in addition to his parents include one brother Julian Lee Skipper of Wilmington; one sister Heather Skipper of Southport; and a beloved nephew Christian Skipper.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Generations Church, Long Beach Road, Southport.

George Brookshire — Florida City, Florida
Mr. George Robert Brookshire, age 64, of Florida City, Florida passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013.
Mr. Brookshire was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 29, 1949, son of the late Harold and Reba Brookshire. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Brookshire was employed at Carolina Power and Light for over 25 years until he moved to Florida. While in Florida, he worked for Florida Power and Light.
Survivors include his loving wife Elaine Yow Brookshire; two sons, Mike Holcomb and wife Beverly and Mickey Holcomb and fiancé Jackie Green; two daughters, LuAnn Barwick and husband Allan and Michelle Holcomb; 10 grandchildren, Brian Holcomb, Brooke Holcomb, Joshua Holcomb, Joshua Green, Jordan Green, Lacey Green, Samantha Stiller, Nicholas Stiller, Ashley Papandrew, and Allison Papandrew; and 2 great grandchildren, Hailey Holcomb and Ryder Norwood. Mr. Brookshire is also survived by his extended family, Pat Millis, Kendall and Sharon McCarter, Shannon and Jake Smith, Kendra McCarter and fiancé Brad Hensley, and a long time friend Cecil Franck.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday, December 23, 2013 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Charles Drew officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Cape Fear Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Michael Holcomb, Mickey Holcomb, Cecil Franck, Billy Smart, O.G. Markham, Donald Johnson, and David Watts. Honorary pallbearers will be Nicholas Stiller, Joshua Holcomb, and Brian Holcomb.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, Community Hospice Foundation, 117 Village Rd NE # E, Leland, NC 28451.
