June Maria Stannus, 90 of Southport, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Ms. Stannus was born May 30, 1924 in Newark, NJ.

Mary “Ellen” Miller - Southport
Mary “Ellen” Miller, 98 of Southport, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Carillon Assisted Living Center. Mrs. Miller was born September 19, 1916 in Illinois, the daughter of the late Homer and Mary Bell Wilson.
Mrs. Miller was a long time resident of Rock Island, Illinois where her husband, the late Dr. James A. Miller, had his Urology practice. She was a very active volunteer for many different organizations in Rock Island. Upon their retirement, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida. There they were members of the Vero Beach Yacht Club and spent twenty five years until the passing of her husband. Mrs. Miller moved to St. James in 2004 and later to Carillon Assisted Living. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport.
Surviving are her three daughters, Mary Jean Nay of Bolivia, North Carolina, Patricia Ann Biemiller of Lilburn, Georgia, and Margaret Lynn Barkley of Beaverton, Oregon; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, cards of sympathy may be sent to the family c/o Mary Jean Nay, 482 Riverwood Drive SE, Bolivia, NC 28422.

B. Lorraine Geissler - Southport formerly of Pennsylvania
B. Lorraine Geissler 90, of Southport, formerly of Hatboro, Pennsylvania passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at her daughter’s home in Southport, North Carolina.
Mrs. Geissler was born February 3, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She spent her childhood in Totowa Borough and Woodbury New Jersey and moved to Philadelphia PA during her teen years before moving to Hatboro, Pennsylvania in 1955. Mrs. Geissler was very patriotic and loved the United States. She was an active Girl Scout leader and an avid bowler. Mrs. Geissler was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Robert H. Geissler, two step-brothers, Albert and Robert Ryan, her brother, Jack Bilson, and a sister, Jean MacDonald.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Singley and husband Harry of Southport, North Carolina and Roberta DiDeo and husband Daniel of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Stephanie, David, Paul, Mark, and Elizabeth; and three great grandchildren, Sydney, Joshua, and Lucas.
Funeral services: friends and family are invited to call from 1-2 pm at Peacock Newnam White Funeral Home Southport, NC, Saturday, December 13, 2014. Friends and family are invited to call; 9:30 – 10:30 am at A. Groh Schneider Funeral Home, Hatboro, PA, Friday, December 19, 2014. Interment will be private and immediately following at George Washington Memorial Park, Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Alberta McFadden Given – Bedford, Texas
Alberta McFadden Given 87, of Bedford, Texas died Tuesday 12/09/2014. Formerly of Elkview, WV and Oak Island, NC, she was preceded in death by husband Paul A. Given.
She is survived by her children: Paul D. Given, (wife, Debby), Lincolnton, GA, Sarah Wilson, (husband, Michael), Karen Given, Bedford, TX, Marla Grant, (husband William), Azle, TX, 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.
She was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. She has served as elder, Ridglea Presbyterian Women Moderator, and Liaison for North Tarrant County Presbyterian Women. She received a Life Member Achievement Award for her Service to Presbyterian Women.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Emmanuel Pres. Church or Ridglea Presby. Church.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held Friday, December 12, 2014 at Emmanual Presbyterian Church, Bedford TX.
Interment will be in Cape Fear Memorial Park in Southport, NC.

Martha Nell Lichty - Boiling Spring Lakes
Martha Nell Lichty, 89, of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Mrs. Lichty was born February 23, 1925 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, daughter of the late Athel Attwood Raulsten and Nellie Cown Raulston. She was raised on a farm in southern Missouri. After graduating from Brosley High she moved to California with her older sister, Helen. She worked at an airplane factory during WWII where she met and married icon Olin Lichty after he was discharged from the Navy. They lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa for the next 60 years. When they retired she liked to travel in their motorhome and spent many winters in the southwest. She loved traveling, knitting, sewing and gardening. We liked to hear about her time on the farm where they kept their dairy products cool in the horse trough and picking her father’s cotton to pay for their schoolbooks. She said they always had a small cash income because her father lost a leg in WWI.
She was preceded in death by her husband Olin James Lichty, Jr., a brother Don Raulston, a sister Helen Allen and a great grandchild Christopher. Survivors include her son, Dan Lichty of Boiling Spring Lakes; two brothers Gene and Bernard Raulston; 3 grandchildren, Jim Collett of Roy, Washington, Sarah Enarson of Villisca, Iowa, and Jessica Lichty of Boiling Spring Lakes; 7 great grandchildren, Hayley, Robert, Kendi, Bethany, Ryan, Amanda, and Jerry; her dog Clyde, and a cat Suzie.
She will be dearly missed.
Burial will be in Orange Township, Iowa at a later date.

Grace Elizabeth Faust - Southport
Grace Elizabeth Faust, formerly of Valley Forge, PA and now of Southport, NC died Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Dosher Skilled Care Nursing Center.
She was born on May 22, 1920 to Anna and Bill Bernhard (both deceased) in Allentown, PA. She graduated from Allentown High School and later married icon Lewis J. Faust (deceased) also of Allentown.
Grace was the sister of Elwood Bernhard (deceased) of Allentown. She had 2 Children: a daughter, Jill A. Webb (husband, John E. Webb, deceased) of St James Plantation, Southport, NC and a son, James J. Faust (deceased) of Maryland (wife, Gail).
She has 4 grandsons: Jeffrey Faust and Ryan Faust of Maryland and Brooks Webb (and 2 great grandson’s: Ryker and Brent) and Chad Webb, of Greenville, SC. She has 2 nephews: Larry Bernhard and Lee Bernhard of Allentown, PA.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Allentown, PA.

James Robert “Jimmy” Helms – Oak Island
James Robert “Jimmy” Helms, 53 of Oak Island died on Friday, December 5, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Helms was born January 6, 1961 in Northridge, California, the son of the late Martin Luther Helms and Susan Cortiana Helms. He was a musician, having played guitar in many local churches and venues.
Mr. Helms is survived by three brothers, Mark Helms of California, Mike Helms and Robert Helms both of Oak Island; and several cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 11, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend JB Helms officiating.

Wayne Madden Walker – Southport
Wayne Madden Walker, 98 of Southport, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mr. Walker was born July 24, 1916 in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Wendell and Mabel Walker. Mr. Walker has been a farmer and had worked for the Mohawk Area Schools in Pennsylvania. He was a member of Ocean View United Methodist Church and the Oak Island Lions Club. Preceding him in death was his loving wife LaGene Walker; a son Arnot Walker; a brother; and a sister.
Surviving are his five children; Gerry (Gayle) Walker of Oak Island, Karen Henzel of Boiling Spring Lakes, Rebecca Malik of Willow Springs, Linda Walker of Florida, and Dwight (Barbara) Walker of Lake Tahoe, California; 10 grandchildren, Gayleen (Carl) Smith, Greg (Leigh) Walker, Grant (Amy) Walker, Eric Henzel, Marc Henzel, Laura (Eric) Wilson, Naveen (Amber) Malik, Maksim Malik, Ayesha (William) Waggaman and Ryan (Danielle) Walker; and 15 great grandchildren, Brittany (Aaron) Holmes, Madison Walker, Lindsay Walker, Evan Walker, Kate Walker, Natalie Henzel, Aiden Wilson, Jack Wilson, Oliver Malik, Archie Malik, Gavin Hildreth, William H Waggaman V, Samuel Waggaman, Delaney Waggaman, and Asher Walker.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Ocean View United Methodist Church with Pastor Fred Roberts and Reverend Jim Shaver officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ocean View United Methodist Church, Music Fund, 8400 E Oak Island Dr, Oak Island, NC 28465.

Marilyn Jean (Lynn) Clark - Oak Island
Marilyn Jean (Lynn) Clark age 59 of Oak Island, NC passed away on Friday, November 28, 2014 at her residence.
She was born in Boston MA, on May 17, 1955, the daughter of the late Michael Murphy and Jean Atwood Murphy and was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Clark.
Mrs. Clark was a devoted mother and grandmother. Lynn loved both Oak Island as well as her Boston hometown and is loved and survived by many family and friends in both states. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her loving family, a daughter, Kirby Lynn Clark; two sons, Michael Clark and his lovely wife Jamie and Sean Clark; two sisters, Janice Murphy and Marcia Curtin; four grandchildren, Alison, Jenna, Dylan and Molly; in addition to numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be 11:00 AM Monday December 1, 2014 at Peacock Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service 1411 North Howe Street Southport.

Julian Bryson “Jerry” Giles - Southport
Julian Bryson “Jerry” Giles, 85, of Southport died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Mr. Giles was born November 30, 1928, son of the late Marvin and Mary Bryson Giles. He worked building boats on the Yacht Basin in Southport. He owned and captained several boats, but his favorite was “Capt. Dick” that was named after his father-in-law. Mr. Giles was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Arnold Giles and three brothers.
Survivors include one brother Marvin S. Giles of Detroit and one nephew Carroll “Buddy” Giles of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Funeral services will be 2pm Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Old Smithville Burying Grounds.
The family will receive friends one hour prior, from 1-2pm at the funeral home.

Kathleen Marie Steele - Caswell Beach
Kathleen Marie Steele, 70 of Caswell Beach, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.
Mrs. Steele was born January 14, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late John Kenneth and Antoinette Diemer. Kathy was a lifelong lover of people, pets, and a good laugh. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher. After graduating from college in 1964 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she began her teaching career in elementary education, and at her wedding in 1965, her first-grade class was in attendance. When Kathy’s first son was born in 1968, she set her teaching calling aside for her life’s most important work. She gave birth to three more children and settled in Syracuse, New York, which would be her family’s home for 25 years. In 1980 Kathy returned to teaching at Holy Cross School, her children’s school, where she taught for the next 17 years and in 1989 was awarded the St. John the Baptist De La Salle Award by the Diocese of Syracuse Catholic Schools, for outstanding teaching and “Extraordinary Commitment to the Ideals of Catholic Christian Education.” While at Holy Cross, Kathy and Scott welcomed Hoa Nguyen into the Steele family. In 1997, with her children through college, Kathy moved with her husband to Oak Island, North Carolina to begin the next chapter in her life. Over the next two decades, Kathy shared her love for life and gift of gab with her beloved island community of Caswell Dunes. It is said that Kathy has never met a stranger. She played bridge weekly, enjoyed entertaining her friends, volunteered at Southport/Oak Island Animal Rescue, substitute taught, published a children’s book titled The Legend of the Angel Wing Shell, and made a vacation paradise for her children and grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband of 49 years, K. Scott Steele; two sons John Scott Steele of Penn Yan, NY and William Kirk Steele and wife Carrie of San Antonio, TX; three daughters, Susan Elaine Leight and husband Andrew of Easton, MD, Kathleen Ann Kreutner and husband Erik of Charleston, SC, and Hoa Nguyen of Syracuse, NY; three brothers Jack Diemer and wife Shirley, Michael Diemer and wife Sharon, and Robbie Diemer; a sister Barbara Baldizar and husband Robert; and eleven grandchildren, William, Kaden, Chloe, Ansley, Tommy, Sophie, Anna Kate, Mary Clare, Owen, Adam, and Kayleigh. She also leaves behind her beloved dog Marley and joins her much-loved late daughter in law Valerie Spanneut Steele in everlasting peace.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 24, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Lower Cape Fear Hospice Chaplin Reverend Mickie Norman officiating.
Her husband and children are especially grateful for the love and support of Kathy’s friends, family, and her many dedicated caregivers during her final months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.
