Johnnie ‘Buddy’ Powell (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Johnnie “Buddy” Powell, 49, of Brooklyn, formerly of Wallace, N.C., died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in St. John Baptist Church in Wallace by the Rev. Franklin Faison. Burial will be in Dublin Memorial Gardens in Teachey, N.C. Arrangements are being handled by Matthews Funeral Home.

Among Mr. Powell’s survivors is a stepdaughter, Angela Connor of Fayetteville, N.C.

Waylon H. Parrish (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

FOUR OAKS -- Waylon Harvey Parrish, 78, of 8921 U.S. 301 South died Sunday in Veterans Affairs Hospital in Durham.

Mr. Parrish was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Four Oaks American Legion and Oliver’s Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Benson by Dr. James R. Bousman. Burial will be in the Oliver’s Grove Church cemetery.

Mr Parrish is survived by a daughter, Diane Parrish of Four Oaks; a son, Stephen W. Parrish of Coats; three sisters, Mary P. Bruce of Boaz, Ala., Florean P. Massengill of Four Oaks and Dorothy P. Parrish of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Raeford “Pete” Parrish of Four Oaks; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Hewitt E. Johnson (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

FOUR OAKS -- Hewitt Earl Johnson, 74, of 2431 Elevation Road died Sunday in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Benson by Dr. Woodrow Miller. Burial will be in Hills of Neuse Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson is survived by two sisters, Ruby R. Stephenson of Smithfield and Emogene Johnson of Lake Waccamaw.

Memorials may be made to Johnson Chapel Church, Johnson Chapel Road, Four Oaks, N.C., or to Four Oaks Rescue Squad, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Lewis S. Wicker (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

DUNN -- Lewis Stanley Wicker, 78, of Charles Parrish Nursing Home in Dunn, formerly of Erwin, died Monday.

Mr. Wicker was a former employee of Nello Teer.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. Steve Gordon and Dan Deaton. Burial will be in Westview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Wicker is survived by a son, Billy Wicker of Lillington; and a sister, Lola Adcock of Bunnlevel.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Billy Wicker.

Mrs. Wanda J. Carlyle (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Wanda J. Carlyle, 45, of 314 Edwards St. died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Gospel Tabernacle by the Rev. Dennis Arnette. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Carlyle is survived by her husband, Billy Carlyle of Lumberton; four daughters, Susan B. Hayes of Fairmont and Cindy Carlyle, Wanda D. Carlyle and Brenda J. Carlyle, all of Lumberton; her mother, Emma L. Peterson of Lumberton; three sisters, Pauline B. O’Neil of Baltimore, and Geneva Bryant and Gladys Bryant, both of Lumberton; three brothers, Dawson Bryant, Mack Bryant and Willie Bryant, all of Lumberton; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bertha C. Smith (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

LAUREL HILL -- Mrs. Bertha Campbell Smith, 70, of 15101 Fork St. died Sunday in Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith retired from Waverly Mills.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in McDougald Funeral Home by the Revs. Alexander “Sandy” Williams and J.B. Loving. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Terry A. Smith of Latta, S.C.; three daughters, Betty S. Jacobs of Laurel Hill, and Kathy Cordial and Mae Jernigan, both of Laurinburg; four brothers, Robert Campbell and Harold Campbell, both of Laurinburg, and Bernice Campbell and Wayne Campbell, both of Laurel Hill; six sisters, Betty Gordon, Carolyn Rollins, Nancy Douglas and Phyllis Sessoms, all of Laurel Hill, Delphia Honeycutt of Vass, and Jeannette Smith of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McDougald Funeral Home.

Sgt. Maj. Mikel Davis (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

Army Sgt. Maj. Mikel Davis, 44, of 7116 Evanston Drive, Fayetteville, died Thursday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Sgt. Maj. Davis was assigned to HHC, COSCOM. During his career, he earned the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merrit. Sgt. Maj. Davis was a veteran of Desert Storm, and the Grenada and Panama conflicts.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Main Post Chapel on Fort Bragg by Chaplain Sam Boone. Burial will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Sgt. Maj. Davis is survived by his wife, Brenda Davis of the home; two daughters, Christina Davis and Jennifer Davis, both of the home; and his parents, Robert and Vivian Davis of Euclio, Ohio.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at LaFayette Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Old Soldier’s Home, Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Elnora Robinson (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

Mrs. Elnora Robinson, 91, of 43476 Moonstone Court, Fayetteville, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Wiseman Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. Walter O. Whitfield. Burial will be in Cross Creek Cemetery No. 4.

Mrs. Robinson is survived by a granddaughter, Wyndell J. Bridgeford of the home; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles A. Fountain (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

Charles Albert Fountain, 39, of 3329 Scotty Hill Road, Fayetteville, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Wiseman Mortuary chapel by the Rev. John McKoy. Burial will be in the Simon Temple Church cemetery.

Mr. Fountain is survived by two sons, Dimitri Sommers and Malik A. Fountain, both of Fayetteville; his mother, Betty F. Myles of Charlotte; a sister, Cheryl Manuel of Phoenix; and four brothers, Wallace Brooks of Kaui, Hawaii, Jerome Brooks of Charlotte, Troy L. Brooks of Phoenix and Timothy Brooks of Sardjia, Italy.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Louise H. Godwin (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

BALTIMORE -- Mrs. Louise Hammonds Godwin, 59, of 2207 E. Baltimore St., formerly of Robeson County, N.C., died Thursday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Zion Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.

Mrs. Godwin is survived by five sons, B.G. Godwin Jr. of Lumberton, N.C., and Barefoot W. Godwin, Ricky L. Godwin, Sam Freeman and William Jacobs, all of Maryland; four daughters, Vickie L. Locklear of Rennert, Dickie R. Locklear of Maryland and Gladys Dial and Janice Freeman, both of Fairmont,N.C.; her mother, Roseanna Hammonds of Maryland; a sister, Susan Revels of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Jeffery Jones (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

BRONX, N.Y. -- Jeffery Jones, 30, of Bronx, N.Y., formerly of Garland, N.C., died Wednesday.

Arrangements will be announced by Summerville-Boykin Mortuary of Garland.

Miss Melinda Vann (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Miss Melinda Vann, 34, of 1710 Frankfurt St., formerly of Clinton, N.C., died Sunday in Howard University Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Summervillle-Boykin Mortuary of Garland, N.C.

Mrs. Bell B. Minter (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

LILLINGTON -- Mrs. Bell B. Minter, 86, of Shawtown Road died Monday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Payton Funeral Home of Dunn.

Mrs. Hattie H. Honsaker (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Hattie Humphrey Honsaker, 76, of 3101 Rennert Road died Sunday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Saddletree Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Charles Howell. Arrangements are being handled by Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.

Mrs. Honsaker is survived by a son, John Tilley of Lumberton; two sisters, Sarah Clewis of Lumberton and Martha Prevatte of Okechobee, Fla.; a brother, George Humphrey of Cobbtown, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Sara B. Coats (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

DUNN -- Mrs. Sara Brock Coats, 68, of 860 Roy C. Jackson Road died Monday in her home.

Mrs. Coats was a sewing machine operator with Block Industries, Bonders Inc. and M.B. Apparels.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Skinner Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Don Davis. Burial will be in Devotional Gardens.

Mrs. Coats is survived by four daughters, Margaret Jackson and Dixie Goode, both of Dunn, Barbara Watson of Banner Elk and Wanda K. Latham of Edenton; a brother, James A. Brock of Goldsboro; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Aquilla ‘A.A.’ Cummings (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

PEMBROKE -- Aquilla “A.A.” Cummings, 81, of 112 Landmark Drive died Sunday in Pemberton Place Nursing Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Calvary Holiness Church by the Revs. Kip Woods, Everett Woods, Bobby D. Locklear and Norman Caulder. Burial will be in the Maynor family cemetery.

Mr. Cummings is survived by four sons, Carlee Cummings and Johnny Cummings, both of Maxton, and Jerry Cummings and Jeffrey Cummings, both of Pembroke; three daughters, Margie Locklear of Maxton, Mary C. Carter of Pembroke and Geneva Lambert of St. Pauls; two sisters, Sally M. Oxendine and Jessie B. Oxendine, both of Pembroke; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Revels Funeral Home.
